If it happened these days, Nixon could have gotten away with it just by saying he denies it and he does recall. Nixon would be all set since times have changed since him.
Seriously, does he also think we should allow Big Tobacco to advertise to "inform" the public? Has he no concept of the quid pro quo nature of campaign spending and public policy? He's either delusional or he's a shill for the corrupt, rent-seeking rich.
He is a lawyer and he will make whatever argument the judges will buy regardless of logic or ethical considerations. In this case five conservative leaning judges bought it so now corporations can buy as much influence as they can afford; much like diary lobbyist group gave to Nixon and then Nixon went on to raise the price milk, back then it was a scandal now it is business as usual.
Free speech for corporations and super wealthy is disenfranchising “we the people” if free speech means funding campaigns. We have lost our way as a nation. We need to rethink what free speech is (carefully) or we risk being further disenfranchised. We certainly need to rethink how campaigns are financed. We the people need to take back what is ours.
Corporations literally start with the prefix "co" meaning joint/jointly. So how can the Supreme Court decide that it's just like an individual when by its very definition a corporation is a collective?
10:34 Same would apply to Roe vs. Wade then. If Citizen's United has to be accepted without objection, then all Supreme Court decisions should be, yes?
Excellent Video! It shows once again that well intended Policies often have the wrong and unintended Consequences. It also proves that it is about Culture and not Law. The Depth of Corruption depends on the Morals that Society has internalized. Remember "Greed is good"? Greed is an universal Problems, but American Policies and the Structure of Society and the political System have it made worse. There is also Corruption with British or German Politicians, but their political System relies MUCH less on outside Money Contributions - and also the revolving Door between Industry and Politics. Jobs for the Boys, Jobs for the Girls ...
I may be a lifelong democrat but I always like Senator John McCain. I agreed with him Maybe not all the time but there were definitely moments where I was impressed with his views. Honestly if we had to have a Republican in the White House right now I wish it was him God rest his soul
It’s so funny? depressing? nostalgic? to be watching these videos and immediately tell that they are pre 11/8/2016. I have a hard time watching any reporting before this day because it’s sad. You can look back and remember the feeling of stability and rationality that existed as a given. Sitting where we are now the warnings about too much corporate money involved in politics and the potential risks involved with destroying the form of government we all took for granted seem so obvious and undeniable today. I often feel as though at some point in 2016 we collectively stepped through a doorway/looking glass into a familiar yet ridiculous universe. A place where basic facts are debatable and saying something untrue is no longer about lying but more about the eye/ear of the beholder. It’s a dangerous place, similar to Wonderland. A place where it appears that people behaving like a mad hatter or a maniacal king or queen out speak and out number those of us who lived their previous entire lives in a world where sanity was a virtue. I want to know where the exit is. I think watching older news stories and documentaries pre 2016 stirs a sort of homesickness and sometimes that is just too painful for the reality of the reality we find ourselves in currently.
In business class in community college I was taught by my professors that a corporation is separate from the ones incorporating. Corporations are supposed to be separate entities and as far as them having a voice...I thought that applied to advertising and marketing and the products and or services they produced. That's what I was taught. When did that change...???
The man who thinks the people are against the Supreme Court needs to do a bit of reading. This is a power that’s as never given to the Supreme Court and it can be taken away from them. Remember the constitution and the government serve the people not the other way around.
Well, it is no longer considered illegal or dirty money just because they were made transparent and legal now. If it sounds scary to know that there were people carrying briefcases full of money back then, what would the level of paranoia be now that there are no physical traces used anymore and don't forget that money can even be transferred into offshore bank accounts too. RIP John McCain.
The US had some exemplary laws limiting power over press, banks and campaign donations ... why were all these laws removed? BTW, Rest in peace, Mr. McCain!
A super PAC to end super PACs? I think I've heard of something like that. "I'm using war as a business to end war as a business." -Senator Armstrong, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Well I'm really conflicted. My initial thought is: of course you should be able to speak as much as you want. We can't have limits on speech anymore than we can have limits on other forms of political activity. Do you think it's fair that some people can spend all day on political activism, while other people have to work? What if I passed a law that limited protesting to 10 hours per year. Do you think that would be fair? But I look at the outcome of a completely free system, and it does concern me.
@@xdmobb17x17 I am not sure i understand. Feel free to elaborate. Keep in mind I wrote this comment 5 years ago and would have to refresh my context. I think what I was getting at is: a corporate entity isn't an individual, but it is made of individuals. For instance, a newspaper isn't a person--but we dont think that means that it doesn't have free speech
Politics is the opposite of business: the professionals are the people who *aren't* getting paid. Name an effective movement that has no money involved, where everybody is a volunteer. The way to crush someone is to take away their money, chase away their donors or get them fired from their job. People with no money in the first place are much tougher to silence.
What's the difference if I donate $500 million to a campaign or if I spend $500 million to buy CNN and use them to spread propaganda to serve my political interests? Why do corporations/unions spend so much money in political campaigns? Because the government has the power to serve these corporations/unions. The government shouldn't have the power to serve particular interests groups.
The Government will always have the power to serve particular Interest Groups. Imagine the Government was basically just the Judicial, wouldnt there be interest in appointing specific Judges, and to get specific rulings? If the Government only made small laws, wouldnt there be an interest in those small laws? The basic Idea of Government is completely destroyed with that last sentence. I get what you're saying, but it is impossible to make a Government that will be complety be immune to Corruption, thats why you make it harder to commit Corruption.
I'm curious now how other countries elect leaders. How much money do politicians in, say, Mexico and Canda have to raise? Who all donates to political campaigns in France, Japan, Germany, Australia, India, Brasil etc? What do their political ads look like? Just wondering.
Who is the guy at 10:36 fooling? I guess Americans shouldn't question anything the Supreme Court does because whatever they do is good by definition, at least if you take his argument to its logical conclusion.
This same problem is going on in India under Modi government From developed to developing all countries are fed up of politicians is democracy is coming to its end
2014: "WATERGATE WAS THE SCANDAL TO END ALL POLITICAL SCANDALS"
2018: "Lol"
Outback Sam It's so ironic and even sad watching some of these retroreports now.
Very true. It seems America is incapable of learning from past mistakes.
funny they said that given the clinton scandals
Up until that point it was.
I had to make my laughter audible: LOL!!!!!
We have Forrest Gump to thank for these guys getting arrested.

This is the definition of an oligarchy.
If it happened these days, Nixon could have gotten away with it just by saying he denies it and he does recall. Nixon would be all set since times have changed since him.
He'd have gotten away with it if he had his own Fox News for back-up... Ailes had mentioned to him about creating such a system...
We live in different times, people are highly partisan and will excuse most bad behavior as long as they have an R or D next to their name.
Well that’s what he said, but there were recordings of him clearly talking about all this stuff
I wish John McCain would do more than talk the talk. He tends to say the right things and then vote against them when given the chance.
United States of Embarrassment what does that tell you? He’s a senile war monger.
T U M O R S
Until he voted to Obamacare last year. Thank god he had the sense to do that
Eamonn Prunty yeah, he really came through. He was one of the last honorable Republicans.
This comment has aged quite badly :P
7:58 Sir, your argument is the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
You are woefully uninformed.

He's not delusional, he's well paid.

What surprises me about this story is that most Americans ignore it. Only 60k views and the story has been up since 2014.
One year later it's 190k for some reason, maybe because of the Algorithm? But indeed the country seems too divided to prioritize campaign finance.
That doesn’t surprise me at all.
Not even ignore it, many Americans don’t even know it’s going on at all
Citizens united AKA why we need supreme court reform.
this literally makes me want to cry
Then cry.
Nice "democracy" you got there. If this isn't an oligarchy, I don't know what it is.
Corporations literally start with the prefix "co" meaning joint/jointly. So how can the Supreme Court decide that it's just like an individual when by its very definition a corporation is a collective?
I hate our government sometimes, especially all these monolithic super PACs and how untransparent the United States is.
Factuuual
untransparent = opaque

That narrator at 9:30 was on Vox in a story about voiceover artists. She is also the voice that inspired Siri.
President Nixon was just too ahead of his time
LOL and now we have citizens united. What a joke
Horrific.
"Exchanging government policy for money."
Sounds familiar....

One vote per dollar.
The GOP's favorite quips applied to elections: "Let the (economic) market decide, and might makes right."
one vote per dollar. thats cheap
Here in 2024
Great video! I really enjoy watching these.

Best show on TH-cam.
One step would be banning negative ads. There is no dignity in them.
Ahhhh a time when Americans trusted the media and cared about the truth
Nah thy were still fake

What about money for REPARATIONS for slavery and oppression
Why don't these videos get more views?
Trump self financed his campaign. it's good to be the king.
So an oligarchy?
I love Watergate so much. I wish I was alive then to see it play out. I would give everything for a time travel machine.
Free speech does not mean "disproportionate megaphone for the wealthy". It does not mean you can lie with impunity. That's why defamation laws exist.
No law...nor shall the right of the corporations to assemble.

Still very much relevant in today's political climate
How come we could not keep these laws in place .
1. Start a Super Pac to support the Constitution Party.2. Every U.S. citizen donates a dollar that's easily 320 million.3. Take our country back.
Fool really would have gotten re-elected but he just had to break-in
A super PAC to end super PACs? I think I've heard of something like that.

Very informative as always. I have agreed with John McCain in some ways with regards to moral values, although not on many policies.

Watching this in 2021 and things have only gotten worse.
10:34 The dumbest argument on any TH-cam video I have come across.
Exactly, it's the same Supreme Court that rendered the Dred Scott decision.
Dam you Forrest Gump what have you done.
I know exactly where that UPS store is in Raleigh💀
This is just like trump and Russia
6:43 Rest in peace
Reminds me of an old Who song.....Meet the new boss...Same as the old boss....
I just think of all that money from the last 25 years, wasted !!!
Let's just agree money runs this world. If God wasn't responsible for the rotation I wonder how much they would pay to spend it at their pace?
RIP america
I didn't know I could respect John Mccain much... man was I wrong!
White House the new Motel 6? Jajaja. So true.
It is also a slaughter house (think Khashoggi).
This same problem is going on in India under Modi government
From developed to developing all countries are fed up of politicians is democracy is coming to its end
Yep......I'd say there's still something wrong going on lol.
Rip john McCain
All the videos are in black in white.
It's not perfect, perhaps far from it but it's what we have for better or worse. Only thing to do is take care of yourself and your neighbors.
Heeeey political science class 👋🏼

Lmao, watching from 2020 this is all a joke. The amount of money that is in politics today compare to then is mind bogging.
7:30 Was that a dig at Romney?
Hmmmm.....
At 2:06 i'm distracted by the bald looking woman in the background
Ha.

The country is still For Sale. We may as well place a big "FOR SALE" sign over the U. S. Constitution and admit the truth.
This is why I don't vote. I don't have enough "free speech" to influence anything.
