- After riding my Yamaha TW200 over 13,000 miles, my stock front sprocket is finally worn out to the point where it's skipping teeth under heavy load. The rear sprocket was replaced with a 47 tooth shortly after buying the bike new. The chain was also replaced at about 7000 miles since the stock chain stretched out quickly. Now it's time to replace both sprockets and chain because mixing new and old parts together will cause them to wear out quicker. So it's best to replace everything all at once unless the bike is brand new. I will be using an X-ring chain and slightly tweaking my gear ratio this time around. @@TDubsKid Me again. I do almost all my own wrenching for my vehicles. Presently, my son and I have 14 bikes. 10 are vintage like the Kawasaki 500 triples. Some old YSRs and JT 1 Yamahas . I also have a Grom and my ‘87 TW. So I’ll play around with the carb on it it soon. The Welch plug is out. But the bike generally runs crappy. Back firing while de-accelerating down hill and hesitations and low power. I live on the west coast of British Columbia but ride at all kinds of elevations. Do you have a video of what can help these carbs or should it be replaced?

Excellent vid. I'm probably twice your age, used to be an aviation mechanic and own a TW200. Your vids are fantastic with accurate info, thorough content and have been helpful.
These little bits may help.
Chain adjustment: Because of the slop between the hole in the snail adjuster and the axle, after adjusting both snail adjusters and before tightening the axel nut, I take a mallet and tap both ends of the axel toward the front of the bike. The axel will move forward a little and this takes out any slop between the snail adjusters and axel ends, eliminating any misalignment of the axel due to this slop. I also wrote on the swing arm, with a paint pen, the axel/nut sizes and torque spec. This way I just grab the right tools and go to work.
Changing rear sprocket: I simply used an open end wrench to hold the bolt heads while turning the nuts on the back side, both during disassembly and reassembly while torquing from the back side. This eliminated both the need to replace the lock plates and the work associated with straightening and bending the tabs on these plates. It is also important to degrease fastener threads when using lock-tight. Break cleaner works well. Any lubricant left on either the male or female threads will interfere with lock-tight's ability to hold as intended.

Great how to video!! Appreciate you taking the time to film while doing these projects and editing it all. Just did this swap and your video was extremely helpful. I did however use a DID Xring chain with 124 links, but still had to remove a link for it to fit properly for some reason 🤔

Great work! So much great info and editing! I'm still running the stock chain and it slipped off last summer and jammed between the sprocket and swing arm locking up the rear, think its time for a new chain this spring haha

This video is SO helpful. Thank you for the time it took to do it. I'm working on this job now and I've watched it numerous times to make sure I don't screw anything up. The biggest problem is the panhead screws in the case not wanting to come out of my 2000 TW. I'll deal w/ that today.

glad you found it helpful! no problem, oh yeah those can be a huge pain, the are jis screws similar but different than Phillips. you can replace them with regular hex bolts

Did you notice any difference in pulling in 1st or 2nd gear? Is it still a tractor in low gear?
from stock yes there was a big difference, but going from 14/47 to 15/50 didn't really notice much difference maybe slightly but not much, it's still a tractor in low gear though haha

@@TDubsKid Got a 44 rear and a 14 front installed. Testing tomorrow.. The 428 chain with 118 links fit perfect on #1 snail. That calculator site said 106 but it is full of popups and hard to use. You were partly the reason I bought the TW. The other reason is that the Sondors Metacycle I ordered in May 2019, is about 6 months late and I wanted a bike for this season not for 2022. Great video! I have a XT225, which is a close sibling of the TW200. I learn a lot from your videos that I can apply to the XT225. This project was significantly more involved than the same work would be on the XT225.
I’m also making my first Moab, UT trip with the XT225. I’ll be there 3/17 through 3/19. Would fun if our paths crossed.

I also replaced the both chain and the two sprockets few days back. Three teeth were broken in the front sprocket. Had to replace the rear sprocket bolt also as threads were damaged.

Well got a new xring chain and sprocket, went on easy. Well except I used a pair of vise grips and small nut to press home the master link. Also checked the valves after watching your video and that was easy also, great job. 9000km and no adjustment needed, lucky eh? Thanks again.@@TDubsKid

@@TDubsKid I ended up unplugging the wire bundles from the top to make it easier to route them. That worked well, but I think that was the hardest part of the job!
Following your wise advice, since it's been decades since I worked on motors, took the TDub to my LBS, and had both sprockets changed, as well as new bars & risers added, and a USB port hooked up. Haven't had the chance yet to get her out on the highway, but on the forest roads she's noticeably faster. On our 2 lane blacktops, even though the speed limit's 50mph, pretty much everybody goes 60+! Your vids are great, and little by little I'm getting back into working on the bike myself. Thanks for such detail and great presentation, it really helps!

@@TDubsKid at exactly 1000 miles my factory chain broke while i was riding alone in the middle of the desert... luckily someone saw it happened and gave me a ride back to my car... now researching getting an X chain and replacing both sprockets
dang, those stock chains are quite sketchy. mine would stretch like crazy even on short rides. my x ring chain hasn't even stretched slightly yet even after about 200 miles it's a great way to go

Excellent detail TDK. When I changed my rear sprocket I did not need to bend those tabs. All I did was remove the nut and the tabs keep the bolt from turning. Thanks for doing this as I am going to do 15t on the front so this really helps.

@@TDubsKid 15/47 installed and its much better. Man that 14 is a tiny thing but at 2600 miles, it was still in good shape except very shiny in the valleys but the tips and sides were fine.
You have a sick channel man, easy to watch and listen to you. I think you need a big viral video to get the viewer count you deserve. Maybe a two week trek through some rough terrain then different small towns you visit. My favorite part about living in NorCal was the one road towns they had everywhere, connected to a bunch of offroad trails. I'm sure there aren't as many where you live but I'm sure there are some connected some how. Good luck, great vids.

No problem man, you deserve it. Your editing and drone footage is pretty damn good and tastefully done. I don't even own a TW but may some day. The main thing holding me back is that I'm a lanky 6'4 guy and feel like Lurch on one. Haven't sat on one with risers though, I don't necessarily hate low seats. If you were my height which bike would you choose that is close to a TW?

OMG glad my DRZ/SM 400 is easier then that wow . Front cover is just over sprocket not motor , that sucks . Great how to loved it so detailed !
yeah most bikes you remove a plastic cover then you can remove the front sprocket in like 5 minutes haha. oh well hopefully the new sprockets and chain will last till 30k miles. thanks! glad you enjoyed it 😀

You are awesome. Here I am again with another comment. Now it's about 2 years later when I messed with the rear sprocket size and know what size I like. And as the bike was used when I purchased it and the front sprocket and chain are definitely showing wear, I'm changing both sprockets and the chain to new. Being a retired aviation mechanic. I could do this work on my own while looking up the specs, etc. However, your vids make it so easy. I actually plan to take my lap-top to the shop and as I do the change, start and stop your vid. This will make it super easy. Thanks again.
PS, When do you plan to change your fork oil? I'll be doing this soon when I change my front tire and would like to see your vid on this. I plan to watch your vid as I change the front tire. :)

haha yeah, it took a while to make this. partly because I had to order some new parts halfway through. thanks! haha I wish, I want to get a supermoto someday, I think the front sprocket is super easy on the DRZ400, haha chains are pretty easy after you do one for the first time. it won't disappoint! thanks ride safe as well 😃🏍⛺
