Question for you... if there is not timing/crank sensor pick up on the flexplate or transmission.. why would moving the flexplate bolts be harmful more than one bolt hole? Just curious as if we were replacing and engine or transmission.. there is not "top dead center" markings on either part under there.

I have a 2013 Accord Exl V6. I bought it in 2018 with 40,000 miles and it has had this starter issue the entire time where it would just grind and not start until the 2nd or 3rd try most times. Thanks so much for this video! I have a ‘15 V6 and this start grinding issue started in ‘18. I’ve replace the starter twice and in 2020 I found out that it was the flex plate, went to Honda and told them the issue very descriptively and they didn’t even check and TSBs (they could have but maybe they just wanted to charge me more for the fix) They then quoted me $4000 for the labor and part, $1000 for flex plate (!) and $3000 for labor since they had to drop the tranny. I left.
Got another quote from Pep Boys for $2000, that was a lot better. Just didn’t feel right even paying that much. So three years later of intermittent starting I randomly googled Accord Flex plate and your video came up. I was super excited so today I went and jacked up the car and did exactly what you did from the TSB (only the rotation of the torque converter and flex plate, but not the gasket or starter since there’s a newish one in there)
Before this fix it would start sometimes 5 times in a row, then intermittently grind and not start, often it would take 5 or more start grinds/tries for it to fire up.
Since rotating the flex plate/torque converter I’ve started it 25 times without fail today (which is a big indicator that it worked). So overall this worked for me extremely well, thanks again! I’ll try and update over the next month or so.

    • @namfam
      @namfam ปีที่แล้ว

@@mujally24 In my opinion no, I didn’t change mine since I replaced it two years ago before rotating the flex plate/torque converter and it’s still starting like a champ weeks later without grinding once. I made sure to do the torque converter rotation and problem hasn't come back.... for anyone wondering how long term the solution can be. I could def see some wear on the TC gear thing when I did the repair, too. Problem initially started happening around 80 something K miles and I let it go for a looong time. Sometimes it would take 5-7 tries to start... which eventually (almost) killed my starter which was why I actually decided to do the repair.

I'm surprised this is just a TSB and not a recall, given the transmission is involved, and you can only do it once. Seems like that would be a design flaw IMHO?
Any idea how much the "next step" would cost (i.e. - replacing the torque convertor inside the transmission)? is that just a part replacement, or considered a transmission rebuild? like thousands of dollars probably?
Also I noticed it was only for V6 engines, but I have these exact same issues you are describing in my 4 Cyl. 2014 Honda Accord... :(

    • @HowtoAutomotive

Hi! I’ve been having problem with my starter (2015 honda accord v6). Starter was replaced last year using the newly design starter from Honda. My mechanic rotated the flywheel and use the next bolt per TSB as well but I am now having the same issue again after 1 year of installing the new starter. I brought the car to honda dealership per my mechanic’s advice to replace the flywheel since honda dealership has more man power but they could not recreate the grinding noise and therefore they could not diagnose the problem. Last year they replaced the battery because they thought that was the problem. Their next step was to replace the alternator, which I did not agree since my battery is not being depleted. To make the story short I could not convince them to concentrate on the starter system even after showing them the video I created while the problem was going on. It’s an intermittent problem, so chances are they will not run into the same problem /grinding noise if I bring it back to the dealership. It cost me $80 for them to start my car 15 times until they call it quits. The mechanic I normally go to have not mentioned anything to me that he used a shim. He thinks the solution is to replace the flywheel per TSB. He can do the work but not until September of this year. I don’t feel confident taking it to honda since I could not convince them to concentrate on the starter system. What do you think my next step should be before I replace the flywheel/torque converter? Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Question ...
If the starter is faulty in these newer Honda's (I own a 2016 Accord Lx 2.4l), is it true that the starter can sometimes mimic or act as if it's going to crank but then stalls out (kinda like it's out of gas start up), instead of the normal dead/faulty starter tell tells?
Asking because I was 90% sure my fuel pump crapped out on me finally but then saw something on here were the starter was bad and cranked it in the vid ... Totally sounded like what my accord is doing. I've bought the car new and the starter nor the fuel pump has been changed out so... I'm confused now 😂
Newer Honda parts are flipping heart attack expensive and I've already sank a good 3k into the accord since summer 2021 🤦‍♀️ rock auto is my friend for parts but still a fuel pump and starter are each 175 and up ... I just want back in my accord and out my sons cavalier from the 90s (great car for a starter car btw, if you find one thats not ran ragged).

The 2013 Honda Accord Ex starter is in a complete different place.
    It’s under the car.
I wish I had a way to get my car jacked up high enough.
Recently sometimes after several tries it crankes right up
Then other times I put my battery pack on the battery and wait a Moment then it cranks right up.
I’m due for a new battery.
But I think it’s a issue with the pushstarters / ignition switch
Possible the Starter. I had a friend get a new starter
He was tired of having to try cranking over and over.
That worked about 3 days before it started doing it again.
    Battery is good.
Honda should have recalled and fixed many of these issues long ago.
Imo They need to add a place to crank with the key or the push start like a few other vehicles offer.
It’s been a great car besides this damn push start issue so lease there’s that.
It’s barely just now at 100 thousand miles, So Hopefully will get another 80+ out of it.
I’m going back to Chevy Trucks.

Over 50 years working on Cars,Trucks, etc., all this TSB is doing is Costing the Customer $$$$$ ! I can see why Honda didn't want to EXPLAIN WHY! It's 2022 and they have lost money because of COVID-19 and have to RECOP the LOSSES! My 2013 Accord has the same issue, why would this start at 75K miles? Thanks for your Video, I not hitting on you about this, I I Honda wants a whopping $900,00 for a Starter and Install, I can just imagine what they want to remove the Flex Plate $2200.00 or more! That would be a total JOKE ! I love how they charge the CUSTOMER to EXPERIMENT!! If this doesn't work try this, and if that doesn't work try this! Seriously? People beware of this SCAM, I would like to see what would happen if he RE-INSTALLED your Original Starter?? Service Departments need those DOLLARS, and it these practices that keep them going! I wish he would've returned the ORIGINAL STARTER, because as you can see it WAS NOT the Starter, that someone paid $900.00 for! What a SCAM
