I currently own a 2015 Turbo Cayenne and have previously owned several BMWs. I switched to the Porsche because I loved the driving dynamics. I do not off-road. Given your price point of 85k I would definitely choose the BMW. If money were no object I would buy a new Cayenne S and spec the hell out of it. Unfortunately that would get the price of the Cayenne closer the 115-120k. The base Cayenne is pretty poorly outfitted. I would want full leather seats, soft close doors, led matrix headlights, air suspension, Burmester stereo etc........Hopefully the Competition from BMW will encourage Porsche to include more options as standard. Thus far Porsche has been able to sell a lot of Cayennes. This segment is becoming huge and now hopefully more competitive.

I test drove this car and absolutely loved driving it, I thought I was completely sold on it...but...the more I looked at it from the outside I realized I was not “moved” by the design. So I waited and kept my eye out to see one driving down the road. So many times I thought I saw one but it turned out to be an X3 and when I finally did see one I had to look real close to make sure it was an X5. That being said they lost me, what I mean is the design is not striking in a way I would want from a flagship type $75K+ SUV. I feel they used a mold that would not offend ANYONE, in doing so it is somewhat “Meh". I test drove a Cayenne and a Range Rover Sport and for me the best overall feel was the X5. If you look around you see large leaps forward in design by companies like Volvo, Mazda, Mercedes, Audi and even the new Chevy Blazer. I feel like the folks at Bimmer were afraid to take a leap and settled for an update instead of a radical redesign...which I feel is needed. I ended up with a Range Rover Sport, I am 52 years with 3 kids but I wanted a little edginess in my ride and felt like the sport delivered (maybe edginess is the wrong word, perhaps I did not want to look old or too suburban. I am only giving my 2 cents in hopes that somehow BMW hears this from me...and others.. and they get a little more daring in their exterior design. So.. in 3 to 5 years I can buy an X5 and have that wow feeling when I walk into the garage.

I agree, the main body of the car looks like an average ..box, the bulbous rectangular "design". The only place where they designed the car is in the front

I am on that exact situation, X5 vs Cayenne S for my daily drive... I ended up going with the X5, I had to build one X5 50i M Sport the sticker price is 93440 and a similar Cayenne S is between 117k to 120. Now I drove both, I love Porsche it is my favorite brand, but on the SAV to me the seats on the X5 are WAY MORE CONFORTABLE than any of the Porsche seat options, inside the BMW feels wider... both of them are a great drive. I do a lot of driving sometimes long distance, so the seating on the X5 is just amazing. It will get here by month end, looking forward for that.

great to see BMW focusing X5 design on comfort now (variable dampers standard now). Great engines, rock solid ZF 8 speed(not 9 speed!) transmission. That sporty speedometer and tachometer does not seem to be connected to the classic dash layout (thanks for not putting another display for climate controls), i hope they will add some classic gauges on the facelift model or something. (In some reviews the tachometer is lagging behind the engine rpm's, laggy responsiveness on the main display, so i believe there will be some headache with those new interfaces for some years now in G05).

BMW X5 for me, great Tech, driving dynamics and seating comfort. in middle East you get 5 yrs service contract and warranty on BMW. The TCO is so much excitingly low on BMW. Plus the M50i version 2020 which I am ordering is speced up massively to deliver 535 bhp!!!

I am currently driving a 2016 Porsche Cayenne S and have enjoyed the last three years with the vehicle. However, I am strongly leaning towards the new X5 50i as opposed to the new Cayenne S as my next vehicle. A few of the factors I'm taking into consideration include cost, ergonomics/functionality/comfort, technology, ambiance and practicality. In order to get a comparable new Cayenne S to the X5 50i I'd have to spend at-least an additional $15-20k. I prefer the button layout and functionality of the equipment of the new X5. Seating comfort is better in the new BMW. REMOTE START, to my knowledge, is still unavailable on the Cayenne! I appreciate the technology BMW has put into this latest X5. The interior LED accent lighting really adds something more to the ambiance over the Cayenne interior. Finally, for practicality sake, I'm considering the smallish third row for the X5 for my family of five. Best regards, Matt

Can I haz an X6 instead? If not, I'd definitely go with an X5 x50i M-Sport Individual. Though to be honest, I'd rather wait until next when the M50i replaces the x50i, 523hp !!! I don't like the new Cayenne at all.
I'm not into Diesels, but if I was looking into one & had the means, I'd definitely import an M50d BMW.
No, I wouldn't take the X5 off road, I'm not into that.
Regarding the smart access thing, apparently new BMWs come with a back up CreditCard-like nfc key & some iPhone users put it in one of those iPhone cases with credit card cutouts in the back to achieve the same results without buying a Samsung phone.
    As always, Excellent work, M.

Someone with a family, this would be the perfect balance. Sports car, mixed with some decent off-road capacity (not that I would every take any of my cars off road), and way more luxurious than the Porsche. That’s my personal option, I’m sure if you ask a Porsche or a BMW enthusiast, they would never switch to the other brand.

  • @erikroberts3545

X5 for me. I've never driven a cayenne or any other Porsche for that matter. So, I might be a little biased. To answer your earlier question. No, I would not take my $85k x5 off-road. It may be off-road capable. But, I don't see it as an off-road vehicle. However, I did buy a 2003 Hummer H2 when they came on market in the fall of 2002. And I absolutely took that off-roading. Many people thought I was crazy. I would always reply, "This thing was built to go off-road. And that's why I bought it. To take off-road and join the Hummer club." I'm from upstate South Carolina and live 30 miles south of the BMW plant.

Between the two? Cayenne. Had 2 previous X5. E70 was si much fun to drive but interior was cheap. F15 had good interior but it was a boat. Steering was bad, suspension was bad. The G 05, they probably improved suspension but heard the steering is still very bad.
Drive train and infotainment, X5 win. Everything else, Cayenne. Overall, Cayenne is still a better car.

I drove the first X5 model for 3 years (loved the V8), followed by a Cayenne S and GTS (both with air suspension > uncontested winner on rough US roads). I'm now looking at 2019 models and typically would choose the Cayenne S (with air suspension)...but for 10K less I could get a better equipped 2019 BMW X5, with a V8 and with air suspension!! Problem: BMW does not offer the air suspension in combination with the M-Sport Design and that's a deal breaker for me.

Can you ask your contacts at BMW about the stories I’ve seen about their cars catching fire. It seems some of the older models (2006-2011) have cause a few house fires that have burned the garages and sometimes house to the ground. BMW claims it was a maintenance or modification issue, but recently I saw a video of a parked 2016 catch on fire. There are some pretty scary videos on TH-cam regarding BMW fires. Some reference cars that have not been started for days and just suddenly burst into flames. I would appreciate hearing your views on this issue.

I think BMW needs to make it a little more capable off road because every year BMW sends these cars through Africa but a Land Rover at its side. BMW needs to make it more capable especially since it’s made in South Carolina where there’s people who off road and tow a lot. The VW Toregue from last gen was a good example of Off road like but also a street car.

Base model X-5 over Cayenne. However, as the price rises, the Cayenne is differentiated (does not look like all the other Porsche models)while the BMW looks like so many other BMW's then choose the Porsche. Also, BMW are lease cars (70%) and pile up on used ca lots that drive the price down-so good if you are buying 3 year old low mileage auto but not so good if you are selling your BMW! The Porsche will hold value longer.

    • @marshallwilliams6405
      @marshallwilliams6405 6 ปีที่แล้ว

They can reduce the emissions, but the tech stresses the engine and needs to be replaced ever 5000 miles or so. Basically a maintenance nightmare. Europe should really crackdown on diesel engines so that these car manufacturers start giving us real clean diesels instead of causing insane pollution everywhere.

I like diesel, especially TDI Q7. But when we talk about bmw, i do not think diesel is a good idea. People buy BMW is because of its performance and fast responding. Diesel lack the power at high RPM which reduces the fun when you push the gas down to floor. I would not buy a diesel BMW, but diesel other brands are quite welcomed. I almost bought a diesel Grand Cherokee, the $7000 premium on diesel engine stopped me, hahahaha.

Strange, there‘s the difference between the US attitude to cars and that of us Europeans. You say that this car will be driven by mums picking kids up from school etc, and „Dudes“ probably less. This car, especially with the spec you‘re demonstrating, is driven by successful businessmen and businesswomen here. Yes, also Dads with families but very few Mums as her daily for the kids etc. The camera by the way, when you‘re off-road, is only there to see whether you‘ve got enough room at the front when maneuvering in tight situations and not to constantly stare at. The X50D is the M Version and those turbos take the performance up to Stupid Level! As a BMW driver of over 12 years, 7 cars in all, I can honestly say and without any bias, they have become better than Audi or Mercedes. It is an industry confirmed fact that the iDrive is the best of any Infotainment controllers, they have pepped up their interiors to look as interesting as Audi. But above all, it is the absolute symbiosis of all that electronic stuff working in harmony that is a cut above the rest. Good review Mr Motoman. 👍👍👍
Ps. Just an afterthought. That Cayenne from Porsche is, without doubt, a beautifully designed and engineered vehicle. It also costs a whole lot more than the comparatively equipped X5!

The kidney shaped grill up front is a bit oversized in my opinion...mimicking the upcoming X7? Just a matter of taste

The X5 is not a”baby buggy”. This vehicle is too aggressive for most women.

For $85k, I wouldn't get either an X5 or a Cayenne. I'd just get a new Land Cruiser. I have a 2013 Land Cruiser and I take it on far more severe off-roading than that little dirt track you took the X5 on.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA 85k for a tractor with less equipment and performance than a VW polo, spectacular choice, lol

The pop up screen looks so out of place. Badly designed. Seems like an after thought.

I have a huge BMW issue. No Android auto which is dumb as hell, yet they had to go to Android as a key. At what point do u cut the crap and offer both Carplay and Android auto like most sensible car manufacturers?😑
