Chris , I so enjoy your videos because, they are clear and too the point, no added talk, no cursing, no music. Thank you so much for your help. I'm 70 and have been fixing my grandson's car with your help.
One tip: DO NOT turn in your old starter (or any other part) for the core charge when you pick up the new part. Wait until a week or more after you've successfully installed and used the replacement. Occasionally the store parts will ALL be junk (or wrong) and they won't have another part option and you will never get your old part back from them. Keeping your old core allows you to return the junk parts and go to a completely different supplier. I've learned that one the hard way a few times.
Chris that knocking trick saved me the cost of a tow truck and my wife's car being left for the night in an underground parking lot. Thank you. Been a loyal follower for a very long time.
I just got a 2001 Ford Ranger from my friend's family after it sat for 4 years and have been slowly working on fixing all the little issues it has. It's in surprisingly great condition even after 273k miles, and only has small things here and there, worst issue is that the front crankshaft seal is slightly cracked. Since I started driving it, I've had a few moments where I would get a no crank/no start, and I watch so many videos talking about it and none were helpful. Finally, I decided to just buy a new starter, and not 15 minutes after I got home from Autozone, I found your video. Turns out the issue was the neutral safety switch, something I had not seen a single other video mention. I just got back from returning the starter I bought earlier and am glad to have that money back. Thank you so much Chris from 7 years ago, you saved me a lot of time and money. I'm 26 in a week and am very ignorant about vehicles, trying to learn as I go, and I will definitely be checking if you have a video on any issue I might have in the future.

Thanks, mate! You saved me having to take the car in to be looked at: previous battery failed and apparently corroded the negative terminal. It wasn't starting, so I checked the fuses and the battery, but no dice. I watched this video in the hopes it would give me an idea of what was wrong, and I ended up only having to remove the corrosion from the terminal clamps before it started up. Awesome video, as usual.

A regular joe at home will never know where to begin looking. Telling us to find where the oil pan/engine meets up with the transmission is where the starter will crank the fly wheel makes it easy to find the starter. Thanks a million.
when u actually have to fix ur car, u'll know it. Pain in the ass! Especially, rust, corrosion, extra torque at nuts and bolts, complexity of computers, diagnosis the problems, tools, safety first, double gaskets made by ur own mistake, ect. That's y people usually end up buying reliable cars rather than gimmicks and muscles. I've never seen any1 cant wait to FIX their cars lol. Vehicles arent Lego which u cant wait to put them together and then break them apart and build new ones.
Hey coming from India. I helped change my Friend's 2004 Ford Mondeo Ghia mk3's bad starter using your vid and his car starts right up. Pretty hard to find tools and silicone but we got it done. Awesome vid.
Chris, this video has been a great help! My brother and I have been watching your videos since the beginning, always admiring how much you know and teach us all on cars. Then today my brothers starter quit working in his 2001 Oldsmobile Alero. With your diagnosis check list, and how to step by step, we did the whole thing by our selves, saving us a ton of money instead of taking it to a garage to be fixed. Your how to videos are the best!
🔧🔩🏆 This is how you make a professional-looking DIY car repair video. The camera work was clear and close, the narration and steps-needed process were clear and direct, and there was no annoying rap or metal "music" blasting in the background. A sure sign of an amateur TH-cam DIY project poster is a shaky camera and crap "music" overwhelming the narration. Once again, well done, Chris! Thanks for sharing to help the home DIYer like me save money.
ChrisFix Hey Chris, I turn the key and my starter does absolutely nothing. I bought a brand new battery, had it tested and put in brand new battery cables. the starter still does nothing. Where exactly do I connect my voltmeter leads on the starter motor to know the power from my ignition switch has energized the starter solenoid and connected the battery power to the starter motor? What should I read if the starter is good? What should I read if the starter is bad?
Mr Obvious you would connect the positive to the lead on the sealinoid that connects to the battery and connect the negative to where you bolt the starter in or anywhere on the base of it. You need to check you relay too cuz it sounds like you aren’t getting power to it.
Instead of doing all that diagnostics, I would have better luck trying to get the Millennium Falcon's hyperdrive working while being chased by Imperials.
Great teaching! I'm hanging nine interior doors, and on the first one I tried a Ryobi jig. It didn't work out as well as I would have liked. After watching your video, I lined up my points to drill the face and side of the doors. Easy peasy. The jig goes in the trash. What I learned here stays in my head.
Crap! I was commenting on another video (about hanging doors in my home), and the video ended--and this ChrisFix video started. Apparently, the comment went to Chris' video. That never happened to me before. By the way, this starter video helped me change out the starter in my 1999 3.0 Ford Ranger.
warning for people doing this on ford trucks. this may apply to some to other vehicles as well. Some starters need a shim stack to be aligned properly, and with ford, the starters are slot drilled for at least one of the bolts on some of the trucks. while I do know how to do the alignment for these, i do not have the correct tools to properly do this and without the alignment tool, I have yet to get the starter to mesh perfectly without grinding. just be aware that this may be the case for some people, and if your starter grinds after installing, you may be forced to have a mechanic do the starter alignment for you. chris, if you have any suggestions on how to deal with this issue avoiding using special tools please let me know. your videos are always entertaining to watch. (current toyota and ase technitian student)
Comment your "starter stories" here. I know some Audi's need the engine lifted to get to the starter and the Cadillac NorthStar engine has the starter under the intake manifold! What a bad design! Chris thank you for the video, very helpful. Had to pick up my oldest niece after her trip and the car would not start. This has happened before and it was embarrassing. Thank god my wife was with me. Had my wife try to start the car while I taped on the starter. After a couple of try’s the car started. Thank you again brother
ive watched a few different videos and this one is by far the most detailed yet explained simply. im just beginning learning about cards and have a hard time knowing the best way to start troubleshooting problems. you are great at teaching and showing proper fixing techniques thank you!
Your video are extremely informative with simple language and clarity and without missing the critical topics. This video helped me greatly as I had almost taken out the alternator. The symptoms mentioned at 2:24 helped not to do so which I didn't find on any other. It was indeed the battery. Thanks and lot and keep up the good work.
Hyundai wanted 800 to replace my moms starter. We tied a rope to the car, pulled it right off their property, and replaced the starter on the side of the road in front of their sign for dirt cheap.
Thank you so much for going through all the diagnostics--I was ready to replace the starter and ended up just cleaning the battery terminals and changing the relay. All done in $25!! Sincerely-thanks for doing these videos. You’ve saved me a ton of money and really built my auto repair & maintenance confidence.
Starter went out on my truck right after my wife won an auction on some furniture. One catch, we had to pick it up ourselves before 6p. I'd never replaced a starter before in my life. Ran to the store, bought the part, watched a TH-cam video like this one (Unfortunately not this one)... and got the starter on around 5:15p. Got there just in time and wife thought I was a hero. Thanks for putting up helpful vids like this
To build a car you do not need to be handy like Chris, maschines do the job from A to Z and bts, if any to tighten, being done at the easiest moment in production, and you do not get dirty.
Man!! Im only 2 minutes in and I can TRULY appreciate that you sound very knowledgable, youre not stuttering every sentence and you are getting right to the point!!! Thank you!!! Other people are starting off petting their dog, can barely formulate a sentence, have extremely poor lighting and one guy had his cat sitting under the hood while he worked, talking to cat in baby talk... Sheesh!!!! LOL GREAT JOB. And like I said im only 2 minutes into your video. Cheers!
Thanks for the clear instructions on diagnosis, removal and replacement of the starter. You always do a well lit, stable and clear video of the repair leaving no questions as to how to do it. Thanks.
"My check engine light isn't coming on, now I gotta throw the whole car away!" ChrisFix: "Hey guys! ChrisFix here and today we're replacing a bad bulb"
since 2005 that ive been using youtube , this is the most explicit and well done video! straight to the point , no crap and nice video quality ! thanks for sharing ! greetings from Quebec!!!
Hey bro, you don’t have 5 million subs for no reason man. Your videos are the best I’ve seen on TH-cam tbh. I legit binge watch your videos like a Netflix show. You should definitely try to be a legit teacher at a auto school. Keep up the good work bro
Zac Sanders It's not that it's hard. I don't know what do about my cracked leather seats, stained floors, cigarette burns on the side of the passenger chair, or the scratches above the glove box. I want things looking decent.
As someone said before, auction cars generally have a good chance at being dirty enough for a video, but if you're really wanting some dirt and more ask a farmer for their truck/vehicle. If you know one and can use their truck chances are it will be dirty enough. Though there are some farmers who keep them clean. Will it matter to them if you clean it? No since it'll just get dirty again, but it would work for the video. As a detailer I can assure you that a farm vehicle or an auction vehicle are fairly good candidates for the video.
Thank you so much, Chris! I absolutely LOVE your videos and have been wantching from multiple accounts for YEARS! I still remember your "under the hood" cleaning video and LOVE how organized and easy to follow your videos are! Guys like you make guys like me confident to work on my car! THANK YOU! ❤
Thanks for the video. Good content, filming and personality. Remember that a lot of your viewers are super stressed out by the time they find you. Even if you don't fix their issue, your pleasant manner and confident tone helps them destress. Again, thanks for the video.
Thank you Chris, broke living off grid trying to do everything I can myself, I estimated you just saved me about $300. That money can now go towards things my son needs ❤️❤️ Ps Holden Rodeo 2001 4x4 diesel dual cab ( Isuzu) only has two locking bolts ( thank goodness as it was a total cow to get out )
@@saba7733 it happne when i was middle of no where just waiting for amaron to come and give me a jump start. that was a horrble mess, i had to wait for 6 hours on my tiago car and it was very hot there.
@@kunaldhar6713sounds like you and I need to aquire a good jump pack, mobile jump starter... I live very rural, isolated, and it isn't easy getting to, for help. Great video, eh?
I am so glad you made this video. Was able to diagnose and put in a new starter. Saved myself a ton of money. As a woman you made this very simple to follow. Thanks
Thank you for making a succinct video. All the information I've gathered from 10 other videos is right in one place. Waiting for the nut buster to do it's thing so I can remove my headers that act as a rib cage preventing removal of the starter on my Galant. Brilliant design.
This is a very well-made video! It didn't answer the question of where the bolts are on my starter, but I watched it all the way through anyway because it was educational, engaging, and pleasant to watch! I'm working on a VERY rusty old Ford Windstar and all the videos on here are either 1) not for my model year, or 2) are just some guy panning across their engine compartment repeatedly complaining about how his car didn't start and telling you at the end of a 10+ minute video that it was the starter ...no repairs made on the video at all. Thank you!
Closing in on 7M subscribers...good for you. You create great D.I.Y. how-to content that is like my drivers license...clean, clear, and valid. Keep it up.
Great job. I subbed cuz your the first person that took the time to truly diagnose and explain what to look for. Man this will help me to get my truck back on the road. Much appreciated and keep up the good work.
Hey Chris fix after watching many of your videos I think I’m ready to become a mechanic because ived fixed many cars with no training and people are quite impressed of my work they ask me a lot of questions and say I’m a good mechanic I say no I’m not a mechanic I just watch Chris fix videos on TH-cam. And they are shocked.....truly mind blowing what TH-cam brings. Thanks you again Chris you are really helpful
Before I don't know where and how to start whenever I have a problem with my car, but not anymore with Chris videos fixing my cars just got easier. I save time and money fixing my own cars and not to mention most shops they overcharged you and make you wait longer so they can charge you more. I thank God there is a ChrisFix. God bless you.
Thanks so much Chris! I changed out my starter on my Ford Ranger because it was cranking slow, and this made a HUGE difference. It now cranks over like its brand new! It took me about 5 hours and this was my first starter replacement just to give you an idea of the time it takes.
I know, I did it on mine too and it took a while. Well worth it though for the assurance that your car will start. Also, when buying a starter get a new one with a lifetime warranty; its worth it.
I’m having the same issue with my Acura TL. It started cranking slow but still turned on but I just want to make sure I don’t get stuck anywhere so I bought a new starter and waiting for it to arrive so I can replace this old one.
And people that seem to know how to work there lol. My experience with any auto store sucks and I wish I knew where all these awesome ones that everyone seems to have a great experience at.
Moiz, I literally, did an entire preventative maintenance overhaul of my car in quarantine by watching ChrisFix's videos. Installed brand new fog lights, and a rear spoiler. I cleaned and waxed my stock headlights with ChrisFix's toothpaste trick (minus the dental floss). Then I decided to replace the stock headlights with better aftermarket ones. I replaced my worn-out struts and sway bar links. Did a complete tune up, oil change, coolant flush, fuel system cleaning, break cleaning, Mass Air Flow sensor cleaning. Cleaned, compounded and polished, and waxed my car. Did a complete engine bay cleaning. The only thing I could not do by myself was install my new rims, which I had to take to an mechanic shop to do; cost me $20 per tire. Because of ChrisFix's videos, I'm actually planning on going back to school to earn my A.A.S. in automotive technology this coming fall semester, and have already signed up for classes.
Gotta Fix my exhaust system, cause the muffler fell off. i have no idea where it went or why im watching a video on Starters. Mise well Just put a new system in, gotta change the O2 Sensors as well.
I just recently replaced my own starter after watching this video multiple times. While being a noob, beginning to work on my car and understanding what it needs and how to maintain it, I've come to realize that these things are simple in nature but never easy for me. I spent around 45 minutes trying to loosen 1 bolt holding in my starter and I was cursing and almost in tears, ready to throw up. I walked to an Autozone for guidance. Luckily a nice man in line offered to come take a look at it. Within a couple of minutes he got the bolt out. I was almost there. I put in the work and research but it's always one bolt or clippy thing holding something in and making me regret my decisions. Anywho, it's a learning experience and in the end, I saved money. Went with a reman Denso starter. Hope it lasts a while.. I somewhat did it lol.
I just bought a car for $150 no crank no start. Here I come to your channel like I have been for the past 5 years. Thanks for the videos big fan here. Get things done when I look at your videos.
Clear and comprehensive of everything to check for before replacing the starter! In my "special" case with Ford Econ-150 van, thought was the starter. But before removing, I checked and found the voltage for the signal wire was intermittent to the starter solenoid. Turned out my 1995 Ford Econ-150 van has another solenoid (mounted at front of car) to relay the signal to the starter's solenoid and it was faulty. Fixed by replacing the $30 part. The reason for the 2nd solenoid was because back in the old days to early 90's, Ford starter may not have solenoid included as part of the starter as in today's car. And the 1995 van's 2nd (pre-)solenoid would allow installing the starter alone.
Except Bill Nye is a fraud and a phony. Doogie Howser is just as credible with medicine as Bill Nye is with science. He's a children's TV show host and an actor. No more, no less.
Nick P You are correct sir. He's a mechanical engineer. They should be good at inventing and fixing mechanisms. They are absolutely not cutting edge scientists. Ask me how I know,I am one as well.
DUDE!!!! Its 2021!! Who's utilizing this man's very skilled and user friendly approach, spot on instructions, perfect amount of detail and sped through like a bat out of hell!! Im speechless thank you!!!!
This video gave me the confidence to change my own starter. It didn’t go as smoothly as it did for Chris but it’s done and I saved myself hundreds of dollars. Big thanks, Chris!
Hey Chris! The hammer tap saved me today when I was stranded on the road with my Civic EG6. None of the mechanics I reached out to suggested trying this. Instead, they all told me to have the car towed to their shop. At least I was able to park my car in a safe spot. Next up - it's time for a starter replacement! 😄
An alternative to checking the battery, relays, neutral switch, ignition barrel, fuses or using a hammer is to put the voltmeter directly onto the starter connections. If you get 12V there when you crank it but the starter won't turn, the starter is bad.
Chris Thank You for this channel. I learnt what to look for when buying a used car from you. I learnt how to change my oil and filters from you I have learnt so much stuff I haven’t come across yet from you. Thank you so much. I am Simba from Zimbabwe.
Hey Chris i love the videos! I didn't know anything about cars before i started watching your videos. I would love to see new videos on how to tune your car and make them go faster, for example turbos and stuff like that. Keep making those videos!
Excellent explanation and video! One of the best fix it videos I have ever seen. I learned much more then I expected or needed to diagnose my forklift starter. Not the same vehicle or components but the principal are basically the same. Thank you very much.
And yet again, it's Chris to the rescue. Just imagine if there was someone as reliable, conscientious and clear on the web for all our needs. Life would be too easy :) THANK YOU. Again.
I would just like to thank @ChrisFix for this video because without it I would still be stuck in a parking lot. I literally made the call and said "Bring the hammer and a creeper. I got this" and here I am now. Now I just need to fix it.
He meant the *OLD* starter motor for his truck (a 2001 Mazda B3000 V6 4x4), which went bad *BEFORE* getting the *NEW* one that we saw sitting on the passenger seat, not the other way around.

Just wasted 130 for an alternator for this same reason, car was still stalling after replacing and I had already turned in my core.
I usually got good results with a junkyard OEM unit. Even if it didn't work I can swap parts off my old one and make a good one out of the pair.
@@milescarter7803 how much does it cost at the junkyard?

the big auto companies probably hate that; planned obsolescence is part of their respective business models... but not the parts suppliers!
Yes like buying expensive video games. Lol

okay, it's not only action. It's diagnose, do and finally check. This is what a decent tutorial video look like. Well done!

when u actually have to fix ur car, u'll know it.
That is awesome! Im glad the video was helpful and nice work guys!!!
I wonder how many millions of dollars you've helped people save with these videos. Great job with these and keep them coming!
I'm sure everyone has saved a ton of money! And thanks!
Think how much you could save by just putting new $2 carbon brushes back in your old starter.
ChrisFix Hey Chris, my car starter solenoid has an “R” terminal how does that work?
Mr Obvious you would connect the positive to the lead on the sealinoid that connects to the battery and connect the negative to where you bolt the starter in or anywhere on the base of it. You need to check you relay too cuz it sounds like you aren’t getting power to it.
I'm addicted to your videos! Makes me want to fix a car now lol

Thank god my wife was with me. Had my wife try to start the car while I taped on the starter. After a couple of try’s the car started. Thank you again brother
Awesome! Be sure to replace the starter ASAP
I know this video is 7 years old but I have always enjoyed how simple these videos are. Please keep doing this when you can. You are a hero. 😊
ive watched a few different videos and this one is by far the most detailed yet explained simply. im just beginning learning about cards and have a hard time knowing the best way to start troubleshooting problems. you are great at teaching and showing proper fixing techniques thank you!
Thanks! I do my best to plan, film, and edit my videos so they cover as much as possible in as little time as possible.

Thanks for putting up helpful vids like this
I'm glad you were still able to get it done!
Chris Fix, since you can fix and replace pretty much any/every thing on a car, why not just do a video called, "How to Build a Car".
Because you can't do that with common hand tools, duh
@@LoganDark4357 He was joking, duh
Blob BLOB woooosh
To build a car you do not need to be handy like Chris, maschines do the job from A to Z and bts, if any to tighten, being done at the easiest moment in production, and you do not get dirty.
You just can't joke on TH-cam DIY videos without morons putting their comments in
Man!! Im only 2 minutes in and I can TRULY appreciate that you sound very knowledgable, youre not stuttering every sentence and you are getting right to the point!!! Thank you!!! Can you do a super clean interior video? I'd really love one especially after buying my used car.
That is a good idea! I need to find a car with a dirty interior to clean first!
Blue Idho how hard is it to clean an interior 😂😂😂
Blue Idho wat car was it?

This is a very well-made video! It didn't answer the question of where the bolts are on my starter, but I watched it all the way through anyway because it was educational, engaging, and pleasant to watch! I'm working on a VERY rusty old Ford Windstar and all the videos on here are either 1) not for my model year, or 2) are just some guy panning across their engine compartment repeatedly complaining about how his car didn't start and telling you at the end of a 10+ minute video that it was the starter ...no repairs made on the video at all. Thank you!
Closing in on 7M subscribers...good for you.

People don't realize that even if a starter is still working, it could still be bad and be cranking really slow and you don't even realize it.
I’m having the same issue with my Acura TL. It started cranking slow but still turned on but I just want to make sure I don’t get stuck anywhere so I bought a new starter and waiting for it to arrive so I can replace this old one.

@@Dontez82 same bro he saved me a ton of money too!

And the 1995 van's 2nd (pre-)solenoid would allow installing the starter alone.

how about the stickers
This is called the clarkson mode
i wish he said that... like "or u can use the clarkson method, hit it with a hammer".
And Hammond is a broken pick axe.
An alternative to checking the battery, relays, neutral switch, ignition barrel, fuses or using a hammer is to put the voltmeter directly onto the starter connections. If you get 12V there when you crank it but the starter won't turn, the starter is bad.
That is a great idea!
hope Chris sees
JoeyRodz74 an make sure u get power at the aux port to or the starter switch can be bad if u dont while the key is turning over
Yeah bro, ruling out the weakest link sounds more reasonable.
That's great advice if you have someone to help you crank it while your under there testing it...
Then disconnect the positive wire from the starter and use a wire (or jumper cable) to momentarily hot wire the starter.
