I watched the live interview where it was disclosed as a false story and I remember Rev. Sharpton saying that it did not matter that it did not happen because it could have happened. I was very disappointed and thought that he had probably hurt the advancement of his people more than he knew. When lies can be accepted as truth, then no story has any reason to exist. I am a 40-something who grew up in the NY area, and I think folks should put this in context. There were many legitimate racially charged incidents in that area in the 80s (Howard Beach, Bernie Goetz, Long Island and Staten Island were notorious, etc), so it was easy for people to think the same thing was going on with Brawley. Even today with BLM and police shootings, people are so quick to jump on the protest bandwagon instead of stopping to think about what is actually going on. For example, there was a Black guy in VA a few years ago who was shot by police 9 times. People online, including his family, claimed that he had been murdered by police. Well, little did they know that he had tried to grab the cop's gun out of the holster and was shot by a second officer after he managed to force the cop into the cruiser and put it in gear. People like this do not deserve the support of the Black community or other anti-racists, and I say this as a person of color myself.

We actually based charges on comments they made well after the NY Times exposed this is "most likely" a hoax. We gave the benefit of doubt that their motives were pure up to the point where it became clear that the Assistant DA could not have been involved. We also hit the two lawyers harder because they ought to have known better while Sharpton was just a spokesperson. We caught flack from both sides-The NY Post called us "pinheads" which was a little hurtful because it was 6 people trying to "cut the baby in half" and no one was 100% pleased with the numbers we came up with.

I watched the live interview where it was disclosed as a false story and I remember Rev. Sharpton saying that it did not matter that it did not happen because it could have happened. I was very disappointed and thought that he had probably hurt the advancement of his people more than he knew. When lies can be accepted as truth, then no story has any reason to exist. And the people who tell them have no reason to be believed.

I am a 40-something who grew up in the NY area, and I think folks should put this in context. There were many legitimate racially charged incidents in that area in the 80s (Howard Beach, Bernie Goetz, Long Island and Staten Island were notorious, etc), so it was easy for people to think the same thing was going on with Brawley. Even today with BLM and police shootings, people are so quick to jump on the protest bandwagon instead of stopping to think about what is actually going on. For example, there was a Black guy in VA a few years ago who was shot by police 9 times. People online, including his family, claimed that he had been murdered by police. Well, little did they know that he had tried to grab the cop's gun out of the holster and was shot by a second officer after he managed to force the cop into the cruiser and put it in gear. People like this do not deserve the support of the Black community or other anti-racists, and I say this as a person of color myself.

I served on the jury that found that an assistant DA in Dutchess county was defamed by Mason, Maddox and Sharpton. We actually based charges on comments they made well after the NY Times exposed this is "most likely" a hoax. We gave the benefit of doubt that their motives were pure up to the point where it became clear that the Assistant DA could not have been involved. We also hit the two lawyers harder because they ought to have known better while Sharpton was just a spokesperson. We caught flack from both sides-The NY Post called us "pinheads" which was a little hurtful because it was 6 people trying to "cut the baby in half" and no one was 100% pleased with the numbers we came up with.
