I am Aaron Thomas mentioned about 7 minutes in. While I did hear from the whole world that they weren’t happy about my Ratchet & Clank score, Jeff did his job as EIC and did his best to insulate me from the business pressures he received as a result of this “horrible” score. Jeff’s boss was not as professional and because of him I could tell there was some fallout. I do remember hearing that Sony canceled some advertising and an appearance in On The Spot that week because of the score.
Fun fact: Several years later I went on to work for PlayStation for 5 years, and one of my interviews took place in the “Ratchet” conference room, and the other in “Clank.”

Inevitably, several years down the road once all of the hype and fanboy fervor dies down, people always come around to agree with these more balanced reviews too. People claim that reviewers are biased and/or paid off, and then go into full on hivemind outrage if a reviewer gives virtually any Nintendo game less than a 9. People just get blinders about a new hotness in an established lineage, especially when they haven't gotten to play it yet (which I think was true at the time for Twilight Princess).
You can see much the same thing even today. The FFVII remake's probably around an 8.8/10 (I'd even say that's generous), but it's at least a year until you get to say that without the knives coming out.

I hate how people keep talking about how "it's a true open world!" meanwhile the amount of sacrifices they had to make to the combat system with the shitty 4 enemy types that get stronger universally are pretty much as good as having no enemies at all, it's an open world where you can go anywhere but do nothing.

This reminds me of the reeeeing of certain wing of the internet and media after Black Panther got a review that wasn't an unbridled praise and a perfect score. And it was over a week before the movie even came out in theatres, all the rotten tomatoes reviews were from "critiques" and "movie journalists".

where they would talk about and play various video games and giving a rating based on if it was good or not and worth picking up.

Never mind MXC was on Spike while X Play, and Anime Unleashed were on Tech TV/G4.
