    I have no words... I just turned my simple Ender 3 Pro into a Bambu Lab A1, I don't even have to use the printer's old school interface anymore, I can just control it from my phone! Thank you so much, this is one of the most helpful 3D printing tutorials I watched yet.

    Thank you! I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 back when I thought I was able to be clever. Needless to say it sat around unused. Following your steps I got it set up with my Ender3v2 for a much more convenient printing setup! Thanks again!

    To prevent the pi powering the printer you can put some tape over the usb power pin on the usb-a side.

    @ModBot FING app reccomended:
    Hey! You said the easiest way to see the pi ip adress was logging into the router. I used to do the same, until i started having to set up pis at my workplace where i dont have access to the router, and had to rely on the hostname.
    UNTIL: i discovered an app called "FING" that scans the network and shows devices as well as online time, hostname and so on. It even has an option to wake on lan, ping and ssh via an ssh app. The app is definitely reccomended! it's available on both IOS and Android, and is a lot easier thatn logging into router, no matter how easi that may be ;)

    The OCTOPI build on the Pi Zero 2 W took me about five minutes. It was remarkable and needed no setting up.
    BUT if you want VNC and all the other Raspberry pi GUI based interface in addition to Octoprint - go the 'install octoprint onto an existing Raspberry pi' route, not the all-in-one octopi build method. My RPI won't support the standard 'startx' GUI because octopi is a subset of the standard Raspbian.

    • @jon9947
      @jon9947 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ModBotArmy Its the same size as the Pi, and power wise its right about in the middle of the Pi3 and Pi4. I missed the super cheap train, if you read the reviews on it there was some people who picked them up for $5ish, I bought mine when they were $15. It came with 100% of everything you would need to use it, a power brick, a case, a micro sd card. It even came with a small little screen, the screen was sorta useless for Octoprint, but extra is extra.
      Probably would have made a nice SBC for a small/cheap NAS too, as it has USB 3 and gigabit ethernet. Amazon has since sold out of them, and every time they restocked them, the price went up.

    I hooked this up tonight and could only get it working if I plugged the USB OTG cable into the 2nd port. If I used the first port it just wouldn't work, so I gather that is by design. I had some right angle USB OTG cables I was hoping to use, but those are out as they would block the power one. Will have to order a left angle one to make it a bit neater, but luckily had a straight one that will work for the time being. It's nice to have a Pi devoted to each printer.

    Just bought a pi zero 2 w yesterday and was thinking of using it for this
    but I am wondering if for my needs a 1st gen pi zero W will do
    ender 3 pro and jus for simple printing , can you explain the differences ? how much slower is it?
    I have a wyze v2 I was going to use for a camera with it's original FW or RTSP FW
    so I won't be using a camera with it , I guess I could use the pi zero 2 W with the wyze cam connected to it via USB if I flash the wyze web cam FW to the camera and view it through octoprint instead of wyze app

      Totally up to you. I used the gen 1 with no cam and didnt mind it. Hell I ran them in a farm config and had no issues. I have not done a side by side speed wise but if you already have the original zero w maybe try that and see how you feel.

    Does this work in parallel with Marlin then? For some reason I thought it replaced it and was the printer's new "firmware".

    • @paulradford4100
      @paulradford4100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marlin stays as the firmware for your printer.
      Octoprint is loaded on to the raspberry pi, which is connected to the USB on the printer like an external device.
      The pi simply sends the gcode to the printer via the USB.
      Basically, Octoprint gives you WiFi control (by Web interface), which is actually very useful. It can also use a camera to allow you to watch the print without being right next to it and a bunch of other useful stuff

      @@paulradford4100 Thanks!

    • @ModBotArmy
      @ModBotArmy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup! So it is just an interface between the Octoprint and Marlin on your printer :). For Klipper it is a different scenario as it is its own firmware that runs on the Pi.

    • @ModBotArmy

      That is a great question. I cannot see why not, however I am not entirely sure if there is anything done on first boot that would sign the micro sd card to a specific pi. I dont think that would be the case. If you do please let me know the outcome.

    Pressing CTRL + X (CMD+X) in Raspberry Pi Imager will open the advanced configuration setup menu. You can set the WIFI and SSH access there before burning the image, and remove the supplicant.wpa and .ssh file edits. I made a video about it a few months back.

    • @paulradford4100
      @paulradford4100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used an old USB cable and peeled off the outer sleeve. I cut a section of the red v++ wire and used electrical tape to cover the wires.
      I felt this to be necessary, as the printer would try to power from USB (dim glow on printers screen). In my mind this is dangerous and must be looked at, as 5he USB bus is not meant to supply 24v and worst case scenario is fire.
      I have heard of folks attaching USB to the computer before powering on the printer - the result being a corrupt firmware on the printer and a fried USB bus on the computer.
      Be aware if your printer lights up by USB...

    • @ModBotArmy
      @ModBotArmy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean to prevent the Pi from trying to power the printer or to prevent the printer from trying to power the Pi? I have never ran this but if you did want to I have seen some use a thing tape strip to cover the 5V line. Or as mentioned below you can also remove the outer cover and cut the connection of the 5v line.
