    Beautiful painting! One of the most useful and intelligent discussions on these miniatures that I have seen so far Leon! Very helpful! Looking forward to seeing the Kallistra minis when you get them. Very tempting...

      Thanks Dan. As soon as I get the Kallistra ones I’ll get some painted up and do a comparison. I’m looking forward to seeing what comes along next for this range. I might even attempt to build some buildings and stuff for it.

    Nice job Leon. I have to say it never occurred to me to use all the elements as one unit, I would do the same as you. One thing which might work is what we do in our 15mm ACW games, we have units the same number of bases as the stamina of the unit. Works well.

    Thank you for the wonderful review and painted examples. Your painting & basing skills never disappoint. Thanks for sharing with us my friend. It just occurred to me that these Warlord figures are actually the old Wargames Factory sculpts. The mounted cavalry figures match my old mounted Celts Cavalry box set from Wargames Factory. These would appear to be the same sculpts, probably done at least a decade ago before Warlord bought them out. I definitely think it's the same sculptor.

    • @troyz1972
      @troyz1972 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't thing Wargames Factory ever got around to releasing them all of those years ago. This might explain some of the shortcomings to the detail of these figures, since Warlord resurrected them. Any thoughts on this my friend?

    • @leont66wargaming31

    • @leont66wargaming31
      @leont66wargaming31  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not the cost. It’s the fact that with a little bit more thought in the production stage and they could easily have made the model a lot more versatile. So not every single gun would look exactly the same

    to be fair, forged in battle is also 15mm only in name. I did a picture comparison with peter pig and it's actually not TOO bad but yeah khallistra for sure.

  • @stevesandford1437
    @stevesandford1437 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Really excellent paint job on these minis. Your conversions show how these little figures can be customized and made look all-the-more effective on the table. (Your Rebels in particular really look the business!) A lot of people are suggesting that a Napoleonic 'Epic' range would be welcome, unfortunately, the difference in figure/soldier types doesn't really lend itself to such 'mass-production' in the way that ACW obviously does. In fact, perhaps only ECW might suit in this regard and these wouldn't be as popular, particularly in the USA as ACW or Nappies. It will be interesting to see if Warlord Games will add to this range with further figures such as a 'firing line', Zoaves or cavalry echelons? I'd imagine they might as, overall, the range seems to have been really well received. Great video and one that showcases the range. Warlord should send you a free boxes for the advertising of their product! xx SF

    • @leont66wargaming31
      @leont66wargaming31  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Steve. I did put in a little extra time on the Rebs. I think Zouaves and cavalry are next to be released. I think it’s more likely to be that fine cast stuff than plastic sprue.
      Yeah I don’t think Napoleonics will be any time soon. Way to many variations in uniform etc and the make up of battalions. I think ECW or maybe Crusades or something like you say that has limited options for troop choices. Maybe even dark ages?
      Yes it’d be nice if they sent me some freebies. I’m always plugging their stuff lol. I should start an email campaign. Bombard them with hundreds of emails from my subscribers demanding free stuff for me to paint and review hahaha

    I’m still annoyed about having 10 figure wide bases and no separate command bases.
    I prefer Fire & Fury brigade rules so I can play Pickets Charge rules or Regimental Fire & Fury using the same figures so I have to decide on 15mm figures or 10mm figures. I like shoulder to shoulder close basing rathe than the current open order style bases for some rules.

      @@leont66wargaming31 I’ll take a look. I hope the price is reasonable.
      As a thought someone was using roster sheets with 60 mm bases but I can’t remember who.
      There’s another set of rules that uses cohesion where a unit drops below a certain level and the command becomes more difficult .
      Baccus use 60mm bases for a regiment they used a pip system but didn’t call it that because Phil would have claimed it was his.
      Generally there’s nothing ‘new’ in war games but there is a way of getting things to work better.
      Without saying my way is best.
      A bit like the Holy Grail.
      Another way is strength points. A nail fitting a row of holes in the command bas of a battalion.
      Paint the nail to match Union troops light blue , navy blue and a black head for the nail. Just to make it less noticeable.

    Just received the update on the release from Warlord and it looks like zouaves, the Iron Brigade and mounted cavalry due in April, at £40 a box, with a bundle deal that offers little but casulty markers.
    First glance a tad expensive for, but given these can be padded out with kallistra minis and each infantry box is 300 minis - albeit in 10 man strips - not that bad. Just wondering about getting extra bases, I suppose I will have to check Renedra.
    Surprised they opted for mounted cavalry in this release and perhaps also surprised it was not a combine mounted/dismounted set with horse holders. Really hoped that the skirmishing miniatures would be up first after the main box as well as extra command stands- all about using that extra base per sprue and getting more "units on table as opposed to simply minis.

    • @leont66wargaming31
      @leont66wargaming31  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you totally. I think £40 a box is way too much. I like the look of the Zouaves but not keen on the iron brigade. Maybe they’ll paint up better.
      I’m disappointed with the cavalry too. Would of been so much better if they’d done dismounted cavalry as well like you said. Maybe Kallistra will substitute. It’s a pity as just mounted cavalry don’t play much of a role in the battles. Dismounted guys would of been a lot more useful.

      @@leont66wargaming31 I am sat here making yet another foot of snake fencing from cocktail sticks (cheapskate that I am)and was thinking what my overall plan for these minis is and I think I am looking at using them in two ways
      First of all I am moving towards one stand representing a full regiment (nominally 500 men or 1:25) this gives me plenty to stage a lot of various regimental actions, including 1st Manassas - Union roughly 48 regiments , Confederates roughly 35, artillery at a battery a base is covered as well. This should play to these mini strengths allowing plenty of room for manouvere. Rules of choice, probably A Union So Tested, not everyone's cup of tea but we like them over Black Powder - possible alternative will be the Peter Pig rules with a little teaking. For pick up games Field of Battle 3 and especially the campign system might be a winner
      For larger games seems straightforward to go to a brigade per base and given the 60mm frontage these is ideal for the Altar of Freedom ruleset - our go to for large games - or possibly Polemos
      Getting back to the zouaves and cavalry, I think I will still get a box of zouaves, as the equivalent in metals is even more expensive and 15 stands is more than enough for my needs. I am skipping on the Iron Brigade for now, a little simple conversion work on the standard sprues should suffice. Cavalry will be most likely Kallistra as I really only need one pack of each, and can then get two more for my £30 - likely to be the extra command groups I will definately need.
      Anyway not long to wait now.....

    I think the blue you've used for the trousers looks quite good - I've read that the trousers worn by the Union troops were darker than commonly portrayed by wargamers, so I think you've got the compromise between "actual" colour and brightening it up for the wargames table about right.
    I completely agree with you regarding "epic" games and the unit frontage of these sprues. As is, you could probably play one or two brigades per side on a six foot by four foot table (assuming two or three regiments up and two regiments in support), which doesn't seem very "epic" to me. The basing also doesn't seem to take into account the wide variation in regimental strengths during the ACW.
    I can understand the business model behind Warlord's constant "let's produce a game where you can buy everything from us in one box, and make it in a funny scale so people are then locked into sticking with us" - what I find a bit mystifying is why they chose to make things difficult for anyone who likes the figures but not their rules. Why make your stands ten figures wide? The "standard" ACW basing is a 20-25mm frontage - if they had made each group of figures four strong, rather than ten, that would have meant if you wanted to use their figures for Fire and Fury, or Johnny Reb III, or Guns at Gettysburg you could have (two ranks of four figures would look quite nice). Obviously Warlord would want something more "epic" for their ruleset so they could make their stands two of the four figure groups wide and two deep - and separated the command figures into their own four figure group meaning you wouldn't need to hack them about. This would still have given Warlord a regimental strength of 80 figures and a frontage of 20-25cm.
    Like you, I think the figures themselves are quite nice - I already have fairly large forces for the ACW in 15/18mm but I sometimes toy with the idea of starting over in 10mm. Unfortunately nobody produces 10mm ACW figures that really appeal to me - the price of being a sculpting snob!

      I haven’t ventured into 10mm so I can’t help at all there lol. These are probably the smallest minis I’ve ever painted and they do present a new challenge. I think for me anything smaller would be a bit of a push.
      It’ll be interesting to see what other lines the come up with for this scale/epic series of miniatures. I have a feeling they might go for a hail Caesar style army next.
      My main problem now is all my scenery is for 28mm so I guess I better get building some smaller stuff hahaha

      Also someone mentioned that Peter Pig might be a good match but I haven’t seen anyone do a comparison of those yet.

    Big fail for me that warlords did not do dedicated union and confed sprues. Your painting is lovely but you should not have to swap hats!

      Thanks mate. I think I just like the fact I won’t have to paint much cavalry

      @granapriego 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is problem with people, who say "15mil" or "14mil" is scale. "15mil" is not scale. If you want to scale something take REAL scale to your hands and measure, please, the figurines in question! How do you want to confess anybody to make figurines properly scaled if you want "15mil" instead of "1 to 100", - for example. Yes, this is so easy. Now - shout people. :))

    Such a waste....if they only had put a 4 figure frontage then this would have been awesome. Great figures but terribile footprint for gaming.

      Yes I was thinking a 30mm or 40mm frontage per base would have been much more playable. They definitely got that wrong

    Pathetic starters, there's no Cavalry in them, what????

      Lol. I hear you but I hate painting cavalry so I can live with it. Plus cavalry didn’t play a huge roll in many of the battles except as mounted infantry and scouts. If it’d of been a Napoleonic starter that’d of been something else
