Have you ever wondered how three of the most popular family SUVs can perform off-road? Well, we have, so we made this video! We’ve got the BMW X3 going up against the Audi Q5 & Volvo XC60 across a series of six challenges to see which is the ultimate family car off-roader.
So how do they compare on paper? Well starting with the X3, it’s the ‘30e’ edition, so it’s powered by a 2-litre petrol engine coupled with an electric motor to deliver 292hp and 420Nm of torque. It weighs about 1,990kg and costs approximately £49,000.
Next up is the Audi Q5, which has a 2-litre turbo petrol engine under the bonnet to produce 265hp and 370Nm. It weighs less than the BMW, coming in at 1,880kg, and it’s cheaper too, costing around £43,000.
And finally we have the Volvo XC60. With a 2-litre turbo diesel up front, the XC60 puts down 197hp and 420Nm of torque. It’s weight and price is pretty similar to the Audi, at 1,900kg & £43,000 respectively.

These off-road tests are always botched, man. Test cars one at a time, same driver, same lines, same tires etc to see which car actually has the advantage. Otherwise it’s just too subjective to be taken seriously.

Even if you used the same driver, you can't guarantee that they'll drive in exactly the same way every time. We've all seen drag races where professionals mess up all the time. There's no race that's 100% fair but I guess minimising the bias is important

Even with the same driver, it's a high margin of variance. We don't always do things exactly the same way.
And they're likely using everything stock on these cars, which makes sense not to be changing out tires.
The Volvo was set up to fail here. They could have used a higher spec car that would have 250bhp and hill descent control fitted, and still been in the same price range of the other two 🤔
the volvo must be in that comparison T8 petrol-hybrid version 408hp ,bet for some reason Car Wow take weakest volvo not even mild hybrid.Actualy T8 most powerful hybrid -no one has that amount off power from 2.0

Matt should've done some grocery store race, running over curb test, reaction time of using indicator during turns, pedestrian honking sound test and more.
That will be more interesting cause that's how these SUVs will actually be used in the real world.

The 100 hp more potent X3 is quicker than the XC60, what a surprise..
They couldn't get the T6-R model it would of been substantial price gap approx 60k ish depending on country
X3 is so dogshit. Imagine having to do a 3 point turn on that corner while the other 2 cars didn't even have to think about it. Also 0 traction and those approach and descent angles are the biggest load of bullshit.

@@-_neo_- you still need power. They should have compared the more powerful version as when they always wanna push some brand, they use less powerful version of competitors.
@@-_neo_- Torque only doesn't move you either. Power is Torque * RPM. So a bigger Diesel definetly would have changed some. So the more often you apply the torque / the motor turns the crankshaft, the more power you get. That's why power increases with rpm and torque at some point decreases.

Glad to see the XC60 did well considering it is (correct me if I am wrong) the oldest design. Would be interesting to see these up again the Land Rover Discovery Sport which (I believe) also has the Haldex diff.

I think the hill descent challenge was a bit unfair, the Volvo got down at a speed that was safe and didn't damage the car, but the Audi and BMW were set to the lowest speed possible which wasn't needed on that hill
The main idea is to check the grip of the car.

@@RioPutra_ Thats not how hill descent control works. The entire idea of hill descent is how well can the car control its descent........the faster it goes down the worse it is. You lot had asbolutely no idea why the test was performed.

The video is awesome! That BMW has great suspension! The Volvo is lower to the ground so it has less suspension. My dad has a Land Rover Discovery 02. We only drive it if we think are other cars are going to get stuck, or we want to off road, because it guzzles gas. For are next car it’s going to be a Grey Tesla Model X Plaid with 7 seats. You make very good high quality videos. Thank goodness you made these! Other wise I don’t know what I would do!

Not sure why a diesel Volvo was compared to a turbo hybrid BMW when Volvo makes a turbo hybrid model of the same car. Surely it would have better hill ascent, descent and overall speed if it was the same. The Volvo hybrid drivetrain is the most powerful of these models.

lets be honest, 8:45 is the part that actually matters. this is where we see how the AWD systems behave when they lose traction and when they have wheels in the air. and for me, the X3 behaved the best. it had almost zero wheelspin. Q5 was a bit worst, with more wheelspin, and XC60 had the most wheelspin.

Great to have Drag race like this. The Quattro system is already legendary and for a long time we all know that. But it's not fair to put a low spec XC60 in while the others are obviously in better spec.
both the audi and volvo were lower spec ones. especially the volvo. The comparison was not exactly the fairest among them.

Not very fair really, Volvo started with a disadvantage with that diesel engine. Should have got the B5 or T5 model with more power, would have been a fairer comparison.

To be fair in the off-road world power is almost irrelevant, your average tractor is only about 100hp and could out pull 10 of these cars at a time! It's tyres, driver , weight distribution and power in that order in my view, being a diesel might even be an advantage in some ways!

What's the point of racing a 292hp vs a 197hp!? We already knew which one was gonna win before the race began.
Because a car person would know HP is not the only factor in a cars overall performance...

Ya because it hade the bas model D4 insted of the D5 that comes with 225 insted of 197hp and only kost slitly more for a better car and anny one buying a XC60 is going to opt for the D5
