      Interesting you used those two as an example, because they were both actually left handed but stood orthodox. Standing more square makes it easier to shift balance to the lead leg and gives more space to rotate with the left hook. Canelo also does this on purpose to bait people into throwing certain punches and for the power left hook, in the Caleb plant fight he literally finished him with a Tyson combo from a square stance he weaved and threw the power left hook.

      Tony is right in a broad sense. The feet alignment is very popular in ancient martial arts like Kung Fu and the traditional Karate. It provides the advantage of leaping back and forth increasing the distance for defense and filling the gap swiftly delivering a punch from a distance, where your opponent doesn't expect attack in one step. Besides the sport aspect of fighting, in real fight for life in the real world, the feet alignment diminish the danger of collecting a snap-kick under the crotch. Instead of checking with the front leg the low kicks it would be better to have your weight shifted towards the back leg so that the center of the gravity splits your stance in two sections at a ratio of 2 to 1 ( closer to the back leg ). This would give you the advantage to retreat your front leg swift and your opponent would just kick air. The technique is like kicking a ball with your rear leg pushing the ground and leaping backwards. The retreat of your front leg is then as swift as a hand's turn.

  • @ClintAlexander1985

    I'm sure there are alot of peekaboo students like myself who disagree. If you see someone standing, square up it could mean 2 things. They don't know what they're doing, or they really know what their doing.
    You may be fighting someone with agressive defense because this stance is effective for slipping jabs and weaving under hooks, while being in a position to generate alot of force during counter punches.

    • @rigatonilegend4463
      @rigatonilegend4463 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I also like to use this stance because I feel like I have more mobility when it comes to head movement. Also because you’re so square it’s super easy to cut the ring off by just stepping to whatever side your opponent goes. I grew up watching JCC fight and have always loved using this style

    • @iticotaco5603
      @iticotaco5603 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@rigatonilegend4463 As a southpaw its a bit more common to see a slightly more squared stance to allow for the constant horizontal movement and angle hunting, so that power shot is always ready to travel down the pipe. Angling back too much puts your left back in outer space and makes it easy to see coming

    • @Jdonn41
      @Jdonn41 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a decent point but if you practice that stance over time you'll be able to regain if not gain more power once you start practicing it also he's more so showing a better way to be less of a target, not having more power which for my style works a lot. He does have other videos though that work on power you can work those drills with this stance and get really skilled not only with defense but as you were talking power and offense:)

  • @shaalis
    @shaalis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'd say that's a "marginal" difference. You end up opening up your kidney area in that stance, and anything comes wide left you won't catch it very well. A more square stance allows a huge medly of freedom of movement and you can hit more equally with lefts and right while you really let the opponent know which hand is doing what. However that narrower stance makes more sense in say sport karate where you want to provide an angle to glance kicks off of. It's harder to hit key targets and it protects your liver better, as well as your chin and neck.

You've helped me SO much in my training so I mean this with the highest respect for your knowledge but... your totally wrong here. just ask Mike tyson... Yes squaring up makes you a bigger target, but it also gives you more striking options, and if you know how to shift your position while punching, you make up the power loss from your rear hand being more forward. You can also hit with more speed and move better laterally
    Squared. I fought heavily bladed my whole life because when I was younger I thought the same thing, and it's true at range that side on is better. Now I'm older and the young blokes I'm fighting are huge, I need to get inside... and let me tell you if you know what your doing square on the inside is much safer then bladed on the inside.

    Julion cesar Chavez sometimes purposely has a wide stance and stands square. But that's because he knows when to change the stance, and what he wants to do by squaring up in a wide stance. So, this guy is 100% right. If you're standing like this from start to finish no matter what distance, you're absolutely wrong.

    That stance "with toes pointing FORWARD" is good for Kickboxing but not for boxing. Because for kickboxing, you will have easier time kicking and checking leg kicks. But in boxing you are exposed and have no real benefits. In Kickboxing, you are also exposed a bit, but at least it provides some easier defence

      @Tony_Jeffries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Tony_Jeffries 😂. Don't make fun of me like that 😂. That's too much compliment. I am just a beginner, even by a beginner's standard.
      See, for kicking, a bladed stance requires you to move too much for kicking. Same goes for checking kicks by lifting leg and turning the shin bone 45° as a defence, which is difficult in bladed stance. That's why kickboxers have "awkward stance". They don't even turns during hooks, because that would expose calf for low kicks and it will be a low kicker's dream.

  • @ivanvs4497

    Does this work in kickboxing? Usually see square stances

    • @33a7
      @33a7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will have trouble kicking and kneeing fast, especially with the left leg.
      You will be more exposed to low kicks since you won't be able to check them. For these reasons, kickboxers tend to be a little bit more square than boxers, and muay thai fighters are even more square than kickboxers.
      By the way, many top boxers, mosly the ones who have an aggressive style, use the square stance (Julio Cesar Chavez, Tyson, Golovin, etc).

    P.s. this dance also makes it harder for your opponent to see your Jab coming. You don't have to twist your shoulders to throw it so your opponent never see that Telegraph.

      When you're square you can counter with BOTH hands in a close up brawl AND weave in and out and block in both directions; where as a more bladed stance only allows you to generate power with one.

    It is a pressured fighting stance designed mainly for shorter or inside fighters. If you are fighting against a taller fighter, you cannot outbox that person with a bladed stance. His reach could outbox you easily. You have to swarm in with good head movement and throw those flurries of hooks and uppercuts to subdue your opponents taller than you.
    Fighters like Joe Frazier, Floyd Patterson, David Tua and Tommy Morrison had killer left hooks. If you got hit by one of those, left hook, you would feel like kissing an express train. It is an instant fighter ender. How many tall fighters have been knocked out cold with that deadly left hook. Only way you could execute your left hook punch with ease is through some degree of being squared up. Peekaboo ain't too much squared up, coz if you are too much squared up, then you would be an easy target for sure. Roberto Duran used to trap up his opponent hands and fight them at close quarters. Mayweather is known for his defense all over the world, but Maidaina exposed him in the whole world that Floyd ain't that difficult to beat. He made Mayweather bleed in that fight. Mr Jeffry, please do your homework before you make such videos

    Well many world champions use a larger stance because it gives more balance. Its also about your athletic skills, how quick you are and how you move your feets. A normal boxing stance is like that yes but you have many other feet stances than the tradisional stance. Ali for example what about his stance1 Ray Leonard, Conor Macgregor although MMA, Sugar Ray Robinson. All these greats has wide boxing stances because the move and dance. The are floading not stand still

    Even the second stance and guard is wrong. Every kid in amature boxing knows that elbows must be narrow, right elbow is always on the liver, left shoulder must cover the jaw, 70 % of the weigh is on the right leg, you dont tutn your left side of the bidy towards your rival. If you dont go thorough amature boxing for a few years before you hit 18 yo, you will never be like Mike Tyson, you will be like James bone crusher Smith and all those ugly ufc around sport, pub fighter lads with poor technic.

    Squared off balance stance is an "interceptor's" stance. Either you are going to squash their attack and invade them or you are going to off-center and counter. If you have good elbows and control you can definitely used a squared balance stance to attack. But you better be real good. If a guy keeps running away in MMA you might have to learn how to cut him off with square stances because he will keep juggling you left or right and running. Thats my 2 cents.

    Biomechanics: If you stand pigeon-toed you will increase the length of the gluteus maximus and posterior gluteus medius increasing their length-to-strength ratio and dramatically increasing their power when pivoting on either leg (extending the hip) during a punch ....try it and let me know!

    Why do coaches think there's only one way to box? By doing this you're sacrificing lateral movement and you're creating distance between your dominant hand and your opponent. Every style has their advantages and disadvantages.

  • @TheRealNickG
    @TheRealNickG 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are right about the stance but for the wrong reason, my friend. It is about the loss of power and mobility that comes with having the foot forward that way. Basically since their foot it turned the wrong way, they are going to constantly be off balance after every punch that is thrown with any real intention. They can move side to side like a football or basketball player, but that stance seriously compromises the ability to move forward and backward quickly. Usually having someone move around and coaching their gross movements will smooth out deficiencies in the stance as they figure out their footwork and properly transfer power...... Usually.

    Tell it to Mike Tyson 😅... everything has pros and cons, from orthodox stance you have bigger ability to step back, you are smaller target, you have more power in right hand but less in jab and lead hook, while in peekaboo you have almost equal power in both hands, its not only about stance but about style, there is no reason for taller fighter for peekaboo, but that style is designed for shorter fighters.
