Definitely recommend washing these plates with some washing up liquid before use, and then using isopropyl between prints to remove residues (ASA especially),, as I find the adhesion can be a little less than a textured PEI sheet. Cool to see these new additions to the ranges.
I just bought these as well, i know they're a trend, but man I keep finding really great spots to use them in. The one thing I can't find though, is a STARs one that only has the small dots but NOT the big stars on it. that would look so cool
I'm glad I could help turn you on to a using the circle plate as well as using the Smooth/High Temp plate setting.
Pro tip to others - don't use glue stick as that would mess up the image transfer. Rather run about 10c hotter than you would normally. If that doesn't work then increase another 5c until it sticks. I use IPA on the plates w/ a micro fiber cloth in between each print, and if I get one being stubborn I will just Dawn dish detergent to try and make sure there is no grease on them.
I do have one of these plates (the starry one) that struggles with adhesion, and that could be just a bad "sticker" on that one.
Build plates do wear out - they are consumables.
“Really really cool” 😂
“Really really cool” 😂
the video does not do it justice.
a couple of downsides are:
The "texture" is very susceptible to hiding from finger prints. (on the print, a finger print might hide the effect)
Obviously it is only on the build surface.
The build surface is harder to stick to. Meaning more failed prints. Because the texture is what is being transferred to the part. using an adhesive like glue stick needs some tricks. The adhesive fills the "texture" reducing the effect.
🤘BITCHIN🤘I have the carbon fiber and the last one you showed on Amazon. These have really taken-off in popularity. But, you know me! I use the ENGINEERING plate for almost everything 😉
Most of my prints are with PETG. I have not been able to get my prismatic plate working with PETG yet, unfortunately.
I've washed it, used alcohol, increased bed temp. No dice!
Very Cool !
I use the H1H plate from Amazon. Its REALLY good , has a nice pattern and really adhears well
Did you have any issues with 1st layer adhesion?
Man those are so crazy!! I wonder how long it can produce that finish?
they are rellitivly soft, and easy to scratch. Depending on the exact material it does not release for some materials.
I bought one of these build plates but have not yet started testing it. Do you know if this will work for PETG as well as PLA ? Can these be used without glue stick ? I've hate if PLA/PETG sticks too well to these and they get torn apart. Also, one of the surfaces you showed had a 300C claim, I wonder if the same effect could be seen for ASA/ABS/PC (and wonder if glue stick would also be necessary). Your channel is one of my go-to places to find practical information about printing materials, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for documenting it so well. The one thing I cannot find good information (anywhere) about is when to use glue stick and when not to... This subject is a checkerboard of competing half thoughs. Misinformation about this practice is so bad that in forums posts still pop with debates about if glue stick is a release agent or improves adhesion. Surface treatment (or lack of) of build plates is however VERY important, just think of the time it takes one person to spread glue stick in a single build plate multiplied per the amount of 3D prints, OR the failed prints and ripped plates due to misunderstanding of surface treatment.
when to use glue stick is complicated. There are a lot of factors. the old saying "it depends on what direction the wind is blowing" is not far from the truth. The reason that is true ,in this case is: humidity. Let along it depends on all of your other settings. Most setting are interrelated. Every setting change has unintended consequences. A hint for glue stick is Purple works better. After you apply, use a damp towel to spread around. the goal is to have a thin film of the adhesive (glue) all over.
How many times can you use the plats?
they work many times. So far I have printed 50 times on the same plate. See my other comment to this video.
I did have a case of a double sided build plate, I missed some fine debree under the build plate. It dented the surface . Effectivly ruining the surface.
Have a few, and my x1c WILL NOT get the nozzle close enough to the holographic bedplates.
try setting your build plate in Bambu studio to a gloss plate. use the "holigraphic" plate. default setting should work fine. If you are using custom setting it is hard to debug. There are reasons to adjust most every setting. so it gets complicated very quickly. The major factor is the first layer.
Switch to the textured PEI build plate in Studio (or Orca) and it will drop the nozzle an additional 0.04mm to compensate for the texture. That should do it. If not, you can adjust the compensation in the Machine Start GCode. Just don't go too low or you will risk hitting the nozzle on the plate and ruining the plate, or even bending the nozzle.
I had the exact same issue but here is the solution that fixed it for good. Do this simple trick, disable plate detection in bambu studio. and since then it works every time for me and will for you. If not you can print a qr code but me i never did that. Just be careful because after that you have to make sure you put on the correct plate, but you wont regret that decision
was looking at that plate on amazon ''Smooth Skynet +Smooth Gemini Spring Steel'' earlier this evening, but the price (50 CAD) and the low quality picture did not do it justice but after seeing your result i was blown away. and i know i can probably get it way cheaper on that aliexpres but godamn it already got a cheap ass mortgage and bought my car full price so what the hell, will receive it this Thursday
