I had a ‘54 plate ex-police Range Rover with the 4.4 V8, absolute beast, everything worked. Most comfortable car I’ve ever owned and it moved when you pushed the throttle for a 2.4 tonne car 👌🏼 10/10 would have another
The BMW is great, we had one of those, but a 3.0d, the issue with the gearbox is mostly related to the GCM, gearbox control module (at least it was the case with our car). The fix was to get another GCM off of ebay for 300 euros and get it replaced. The car had more then 400.000 km on it and it drove beautifully, other then them GCM and foggy headlights it had no problems.
When I saw it was a Cayenne S, the first thing I wondered was if there´s an issue with cooling? I wasn´t wrong As an ex 955 Cayenne owner, here´s my tip: *Buy a Turbo or Turbo S only* 1. Turbocharged Cayennes have better cooling 2. Engine blocks are made from far more heat-proof materials 3. Huge step up in performance, and just small impact on fuel consumption. 4. You get much more equipment, including different gauges with full LCD screen 5. More aggressive front and quad pipes Do I recommend this car? Not, until fuel prices fall down. Fuel consumption can be abysmal in town driving. With my calm driving, it consumed 16,8l/100 km in urban driving. It´s quite efficient on motorway though, 10,6-11l/100 km when driving 120 km/h. And let´s not forget that we talk about a SUV which weighs almost 3000 kg! The main trick for better fuel economy is to not engage turbochargers when not necessary. Was it reliable? 1. It had issue with one of brake hoses. There was a very small hole in it, which caused Brake Booster Faulty error message. 2. Drunk parking sensors. A second control unit fixed the problem 3. Self triggering alarm. The problem was caused by bad wire in driver´s door 4. One of shock absorbers (air suspension) jammed up, and needed replacement Overall, it was very reliable. It always took me from A to B in comfort, without any problems. Things to know: 1. It drinks oil like hell. But don´t be scared, it´s normal 2. Never lift the car without switching off the air suspension. You will end up with a nightmare 3. Boot capacity is unfortunately just average, and so is the space in the back. Not the most practical SUV...
@@NubletPie278 Porsche solved the cooling issues in 4.8 V8. Engines were made from better materials, and plastic cooling lines were replaced with aluminium. Plastic lines were also an issue in 955 Cayenne (also Turbo) and could also lead to engine overheating. Majority of 955s had plastic lines replaced with aluminium by mechanics. You can go for every version of 957 Cayenne with 4.8 V8. They are better than 4.5 V8. You just need for watch out for PVC Valve which is connected to emission system. If it fails, you will notice increased oil consumption, exhaust smoke and the engine will not work properly. 957 is also the first Porsche to have a diesel engine (3.0 TDI). It's a economic engine with decent performance. But it often comes with a cost of worse equipment than the petrol ones. No air suspension and some more tacky interior trim. Also 3.0 TDI suffered from issues with timing chain, which could stretch. It also have DPF, which means that you have to punch it at least two times in month. Otherwise you will jam it and lose performance. It can be solved with a diagnostics (forced regen). The worst scenario here is a replacement of DPF, which is very pricey
@@ARIES6181 Awesome thanks for the info. Wouldn't really consider the diesel, it's the same tax in the UK as the petrols, has said extra issues, is significantly slower, sounds worse, diesel is now approx 10-20% more expensive and it won't be ULEZ compliant, way too many reasons to avoid for the one benefit of slightly better fuel economy than the 3.6. Red GTS manual is the dream!
Does the same heating and gearbox issue apply to the 955 3.2 V6 as well? I'm really liking this car and am planning to buy it next. As the 3.2 seems the most practical to me. Any pointers appreciated thanks!
Cars like this you buy as a "disposable" car. Buy one and get a full Valet to get rid of whiffs. You get an "independent" to do "services" (ie Lube and Filter change at A.N.Other car clinic), you fix anything safety-related that goes wrong and ignore anything non-safety related that fails and run it until it either stops moving or fails it's MOT. Then you scrap it and buy another. £1800. If you run that for a year then it's £150 a month. Get 2 years and it's £75. Compare that to anything NEW you can finance. Maybe you get a few hundred back at the scrappie when you're done.
12:07 those are the little pellets that seal an inc cartridge for a pen. If the cartridge is empty you can cut it open and remove the little ball. I actually collect them in the back of one of my pens because there’s extra space in it that the cartridge doesn’t use
The build that Ed from VinWiki has done with the Porsche Cayennes he has bought is pretty badass. He has lifted them, added bumpers, lights, and bigger wheels and tires
The Cayenme is hands down the best choice here, better on road than the BMW, comparable offroad to the range Rover, and far more reliable than either. Too bad it's such an eyesore. The 958.2 Cayenne fixes that and is possibly the most complete vehicle ever built. I am not generally a fan of SUVs, but I make an exception for that.

I have a 2005 range rover sport but it's a very rare one as it usally is powered by a 4.2 supercharged but my one has the same 4.4 N/A as your one, there is only 326 ever built of mine. @@janjander152 I'm not very sure, as I am not the first owner. I bought it at 3,000 miles. This is how I felt buying my E70 X5 Diesel. Once I fixed the issues and did a deep clean it became a great vehicle for a fraction of the price of a new Toyota.
Agree there. I bought a VW for £500 under the asking price as the abs and traction control lights came on on my test drive. Said to the seller it's likely the abs pump going wrong which is £200 as pointed by the fault code mentioning abs module. Luckily and touch wood at the moment I replaced the front right wheel sensor and the lights seem to not pop up now so fixed that for just £30

So I scored a German Police wagon instead 😁 Battery was dead, 20yr old spark plugs in the block, Swiss Cheese intake boot, and an array of drug-related items were located inside. Cleaned the seats, dash, doors, and everything I would ever have to touch. Replaced a handful of things (plugs, suppressor boots, intake boot, fuel filter, tires), and it's running "Like New" again. Cheap cars can be fun projects, or absolute nightmares... I'd rather mess around with a BMW, than get in a pickle with a Porsche, or have Range Rover rake me for replacement parts. 16:50 - Mat, a BMW owner, knows about the good old "backseat slide." You made me proud 🙌

Having owned a mk 1 Cayenne S and X5, my advice is to always check the service history and bills. If they don't have any, run a mile. Many people buy these cars for the kudos but cannot afford to run them properly. I spent over 2k within the first month of ownership of the BMW. The Cayenne's fuel injectors on mine failed soon after purchase, £1,500. Around 5 months later, part of the transmission was gone, another £1,500. Lovely cars when they run, but as said, a lot of owners at the price simply cannot afford to run the cars or choose not to and sell them when they know a big bill's coming. On the plus side, once I sorted the major issues on both (including the radiator that went on the X5, another £1,000), both cars ran fairly well, but I maintained the cars with regular services and carried out repairs as soon as they were needed.
Beware if you're buying a pre-2003 X5 with a 5 speed GM automatic. The gearbox WILL fail. And you'll be out another 2k for a gearbox, torque converter and fitting
Absolutely great video. I’ve been wanting to own a RR L322 since 2003 but back then couldn’t afford to buy one…. Nowadays I couldn’t afford to maintain one! As soon as I laid eyes on the Porsche I said, “Drug dealer’s car”. Lo and behold I was proven right. 😎
A great video. And it makes arefreshing change from the usual over-price, underwhelming new stuff. Many thanks. PS: Would you do a video of cheap 'luxury' for for £5k or £10K please?
The porsche is a very good car. Gearbox just needs a gearbox service. I owed a cayenne for 15 years and made sure every 20k miles it had a vital automatic gearbox service. Never had any issues. Porsche needs TLC but it return you will get it back!

So it became the Range..I could fit 12 Moving Boxes.. with intention to sell it again right after the move. Well, I fell in Love, kept him ever since. What a great car for the money. Will keep it until it falls apart.
As someone who has lived with a first generation BMW X5 since 2006 I must say I was very surprised by how many small parts the Range rover had in common with it.
The X5 to me still looks the most timeless than the other cars, and it still looks good today
@@TonyKimtheamusementparkfan I completely agree. I really love the first gen X5.
That model Range Rover was developed in Munich and the UK, exterior design too. In many ways it is a BMW.
@@kriskalpa6346 Like the new Supra?
@@flyingby3703 yes! And at one point, the RR had the same BMW 4.4 engine.
This content is ace. Taylor and Mat are hilarious together
Reliability has left the chat.
Was just thinking that - a 2 grand 4x4 of that kind of ilk will probably cost you 3 grand a year in keeping it on the road... unless you are lucky or just going to drive it into the ground.
But you get seated heats
@@gamingpersonality4306 thank god I'm not the only one who clocked that
@@gamingpersonality4306 seated heats lol
‘When you put it in reverse the main beams come on’ 😂😂😂
I'm looking at an old x5 3.0d I want something I can drive to work in slight luxury and beat on the weekends with some light offroading
And the m57 is 👌
Taylor has been popping up all over the place recently, and it's clear to see why. What a lad! 👌
What's his channel name?
@@abdullahqamar7934 He doesn't have one, but often appears on AutoAlex's channel
@@TehMisteh557 😘thanks
Bro, the used cars in the UK is just amazing. Here in Portugal, for 2000€ I get a thing like a Peugeot 307 from 2004, and a MK1 Cayenne would never cost less than 10.000€
That kind of cayenne in such condition would have cost at least 15k in where I live, that's pretty much why everyone drives a toyota lol.
My folks live in Ibiza paid 3k Euro for a 20year old Citroen c1. Find a way to import vehicles!
Thank you carwow for not being a typical new car group. Getting some great UK content creators to help with good content for us to enjoy! Great video and hope more too come

Love this kind of content. Matt and Taylor make a great double act.
I'm not really into SUV/4x4 and was about to skip it until I saw Taylor was on! Nice to see him getting about, he gets on well with people.
Luckily and touch wood at the moment I replaced the front right wheel sensor and the lights seem to not pop up now so fixed that for just £30
lol, it's literally the worse luxury suv from 00s. Cayenne, infiniti FX, HSV avalanche, caddy srx, ML, allroad, touareg, XC90, discovery, chrysler pacifica are all better
@@olofdaisler9121 haha okay buddy. I got it because of the diesel. I had the Toureg TDI in mind as well, but those were the only two diesel mid-size suvs I liked for the price I was going for. The Q7 was a good option too, but it was a bit too expensive.
@@ghost21501 I hope your car will last long. At least they were well built. It's just not as spacious and capable as the rivals, but maybe that could not be important for you.
There's no seated heats 🤣. Made my day that.
"What are the cameras for?" - and the rest of the video I missed because I was laughing too hard.

I spent $2000/£1650 on a BMW 325Xi AWD Manual Touring Wagon this month. Best investment ever. Was considering the X3 or X5, but I didn't want a taller SUV-type thing... So I scored a German Police wagon instead 😁
Battery was dead, 20yr old spark plugs in the block, Swiss Cheese intake boot, and an array of drug-related items were located inside.
I loved it, please do "reviews" like this more!! 🙂
Love Taylor's Humour 🤣🤣
Looking forward to "the things" Mat has in store for these SUVs!
Gonna watch it later, but i will not bei disappointed for sure.
This is a video I ve been waiting for, beside all the new expansive cars.
Watch you Mat Watson for almost a decade, you re still my favorite car reviewer!
Thanks for all the work you ande your teams!
And I come also for the good british humor.
Greetings from Germany 🚙⛽
We need more of Mat and Taylor what a duo
Anyone else watching this thinking “hmm yeah I’d have all of those…”?
You would just want the Range Rover , Surley 😅
😂😂😂
"Rust is lighter than carbon fibre" 🤣🤣🤣 Made my day!
"But I am an honest salesman" Taylor 😭😭😂
Good job Matt. Always promoting boys who love and live off cars on your show. You are a true hero.
Taylor Made my hero of the year. I would definetly buy a car from him!
I’d buy a car from Taylor. Love his honesty. What do you expect from a £2k car. Great video
Taylor and Mat together are amazing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👌👌
Bmw x5 with the M57 diesel and the 6 speed manual option would be the best bet of the lot
agree, great suv
Ive got an 08 cayenne, 73k miles immaculate in and out, like new still, i love it
Taylor seems like a good dude, really like his vibe.
Taylor so well behaved when Alex is not around 🤣
That was awesome, love these types of vids 👍 can’t wait to see what you have planned for the 3 of them, good one Mat , cheers 🍻
X5 is the most reliable between the 3 , the cayenne has alot of problems with the diff
Can confirm, my '01 X5 3.0i was a joy to own drivetrain wise because M54 is solid af. Can't say the same about the electronics though, lol.
Love these kind of videos, looking forward to seeing what you do with them Matt!
@ 2:55 "out of the three this (the Range Rover) has the highest quantity of issues"
I am shocked, absolutely shocked!! 🤣
The Cayenne has aged the best!
Just about every other modern suv has this profile from Aston Martin dbx to Kia.

The X5 has aged soooo well!
Just looks great

Third gen yes, first one looks like a blob
The Facelifted version with style 87s or 168 or just a 4.8is in general is such a beautiful SUV. The bad ones overshadow the well optioned out ones.
@@aidenp5768 still looks like a blob. Range rover looks timeless. But I think Infinity FX35 looks the best of the bunch
A great video. And it makes arefreshing change from the usual over-price, underwhelming new stuff. Many thanks. PS: Would you do a video of cheap 'luxury' for for £5k or £10K please?
I think E53 3.0d 160kw best choice
Idk why but I really like this guest. Actually the best duo
Please can you do more of these old car videos carwow. Thanks.
0:12 - they had us in the first half, not gonna lie
The final scene is where Tavarish bought the E36 M3 with Alex 😳 one big car world on TH-cam 😁
...the chemistry between these two is amazing.
Drive them without oil and coolant, and drill through the BMW sump
it's such a pity that land rovers are unreliable.... they genuinely are some of the coolest looking cars
Beamer still looks great today.
Love the videos carwow is only for car lover's and I'm a car lover ♥️
I agree with you
The porsche is a very good car. Gearbox just needs a gearbox service. I owed a cayenne for 15 years and made sure every 20k miles it had a vital automatic gearbox service. Never had any issues. Porsche needs TLC but it return you will get it back!
I have a 2nd gen, a 2012 Cayenne S with the 4.8L. Way too much fun for an SUV 😂
If you only have two grand none of these are a good option. Any issues and you will need at least another 2k.
Now this is some interesting content! Rather watch these than videos about brand new vehicles
The laugh of Mat is absolutely incredible fun to listen to
'rust is lighter than carbon fiber' great episode this was.

Porche most £2500 with a £650 road tax . Land rover again finding at £3000. Tax £330. bmw £2500 and £330 tax all poor for fuel so expensive 😫
That range rover is a perfect off road course basher. Loved watching Taylor and Alex buying these things on Alex's channel. Nice to see Taylor getting some time on other channels as well.
