- In this video I unbox the Traxxas Slash xl-5 2wd rtr slash. This is the cheapest Traxxas slash model that you can buy. It cost me $189.95 from Amain Hobbies. It technically isn’t a true rtr because it does not include the typical NIMH battery that comes with most Traxxas rtr models. But aside from not including the batteries for the car and the transmitter it is ready to race. I go over what you get for that price point as well as my future plans with this rc!

Sometimes you think it look's slow but when you get the slash in person your gonna say ''It runs like a beast super fast!!''
Yeah it’s slow in comparison to the brushless machines but you can still have a ton of fun with it!!
I honestly think the 2wd brushed is perfect for people just starting out. It was my first hobby grade purchase like 6 months ago maybe and I loved it. But then I killed the brushed motor and swapped to brushless and it’s a beast now but it has helped me learn how to work on them too as I’ve had no prior experience but now I’m looking at new suspension parts for the next step!!

just a beginner here, but I bought the Slash 4x4 RTR with battery, charger and receiver for 184.00 this Xmas. It's a decent set up, however, the steering servo malfunctioned almost out of the box. We'll get it upgraded and enjoy.

The colors pop on the slash! My bandit came w the 7 cell hump battery pack and the chessy car charger,I was thinking of swapping out the stock motor for a 540 from another 4wd buggy I had years ago
Yeah the colors do pop! You think that’ll give you more power swapping a different motor in?
@@RCKnockout I think so but I have a slightly bigger pinion gear that came w the buggy,it will reduce run time but it's all about the fun factor

Just got an ultimate edition its great also got some metal driveshafts cause that was a weak point in the truck
The Ultimate is a Great Rc! The weakest point is the stock driveshafts though

not familiar with the slash but the servo looks vunerable sticking out the bottom like that ...great video man...
Haven’t had any issues yet. I guess the round Servo horn also acts as the Servo saver which is why it looks so odd.....Thank you! 😉

the drive shafts ae plastic on 2wd i have a 2wd brushed and i had it for 7 years and still do
Yep they’re plastic. They held up for quite awhile actually

@@CT-pc3rh there’s lots of motor and esc options out there. If you wanna stick with Traxxas you’ll want to buy the vxl3s Esc and the 3500kv Velineon brushless motor

the alloy yolk or yoke, is that worth it? I see its more expensive but i cant really find any driveshafts that ship to me, so ill have to stay with traxxas driveshafts for now, but is hte alloy yoke good?
The alloy ones? The stock joints are made of steel I believe

Everyone who sees this should know about the Traxxas Power Up program discount for the VXL upgrade. Dropped that VXL in what was actually the new Unassembled Kit (same truck) this week, and with 11v 3S LiPo it screams... 30mph+ on pavement yesterday with the stock gearing, and I don't think that was quite the top. Fun truck, plenty of upgrade potential to grow into.

I bashed my Slash with the stock setup for a couple months, then took the ESC and motor to a dealer and got the VXL upgrade for a bit less than retail. Not a huge discount, but once you move up to brushless and lipo there's likely no going back to that XL5/Titan.

@@mattfoster1684 actually I’ve already run it on 2s. I did do another mod to gain some extra speed. The video on it should be out in the next week. I’d probably purchase from somewhere else online before I’d buy directly from Traxxas. Also I could use the brushed motor and esc in one of my crawlers. So it makes sense to keep it...if those electronics survive lol 😂 Thank you though! 👍😉
@@RCKnockout Nice. May not be something everyone wants to take advantage of, but it's worth knowing about. Traxxas doesn't do this directly, it has to be done with an authorized dealer, and I'm not sure if any online sellers are doing it. I bought mine from a Hobby Town franchise location in town. There's also other brushless motor and ESC options in plenty to consider. For those that do take advantage, we basically end up with a VXL model sans the stability control in the receiver that comes with the VXLs off the shelf. It actually ended up being a little more expensive to go this route over buying the VXL RTR first-time. I, however, wanted that unassembled kit... sort of a throwback to RC car modeling hobbies from my younger days (though beat to piss, I still have an old Stampede I bought 20 years ago, which is now the spare parts bucket for the Slash... chassis and tranny are way different, but a lot of other stuff is still exactly the same)

To get this as a starter car, would I need to get any rechargeable batteries or adapters to charge the RC? Or is everything to charge the car included
This one didn’t include the battery or charger…but for a bit more money you can get one with a Nimh battery and plug in trickle charger included

@@RCKnockout Yeah I’ve been into RC stuff my whole life but never raced he’s telling me that it Hass to be a 2 Wheel Drive and you have to have a certain battery for it and everything I never knew about this kind of stuff

I’m not the right person to ask…I don’t have any experience outside of the Slash in this price range
My friend got one a turned it into a drag car it’s so sick I want to get started but I’m so confused with all these conversion things and it’s so expensive to get one ready to drive or build one someone help😞

@@RCKnockout I agree I have the Losi lmt That things are fun to bash around with but I hate how it has solid axles because they break in half all the time and they’re pain in the ass to put back together when you’re fixing them but I mean overall it’s a great truck and fun to bash around it’s definitely worth the $700
@@hauntman breaking the entire solid axle sounds like a major pain to fix though……does it happen very often?
@@RCKnockout It depends on how you drive it if you do backflips then yeah once in a while it will happen I’ve had the Losi lmt foreight months and had to change the solid axle in the front three times

Yes. Probably one of the best when it comes to aftermarket support. Lots of different brands make upgrades for the Traxxas Slash 2wd

My only complaint with Traxxas is that some models don’t have the full RTR package. That’s what disappoints some of the beginners when it says RTR. Usually in RTR you would have everything that you need to start with.
That is true. This one can’t be considered a true rtr since it doesn’t have the battery or charger. It does say that on the outside of the box though

The link is for one that costs $229.95. Where did you get a $189.95 one? Also... how durable is one of these? I am NEVER going to race and compete. I'm not going to sink $600 into upgrades. Just want to play with one until it falls apart... 100% stock. Last RC I had I spent more time and money fixing it than running it. Sidebar- NEVER buy anything from Tamiya.

Doesn’t include one….you’d have to pay $30 or so more to get a model with the battery included….oddly enough you can only get this color scheme on the non-battery included model
What do u get for 189? Alot of flaws in the design crappy electronics and a bunch of broken parts! I know first hand. I bought 2 for.my kids lol buy a associated pro sc10 amd save urself the headaches
