Surprised no mention of the laser headlights in a Tech Review?! Also, RE: Fuel Economy - likely not a deal breaker as you say, but I DO think consumers are interested in range. If I can get 500 miles per tank - that is a big win as I am not stopping as often. Acura MDX hybrid - easily gets 525 - 550 miles per tank. Therefore I am looking forward to learning more about the new X5 plug in hybrid.
Here's a funny coincidence, we're eyeing a late first gen X5 Sport, its the exact same color you showed, but have the 19"s wheels instead. Moving on, they did an excellent job with the X5 this time around, both inside & out. It redeems the monstrosity that is the previous gen. I'm very excited about the next X6, I was worried at first, but they nailed the X5. Outside of Europe, I don't think fuel consumption is much of a concern in this tax bracket. As always, Excellent work, M.
The X5 and it’s X3 little brother are both great looking vehicles this generations. Very muscular and upright without looking “bush”. As for the fuel economy, I think you are right, the family getting this suv would care very little ab fuel economy. It’s $70,000 to start and has a cristal Ball shifter for crying out loud.
I’m looking at buying a used X5 35d in the somewhat near future and fuel economy is definitely an important factor. However, people who buy these $70k trucks new and don’t care about it losing half of its value in 3-4 years definitely do not care about epa numbers
itbeokay that’s a good choice buying used and it’s an big luxury SUV so the epa numbers are going to take a hit but driving dynamics , practicality and accessibility are important factors
For thise who buy high end luxury SUV/CUV like the X5, fuel consumption is that much a consideration. But for average buyers who want to haveva feel of a good ride we turn to consider fuel as part of budget consideration. Very clean design and top notch if you ask me. I would love to have one. Waiting for the final review with the driving impressions
I am looking at buying the base model X5 when it is release! Local dealers are not to keen on writing these orders, however. I will probably have to buy it a MSRP but still they may refuse it! I feel it the best value since I DIY maintenance and repair after the warranty expires.
Gas mileage doesn't really matter when you're spending 80k. However it would be nice to know when BMW will make their diesel an option and what the mpg will be.
Why do people say fuel economy in expensive cars doesn't matter???? OF COURSE IT MATTERS!!! It's the *price of gas* that doesn't matter!!! Long range and long intervals between fillups is a convenience. This is related to fuel economy. People with money to spend want to buy convenience to go with luxury. GET IT???
Not sure what you're getting at James, or what exactly you object to. Larger fuel tanks equal longer range. Brilliant. Yet people who buy trucks with 40 gallon tanks for towing are STILL interested in fuel economy.
Yes, it's very evident you didn't understand. But no, it's obvious that people who buy SUVs instead of wagons don't care about fuel economy, despite your assertions to the contrary. If they did, they'd buy more fuel-efficient wagons that have the same lugging capacity but better economy. I agree with you that range is important so that you're not always stopping for gas, but you said it was a function of fuel economy even though they don't obviously aren't concerned, and I was suggesting that larger fuel tanks achieved the same thing for those customers. Where in there did you perceive an "objection"? I hope that's a bit clearer for you.
Is this not an objection: "George still no" ? Yeah. We may have to disagree on this. In a face to face conversation, we'd probably have an understanding but I just don't have the will to write with enough nuance about something I really don't care about. But I'll make one final attempt to make my point since you're so interested. Fuel economy is but one of many factors that matters in a vehicle. Maybe a little. Maybe a lot. Maybe in between. Maybe for convenience. Maybe for affordability. Maybe for this that or the other. We would be hard pressed to find anyone shopping for a vehicle who didn't look at economy. To say someone doesn't care about fuel economy just because they have money is, at best, a misstatement. People with money don't care about the COST OF FUEL or the cost of filling a large tank but could still care about economy for other reasons. The SUV buyer makes my point; thank you. Buying an SUV doesn't mean you don't care about economy. What's obvious is they bought it *in spite of* the economy. Prioritizing fuel economy below other factors in the decision matrix doesn't mean you don't care about it; it simply means it's prioritized lower. If you buy an expensive house, is it then "obvious" you don't care about the higher taxes and insurance rates? I don't think so. What's obvious is that you'd rather have a larger house... *in spite of* more taxes and insurance. We all care about the difference between $5,000 and $10,000, for example, but maybe we care more about a bigger house. Does any of that make sense?
Nah, you're really not getting it. You said "Long range and long intervals between fillups is a convenience. This is related to fuel economy." Here, you're drawing a causal link between the two, and I'm suggesting that the size of the fuel tank is at least as important a factor in providing customers the range they're looking for as fuel economy might be.
Ha! If fuel economy is not relevant to the sort of people buying X5's, then neither is towing, cargo capacity, off-roading, or price. If you're going that route, you might as well point out all the badges on the thing for ten minutes and how easy it is to get a car seat in it.
For all these x5s on the road everywhere only sold 1.8m to date? So you are telling me majority of x5s are sold in CA....it’s a weird thing ....leave OC you notice there aren’t many luxury cars on the roads
I worked at BMW, that 4.4 V8 is notorious for needing engine swaps even under 10,000 miles... The reason they keep using it? I will never understand...
You're probably right. I have an '07 with the V8 and the mechanics say the engine bay is so crammed, it's expensive to work on. BMW also seems to have trouble keeping the oil from staying inside the engine in their V8s.
This is obviously a heavy vehicle but again, whoever is buying it isn't going to care about fuel economy figures. If you can pay for it, you can pay for the gas, as well as the helicopter in your backyard, the yacht etc..😊
My 7 year old X5 is absolute garbage. Problems: HVAC - blowing hot on 1 side and cold on the other, blower motor replacement (twice), numerous problems with keyless entry that now has a class action case against BMW on, oil/fluid leaks from the rear diff, power steering, oil filter housing and oil pan. BMW quality is horrendous. I've owned 'em for the last 20 years, but after seeing the abysmal quality of this, I'll never own another.
looks like i will be switching to Audi or mercedes really soon. The only hope BMW has to get my money is the new 3 series and if that looks anyway similar to these I am done. So disappointed in the new x5.....the interior looks so bland and dull. no excitement. Looks like you are in a sterile room. Hopefully the M version will give it some grace. If it wasn't for the BMW badges you can easily mistake this for a toyota highlander.....those lights are horrid. i must admit that mercedes and audi are really killing it right now
Brandan honda yea they have always been that for years now BMW is known for driving dynamics aka the 3 series . Meanwhile, Mercedes is high volume luxury with a dash of performance aka the S Class
Ya I mean coming from a owner of the current generation X5, I do believe that its very plain and uncreative with the design. Hopefully theyre saving the real interior update for the X7.

Great review as always. Looking forward to you unveiling the x5m/x6m whenever they get unveiled. Your the best motoman.
Wow it’s cool to see the E53 brand new

Butch?
Jonathan Williamson actually I’m not sure what I meant there... I just like the car ok?
Motomans comments sections are probably the best on TH-cam
Have the interior dimensions become a bit more roomy and comfortable? I love your reviews so I figured I’d ask.

If you‘re genuinely interested in fuel economy, why not consider the lighter car on which this is based, namely the 5 Series?
James Bray I totally agree cars tend to have better fuel economy than SUVs due to many factors
Was not expecting a Ben Graham shout out. Chapters 8 and 20 should be read on annual basis!

As always, great job! Would appreciate if you could provide us with metric numbers too, maybe a subtitle? Thx.

I'm curious about fuel economy, living in Australia fuel is a ripoff.
Gas mileage doesn't really matter when you're spending 80k. However it would be nice to know when BMW will make their diesel an option and what the mpg will be.
Just here firstly for the shoes. Mmmmhhh great review
Hello! Is the color from the new X5 tansanit blue or is this another color? Thanks for the information.
I think mpg is not important to some but still important to discuss
Why do people say fuel economy in expensive cars doesn't matter???? OF COURSE IT MATTERS!!! It's the *price of gas* that doesn't matter!!!

George still no: that problem can be solved just as easily by a larger fuel tank

You r right. Fuel economy is not a major consideration for me.
Great review
Rear control arms are made of iron? Not cast aluminium
I was actually waiting for fuel economy numbers. I want a luxury SUV as a daily but commute 60miles a day. Those numbers matter to me.
Ha! If fuel economy is not relevant to the sort of people buying X5's, then neither is towing, cargo capacity, off-roading, or price. If you're going that route, you might as well point out all the badges on the thing for ten minutes and how easy it is to get a car seat in it.
What colour is this ??
Fuel Economy is always a consideration but in some cases I ignore it...always cover IMO
That front grille looks like the car has chrome buck teeth!
What color is this
Yes, “real world” city fuel consumption is important.
For all these x5s on the road everywhere only sold 1.8m to date? So you are telling me majority of x5s are sold in CA....it’s a weird thing ....leave OC you notice there aren’t many luxury cars on the roads
You're right. No one buying this vehicle cares about fuel economy. We assume it's somewhere between 15 and 25 MPG. Good enough.
I worked at BMW, that 4.4 V8 is notorious for needing engine swaps even under 10,000 miles... The reason they keep using it? I will never understand...
Cause the warranties are short and the insurance companys pay the engines. Win win :P And there will always be new customers ;)
I was also told its a way to keep jobs for the mechanics too if they made engines that last that equates to no jobs
You're probably right. I have an '07 with the V8 and the mechanics say the engine bay is so crammed, it's expensive to work on. BMW also seems to have trouble keeping the oil from staying inside the engine in their V8s.
Prius prime review?
So nice
Where is the x7 been hearing about that for a year now , still a no show
So the answer is . . . fuel economy will have no bearing on whether or not I’m going to buy this car. And I am. I think.
Fuel economy is a bit off the list.. but if you have to visit the gas station every 4th day, that can become annoying!!!!
Other than the questionable looks, bm knocked it out of the park with this one
Only because you say they redid the engine for efficiency
I see single guys now are driving X5s now; so it not a totally family or soccer mom’s vehicle now! It is an utility vehicle.
It says x4 in the title.
motorman is canadian? pronouncing the letter z as zed
No, he just knows how it's supposed to be pronounced hah
my car
Mm’s not ml’s...
I prefer gen x5 2018 more than 2019🤔
What? First? Is it possible. I love this channel
This is obviously a heavy vehicle but again, whoever is buying it isn't going to care about fuel economy figures. If you can pay for it, you can pay for the gas, as well as the helicopter in your backyard, the yacht etc..😊
@Dithh Believe me, I know. Just being funny.
My 7 year old X5 is absolute garbage. Is it just me of the interior looks cramped
looks like i will be switching to Audi or mercedes really soon. The only hope BMW has to get my money is the new 3 series and if that looks anyway similar to these I am done. I truly hate the rear tail lights
Ugly grill, slaby rear, Americans will love it
At that price at least use led interior lights.
i buy only bmw
Wrong about fuel economy. Which is why people who care and have money buy Teslas.
as if teslas aren t expensive af
Interior looks kind of plain.
Brandan honda yea Mercedes is most known for interior quality in this segment
@@siseesan3147 totally agree
Brandan honda yea they have always been that for years now BMW is known for driving dynamics aka the 3 series . Meanwhile, Mercedes is high volume luxury with a dash of performance aka the S Class
Ya I mean coming from a owner of the current generation X5, I do believe that its very plain and uncreative with the design. Hopefully theyre saving the real interior update for the X7.
Sise Esan As a Mercedes owner, I disagree with you about interior quality. I would say thats just interior design, the quality is terrible
Kidney grill is looking ugly in new one
So no 1 gonna talk about how uglier the x5 is no? Smh
