  • Starter Motor Problem and Replacement in Honda Accord 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017. Video shows engine starter problems of Honda Accord, 4 cylinder, automatic transmission, and then step by step guide on how to replace starter motor.
    SIGNS OF A STARTER GOING BAD / STARTER FAILURE:
    When starter motor going bad and we try to start the vehicle there is full power in battery but starting motor (cranking motor) will have no crank at all: lights on instrument panel/ dash will stay steady (not flicker), headlights will have full power - won't dim or flicker.... car starter motor will simply not even try to start the vehicle. When this happens, turn the car key to off and then on and try to restart. After a few tries it will start. Starter solenoid ability degrades over time so problem will get worse and may eventually leave you stranded.
    SEE: • Signs Your Honda Start...
    WHY THIS IS NOT ALTERNATOR PROBLEM:
    When issue is with alternator (charging system) it would not charge the battery and as a result you will have battery problems. See: • How To Test Alternator...
    BATTERY PROBLEM Vs. STARTER PROBLEM:
    When issue is with battery, the vehicle doesn't have enough power to start the vehicle. When we try to start, the lights on the dash / instrument panel / gauges will flicker, if we switch-on the headlights they will be dim (low lit) and if we try to start with headlights on, they will flicker while vehicle is trying to start, and we can hear starter trying to start vehicle.
    IF YOU ARE STRANDED DUE TO STARTER PROBLEM:
    * Lift vehicle on scissor/jack on the driver side wheel
    * Take spare wheel from trunk, place under driver wheel
    * Take metal wrench meant for opening wheel lug nuts
    * Take floor mat from car, place under vehicle engine
    * Lay down on the floor mat under car engine
    * Find starter under vehicle, bang on it with wrench
    * Do this a few times and then start vehicle
    * When vehicle starts, do not turn it off!
    BAD STARTER REPLACEMENT:
    Starter Failure: cost to replace bad starter motor at Honda dealer service shop is about $850! ($550 for starter cost + $200 labor + tax etc) We can save by buying OEM Honda accord starter motor online and install it ourselves - its only 2 bolts and 2 wires.
    STARTER BUYING CHOICES:
    * New OEM Honda starter motor: 31200-5A2-A52
    * ReManufactured OEM Honda: 06312-5A2-506RM
    * New Non-OEM starter from local parts store
    * Used OEM Honda starter rebuilt by other vendors
    * Used low mile OEM Honda starter - from ebay
    PARTS NEEDED:
    * New OEM Honda starter, amzn.to/36gcih6
    * New aftermarket starter, amzn.to/3vzwvxH
    OR, used low mile OEM Honda starter from ebay
    TOOLS & SUPPLIES:
    * Home & Auto Tool set, amzn.to/39VPfbG
    Will use: 14mm socket - for starter bolts
    12mm socket - for wire nut
    10mm socket - to disconnect battery
    + Ratchet, adapter, extension
    * Jack Stands (3-Ton), amzn.to/2Yo5Tvz
    * work light w/ magnet, amzn.to/3vGguWp
    * Flat cardboard box to lay on while under vehicle
    * Dishwasher detergent to clean dirty hands
    HOW TO REPLACE THE STARTER:
    Due to snug location of starter its wire connectors and bolts are not visible easily and most of the work has to be done by feeling the connectors and bolts by fingers! Therefore, please review video closely and note the steps below:
    TO REMOVE OLD STARTER:
    1) Put jack stands under front end of the car
    2) Disconnect battery terminals, use 10mm socket
    3) Lay down under vehicle and power-on work light
    4) Disconnect starter wire harness from starter body
    5) Wire Connector on Top: press on top-front, pull connector away from starter to disconnect
    6) Wire Connector on back: pull-up rubber boot, loosen & remove 12mm nut
    7) Locate upper 14mm bolt, loosen w/ ratchet & remove
    8) Locate lower 14mm bolt, loosen & remove
    9) Starter will be loose by now, wiggle and remove
    TO INSTALL NEW STARTER
    Installation is the reverse of above steps.
    * Be gentle in tightening nut in step (6) above
    * If 14mm bolt (step 7-8) is tight, local repair shop can loosen w/ their power tools
    TIME REQUIRED:
    * less than an hour

    good job finding a better deal on eBay, people who sell on ebay for a living are usually pretty honest about their product. I had similar starting issues this morning but in my case it was the battery. Your video was very informative helping me find my problem and I'm sure it will serve as a great guide when it comes time to change the starter. 👍🏼

      Thanks so much for the nice comment and glad you found my video helpful to diagnose the problem. Glad it was only the battery! Most of my vehicle batteries fail either this time of year or in Dec, LOL. I didn't know this model of Accord has problem with starter motor until started to fail on me. The only good thing about starter failure is that it gets worse over a few weeks so we get a chance to order a replacement. Batteries just go kaput overnight, lol. Thanks again for the nice comment. Best wishes!

    I used to drive a 2012 civic, the starter was pain in the rear to get out. Now my 2016 accord just crossed 100K, was bored and thought I should take a look as to how to replace it. Glad to see the engineers give us more room to work within the newer models and a very informative video. Thank you!

    • @FlyBeee
      @FlyBeee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for liking my video! While replacing the starter I thought there wasn't enough room to work with so it is good to know that in comparison Accord actually has more room! How is your 2016 Accord doing? Any transmission or oil burn issue?

    • @captsumtingwong
      @captsumtingwong 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FlyBeee It's so neat to see you replying to a video that was uploaded about 2 years ago! Yea man, all the videos on youtube were telling me to take off the front passenger wheel and fish the starter out. I tried but it didn't work, took it over to my gf at the time, her dad was a mechanic and he took it out through the driveshaft like it wasn't anything. I stared at him for like a solid 5 min, was like how tf?!?!?!? ( I was too stunned to speak) I've been struggling to get that damn thing out for the past 2 hrs. But we joked about it after.
      Anyway, sorry I got off the topic, but honestly, I only had it for about 2 - 3 months and put on 15K+ miles (I travel frequently for work) so far, everything seems to be in great condition, I have a manual transmission, the clutch seems to be pretty solid, no slips. I actually have not experienced any oil consumption in this 2.4L engine. However, surprisingly I did have a slight oil consumption in the Civic 1.8L engine, maybe it'd consume about 1 - 1.5 quarts every 7,500 miles, which that's usually when I change the oil. Very interesting!

    • @FlyBeee
      @FlyBeee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@captsumtingwong You are welcome! I make videos to help others in the same situation so try my best to answer the questions I receive. Thanks for the compliment :) The story about your then gf's dad is so impressive! That's a pro move right there! The manual transmissions are solid like rock are fun to drive. Change the transmission fluid on schedule and engine oil every 3500 -4K miles and your Accord should last you a long time. 7500 mile interval is too long. All kept my past Honda Acuras for at least 200K miles so lets see how long this 2013 Accord lasts! :) Best wishes!

  • @bol1family

    Thanks for the great video! The OEM starter lasted 160K miles which isn't too bad. It was acting up and I just replaced it after it totally failed and I had to have the car towed home. Took about two hours to replace. It probably would have taken about 30 minutes if there was more space to get my hands and tools in position. I used an aftermarket starter from Amazon. I hope it lasts a while!

    • @FlyBeee
      @FlyBeee  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are welcome, I am glad my video helped. Totally agreed on lack of space around starter.. it causes the most delays because otherwise it's just two bolts and a wiring harness to disconnect/reconnect. The good news is your OEM starter lasted for good 160K miles! thats awesome

      @@FlyBeee It has 53,000. And it has stoped doing it recently. You think it’s the starter relay?

    • @FlyBeee
      @FlyBeee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JUDGEME5150 53K miles are fairly low. It may be Starter relay which will be in fuse box inside in engine area under the hood. Locate the relay and next time it gives you problem just replace the relay with a good one to see if that fixes the issue. Don't buy the relay just yet but definitely do the research on best place to buy it, or even the starter. In my case relay wasn't the issue and even starter problem was barely noticeable at first - when it happened for the first time car took a few tries to start and then next couple weeks it started fine, then it would take a few tries to start.... and the frequency of issue increased in about 3000 miles. I think you are already ahead of the curve by using this time to research the issue and looking at possible options. If you get a chance please review the text in the description of video. I have detailed steps on how to change starter - in case it comes to that for your Accord. Best of luck!

      So on my car i would have to try and turn it on a couple time at least 5 times before it would start and every time I’d hear a clicking noise could it be the starter?

    • @FlyBeee
      @FlyBeee  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NA-se9fr May be just a battery issue. Please check under the hood to see if there is any white/blue corrosion deposit on battery especially on the red terminal. That red rubber cap lifts up from its open end. If there are deposits, pour any soda can on it (especially Coke) and it will clear the corrosion. Also check if the battery wires fit tight on battery. Tighten as needed. Let me know the outcome. Thanks

    Got my starter battery and alternator tested and they claim it’s the alternator. I don’t have a battery light and still have all the lights on the dash coming on when I try to start my car. Replaced the battery and it worked for a good week or so now when I try to start the car the starter either engages then cuts out halfway through or dosent engage and I have to turn to the On/Off position to get it to crank once or twice. Thoughts ?

    Just here to share my experience with my 2014 Honda Accord sport manual 4 cyl. I tried a reconstructed duralast starter from AutoZone didn't work. My dad ordered me a Denso from the shop he works at, didn't work. I finally had luck purchasing one from Honda directly. It costed me $483.95 after getting $75 back for returning to OEM one and getting a 10% discount. I tried to save money by not having to go to Honda but could not get any to work. At least i saved some money by having my pops help me install it.

      Thank you so much for sharing your experience and the details you have included, it will help others looking to replace their starter! I have had several Honda vehicles over the yeras and in my experience these do best with Honda OEM parts (and fluids) so I am also not a huge fan of aftermarket either. @Fly Bee Thanks for the great video. I have 2014 LX and having starter issue I think. Issue started a few weeks ago that there are times it won't start right away. It tried to start but hearing some whining sounds and if i hold for a few more seconds it cranked and turned over, but sometimes it doesn't and remove the key and tried a few more times and it started. Do you think it may be related to starter going bad? I have around 91K on my vehicle. By the way how's your starter going so far? Thanks again

    • @FlyBeee
      @FlyBeee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In starter issue the car won't turn at all - like I show in the video. If starter turns but you hear whining noise it may be bad battery - especially if your dashboard lights flicker when you start the car. Batteries go bad in extreme weather hot/cold so cold weather may be causing your battery to go bad. My replacement starter is going well even after 20K miles and no issues!

    Hey I have a 2017 Honda Accord sport , we were recently hit by hurricane ida and water has gotten up to my floors. Since then my car has been running however, it has cut off twice. The first time I was sitting with my key in the car when the lights started going crazy. I got a jump , got my battery and alternator tested after which was they are both good. My car has been running since then (3 weeks ago)
    Yesterday I was sitting in my car when it cut off again. I hear this noise before it shuts off short of like the sound of the a light flick. I waited 30 minutes and it turned back on again.
    Could it be the starter ?

    • @FlyBeee
      @FlyBeee  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am glad you all survived hurricane Ida! whew! About the car issue, the starter and alternator both are located higher than vehicle's floor so wouldn't be affected by water unless water splashed really higher up - and you've got them checked so glad they are doing okay. The car's immobilizer system is connected to battery and any water may trigger power cut-off so I would double-check that first to make sure battery area, connectors and base tray are fully dry. Best of luck!

    Just wondering how did that starter hold up, is it still starting up. It seems that on my 2015 accord the starter is my main issue, it’s been replaced 3 times, pretty sad huh, i under I used aftermarket parts but the original one coming from the factory went out at 40,000, that’s not right, I remember when Honda use to make dependable and solid parts, unlike now they compromise quality for profit. In starter issues there is full power in the battery (lights won't dim or flicker) it is just that starter would not crank at all.

      Thanks so much for the info on current dealership cost. Really appreciate it. How many miles on the odometer when you first experienced starter problems? Thanks

      Thanks. How long did it take for the problem to get worse? What was the mileage when you had the starter replaced?

      @@FlyBeee took about 3 months for my starter to finally really give me issues about to replace mine within the next couple days

    Happened to mine on a 15 accord after I plugged in progressive safe driver device. Would only click and start sometimes. Only 55K miles.
    Undid the progressive device and replaced the starter. So far so good.

      Thanks for sharing your experience. Can't believe the Progressive device caused the issue, Good decision on not using that tracker! Best wishes

      @@FlyBeee I don't think so either. I always had issues with the aftermarket remote starter. I disconnected that and took out the insurance tracker.
      I'm assuming those Honda models were all having shorter shelf life's of their starters.

      @@37HD the starter on the newer Accords and CRVs seem to have shorter life spans vs the older model Hondas that never had starter issues , at least not in the many Hondas I personally owned. The Honda quality is slipping away!
