Having served in the Marines I can tell you that it's hard to hear about sexual assault. Someone who was once your friend is now accused of rape. Or being raped. You want to believe that couldn't happen or that that person didn't do it. But it's good to have theses cases prosecuted outside of the unit environment. That will lead to justice and peace for those who are raped. And no safe place for those who commit that dishonorable crime.

The normalcy in the way she describes her attacks is just disgusting, that she has had to normalize it in her head because nothing really happened. This is despicable. Shame on men who see women as their property, as "theirs".... In my opinion, ESPECIALLY those in the military. You are supposed to be held and live to a higher standard. Shame on you.

Naval aviators and fighter pilots generally occupy the most sought after positions in military. Combat flying is demanding, dangerous and needs enourmous amounts of skill honing to be good at it. For these reasons, it's pretty clear that not just anyone can really become a pilot. They say that these people represent the sharpest tip of professional soldiers. I think we as civilians have all the right to expect reasonable and civil behaviour of these "highly selected professionals". I just find it hard to believe anyone who does raping in community gathering for fun could be responsible and fair executive in military chain of command. Not being chauvinistic jerk should be the absolute minimum criteria to wear uniform and represent your country

Vincent Cuttolo I am well versed in criminology. RAPE IS NOT ABOUT SEX! If rape were about sex then men who have access to plenty of consensual sex wouldn't be rapists. Rape is NOT a crime of passion it is a crime that is about power and control. Most rapists are thoughtful and plan their attacks. Even if they take an "opportunity" to sexually assault someone they have an MO. Hence when someone is caught multiple victims are likely to come forward with similar stories. It's clear by equating rape to murder and fighting you know very little about rape. Also one time sexual criminals are rare since IF those "one time" criminals get help it is usually found they have engaged in other non consensual acts. It is rare, (with the exception of mob mentality & even then many hang back & don't participate) that those not inclined to rape just happen to one day rape.
If your argument is that all the high stress of military life encourages rape then clearly it matters not who the person rapes and they will rape male service members too.
I don't think that means you exclude women from the ranks, It means you prosecute and exclude those who commit crimes from your ranks.
Now I'll leave you to give more reasons why men NEED to rape because um reasons that aren't real.

I served for 15 years in a tier 1 unit. I was fortunate never to come across any of this. I would like only to add that sexual assault (or any assault) WITHIN a military is not only a criminal and moral issue it is also a security issue. A military cannot operate successfully if its own are under assault from within. No human can serve effectively if they are in fear and distrust of their peers and commanders.
As far as opening positions to women, this too should have been done under security considerations alone. You need good people where you can get them. Not allowing half the population to even be considered for a job is only harming your ability to get the best person possible. So again, even without any ethical consideration, this would be the right move to make.
But I would also like to offer a warning from my experience: I would not recommend soldering for women. But If they choose to pursue it, and they are good at it, then we need every good person we can get. Usually the military is chasing after every recruit they can. This leaves a sub par pool of candidates. Discrimination of any kind is not something we can afford. Anyone saying otherwise does not have the best interest of the American people at heart.

I briefly considered joining the military, on and off. But for every good thing, there were overwhelming negatives. I just can't cover up for pigs, incompetents, or liars. From this, to the Aviano, Italy gondola coverup, I wouldn't have been the kind of guy that could "get with the program." Unfortunately, the military is setup to drive people like me out. As for Lt. Coughlin and Anita Hill, they set in motion changes that impacted me later. When AmeriCorps was setup, a lot of retired military were in leadership positions, and they did get the memo on sexual harassment. Much of our training was top-notch because the leadership did their jobs and fully supported mandates.

I had to endure racial harassment in the Navy. Too many White men channeled their sexual insecurities into pranks on Black men. I learned that you should never join an organization where you can’t charge someone with BATTERY if the need arises. Unfortunately , you can’t file a lawsuit against other service members.

I was in Iraq 2005. Keeping a low profile, I actually met an USAFA officer charged for the conduct. He said he was held back one academic year and was required to immediately pursue his Master's Degree to return to pace with his peers. This also became political among the women officers as a career stepping stool. I watched Captains and Majors literally debate any order given to them from "above". In the early stages of "me too", any perceived uncomfortable action was placed in light of any current scandal. There was entirely too much debate over otherwise specific orders. I had been in service over 20 years at that point. THEY finally realized entire careers had to be adjusted for the political event "pocket" to end its abuse.
