OUTSTANDING DIY video! Watched once, went & did it. Super easy. My Tdub has 760 miles so this was 1st check for valve clearance. As found was (int/exh) .005/.007, adjusted to .003/.005. Thank you Sir! Also watched your excellent oil change video when I did 1st oil change at 500 miles.

Very well done. Usually I get board waiting for the actual video to start and just as board wishing they would speak faster and get to the point. This was spot on!
Tdubskid, you are are great teacher. You explain the procedure very well this is why I’m going to adjust my Valves when they are due. Sure saves a lot of money having a shop do it and also the satisfaction of doing this myself. Thanks, Ddubskid. James
Thanks 👍 glad to help, yeah plus you know how it was done and if it was even done right, most shops are flat rate so Techs are incentivized to work as quickly as possible. plus some techs have no idea what they are doing and screw stuff up, some are really good, it's a roll of the dice. i'm in the automotive industry, I imagine motorcycle shops are similar
Got a tw this year. Had to buy a bw200 when a good one came available near me recently as well. The service manual is amazing, but It helps to see it done first. You’re youtube famous bro! I appreciate your content.Couldn’t find one of your videos on cam chain tightening…..( if tw don’t have, that’s on me)
very nice! glad you were able to snag one. true, I started making videos on the TW because no one else really was at the time. Glad you enjoy the vids. yeah the new TW's have an auto tensioner so I have never messed with it yet.
When you get to the point you need to rebuild your top end, I know people would appreciate a video on that. I am having a heck of a time trying to replace my valves.
@@TDubsKid it's definitely a good lesson for people to make sure to do proper maintenance. Unfortunately like my bike if you buy used you can be gambling a bit. Oh well, it is a learning experience.
Thanks for the great video. I would like to point out something, though. In the video description you list electric start as a feature that was added on the later TWs. In fact, every TW200 ever built came with electric start. The first 13 years of production had both kick and electric.
Your vids are thorough and outstanding in ALL aspects! THANKS for taking the time to make and share them. This is greatly appreciated and GREAT ATTENTION TO DETAIL!!!
Thanks TDubs. I refer to this valve adjustment video and your oil change video all the time. I have an 85 Yamaha XT200, which is basically the same motor as what is in your TW. P.S. I tried doing the valve adjustment with a 10mm wrench and needle nose pliers. I finally got the valves within spec, but it was a PIA. I ordered the valve adjustment tool for next time, it will be much easier. Thanks again.
My friend gave me an 03 or 04 tw200. Which I'm super thankful about it because I was really in need of a vehicle that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg for gas. let alone my very own vehicle. He told me it needed a valve adjustment and a timing chain adjustment. my dad and I noticed the lines on the bottom were way off when the piston was on top. we both gave it a whirl but forgot to tighten the bolt down on the sprocket up top of the motor. Which it caused some serious issues the valves bent, the arm of the valve tad bit on the intake snapped, dalve pin was shredded off a couple other things happened. Anyway we got all the OEM parts for the bike about last weekend and got it rebuilt again everything was fine. We even broke in the motor before anything else. When we checked the oil flow on the top end it was all good. I thought it was a little odd though that there was more compression than usual but it still started right up with one turnover. Yesterday I took it out for a ride and the temps were going really high. aaand when it was immediately cooling down was when the motor was boogging down trying to shut itself off. And oil was everywhere the bike was smoking. I immediately used the kill switch to shut off the motor. we forgot to screw the bolt down that checks for oil flow on the top end. And thankfully the screw was still somewhere on the bike when it was towed home. Now it needs a valve reset and I'm hoping that there's no other issues on the rise. like bent valves or screwed up piston. I did try valve adjustments today to see if I can do it. Or if it'll help any. I made it worse lol as soon as I heard the ticking was worse than before I know I don goofed but I immediately shut it off after a couple seconds. So I left it there. Anyway would you happen to have any advice? I really want to take care of this bike and my dad is too tired and sick to help me with it. Thank you for your time! :)
By the way I like your videos I like the simplicity and details of doing the work and maintaining the bike. As well as the travel videos those are pretty cool xD.
Excellent video. I did not have the special tool and used needle nose pliers. That works too, but took me a couple of tries to get it just right. Now time to clean the carb because I think my problem is the pilot jet, but I thought I would do this service while I had it apart. Turns out it was time as I was 0.005 on the intake and probably 0.07 on the exhaust (strangely I don't have a 0.007 gauge it goes from 0.006 to 0.008), so it was time. I ended up 0.003 on the intake and 0.004 on the exhaust (about).
Hey tdubs! I don’t have a tw200 but I’ve been subbed for a while now and love your videos. I just had a customer drop off a tw200 for a valve adjustment (and a long list of other stuff) and I’m so glad I knew who to search for. Thanks for your technical videos! And the other ones too.
Awesome video, makes much less afraid to tackle this job on my Zongshen Sierra/ZS 200 GY-2. The engine and a lot of other parts are practically identical, and most TW200 procedures translate well to it!
thanks! yeah I though it would be good to explain what is going on for people who are new to how engines work. gottcha, yeah a bigger tank would be nice but I love the look of the stock one
Hi TDubsKid, picked up a TW200 and love your channel, was a big deciding factor in the bike I bought, your videos are top notch. I am about to upgrade my exhaust and was wondering if you will be doing a plug chop and jetting video any time soon? I live at sea level and don’t typically climb much higher then 1000’, some people say re jet and some don’t... thanks again for all the awesome content! Keep it up
hey awesome to hear :) glad your enjoying the videos. gottcha and that is on my list of videos but probably won't be soon I'm working on sooo many other videos already and i'm riding a lot more in the summer. yeah I would definitely would rejet if your at sea level though. i'm at 6000 feet and ride up to 12,000 feet sometimes. thanks again maybe I can try to fit the plug chop and carb video in soon but probably wouldn't be for another couple weeks
Btw, I started watching your videos about a week or so ago and I binge watch more and more . You have quite an uplifting attitude and editing skills. The talking rocks in the background is a great touch!
Very detailed explanation and really loved it. Please can you tell me how to decrease the consumption of fuel on my YAMAHA AG 200 CC as its really robbing my pockets.
Thanks, crazy to hear since my Tw200 can get 90mpg here. Thats like almost free. I would say try any ride 20-30 mph thats the best fuel mileage i think
Hi Tdubskid! Greetings from Spain! I have a 2009 TW200 and find videos very useful and encouraging. Congratulations! I suggest a video on carburetor cleaning, adjustment and maintenance. You may have done it and I missed it. In that case, sorry in advance. Best regards
@@TDubsKid Thanks! The engine of my TW seems to run fine, bit CO² emissions are todo high. Adjustment of carburetor is essential to avoid high emissions, but probably the most technical issue on a TW200. Looking fordward ti tour video on that! Thanks again and best regards
half way there on adjusting valves had to stop due the lack of light, thanks again for the video. i have a 2003 and i have a small can looking component on the right side of the bike that leads from fuel to it to carb wht is?
nice! no harm in waiting till the morning to finish haha no problem. that just takes gas fumes from the tank and burns them in the engine instead of venting it to the air. only tw's originally sold in California have it for emissions
This is a super helpful video-I just ordered a valve/tappet wrench so I can do this more easily at home. Have you adjusted your jetting at all? I know the TWs generally run pretty lean from the dealer/etc. Mine sounds/feels like its running at least a little lean (hearing some popping/etc. during down shifting and what not). I know you installed the DG exhaust, so curious if you had to also adjust jetting at the same time? It'd be great to have a TW specific video on jetting/etc. Thanks for all the great maintenance videos.
glad you found it useful! nice. it is a handy tool to have makes it a bit easier to adjust the valves. I have not adjusted my carb at all mainly because I live at high altitude. so adding the exhaust probably helped. I have a video in the plans about tuning
Thanks, Wes. I followed your instructions for changing my oil and just checked my valves at 601 miles. I did not have to adjust as the intake and the exhaust valves were within spec at the maximum clearance, plus I was worried if I adjusted anything it would turn out wrong. One thing I noticed is that the shaft had variable resistance while rotating and just when I was about to get to top dead center it would suddenly rotate faster on its own (it felt like something dropped a bit). The only way I could get top dead center was to rotate clockwise for a couple degrees after it rotated counterclockwise on its own quickly. You mentioned that it was harder to rotate with the spark plug in, but I didn't take the spark plug out. Wonder if that is a unique feature of my TW which is a 2021. Also, I believe my valve cover bolts were overtorqued as they were hard to loosen and when tightening to spec (difficult with the clearance there), they were no where near as tight as when I started. I did not loosen the valve locknut but wonder if that is overtorqued as well. You do such a great job with these videos. I hope you keep them up.
Hey, your welcome. Glad the vids were helpful. Nice, same with mine, didn’t have to adjust at 600 either, make sure to check again at the next interval. Thats normal, your just fighting the compression.
@@TDubsKid Thanks, definitely felt weird trying to get to top dead center and had to rotate multiple times before I could be sure I was in the right place. I couldn't find a video of replacing the brake rotor or pads on the TDub by you. Would you post a video for those like me with no mechanical experience? Thanks
@@DianneGerrity yeah that's normal. takes a few tries to get it sometimes. yeah better to not make the cover bolts as tight. did you see my update on those torque specs? I woun't worry about the tappet nut if you didn't loosen it. that one is extremly important to torue to spec. I will once I need to replace them. I have over 17,000 miles with original brake parts. they last a very long time unless you do tons of heavy braking for some reason
@@TDubsKid I did see the updated torque spec for the valve covers, thanks. Have a feeling I won't be needing to change out the brakes for a while as I am not an aggressive driver at all. Well, maybe, I let my son take the bike and he and his friends rode it....
I was told by a bike mechanic that the first sign of needing a valve adjustment is hard starting in other works the starter turning engine over a lot longer to start running. Is that true? my bike has 6600 miles and dont know if it need a valve adjustment. Starts very quick so think I'm ok for now? Thanks for all your help! It's a 2012.
not necessarily but possibly. try giving the fuel tank a good slosh before opening the fuel valve. I would just check them to make sure they are at spec
Heh, unfortunately I found out the hard way to make sure I properly torque those tappet jam nuts, I was pretty far from home in the nastiest place of the day and mine finally let loose, luckily I could barely limp it out to road so my brother could get to me in his truck, information hard earned there, it was a real wrestling match to get back out of that swamp with the bike barely capable of running.
Great video. I'm buying a bike soon and after months of researching I'm stuck on the tw200 and the crf250l. Did you consider the 250l at any point and if so what made you go tdub? I need help. Lom I cant decide from the 2. I'm afraid I might regret it if I go with one over the other. I'm 5'8" but with some what short legs and arms. Your opinion will lb be highly appreciated. Thank you very much.
Great videos! I have two parts questions. Looks like you have an aftermarket muffler. Is there one you recommend and why? Second, do you have a link for the valve cover o rings/gaskets? I’m having trouble finding them. Thanks!
put in a full tank of premium fuel with fuel stabilizer. open the fuel valve, start it up, let it run for a little bit then shut off the fuel valve and let the engine run till it stops. turn off bike and store.
hey thanks! and sure I have these ones amzn.to/2vmOW8y and got these u clamps separately (since they don't come with them) amzn.to/2xt7lhy to be honest though they were slighly a pain to fit since I had to grind down one of the u clamps since that small bar across the top gets in the way. they are awesome though and have really stood the test of time with lots of abuse. they also have this style that comes with a different type of clamp amzn.to/2wk4p6Q not sure how well it will fit for sure but it might. yo just got back from a test ride after adjusting the valves. it was good!! thank so much.!!!!!! when i get paid ill hit up your patreon saved me alot of money and you taught me how to fix the bike confidently. thanks!!!!!
awesome! glad to hear it went well, no problem! I don't have a patreon but I really appreciate that. glad to hear the video was helpful! 😃
You are so awesome. Just bought a 2021 TW200 watching all your vehicles…Keep up the great work!!!
thanks so much! glad to hear, have fun on it! ill keep the videos coming
Very well done. Usually I get board waiting for the actual video to start and just as board wishing they would speak faster and get to the point. This was spot on!
thank you! glad you didn't get bored, I try to make them as short as possible but with as much information as possible haha
VERY well done! Explained in a way that no one should be into intimidated to perform this necessary maintenance!
hey thanks! hopefully many tdub owners will benefit from this video :)
TDubsKid many could benefit.....not just TW owners. Same process for most thumpers. Same as my DR except for different wrench sizes.
well that's good to hear, as long as it doesn't use shims haha
Thanks for creating this video. Checked my valves today using this video and it went very smoothly.
No problem! Glad it helped
Thanks again for another great video! I don't know what we'd do without them!
No problem! Glad they are helpful 😀
Excellent video. Information will help a lot of people understand how to do this maintenance task on any single-piston thumper motorcycle
Thanks glad to help! As long as they use the right measurements for the different engine
Okay haven't even got to the part I needed to know yet but such production value in a valve adjustment video. Kudos!
thank you sir! I hope it was helpful :)
When you get to the point you need to rebuild your top end, I know people would appreciate a video on that. I am having a heck of a time trying to replace my valves.
I will indeed make a video on it, hopefully not for a while still haha. hope you can get it squared away.
@@TDubsKid it's definitely a good lesson for people to make sure to do proper maintenance. Unfortunately like my bike if you buy used you can be gambling a bit. Oh well, it is a learning experience.
Yeah what happened to it? Burned valves or mushroomed out valve top?
@@TDubsKid I had a valve stem snap. When I first got the bike I adjusted the valves and the intake was way out of spec. Guess which one broke? Lol
the valve stem itself snapped?? or the tappet?
Thanks for the great video. I would like to point out something, though. In the video description you list electric start as a feature that was added on the later TWs. In fact, every TW200 ever built came with electric start. The first 13 years of production had both kick and electric.
no problem! good to know about that, I was not aware. wish they had always kept the kick
@@TDubsKid yeah, me too. The good thing is that you can retrofit the kicker even on the new ones.
Your vids are thorough and outstanding in ALL aspects! THANKS for taking the time to make and share them. This is greatly appreciated and GREAT ATTENTION TO DETAIL!!!
Hey I appreciate that. You're very welcome!
Hell, I'd be happy if I could keep my toolbox organized like that ! Good job T-D-K !
haha ill admit I have tool ocd. thanks!
great video man, thanks for the excellent camera work and detailed info without being overly talkative..... cheers !
No problem glad you enjoyed the video!
No problem, glad you found it useful! Nice haha, should for sure be similar, yeah that little adjuster tool really helps
As well as the travel videos those are pretty cool xD.
hey sorry that happened. are you sure the piston was on the right stroke when checking the valves? hopefully it worked out for you
thank you, glad you enjoy them
I'll tackle it, since you made it look easy and understandable - thanks!
Good, best of luck take your time
Thanks for the vid! valves were out of spec and runs much cleaner with more power.
No problem! I can sure make a difference when I adjust mine as well
Excellent video.
Nice that works too! Yeah always double check it once tightened down. Good idea! Should be good for a long time now
Thanks for the video. I just finished valve adjustment. You made it easy. Thanks again.
nice! glad to be of help
Thanks Kid, I just adjusted my valves for the first time using your video. Very well done!
Glad it helped! thanks
Hey tdubs! I don’t have a tw200 but I’ve been subbed for a while now and love your videos. I just had a customer drop off a tw200 for a valve adjustment (and a long list of other stuff) and I’m so glad I knew who to search for. Thanks for your technical videos! And the other ones too.
hey cool to hear, glad the video was helpful. no problem
Awesome video, makes much less afraid to tackle this job on my Zongshen Sierra/ZS 200 GY-2. The engine and a lot of other parts are practically identical, and most TW200 procedures translate well to it!
thank you! glad to hear. I guy near where I live has one of those, very interesting
Can make a tappet adjuster out of a square headed deck screw, an electrical twist cap and some jb weld. Works as well as anything you can buy.
that would work too if you have some laying around!
Gotta be ready for that apocalypse.
haha true that!
And according to Google a Coca-Cola can is 0.097 millimeter or
0.00382 inch in case a zombie eats your feller guages.
haha that's awesome!!!
Great Video! Again, I really appreciate how in depth you go on the procedures! Very precise step by step how to!
hey thank you! Glad it was helpful! stay safe 😀
Thank for this very usefull HowTo, checked my valves, but did not need to re-adjust as they were still within specs.
hey no problem! and nice, my valves were good as well the first time I checked them
Brilliant ! You're the 'TW200 Man' ! Cheers
thanks! 😀
Good job on the video. I like the way you described a 4 stroke engine cycle.
I had to get a bigger tank. I was always having to put gas in my bike
thanks! yeah I though it would be good to explain what is going on for people who are new to how engines work. gottcha, yeah a bigger tank would be nice but I love the look of the stock one
im coming across this my self what did you upgrade your tank to???
Thanks! Just checked my new used 95. Was only .001 out of spec on the exhaust! This vid helped a ton! Keep if up!
no problem! glad to hear it was helpful. ride on 😃
Thanks TDubs, your content has been super helpful
no problem!glad to hear :)
Thanks for this video. I wouldn't have done this without it! She's purring like a kitten now!
no problem! glad it was helpful
Hey, you have made an awesome video, all inclusive, understandable, simple. Our circle of riding friends has about 10 tdubs. Thank you
hey glad the vide was useful. Ride safe Tdubbers 😀
Nice job will follow your process hopefully it will help with my 2000 TW 200 (with a new OEM carb) that continues to backfire and miss.
no problem. best to check the valves. also check for vacuum leaks. that can cause huge air fuel issues
I don't own any bike and this was still very interesting!
interesting, glad to hear! you must like mechanical stuff
Btw, I started watching your videos about a week or so ago and I binge watch more and more . You have quite an uplifting attitude and editing skills. The talking rocks in the background is a great touch!
outstanding tutorial! Gave me the push/confidence to do this adjustment myself. Hope all the bike mechanics don't put a hit out on you! ;)
Thanks
thanks glad it was helpful, haha I hope not. no problem!
You are a wealth of information. Thank you.
You are very welcome!
Excellent video, not a word in Russian, but everything is very clear, thank you
Hey thanks! Glad the video was still helpful
You killed it as always!! Great job man....hope the knee is feeling better!
hey thanks man!
Excellent video. One of the best I've seen. Good work.
hey thanks! glad it was helpful :)
Fantastic, as always. You are seriously a TW public service. I hope you are making lots of cash!🤣 happy riding!
thanks! glad to help! hopefully people are able to learn some great skill from the videos
Thanks for making these videos. I just bought a 2018 TDub and love it.
hey no problem! ill keep making how too videos for sure! good to hear your enjoying your new tw200! ride on :)
@@TDubsKid Truth is, your videos sealed the deal for my purchase!
awesome to hear, ride safe my friend, let know if you have any questions
Great video. Crystal clear instructions. Thanks.
Thanks glad it was easy to follow
Your channel is AWESOME!
Thanks!!
Great work m8. Keep it up! You deserve more subscribers
hey thanks! ill keep them coming, much appreciated, the nice thing about not having too many subscribers is I get to respond to all the comments 😃
Your videos are very nicely done.
thanks! hope they are helpful
Very useful thanks 👍 I'll check tomorrow my old tw200 😅😅
Glad to help!
Hi Tdubskid! Greetings from Spain! I have a 2009 TW200 and find videos very useful and encouraging. Congratulations! I suggest a video on carburetor cleaning, adjustment and maintenance. You may have done it and I missed it. In that case, sorry in advance. Best regards
hey there! thanks, I have not done one yet, since my engine runs really good still, I'm sure I will someday
@@TDubsKid Thanks! The engine of my TW seems to run fine, bit CO² emissions are todo high. Adjustment of carburetor is essential to avoid high emissions, but probably the most technical issue on a TW200. Looking fordward ti tour video on that! Thanks again and best regards
half way there on adjusting valves had to stop due the lack of light, thanks again for the video. i have a 2003 and i have a small can looking component on the right side of the bike that leads from fuel to it to carb
wht is?
nice! no harm in waiting till the morning to finish haha no problem. that just takes gas fumes from the tank and burns them in the engine instead of venting it to the air. only tw's originally sold in California have it for emissions
Thanks, great video, did not think it was that easy!
no problem, thanks! It is super easy on these bikes, sorta hard when you first do it but after that its cake
Great video mate. Cheers from NZ.
thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
I’m buying a 1996 tw200 with only 2k miles it also upgraded with a lot of aftermarket parts
very nice! should be sweet
Specs at 6.50 Great guy !
also in the description, thanks!
Yeah they definitely need to be torqued down to spec, they need to be tighter rhan one would think. Glad you made it out though
Hey TDubz I love the videos! Not sure if your gonna see this but what do you use to clean the engine? I saw something coming out of a can. Thanks!
hey glad to hear! I have been using engine cleaner/degreaser you get at the auto parts store 😀👍
Thank you very much.
thank you! I didn't consider the crf250 much I'm pretty short so wanted a low seat height, maybe try sitting on them at the dealer, that could help
You're awesome man!
thanks! glad the vid was helpful :)
Hey, thanks for the upload. Helped me out heaps.
no problem glad it was helpful!
Great vids man, love your voice too, good narration
thank you! 😃
Great videos! I have two parts questions. Looks like you have an aftermarket muffler. Is there one you recommend and why? Second, do you have a link for the valve cover o rings/gaskets? I’m having trouble finding them. Thanks!
Hey dude, love the videos. I'm about to undertake my first valve change for my mx bike, any advice?
Hey glad you enjoy them, I would say make sure to follow the instructions for the bike you doing it on and tripple check
Appreciate it and appreciate you sharing your adventures 👍
Thanks for the video, you do a great job. You’re pretty darn handy, I’m just curious what do you do for a living
no problem, thanks! I'm an auto tech
Thanks kid for a great video. Very helpful and to the point. Keep the good work.
Hey no problem! Thanks, I’ll keep them coming
You make some damn fine videos boy
why thank you!
Thanks for the video ! Great job .
No problem! Thanks for watching!
I was curious if you know how to winterize/ drain the carburetor on the 2021 TW200??
Thank you
put in a full tank of premium fuel with fuel stabilizer. open the fuel valve, start it up, let it run for a little bit then shut off the fuel valve and let the engine run till it stops. turn off bike and store.
Done it - worked out quite nice. Thanks.
Great to hear!
Thanks for the valve adjust vid...
No problem!
Hey great vid! Do you think you could put a link to the hand brush guards you have on your handles? They look really good with your bike. Thanks
hey thanks! and sure I have these ones amzn.to/2vmOW8y and got these u clamps separately (since they don't come with them) amzn.to/2xt7lhy to be honest though they were slighly a pain to fit since I had to grind down one of the u clamps since that small bar across the top gets in the way. they are awesome though and have really stood the test of time with lots of abuse. they also have this style that comes with a different type of clamp amzn.to/2wk4p6Q not sure how well it will fit for sure but it might. I also put these mirror mirrors on on my handguards amzn.to/2wdARcy here is the video th-cam.com/video/bgQiaDbMQG4/w-d-xo.html also here is the video more on the handguards th-cam.com/video/A83PKHxoffY/w-d-xo.html
if I ever get new handguard I'm going to get some from here www.highwaydirtbikes.com/ since they have better folding mirrors my friend had some on his wr250 and loved them, they are a bit more pricey though
hope this helps!
Excellent video! Thanks!
thanks for watching!
Can you please post a video of how it should sound after? I hear a little bit of clattering after. Is this normal?
I have a video of how my engine sounds, th-cam.com/video/7POMSyv-MyI/w-d-xo.html if the valves are good and you have top end oil flow, I wouldn't worry about it
Great video! I’m having trouble kick starting the bike... would the valve clearance being too much effect that?
I guess its possible if the valves are out of spec, best to check them. Your valves can also be damaged if there is not enough clearance
@@TDubsKid I haven’t measured the clearance, but turning over the crank, seems like there’s a good 0.5mm or more gap...
use a feeler gauge to know for sure
