I went from a 50T rear to a 43T I think. It much improved the top end rev and didn't notice much lost in 1st gear pull. Overall it made the bike far more streetable without much loss in hill climbing. It's a good all around combo.
Wow!! That is a big jump. That's awesome that it didn't really affect the lower end. With my weight it might be a different story. I bet it made it loads better on the road. Thanks Billy!
In my opinion the bike should have came with a 47 it'll still climb a tree.. my two sprockets are a 45 and a 44 be careful with that 43 that's a lot of force on the chain slider you're going to wear through that thing fast, keep an eye on it. ✌️
@trentluadtke1096 thanks for the specific info, are you wearing it out fast with the 44? Would a changing the front AND rear reduce wear on it you think? I ordered a 44 and a 42..
Running a 13/62. 95% offroad. Strawberry area and sometimes Idaho. Single-track is always the final destination. Used to run a 70 rear but that was just to low unless packing elk quarters out of a bottom
I honestly can't remember. I think I ordered the longest x ring or o ring I could find and cut down some links. I'll try to get down to storage and measure it. I only run it about 35mph with Duro V2 on back and largest M5B front. Great trail goat for hunting. Ran 13/70 on my other TW it was crazy low but hunting bike only
Great video and thanks for taking the time to make all the TW videos you do. I've had my 21 TW for about 2 months and I just changed my rear sprocket to 45 2 days ago. I'm between 6'2" and 6'3" and weigh 190 and I was pleasantly surprised how much more streetable the TW is with the 45 rear. I live in the tidewater of Virginia so there's not much hill climbing here but I'll see how things go when I go to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Hey David! That looks like some gorgeous country to live in! That close the rivers and how green it all is out there! I'm glad to hear that the 45t rear sprocket is working well. I have always wondered what it would be like for me. I have a lot of hills where I live and don't know what it would do with my weight. I need about 10 more TW's so I can set them all up differently. The Blue Ridge Mountains would be an awesome place to ride! Thanks for watching and for the comment. Here's to many more happy miles!
Great vid! Tip: when changing the rear sprocket you can take the bolts out by twos without bending the tabs. Same with install. love my 47t with 2 up around town.
Well crap, I just pictured in my head exactly how that would go! Thanks for pointing that out! Maybe I really should look into the 47t. Like I said earlier, I think I need another TW!
Hi Matt, good video. I went down to the 47 in the rear, was nice for highway and you could use 1st gear for more than 10ft, lol. I have been using my other larger bike for highway now & the TW is just for the trails now, so I ordered a 52 & am going to install that one after your recommendations & satisfaction with the 52.
After extensive research and self analysis I have determined that a 15/49 will work for me. Scheduled and rescheduled then scheduled again for spring installation. Shit keeps getting in my way. The whole shootin match. Sprockets, chain, seals and oil change. I’ll take pictures. Happy New Year!🥳
I haven't changed mine out (stock) because I love to follow horse trails and what not, which often require about 1/2 mile an hour it seems like :). Your video had me laughing about one thing though. You mentioned that replacing the rear sprocket is easier than replacing the front sprocket, but then you pointed out (correctly) that you'll have to replace the front sprocket anyway. Made me chuckle. I'm at 7,500 RPM or slightly higher (if I remember correctly) at 55mph, and running out of juice at about 62mph on a windless flat road. The 52 tooth might be an even better option for me, but I'm nervous about losing any more cruising speed.
You're right! I did mention that it is easier to swap out the rear sprocket because you and I both know that there will be folks who don't swap out all three together like it is recommended. I had to add both of those in there! Great catch! Yeah, I lose power around 64 mph but it is screaming while I do. I don't try to hold that rpm for too long but it'll do it. I haven't noticed too much of a loss of speed with the 62. I think I need to do a speed run with it just to verify for you.
I am running the 47 rear. I ride 70/30 street and off road. I weigh 225. This gearing works well around town. Our speed limits are a max of 55. I find myself using 2nd and up . Off road, it is geared to my liking. When this set wears out, I will replace them with 14/49.
Hey Lenny! Have you used that set up for off road as well? Does it do good? You're closer to my weight and I have wondered if it would haul me around where I go.
13/50? That is about the same as what I am running with the 14/52. Stock isn't bad for most everything, I just really like having that little extra lower end grunt.
I have a 2023 TW200 that I want to change the OEM chain on. I only have 998 miles on it and was wonder if I need to change the Sprockets on it also with the low mileage? They recommend doing the Sprocket change but with not much use on tn3m do I need to? Thanks Matt. James.
I went with a 52 tooth rear because I thought I would be off road most of the time, on the farm. That turned out to be wrong and I am actually on the road mostly where the speed limit is 100 km an hour (63 mph). I am thinking of going back, maybe even to a 47 tooth rear sprocket.
@@MOBStreet83 Tried the 47-tooth rear sprocket but it just did not have the effect I need so I went down to a 45-tooth. Seems to have hit the sweet spot.
Hey Gary! Good point. I had always heard that 1 tooth in the front was equal to 2-3 in the rear. I should've checked to see what the gear ratio difference would be between the 13/50 (3.84-1) and the 14/52 (3.714-1). Maybe I will do that ratio on the 2022! Thanks for pointing that out!
Nice vid. Ya I’m running 15-50 Works great for where I live. And yes the stock chain doesn’t last long. My 2020 has 5000km on it and I’m still in the same stock 50t rear with minimal wear and same with the 15t. Running a niche gold x ring. 👍
Thanks for the video Matt. I tried a 47 tooth rear back when I got my '05. I thought it dogged it down on the highway with my fat butt on it (240#). I went back to the 50 tooth. I still need to hit a highway here and there, so the 50 feels about right for me. BTW, I'm at 600' elevation. I wonder if your higher elevation has some to do with your preference as well? Have you played with jetting? I wonder if the factory's leaner jetting helps you at the higher elevation?
Hey Gene! I think there are a lot of factors to take into consideration when choosing a sprocket and weight and elevation are definitely two to look at. The 52t has been awesome and I'm thinking I might do a 13/50 on the 2021 to see the difference there? 🤔
Thanks for the video! I’m ready to change out the rear sprocket as I would like to get more speed on the highway with lower RPMs at the top end. I only weigh 160 pounds. Would love your thoughts as far as to which size I should change out to. Thinking of 47 probably.
Hey Jason! My father in law has the 47t rear sprocket and loves it. He is around 200lbs and it carries him just fine and it increased his mileage to over 90mpg. Not lying either, he has checked a couple times. He rides pretty mellow though. I think if you gonna ride the road more that 47t would be fine.
I believe for most riders that stock gearing or even the 47 would be perfect but I'm guessing for the hunting crowd or riders like me that 52t sounds better. I need a 52 so I can test out some things in little moab lol
I think for most riders it is a good setup as well. I got along okay with it for quite a while before I switched. But, that 52t I've been really happy with.
Bought a JT sprocket 55 tooth.. I assume??????? The letters on the JT sprocket should be to the outside ?? The sprocket has a milled out dish .. so I think ? The letters should show to the outside? Can you confirm???
Hey, Matt. Please disregard. It was simple. Just need a short handle ratchet, 12 mm socket, and somebody with a hand small enough to fit between the spokes.
I just picked up a used 2019 that has a 47 tooth rear sprocket installed. He gave me the stock one also. It’s quite difficult to get the front wheel up, and I really wanna ride wheelies with it. Would it be worth the trouble to change it back to stock?
Hey! Congrats on the new bike. I apologize, I thought I had commented back a few days ago. Me personally, I would put the 50 tooth back on. I have one with a 52 tooth and the other is the stock 50 tooth and I prefer the 52. It still has about the same top end speed and it has a lot more bottom end grunt over the stock. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching!
I've had good experience going 47T rear with stock front. Gained 3-4 mph and 3-4 mpg at freeway speeds and the motor just sounds happier. Ideally will 6-speed swap someday and get the best of both worlds for low 1st gear trail crawling as well.
@@MOBStreet83 For sure. I thought I remembered reading that swapping it with the XT225 motor at the same time was not too bad to swap in. And the XT motor supposed to have a good bit more power (or more easily upgraded?)
I'm an average sort of rider, and frankly I ride on the road a lot and not as much as I'd like on trails. I'm happy with the stock gearing, and I think I'll just leave it alone.
