- At WWDC 2024, Apple announced it's first major AI feature "Apple Intelligence", which brings a suite of new tools to the iPhone and Mac. Apple has it's own foundation models, but will also rely on OpenAI in the cloud for certain AI jobs.

“Great artists steal”
@@rck2214 By making it their own. That doesn't seem to be what Apple's doing here. The thing is Apple's been behind the curve for a while now. They just have really good marketing. Or as someone else put it, Apple is a marketing firm that just happens to sell hardware. Given their App Store is a huge money maker for them, I'd add they're a payment processor too.
I had an app that did that on a shitty motorola 7 or 8 years ago lol
Samsung spend their profits on R&D and lead the way in tech development.
Apple spend their profits on marketing to convince basic bitches that they are the pinacol of consumer tech.

The private cloud runs some specific models which Apple has chose. ChatGPT only comes in when the on-device processing thinks it might yield a better result than the models on the private cloud. It seems like ChatGPT has to be activated first and requests must be approved by the user before data is sent to them (they might give you an always allow option). I’m pretty sure no OpenAI models are running on the private cloud and instead are running on their own servers. Apparently they will also be adding more models to choose from in the future to presumably that just plugs into their relevant APIs. Basically ChatGPT isn’t the default (and isn’t even coming at launch) and you’ll get to choose other models in the future besides Apple’s LLM and ChatGPT. Too bad this doesn’t solve the problem of it not being Opt-In so your data is still sent to Apple.

Small correction: Apple will try to resolve AI related requests on device first, then process it in their own data centers (so called "secure cloud") and if none of the two works gives a result, then it will ask you if you want the request to be sent to OpenAI, and in the last scenario you will be prompted for approval on the specific data which would be shared with OpenAI, apparently not tracked nor correlated with other requests.

“I have my own theory about why decline happens at companies like IBM or Microsoft. The company does a great job, innovates, and becomes a monopoly or close to it in some field. The company starts valuing the great salesman, because they’re the ones who can move the needle on revenues, not the product engineers and designers. So the sales people end up running the company.”
