    I just got done watching like 20 "stripped lugnut removal" and " how to replace a stud" videos. Kudos to you for doing it the right way. Step one, try an extractor nut. Step 2 if that doesn't work drill out the stud, you've gotta most likely replace it anyways and in the case of this video he did no damage to the wheel with any chisels or torches. BRAVO

    Good video. Used a 1/2" cobalt bit to solve my own catastrophe. It was the only method that worked. Mechanics love to put insane torque on lug nuts. Got my tires changed and it took almost 250ftlbs to get the nuts off. No wonder they strip the studs.

    Hade this happen today on my wife’s SUV with expensive after market black rims, I freaked out. I def wasn’t going to put heat to it and thought about a pneumatic chisel but knew that would have def trashed the rim. Found this vid and did just this and got the rim off with out even a scratch. Used colbolt bits small and worked my way up with cutting oil. Drill slow and press hard, ripped right through it. Def appreciate the video 👍👍👍

    Same problem. 24 bucks got solid chromed lug nuts for all 4 wheels on my wife's Cherokee... only one broken lug nut. Had a tire shop change them out for me because my 300 torque lb. impact wouldn't budge any of them. Not my first time dealing with these stupidly designed chrome covered POSes, but it will be the last on this vehicle. Thanks for the video.

    Good job. The caps get ruined from the guys at the tire shops running their guns at way higher torque than they should. Anytime you get new tires, when you get home, loosen, then re-torque your lug nuts one at a time to specs, then re-check them 30 days later. If they sit for a long time after being over-torqued, you might have a hard time getting them off later.
    I read lots of questions asking about the drill bit you used. I don't think hat was a carbide bit, it was a probably a cobalt bit. Regular high-speed steel bits are generally not hard enough to drill through a lug without a pilot hole. Be advised, good quality bits are not cheap, but low-quality bits can be more expensive in the long run, especially if you break one off in the lug. Remember to push the drill bit hard enough to cut the steel, but not so hard that you break the bit. Cutting with too little pressure can actually work-harden the lug. Keep the RPM medium to low and use cutting paste/fluid. If you don't have cutting paste or fluid, use any kind of lubricant to keep the bit cool.
    Advanced tip: If you can find a wooden dowel, or make one that is exactly the same diameter as the hole your lug nut sits in, drill a hole dead-center in a 2-3 inch dowel the same size as your starter bit. Put the dowel in the lug hole and it will be in the dead-center of the lug. Drill a starter hole in the lug, then remove the dowel and continue drilling.

    I had this same issue today. I have some Hercules drill bits from harbor freight and a Bauer cordless 20v cordless drill. I tried this method and it worked! Started wit a small drill bit and stepped up from there until i drilled through the threads. Took about 30 mins to an hour. I didnt use a punch, although that would of probably helped centering it. I didnt use any oil, just have to have some sharp bits and dont force it or else you'll break bits inside.

    you could also try a left handed drill bit if you can find one close to the diameter of the stud you punch it drill it in a little bit then hit the reverse on the drill and throttle on and off on and off until it grabs it and releases the lug nut

    • @TonyFleetwood

    • @1MNUTZ
      @1MNUTZ 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      nvm your threads are fixed on the rotor that's why it's all messed up at the end of the video, other cars for instance a volkswagen uses a bolt rather than just a nut on a fixed stud and it would work better with a bolt because then the bolt would be extractable rather than drilled completely out

    • @TonyFleetwood
      @TonyFleetwood  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      the first bit is the key, if you drill nice and slow with a carbide bit, you can use the regular kind of drill bits from then on to step up the hole size. if you drill too fast it will burn out the bit and it wont cut well and make the process take longer. plus its a good idea to use some kind of lube when cutting the first hole. i used wd-40 but lots of stuff will work, its just to keep the drill bit cool.

It took us 2 god damn hours, because we had to go through the lug nut and the stud, and, AND the lug nut was an extended thread, so we had to drill an extra 3/8" or something. I don't know what the guys up front charged him, but I would have charged him a minimum $100 and extra money for the drill bits that got fucked up.

    It doesn't matter how long you own a car, how corroded it is. Corrosion is a function of environment plus exposure length.
    There's no way that those wheels and brakes looked like that with only one year of wear, unless it was a hurricane victim.
    BTW acorn nuts aren't a problem. Cheap fasteners are.
