Another great list, I'm surprised I had never heard of number 4 before. The crazy thing is how if we consider "marketing" in a wider sense (i.e. more than traditional adverts), this could quite easily be a top 20. Think $599, "DS is a babysitting tool", the PS3 "Cherry" ad etc. Sony somehow seems especially drawn to excessive, hyperbolic, and just wacky marketing.
@@PutlerHuyIo You say a couple...Nah, she's bigger than that. At least in the 90's and mid-2000's. The album was the highest seller in the US in 2005 and 2nd highest in the world, having sold over 10 million copies 😲. The PSP came out in 2006, they absolutely would've been good with using her.
This just reinforces my notion that marketers, far from being given primacy in the corporate food chain and allowed to swing their weight around as they please, should be treated with a level of supervision and restriction that makes Mall-Wart goldfish look free range.
I'm Dutch and I've never heard of that billboard thing, but you can tell this was quite a while ago considering people were happy the Netherlands was appearing in international news no matter what it was.
Dammit Sony, why can't you just say "we've made a really good product that you'll probably enjoy" rather than all this edgelord shit? We know it'll be good, you haven't released a bad console in the last 25yrs, just tell us the specs and maybe make fun of Xbox players and be done with it.
Because whilst that speaks to gamers, it doesn't speak to the people who aren't. Advertising campaigns like these aren't trying to sell products to people that are aware of the products and likely going to buy the products already but non-gamers and those who's loyalties perhaps lie elsewhere. And do you know what gets people's attention? 'Edgelord shit' because it not only gets noticed but gets people emotionally involved. And be honest, you might not like this style of advertising but can you remember the last advertising campaign for anything that just politely gave you the details?
My god, Sony have made some absolutely horrendous decisions with their advertising partners, both past and present. I can't fully articulate just how mindblowing it is to see them making the same mistakes repeatedly. That said, I'm unusually hyped about buying a PS5 right now...

One of the main things I remember about the PSP (aside from one of my cousins having one) was the one news story about kids sneaking it into schools and watching... not so family-friendly films on the device, to put it nicely. It even garnered the nickname "PlayStation Porn-able". No seriously. I didn't believe it at first, but then I saw it again online, and that's when I knew it wasn't a hoax.
What marketing? Sony hasn't yet started to market the PS5. The only things we've had so far are a controller reveal and Mark Cerny's in-depth explanation of the PS5's hardware.
@@AlexTenThousand I'd argue that the radio silence is bad currently since their release window is the end of this year. @@retrogamesmadeeasy8058 The PSP is dead because it came to the end of its life. Why is the Game Boy dead? Same reason. As for the Vita it didn't offer enough to entice people away from the 3DS which had more going for it.
It seems like most of these weren't "disastrous fails" at all, considering almost all of them apparently boosted sales in the long run and the outrages were made up.
Rock Star Games did little to no advertising for the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Due to the media reporting about the games' extreme content, it was nothing but free advertising for them
We all know that with the knowledge of the crunch being involved with the Last of Us Part 2 and the leaked plot that it’s going to be hard to push Abby as the protagonist especially what happened with Ellie and Joel.
The first entry on this list is for a marketing campaign that cost relatively little (having only been printed in a handful of publications), and resulted in news outlets and outraged politicians generating a ton of free non-negative (consumers didn't really think there was anything wrong) publicity for both one specific game and the console as a whole. If you ask me, that's a legendary publicity WIN, not a "disastrous marketing fail"!
No, check out any publications made by the black people in the 70s or better yet (Blackopalaition films) around the same time and you get an extreme reaction in the opposite direction.
Aren't the Dutch the ones that have that racist Christmas parade with the slave where people do blackface? I mean, when it's still ongoing as of last Christmas & only pretty recently getting major backlash I can definitely see why people barely seemed to notice there was a problem with that ad at the time.
Statistically, only 1 in 100 or 1 % of the Catholic Church engages in pederast, the r****g of children. TH-cam censors that word for some reason. You would be more correct in your condescension to say more priests are guilty of fornication with women. Statistically, that's 2 in 100, or 2%. And its 50 / 50 between men and women. Nuns are just as tempted as priests, friars, and monks. The fact that Interpol records it so low is that most people choosing to go into that life do respect the job. @Usuário Sarcástico I'm not going to pretend to know what the media was doing in the 90's since I was a dumb teenager who didn't pay any attention to politics. But I did pay attention to video games. And here in the United States it was the Religious Right Wing, particularly in Congress, that was doing whatever they could to censor video games. It's what got Night Trap pulled off of many large store shelves, it's what made Nintendo remove the blood from Mortal Kombat. It's why the games industry decided to start the ESRB, which was the only way that Congress was going to allow them to continue to operate without giving themselves direct control over what content could and couldn't be put into video games going forward. They were also trying to censor TV shows like The Simpsons, Married With Children and Beavis and Butt-Head.

This just reinforces my notion that marketers, far from being given primacy in the corporate food chain and allowed to swing their weight around as they please, should be treated with a level of supervision and restriction that makes Mall-Wart goldfish look free range.
Disney and almost any other company in any era are just full of marketers with dick swinging tactics. It’s primarily because of money.

Ah yes, the Thomas the Tank Engine beating up the Heavy and Scout video. I always knew you were a man of culture, Larry.
And you as well, with that avatar.
Wanna know how the DS rekt the PSP hard? Sony's idiotic and abysmal ads set it's fate.

From the times that number TH-camr broughrt up the subject, notifications don't always work. For example, a that was on a bell, occur hour before the same video appear in my subscription feed. That critical to a TH-camr.

Sony (Interactive Entertainment) could probably get away with everything to be honest
2:30 Oh, so that's why the alpha version of Wipeout was in Hackers.
Each of Sony's public apologies ends up being backhanded.
Pretty much the entire marketing of the PS5 lol
Yeah, when you consider how badly Microsoft handled the Xbox One, the tables have completely turned around this time.
Dropping huge amounts of money around that time of the year is risky due to the delayed shipping and people usually buying around august and september to make sure the thing is in for christmas. That and we will be seeing a wave of delayed shipping from the Corona Outbreak and in some places, a wave two is predicted. Thiey need to start marketing soon, or else they will lose the general audience's attention to everything else going on in the world.
All these debacles must have had the Sony execs pulling their hair out like a desperate bid to resemble Peter Molyneux.

2. Ran into this page on the BBC website that features that image of the Charlies, titled "Enormous anthems and leftfield gems in one handpicked 90s mixtape. Sorted." www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p07l2394
The charlatans band is actually more likely to be shown because the left field band has videos which have been DMCA’D on TH-cam every day.

The first entry on this list is for a marketing campaign that cost relatively little (having only been printed in a handful of publications), and resulted in news outlets and outraged politicians generating a ton of free non-negative (consumers didn't really think there was anything wrong) publicity for both one specific game and the console as a whole.
