I have enormous respect for Clarkson, Wilman, Hammond and May for what they achieved with Top Gear and I was devastated when the BBC canned it (although Clarkson’s behaviour was inexcusable). However, seeing him together with Harry, I had the impression that for Clarkson it is more about himself than about the cars. Mr. Metcalf, on the other hand, appears to have a much smaller ego and a more genuine interest in the car itself and the audience he’s doing it for.

As an L322 driver, 2012 model, you must set aside £2k a year to cover maintenance, both scheduled and preventative. Although in 5 months he had to pay half of the purchase price in repairs and maintenance, he absolutely loved the vehicle for those 5 months. Three weeks ago, he died suddenly of a cardiac arrest 11 days before his 60th birthday. I had this video as a tab opened on my laptop all this while because I wanted him to watch this video with me, but he never had the time. His L322 is with me now. I can see why he loved the car. It made him feel really good after driving a 2014 Lincoln MKX for a decade before I forced him to upgrade to an RR. Like Clarkson, he never bought anything new until the previous one died on him. I just loved how Jeremy kept meandering the conversation to talk about fertiliser, tractors and who's who on the farm. Having grown up on a farm and driving a farm Defender (before they were called Defenders) and now owning a Discovery 5, this video was totally relatable. I'd prefer the new Defender too for exactly the reasons that Jeremy mentioned and whilst I feel that the Discovery should revert to a proper split tailgate, I am finding the fold down inner 'gate' very, very useful for the reasons that Harrry said. It surprised me how damned useful it is.

Hi Harry. Like yourself, I have owned many £100k + motor vehicles. Also, like yourself, I always come back to my trusty L322. It now has over 170,000 miles and additional to standard service costs (I have a full service history for this mileage) it has cost me a Turbo pipe (similar to yourself) and a rear wheel bearing. Basically, less than £500 additional to servicing and tyres etc. the most amazing thing, is I still get 38.8 to the gallon on a run and 31.5 town and motorway. the car is prestine and I can guarantee that at least once a week, someone stops me to inquire about something. there are not many cars being built today that would be able to boast this type of pedigree. A marvellous versatile reliable prestigeous vehicle.
