  • Is Maker World better than Printables for redeeming points? We're going to find out!
    Help support this channel! / needitmakeit
    Through a twist of fate (Thanks Martin) I started to post my designs on Maker World and to my surprise, I started to generate points quickly. Having already gone through the process of redeeming points on Printables, I thought that it couldn't hurt to try out Makerworld as well. I had no expectations and I thought it would be about the same amount of cost to me as Printables was. Well I have to say that I was wrong about that, but I don't want to spoil it for you, check out the video to find out how good this site can really be to it's good designers and maybe it can be just as good to you as well.
    Makerworld seems to have distribution centers around the world for their products and that also means that shipping time was quite a bit different than Prusa as well.

      I don't like to promote any one brand, though the Bambu printers are really well designed and built. I've just struggled with PETG on them. I've moved my X1C to the basement to free up some space in my shop as well, and so that I can print while I record, printers running while recording are bad for audio-quality.

      @@NeedItMakeIt I print almost exclusively PETG in my P1S, A1's and K1 Max. Bed adhesion can be a pain to clean up, but otherwise they all consistently nail it unless I neglect to clean the bed one too many times. K1 Max can be very sensitive about that (textured PEI) but all of them share that problem. So I've made it a point to wipe the bed after each print with a squirt of Simple Green. I do often print with the K1 door and lid on, and that has not caused a problem with PETG, and I've done that with the P1S sometimes as well, but my lid is always two inches elevated so not the same thing. My wife seems to have a penchant for clogging her A1 with her glittery, glowy PLA filaments.

It does make a difference for adhesion, it seems to hold onto that first layer better without glue. So thank you for this video! Since watching it I've been a busy bee on makerworld, and just earned a 2nd AMS, and a ton of filament. Of course they JUST revamped the system with BOOSTs so we'll see how that goes. But with just one model I made over $600 in $40 gift cards, if I hadn't bought a bunch of filament and plates and the AMS I could have literally bought a whole other printer. Perfect, through a twist of fate I ended up switching to MW and I think I'm about the 1K mark for cards, that's Canadian, and I have quite a few models on there now. With the new system the points have slowed quite a bit, but they're still coming, so that's okay, and with truly free shipping, it's still worth using them over any other side IMO. Is it better to redeem for the gift certificates as you go or save up points to get enough vouchers for what you want?

      I haven't opened up the red yet, I'm waiting for the right project, but the filament looks good so far, Black and Grey are printing nice, no complaints.
      If it were me, I'd redeem as soon as I had enough points to cash in for free shipping. If you're saving for an AMS or a printer and it's slow going, I suppose I'd wait as long as possible. I have a feeling that Bambu will be changing this setup because it seems like it is costing them a lot. They must be making a push to have as many people jump over to their platform and then they'll make the adjustment, that's my guess, but time will tell.
      I have one GC left with some money left on it, but I don't know which it is. I still have each of them listed so it seems fairly straight forward to go back through each of them to get the right one.

      Maybe with some pressure, Printables will make some changes to be more competitive, but for now, rewarding people for their good work seems like a pretty good idea. When people steal other people's work and remix with little to no effort, that's not such a great part of it. There should be more strict rules on that. I have someone on Creality Print that added "K1" to the part and that was it, but they at least left my logo on it, provided attribution and linked my video.

      @@802Garage I've had some experiences with Ebay and it did not work out like this at all, they continue to allow people to sell my designs from my videos, even using images from my videos to sell their products. The final solution was to not post the newer versions of the model, if they want to sell it, they're selling the less functional one.
      What do you think constitutes a good remix? Is there anything in writing that's clear for everyone to see, or is any change at all a remix and I should just get over it?

    • @802Garage
      @802Garage 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@NeedItMakeIt I think it depends on the license of the original design. If it was put up as fully open source with no attribution required, people can do whatever they want, even if it is being sold in some form. If it was put up with a non-commercial license, meaning any derivatives should only be personal use and not sold for profit, I don't think any form of remix is acceptable. If commercial licensing is allowed, but only with attribution and modification, then I believe the remix should add, remove, or change a function of the device In order to be sold without issue. Oviously that's a super gray area though. So I think put very simply, non-commercial license, it cannot be sold in any form altered or not they have to design completely from scratch, even if they copy your design. Commercial license, it can pretty much be sold in any form even if someone straight up steals it because what are you going to do about it? In a case like this, just removing a logo, obviously that's bogus. There is nothing you can do to stop someone from completely copying your design in a case like this, but if you can prove that they literally used your file or if the part is essentially identical and came later, I think websites should take it down as copyright infringement. I needed a Bowdoin tube clip for example that was not the size that came with my printer and not the size of any files I could find online, so I designed one completely from scratch. It looks nearly identical to many others, but I started with a raw sketch in Fusion 360. Functionally the same as other designs, but clearly not stolen. If I had taken someone else's file, lowered the height by half a millimeter, and then wanted to sell it, I still think that would be bogus, but obviously it's hard to go after something like that. With more complicated designs it's more obvious.

    Do you make tuned filament profiles for each of your machine/filament combinations? No one seems to ever mention if they do or not, so the quality of a print in a video becomes kind of meaningless to me. I've found that fit & finish, corner sharpness, and layer lines will vary depending on whether or not you use the proper flow ratio, max volumetric speed, and pressure advance values. Pretty easy to find out the proper settings to use for those (especially in OrcaSlicer) and you only need to do it once for each brand and type of filament (though it can be good to do per-color as well, but I don't go that far). Of course, these settings do vary from printer to printer (at least from model to model) as well.

      The nice thing is, if you use the AMS and Bambu's software, (maybeeee Orca can read from the AMS) soon as you drop that new spool in there, it configures it via the RFID chips for your specific attached machine to what is factory tested/suggested for flow rate, bed temp, tip temps, speed, etc. That alone makes the price of using their filament worth it to me. Especially when they have their bulk savings day where you can pick up a 1kg reel for 16-19$ depending on what it is.

    10:50 yea the number one reason why it was created is because they copied Prusas website and needed users to make it worthwhile for anyone to use it.
    these programs are just there to attract users to your website and thats it.
    beside this the reason why this works for Bambulabs is because China is still considered a developing nation and is benefiting from insanely cheap international shipping rates thanks to that, on top of that the CPP also subsidizes the little shipping cost that remains which is the main reason why everything shipped from China is so cheap.
    Prusa is only like a 4 hour drive away from me and yet getting something shipped from them costs more than getting it shipped from China.

    • @NeedItMakeIt
      @NeedItMakeIt  หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are some people still benefiting from Pintables, but it's not justifiable any longer for me to use them especially when I can truly get filament and parts for free. Of course no matter which way you look at it, the company is benefiting from our work in the sales of filament and the more designs we post the more they are printed etc. I also expect that they're making a big push to get people hooked, long-term I'm not sure what it will look like, but for the time being it's the place to be posting your work, that or maybe Etsy or similar.
      I can see your point, they have an advantage over other countries, which I suppose is why just about everything seems to be made in China these days. I just purchased some metric Allen keys and they were made in the Czech, but I paid about 4X the price for them. They look amazing, and I hope they last.
      I'm all about competition so we'll see what Printables does to compete, so far I haven't seen much aside from them bringing back the 3 spool combo.

    • @Pixelplanet5
      @Pixelplanet5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@NeedItMakeIt the 3 spools combo not being there is a temporary thing as they currently have so much demand for their filament that they cant produce enough even with the new filament line they just recently build.
      beside this Printables cant compete with free shipping and that was never the point of all of this.
      the entire reason why printables exists is that there was no good platform for 3d models as Thinigverse has been unusable for years at that point.
      Of course with all the subsidies and cheap labor its easy for bambulabs to undercut anything especially when they literally almost made a one to one copy from printables and just changed the design a tiny bit to make it less obvious.

I hide my logo within the models, they're not visible from the outside, and they're very thin as well, it's not going to be something that's easy to see unless you look at the correct angle in x-ray mode and are also quite zoomed in. My first two printers were from Prusa, they were expensive for what their capabilities were at the time but I liked their support and their dedication to open source. I don't make money on the printers, they are just for personal use and gifts I make people, I've never been able to make money on them. I'm sad that I'm considering a printer from Bambu now but as I live in the US Prusa is just too expensive for me. I'd use their filament if shipping was cheaper and buy their printers if they had a support hub and warehouse in the US but shipping just kills me.

      I think Prusa still has a good name, and they've remained good printers over time, and considering that they were constructed from printed parts, it's pretty impressive.
      My feeling is that with some pressure they'll make the appropriate adjustments and should become more competitive. Maker World seems to be so much more advantageous to use than Printables unless maybe you live in the EU. I am still a bit shocked that I didn't need to pay for anything, and also I have cashed in again for 3 more spools, but this time of PETG-CF. I also think that Maker World will begin to change as more people jump to their platform.
      There are some more companies coming up which are very competitive, one is FLSUN, with what may be the fastest printers to-date and QIDI, with printers that perform well and have heated chambers. Lots of other companies are following the COREXY format as well, so we'll see what they come out with, it should be interesting to see.

Like the first inkjet printers for home usage back in time. IF they manage to do that their business will be valuable that it was worth all the investment. Just with printing hardware this wouldn't be possible. These one click prints from the app and that people spend time to optimize designs and profiles are a major key for it to be possible.
      Without such rewards i would design way less and not go sometimes through multiple iterations before i publish something. Unlike printables or other platforms they make sure that the time and material of the designers is compensated at least a good bit.

But makerworld did not only copy that festure from printables. It‘s a complete straight copy. I mean in my opinion. Bambu is not a good company with pantenting more and more open source. But nobody cares and all are happy and not caring about data issues any more. Of course there are the smartphones, home assistants who always listens ans so it is ok to send all data to china. Yeah. Just consume without thinking. What a brave new world.

      Everyone copies everyone within the 3DPing game, competition breeds innovation and im sure that the existence of Makerworld has placed at least some semblance of pressure on Prusa and Printables, as the existence of Bambu Labs as a whole likely has, and im sure that has lead to at least some changes already and potentially further changes in the future
      In short, if copying is that offensive to you. 3DP is not the game to be in.

      @@ThatsNotMyArm YES! Every company should have competition. It'd be like having a sport, but there is only one player. "I am the best"... yes you are the only person, so by default you must be the best. If Prusa wants to stay in the game, they'll make some adjustments and come back stronger. I'd like to see that happen. For now, Maker World is doing a better job and people will jump over. I'm making about 25 -50 points a day, which means for me that I don't need to buy the filament for all of these videos. It's not Prusa quality, but it's pretty close.

      @@ThatsNotMyArm then you didn‘t understand me. I‘m not against copying open source. That is what everyone did so far. But copying open source and making it closed source through patents like bambu is doing it and will do in the future is not ok.
