Great guide man. Easy to follow and just straight to the point. As a someone who's PC illiterate I can say you're doing the Lord's work 👍🏻
This was a huge help. I feel like this is the absolute correct way to format a hard drive for NTFS as compared to going through the file explorer.
Yeah, there could be other partitions on the drive that use up space. Glad to help.
liked and subscribed, not often the first video i find is so simple yet helpful.
Thank you so much I’ve been trying my hardest and spending too much to find the way for this to work!!!
Glad it helped.
thanks a million, had issues formating to ntsf this week , you helped a lot :)
Glad to help
Thank you for the video, that's what I was doing wrong.. I bought the external drive just to save game clips.. Not in a million years I would have thought to select "used this for media" instead of games.. Cause I use it for games.. Is the curse of detail oriented minds..
Hey I know this is a bit late but what specific hard drive is that you used? Looking to buy one because of the Xbox media update coming soon
Actually used this to format my drive for optimal emulation usage on my Series S. Thanks.
Glad I could help!
I appreciate your time explaining this to us all. Thank you for the help 😁👍
Glad that I could help.
@FourNinjaToads Can you move existing xbox clips over to the harddrive, or is it just what ever you currently capture automatically gets saved to the harddrive?

I did everything you said, but when I choose the hard drive in the Xbox preferences for capture and share, a prompt comes up, telling me I need to format first. I’ve already formatted it, but every time it tells me I need to format it again.
So I wanna know how I can get my Xbox clips from my external hard drive to my phone
I got it formatted correctly, my Xbox recognized it and I selected to store Media, and set it as capture location. But when I tried to transfer my captures on the xbox network it said no device found, check to see if it's connected correctly. I don't get it, any ideas?
Hi and thanks for great video. My question is around videos from external drives. I use the Kodi app on Xbox series s. I run 4k material with Dolby Atmos from an external spinning hard drive connected to Xbox and get stutter sometimes. It’s very little but when it happens it’s irritating. Would you guess that if I exchange that spinning disk to a SSD drive, the possibility of stutter would be less? Any special recommendations for a SSD is such case using only for media via kodi?
I do hear that you get better performance from a solid state drive. The difference between a SSD and an external hard drive is kind of connecting a device directly to your internet with an Ethernet cable as compared to using a wireless connection
Sorry but I have another question, the hard drive's recordings can be copied on to the pc? If I connect the hard drive to the pc will it recognise it?
Thank you for such an easy to follow video for a clueless mother. You just saved our Christmas morning!
Just got the seagate 8tb external hard drive for my Xbox series X for Christmas, I wanted it for all my saved game clips but thought it would still work with media if you chose games and apps 😅 thank you for your help, straight and too the point, easy to do for anyone, just follow his steps! Thanks for the helpful video!
Thank you very much!!! This video was VERY informing and helped me get my Seagate hard drive to record video games!
Glad I could help!
When I go to set the resolution of the recording, I don’t see a 4K option. I have a LG C1 and it’s more than capable of running 4K HDR 120hz. Am I supposed to be running a game that’s in 4K for this option to appear?
THANKS A MILLION BRO!!! Keep up the good work
No problem 👍
It worked! Thanks👍🏾
Hey do you know how to move captures from external hard drive back to internal?
Super useful...THANK YOU
thank you for your tutorial.. Guys follow all the steps and make sure to delete the volumes of the ssd and make it unallocated and follow steps after that and it should work fine!
hi man can you help me with the error message “you cannot play on realms because of how your Microsoft account is set up” because I’ve followed guides online which tell me to set the settings multiplayer and clubs to allow and even after that it still says “you cannot play on realms because of how your microsoft account is set up”. Please help me as the only way I can edit my settings is via the system itself as editing my settings online isn’t a viable option as I’m updating my info and I cannot open the settings page on the Microsoft website. The only way I can access settings is by the console, but it doesn’t seem to work.
How would you go about doing this on your Xbox console? And for some reason every time I plug in my hard drive, the media player app tells me to sign in, so I can’t view my screenshots and clips.
Extremely helpful!
Hey it did not work for me I tried ejecting it, I set the format to NTFS but it still is asking for me to set the format to NTFS. Do you know how I can fix this. I am using windows and followed what you said. However the only thing that was different was that when I openend format it did not give me that prompt that you got at the start that recognizes the disk.
When I plug my hard drive into my Xbox it asks do I want to use it for media or games then when I got to manage storage devices in my settings it’s not there
Do you have a link for the adapter? I only have the adapter card... Thanks
I have a question I had to factory reset my Xbox. And I sighed into my acc and went to sync data for forza 5 and accidentally selected the wrong thing to sync from I needed to press another option and lost all my progress any way to get it back I have a external memory hard drive asweel
Thx for the help bro! Very easy and well explained! Now you have a new subscriber! 🤝
Glad to help.
Thanks bro quick and easy!👌👍
super easy! thanks dude, went through 3 other videos which didnt help at all. Yours was shorter, and easier!
You're welcome!
Does this still work?
I’m thinking of getting a sandisk 128gb, but don’t know if it’ll work or not. Never owned a flash drive before
After I do all your steps can I still store games and apps on my external hard drive?
This was helpful thanks
I dont have a pc I’m using my usb and connecting it to my iPhone, do you know if I can do this on phone?
Just wanted to give you a massive THANK YOU.
Thanks, I appreciate it.
I have a question that no one has answered yet:
I have a NTFS formated, 3.0 External HDD that I use in my computer with a lot of files in there. I even use it on my Xbox One S to watch some movies and TV Shows. (So my Xbox has already recognised it as a media device.) If I set this external HDD (that's already NFTS formatted) to record longer game clips, will my Xbox format it again and I'm gonna lose all of my files?
I just wanna keep all of my files AND still be able to record longer game clips, you know? My external HDD still has free 70gb.
So my Xbox series s doesn't bring up the prompt it just says connected for media and I want to use it to store game what should I do
Thanks so much man. It just one day stopped working. Forgot I had to do all that over again. Stay safe. Stay Epic. You have one Sub Closer to 25k subs.
Appreciate it!
I've got the reverse thing, i cannot turn my SSD into being a Games only storage, it will only be marked as media, what can i do?
Hello I have a question. I'm trying to format my Hard drive but it seems I have 2 partitions on the drive, a system partition which has 200mb or so and the other which has 2.7tb. When I right click the system partition i get no options to format or anything, while I can format the other 2.7tb partition to NTFS. When I try the device in my xbox it tells me that I still need to format to NTFS...so I'm assuming the system partition is causing the problem. What is it that I should do from here? delete both partitions or what? I'm not very computer savvy so I apologize if this is a noob question. Also I'm worried that I will mess up the drive more without any advice. The drive was fine when I first got it but someone told me I should format it to MS DOS so I can access it on my Mac and that got me to where I'm at now. Some help would be greatly appreciated.
Yeha just delete all the partitions.
I found a hdd but it says that hdd support exfat but does not support ntfs so should I buy that for Xbox series s?
Clean and simple thanks man much appreciated
No problem 👍
I did all that and it worked wonderfully for a few months, but now it seems not to be working. When I plug it in there’s no issues. But when I try recording one of two things occur. Either it says starting recording and nothing happens (by that I mean I check the recording and it’s not recording) or it starts recording but when I end the recording there’s no pop up about the clip. This is really annoying me.
So once you do this does the game clips record the audio or no
Hey there! I just saw your video. Got my new external storage drive and wanted it as a game drive storage. At first my xbox series X recognized it as a "media only" storage. However, I tried to format it on my PC. However, since i followed these steps, my xbox doesn't reads at all my external storage. What should I do?
same problem here... did you find solution meanwhile?
I know it’s late but you just press on the game drive and should say format and it should format for games and apps
Thanks for the help I did not know how to do it awsome tips how to do it thanks again 😎
you are welcomed
Hello four ninja toads you made a video 2 years ago I recently watched it it was how to transfer Minecraft worlds to Minecraft preview is there any way to do the opposite transfer worlds from Minecraft preview to regular Minecraft bedrock?
hey i formated my hard dive for multiple xboxs and all my games just dissapeared how do i fix this or is it all gone
Mines an external ssd, that suddenly isnt appearing on the xbox app, whats going on saying it isnt formatted with NFTS
How do I get longer than 30 second in 4k? I'm on Series X and the setting for captures only let's me do 30 secs in 4k?
Hi! and thanks for the video. I'm tying to use a Portable SSD of 16TB to store games in my Xbox. I formatted as NTFS and it only recognize my drive for multimedia. It doesn't appear the pop up to format then for games. As it say in the SSD package the USB is 3.1. Do you know how can I solve this problem? many thanks for all your help. Best
I have the same problem
thank you brother much love! so simple and easy
You're welcome!
So i was trying to figure out how to record 1 hour of game play and for some reason it won't let me says something about must be formatted as nTFS no idea what to do I'm very new to all this
Got a question for you that I’m not sure if you will know how to do? Iv been playing oc games through my Xbox but I can’t game clip anything do you know how I can do that how you have time to see this and I really hope you know how have a good day.
Man, hands down! You are the 🐐! Thank you so much!
Any time!
I got the seagate ssd for my series x but am selling me xbox as I am moving away. I have looked online but cant find a clear answer... How do I wipe it so it can be used by someone else who buys my xbox and uses their account? Is it just formatting it to clear it or what? Im so confused 😅
Thanks for the video. It was alot of help.
Glad to hear it!
I still need help! I formatted the drive to NTSF but it's showing up as EFI when I plug it in and it isn't accepting to be reformatted on the Xbox to accept captures.
Format again but make sure you delete every partition on the drive.
@@FourNinjaToads I did this and it worked!
Great video.Thank you. I subscribed
Thanks for the sub!
It worked. Thanks alot 😊
Glad it worked for you.
Worked like a charm on reformatting, but i have a quick question. I set up everything exact, but it still wont let me record anything longer than 60 seconds. Any way to remedy this?
It won't. Both Microsoft and everyone who's talking about it online seems to be super vague for some reason.
You can not record anything longer than 3 min at 720p, 1 min at 1080p and 30 seconds at 4k. The little text in the Menu that tells you to plug in a USB 3.0 storage to be able to take longer clips, is a straight up lie. You can't take longer clips on xbox series s/x at all. You can ONLY record sessions if you hit the "Start recording" button and let it run.
so essentially an external storage device is useless because who on earth starts a recording session and then goes through the entire 1-5 hour session to find that one 5 minute clip they would have just gotten on a single button press on xbox one, cut it apart, edit it and save it. It literally doesn't do anything at all to extend your storage if you wanna record the last 5 minutes. I wish Microsoft would tell you this before you bought the stick, and i wish people online would specify this because that is the main recording feature everyone uses and for some reason everyone just acts as if that works. forums are an absolute mess because of it.
tldr: You cant take clips longer than 1 min (3min @720p but never settle for that). No matter what you do. your xbox straight up does not support that and there is nothing you can do about it
Do i have to format to ntfs before installing ssd to my One X
If I choose to use it for media will I be unable to store a few cheeky games on there also? 😅
Love your vids nice and easy
Appreciate it.
My external drive says EFI on xbox. Does that matter? Its formatted to NTFS, but still tells me I need to Format. I have a 3.0 usb/ 4tb
why i Can't set It on games and apps? (o have the WD Black D30 1 tera for Xbox serie s) it say that is too slow
Thanks, really helped me!
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the help my storage was filling up, however I noticed you can’t upload clips to the Xbox network?
Please I would like to ask how to change your hard drive from formatted games and app into a normal hard drive because my laptop is not recognizing my hard drive again
Bought 4TB seagate for xbox series x, formatted it for ntsf but series x will not show external drive. It says it’s ready but not showing up in settings inder storage. Help
I would try restarting your console first. Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds.
Hi, I'm a fairly new user to the Xbox ecosystem (more like a hybrid of both Playstation and Xbox)
I was able to follow exactly what you outlined, however when I view my recorded clips, they're out of sync.
By any chance would you have a solution to this problem? I also connected my Xbox to a capture card, but I don't know which is better.
Glad to discover this channel.
Where are you viewing them? Try moving them to one drive from your Xbox and view them on PC and see if it's the same. Capture card is great but you need to remember to capture.

hey if i connect my Xbox app with live ultimate ( i have been paying for 5-7 years ) to my microsoft account will i need to get the PC game pass to get a DLC from a microsoft powered game?
You do not need PC gamepass because you have ultimate. I believe in most cases you would have to purchase any DLC for a game.
Thanks for this very straight forward guide.
You are welcomed. Appreciate it.
Thank you man my hard drive of 4 terabytes couldn’t be used! Got it working from this thank you so much !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad I could help
Literally perfect help thank you
Simple and to the point, gotta love it.
For some reason it only detects my storage as a media device I wanted to use for external games but when I connected the drive it didn't give me the option to format it for games just media. I'm using a Asus tuf gaming a71 with a 2tb m.2 memory
hope this helps troubleshooting your hard rive issues
Aye bro I just bought mine and I was getting pressed cause I couldn’t figure it out , you got me sorted quick fast …. Much appreciated subscribed and liked 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

@four Ninja Toads.....Can you clarify this for me please.....Am I right in saying that we're unable to Partition a 4Tb External HDD to allow us to both Capture Game Clips AND Store our actual games as well !?!?
I've always wanted to be able to Partition my 4Tb HDD to be able to use 2Tb for Game Clips and the other 2Tb for Storing my Games but as far as I'm aware, this is not possible.....Right !?!?
Thanks in Advance for Any Help / Info !!
(EDIT:- Fixed Spelling)
I have tried it and it did not work. I don't know if there is any other way of doing so.
@@FourNinjaToads Yeah, I didn't think it was possible.....Would be nice if we could though !!
Anyway, Thanks for the rapid reply !!
So if you take all the steps to make it available to download clips, is that then the only thing you can store on it?
You won't be able to store games and apps.
Thanks so much bro just starting my TH-cam channel and couldn't figure out how to record 🙌
No problem 👍
I’m trying to format an 18tb hard drive to my Xbox for games and apps I hit format then keep locations and it does nothing
I followed your video to transfer all my game clips and game photos to my external but also want my games and apps on the same external hard drive and I guess you can't do both? Cause come January all my clips and photos are going to be deleted and I don't want that. I can't afford to buy a bigger storage on the one drive to save them. Any way you can please help me?
If I have games on the drive I’m using and change the format will those games stay on the drive or be deleted?
They will be deleted.
@@FourNinjaToads ok thankyou!
Thank you dada. It worked for me 🤗😘
Great 👍
I plugged up an xbox seagate external hard drive to my Seies S but the console doesn't recognize the HD at all. I need the storage to download games on. Is there a solution to this?
Try restarting your console (press and hold the power button for 10 seconds)
If I got a USB drive with music on it four songs will not play what do I do
How do I do this on a Mac Book will it still allow me to do a NTSF file? I have a crucial X8 SSD. Any help would be great.
You need a pc, on Mac you can use bootcamp. There are apps you can use, I've never used that.
Thank you dis helped me I did the same thing but instead for media I used mines for games thank u 🙏
I got a Xbox drive so does the drive is like if you ran out of storage I can use the drive to get more storage please answer thank you very much
Yes but Series X/S games must be played from internal storage or the expansion drive.
Thanks, mate! I think I understand now.
Glad to help!
suddenly when i plug mine in it doesn't show up anymore.
i can't choose it as capture location anymore even though my xbox does recognize it right away when i plug it in.
can you maybe help me out ?
Hmm, try connecting it and restarting your Xbox. (press and hold power for 20 seconds)
Thank you so much
