Nice review of a ruleset I've been very curious about for ages. One thing though, wargaming didn't start with Games Workshop and they didn't invent or popularise the 'Turn', it has been a staple of wargaming since HG Wells wrote 'Little Wars'.

Nice to see an in person review for some of these smaller systems. I have often wondered about getting into one of the smaller, easily abstracted scales for Napoleonics as painting 600 troops at 28mm or even 15mm seems like a long road to go down.

Actually got a chance to meet the Little Wars TV team at Historicon 2019 where they put on a Gettysburg table at 6mm. Very impressive.

@@AnotherHistorianWargamer I’ll see if I still have any of the pics. If I do I will try to put them up on our Discord.

I use these rules…so much fun…turn clock and priority points and ease of play for operational historical games

I am going to try and use the black powder epic battles miniatures with this ruleset, the bases may work well even if the figures are big, I am looking forward to trying out and seeing how the game plays

I’m going down the ‘hundreds of tiny bases’ approach - like ‘brigade fire and fury. I’m going to home brew little wars tv’s ‘live free or die’ AWI rules and convert them to ACW.

Thanks for making this video, I went for irregular miniatures 2mm scale and just halved all the distances etc from the rules.
Regarding your cavalry rule, maybe roll a D6, if a 5/6 is rolled then apply your -1 modifier??
I’m just getting into this, do you have any suggestions on how to solo this with a rough AI turn clock??
Looking forward to more altar of freedom!
    Cheers

      Thanks for the comment.
The AI turn clock does seem like a big issue to try and get around. You'd probably have to play the personalities. So if a general was particularly aggressive or defensive you'd have to assign points accordingly. Honestly I doubt if this game can be made single player which is a big shame.

Thanks for a great honest review. I’ve been wanting to play this system for years as it seems to have some great mechanics and is a nice way to play larger battles. Have you ever played or thought of having the units as regiments rather than brigades? Basically getting more units on the board for smaller engagements? Thanks

It would be an interesting way to play although I've never done it. You would get bogged down with the influence bidding but with multiple people on both sides and a whole day you could maybe do it.

Great review! I'm considering Warlord Games Epic Battles ACW line, which is 13.5mm with 20 figures in two ranks on a 20x60mm base. The basing is close to the 6mm figures with 24 figures in two ranks on a 30x60mm that you presented. Do you think that this scale of figures would work for Altar of Freedom? Would you scale up the terrain to 10-15mm to match the figures or keep them at the 3-6mm Greg Wagman recommends to match the basing/6mm figures? What attracted you to the 6mm figures? If you were starting over again, would you pick that scale or another one?

I use 15mm for Altar of Freedom.
