3 Ways to Remove a Stripped Lug Nut

  • A tire shop had rotated my tires and installed them back on my SUV with an impact wrench. The impact wrench torqued on the lug nuts overly tight. When I used my tire iron to remove the lug nut, it completely stripped the lug. The chrome finish on the lug nut was also removed, causing the lug nut to rust.
What can a car owner do to remove the stripped lug nut? I will so you 3 methods to remove the lug nut. The 3 methods are listed below:
Method #1: Use a cold chisel
    - First punch downward with the chisel to create a groove to "catch" the lug nut
    - Then turn the chisel sideways about 45 degrees and punch counter-clockwise.
Cons - Chisel can slip and damage rims
Method #2: Use a common 12-point socket wrench
    - Use a slightly smaller socket then your lug nut
    - Hammer the 12-point socket onto the lug nut until it's firmly seated
    - Use a socket wrench to turn the 12-point socket
Cons - The 12-point socket wrench will likely be destroyed after hammering onto the stripped lug nut.
Method #3: Use a bolt extractor
    - Hammer the bolt extractor socket onto the lug nut until it's firmly seated
    - Use a socket wrench to turn the bolt extractor socket
Cons - one time cost to purchase socket
I highly recommend method #3 using the bolt extractor. It's a lot less likely to damage your rims and you can use the extractor many times over if you have other stripped lug nuts. It's not a very expensive investment.

HEY GUYS!! one thing that also worked for me yesterday is copper! in construction when a tapcon (aka concrete screw) is too small for its hole we strip a wire and use the copper strands to put in the hole and it basically fills the voids.SAME PRINCIPLE HERE!! find a wire u dont really need, strip it, put the bare copper strands inside your wrench, then put the wrench on the nut and SLOWLY torque it. may take some tries but it works!!

The second way with the socket worked perfectly for me. Thankfully I had like 6 of that size so ruining one wasn't a problem. I banged it on with a heavy hammer 3 whacks it was on. The lug came off so easy. 12 point socket for the win. To get it off I used vice grips on the socket and just pulled straight out. Thanks for the video very helpful.

For anyone who has these type of lug nuts, they are just a cap on top of the real lug nut and are hollow on the inside. If you take a flat head screwdriver and hammer it in the center, you can make a hole and wiggle it around a bit. Take some needle nose pliers and peel back the cap, then you’ll see the real lug nut and can pull it off no problem since that part isn’t stripped.

A regular 6 point socket will work for this rounded bolt which WAS caused by overtorquing with impact gun which it just the shell no biggie happens a lot just hammer it on to the rounded bolt and I wiggle the socket around the bolt to get it back to normal size and it's good again

One easy way to avoid it is to get rid of those things before they can cause a problem. A local tire shop not far from my house has good solid ones with a chrome plating that look good. They are also just a dollar each. That was the best 20 dollars I ever spent on that car. You also have the piece of mind knowing those awful things will never bother you again. My next car was a 2002 Neon and it had those on it too. I got rid of those two piece lug nuts first chance I had for the same things I got on the last car for a dollar each.

    1. lug is welded to the goddamn stud.
    2. The gag is on me and reverse threaded studs were put in place ;)

I had this issue also. Same car. I inserted a piece of plumber’s tape within a 6 point socket, hammering it onto the lug nut until it bottoms out, and removed the lug nut successfully. This was after I spent over $22 for a special socket that failed to remove the lug nut. Plumber’s tape is very inexpensive.

Thanks for the video! The method that worked best for me was the 12 point socket which was 1 mm less than the bolt. The problem that I had not anticipated (although I was warned) was removing the bolt from the socket after I got it out. I actually had to put it back on and eventually I yanked it off, but that did not work for the second lug nut. So what I did was I got a machine screw that was the size of the tire bolt and screwed that into the stuck lug nut, then pried with a screwdriver between the lug nut rim and the socket. Eventually I got it off. Then I came up with an even better idea - before mounting the 12 pt socket onto the bolt, I sprayed liberally with lubricant and I put a dime inside (my reasoning was I could bang out the lug nut from above with a punch, as my lug nuts had holes on the top of them since the aluminum covering came off). Anyway, long story short I got off the lug nuts without having to buy a new socket for each lug nut. Thanks again!

If the lug has really fused to the wheel because of rust, none of those processes will work. In that case, the thread stripping technique will need to be done. That could damage the stem, but that's the price that you would have to accept.

2015 F150 lug nut removal: Cursing Ford as I worked, I used a 21mm 12 point deep socket (6 point may also work) and hammered it on at least half way. Removed with breaker bar. Mount socket in vise and tap out stuck lug nut with the biggest punch possible to prevent it punching through and getting stuck. This makes the swollen lug nuts unusable. I replaced with gorilla brand lug nuts which require a 13/16 lug wrench. Torque to 150 ft/lb.

I raised the vehicle back up and tried to remove the nut ( it was already loose before it hit the ground and got jammed) …….as I tried to loosen it all the way it got tighter at the very end and wouldn’t come off …… do you know how I can remove it ??

Anyone who has these lug nuts with the cheap caps, get rid of them immediately...you can go to get a full set of solid lugs with no caps at any auto parts store for $50 bucks

It's really stupid how they put those dam covers over the lug nuts. That's the problem with the lug nuts.

I have a Dodge Dart with the lug bolts that use a decorative cover. That cover is your problem here. Mine are swollen on my front driver side rim. You supposedly can use needle nose pliers and wiggle that cover off of the actual lug bolt. Try that next time and it may save you some time.

You didn't get the lug nut far enough on the nut. What happens is tire shops use impacts and these deform the crappy chrome cover design and this makes it hard to get the socket fully seated the next time you try to remove it. The lugs get stuck in the socket and are to remove also. Makes a simple job turn into a PIA.

I used the second way for 2 lugs because I'm to cheap to buy the extractor socket also I used a regular 6 point socket and unfortunately a cheap socket probably won't work because it's to brittle

I just stripped a front wheel lug nut while doing a pad and Rotor replacement on my 2004 Ford Expedition. I am going to get a 12 point socket ,and a Bolt extraction tool except I have a two foot steel pipe that I use for torque which should make things go a lot easier . I should have been using that from the get go ,but I was using a 4-way lug wrench ,and the torque pipe would not fit on the 4-way. I was using a mini sledge hammer to loosen the lugs on the other front wheel ,and they came off without strippage. Now I am remembering some dipshit tire joint over-tightened my lugs ,causing what should have been a 2-3 hour Pad and rotor job , into a 5 hour nightmare!!! Always insist at tire place that they torque lugs to factory specs when having new tires installed. I am sick of this crap ,and will not go through this any more. Many tire shops are Hacks !

Same happened to me. Theres too many little Jits working at these places with very little education so they mess with people all day long even though we trust them to, at the VERY LEAST, DO THEIR JOB CORRECTLY. You are Very lucky if they do their job WITHOUT being a little Jit in my opinion. Still have 4 stuck lugs left so the frustration is still raw.

Technically if you have to use anything longer than a 1/2 in drive breaker bar, you're lugs are way too tight. When you go to a tire shop and get something done, watch these guys and see how long they put the guns to your lugs. If you want and I have been doing this long enough but to get a feel for it, when you get home, take the lug off. If it took a 6 ft pipe and a couple people to turn it, dont go back to that place. If you use a ratchet like he has and can loosen it with one finger, dont go back. Proper torque can be found online by credible sources, the manufacturer or handbooks. If you DIY, use a torque wrench. Learn to use it correctly and it will save you and your loved ones alot of time and money.

why has this video got so many dislikes ?......i have a 17mm lug-nut that just keeps on spinning...i have not tried this bolt extractor....I did not use any air impact tools to put it on so don't understand why this happened.

What about "stripped Threads" where the tire lug nut turns without success.
