- Softmod installations for the original Xbox have improved yet again thanks to updates to the Xbox Softmodding Tool now paired with ENDGAME! This modification will not only allow you to preserve your Xbox (allowing you to remove the clock capacitor, backup sensitive files, etc.) but will also unlock access to a whirlwind of upgrades. Some common upgrades being: larger hard drives, emulation, playing your games from the hard drive, custom Dashboards, and much more.
This tutorial will walk through the process of setting up a USB flash drive or Memory Unit for the original Xbox, transferring over the required files, how to launch the softmod installer, and install the softmod. The last steps will also cover EEPROM backup, application installation, and restoring the original Dashboard for further compatibility with Insignia and more.

Good tutorial as always, however if anyone gets stuck on the black screen with the red light, just open and close the disc tray, it will restart the Xbox and then you can access the memory unit/usb again and it should work. Hopefully this helps some people out

So nice to not need to rely on having access to a working DVD drive for this now. Seems like over half of the consoles I save from the wild can’t read any discs at all anymore, and some of those that can sound like they are just barely hanging in there!

No more need to pull the maneuver of knocking on top of a DVD drive to get it to work just long enough to boot a softmod installer!
I just got one last week. Paid a little extra for it and seemed to have lucked out completely. Its a 1.0 board manufactured jan '02, still reads disks perfectly, but the inside was minimally dusty and the clock cap was completely intact... Crazy... Still removed the cap though.
yet another quality original Xbox tutorial, I find it fascinating that this machine is still being tinkered with after all this time, I have have softmodded and hard modded dozens of these fantastic consoles and this just makes it so much easier 👍👍

OG Xbox that I got for super cheap and soft modded is my favourite retro console now, it's awesome. I ended up using a PSP in mass storage mode to transfer the exploit files over...
I come from a place where OG Xbox is not very.. popular, one could say. So finding the specific games for the OG XBOX to softmod it is super hard, especially for newcomers like me, as i recently found and grabbed an og Xbox and i was waiting for a moment like this to come where it becomes more simple, now i just gotta grab the the usb adapter that's needed to do it and oh boy am i excited, plus i'll be able to swap the old HDD for an SSD and play some backups without the feeling that the old HDD might die on me! As always thanks Mario for this amazing video guide! 😊

For anybody having an issue with this. The key to this is patience. It honestly took me 3 and a half hours of trying and retrying, setup up 4 different USB drives, and trying all of them repeatedly. Idk if this helps at all but after each failed attempt, go into the system memory, delete the "unleashx" save, reboot the console, then when you open the USB again, double tap the A button. I'm not sure if the double tap actually does anything but, after trying and trying, the time I double tapped the A button was the only time it worked.
For me the magic trick seemed to be not to follow your instructions :D I only got it working after 1.5 hours of trying when I decided to leave the unleashx file untouched after a failed black screen attempt.
I remember years ago hot swapping IDE Cables between an old AMD PC and the Xbox cuz you had to skirt around the HDD locking.
Still by far the hardest "softmod" I've ever done, so glad to see there are easier ways now cuz that process suucked lol

I had my disc tray drive open and I was IN BLACK SCREEN MODE FOR 10 minute but I close the disc drive it restarted. DID the same attempt before and Now I can go in softmod mode. THANKS!

last month I rushed out to the game store to buy a 2nd copy of mechassult because my copy of splinter cell and mechassult were at my parents house, and I needed to softmod a couple of xbox's. if only I waited a month, lol. This is such an amazing development with Endgame

Wow! This is a big game changer. I can't tell you how many people I've talked to over the years who didn't want to mod their Xboxs because the process was "too much".

The hardest part by far is finding a working USB drive for the original Xbox, but once you have that you're ready to rip.

followed all instruction using usb method. but the soft mods installer wont load. it goes to the black screen but never the option to press A to install

You forgot to make the EEPROM only 1s if I remember is more safest than just have the backup so you and other people that not have the EEPROM backup can change the hard drive easy.
I didn't forget, just times have changed and it's introduced issues for people wanting to get onto Insignia. Changing the key can also break certain saves and will break any installed DLC. Plus if you're already registered on Insignia, you might have a hard time registering again.
Not to say changing the key is bad, but it's more so recommended for people who are aware of what will happen.
for those who don't want to FTP the eeprom you can also create a backup and move it over to your tiny USB drive you used for modding and then back it up on PC/cloud.
You'll probably want to learn how to FTP to move games to your XBOX easier but if you want to use the tools you've already got it's another way to achieve the same thing.

If the softmod itself is active, you could burn off the Extras Disc and use the Upgrade option on there.

Action replay made a device to backup and restore saves on the memory unit. I suppose you could use this to transfer the file as well.
Yep! You can use that with FATXPLORER
Important Tip - I was using the Xbox2HDMI adapter and had the menu set to HD by clicking both sticks and pulling both triggers at the same time. Following the instructions I got the black screen with red led but nothing ever appeared on-screen to continue the process. Turning on the XBOX and then back on I turned OFF the HD menu and put all video settings back to default. Redoing the steps as listed it immediately went to a black screen, red LED light, and then the next softmodding window popped right up. It seems that the softmodding tool is expecting a certain resolution in order to appear.
Just bought a og xbox and a softmod kit, have a rgh but doesn't feel the same, excited to play on the original hardware again.

I saw a tutorial that used an IDE adapter to do the modding (edit files on the HDD) instead of a USB adapter. Would love to see that as I can’t even find USB adapters where I live, and I also have an old, IDE-compatible PC laying around.
You can do that if you've already dumped the EEPROM or if you hotswap. I don't plan to cover that as I'm sure most people won't want to dump their EEPROM using external hardware, and hotswapping to a PC can be a pain.
EDIT: Nevermind. I found a Reddit post that helped with the region and resolution. Had to run the included NKPatcher application and somewhere in there was a thing that to patch the EEPROM to NTSC.
Remains to be seen if the skin will still reset every time :)

Mine doesn't change to NTSC and 720p even though I'm using XBOX2HDMI. It always reverts to PAL when restarting the system to apply changes. The only reason I did this mod was so I could get rid of the interlacing....
It doesn't even remember what skin I've chosen after restart. Always reverts back to the default.

I use a USB 2.0 micro SD card adapter and either a 2gb or 4gb micro SD card with the gameshark USB adapter for OG Xbox

Just did this now but unfortunately keeps switching my DNS to automatic which causes Insignia to not connect. Any fix?

For anyone with a Flipper Zero, you can use the Unleashed firmware's 'USB Mass Storage' tool instead of a small USB drive.
I have seen similar comments, but I am stuck on the black screen after the green orb. It does what the video says and red ring, but just stays on black screen without the menu thing popping up. I am on my 12th try. I have two 256mb USBs and a 512mb. Black screen using the smaller ones and I actually am using the 512mb one I successfully set up Insignia with (using your video), so I know for a fact it works. I saw other comments about changing the AV source working. Have tried it on my 720p monitor and my old CRT with composite cables, no luck. Also made sure my setting were "No" for the other video options, as stated in another comment. Unsure what I am doing wrong or maybe if my Xbox is un-moddable lol.
I have also ran through the process of correctly setting up the USB, per the video, three separate times. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't fudging something on my end as I am def not a pro at this sort of thing.
It sounds like you are doing everything correctly, and my advice to people is always that it might take a few tries.
I was able to softmod using a Philips digital photo frame. It has only 10MB of memory but did the job.

I don't know if anyone else had this issue but I would just get stuck on the orb screen and my USB wouldn't blink like it was being read off of while using controller port 2, had to switch it to port 1 to get it to load properly
this is awesome!! i wish my og xbox wasnt dead because if this was around sooner it probably wouldnt be dead at all, mine died cuz a solder point literally came off during the mod chip instal, i got my dad to try out putting the chip in for me because im not experienced in soldering and once that pad fell off it basically died :( if this was out around then id for sure have a modded xbox lol

Quick question. I'm in PAL region, so on the Video Settings I try to change Video Standard to NTSC and save but when I reboot it reverts back to PAL. Any idea how to make it keep NTSC?
I have a HDMI cable on the way tomorrow so need it ready for some 480/720p! Cheers.
You might have to adjust those video settings in the MS Dashboard as well.
@@MrMario2011 When I save the video settings then go straight into MS Dash it just presents me with my usual PAL settings. No option to change NTSC settings.
When I save the settings then soft restart it's back to PAL again anyway. Kinda stuck right now. Any other ideas?

For upgrading the old Rocky5 Softmod from your old video to the new Rocky5 does one just create ISO from Extras Disc and burn do DVD-R? Then use that to upgrade old to new?
none of the usb drives i had worked, going to try with a old phone maybe that will work, kept getting a message saying my drive was damaged, i should mention i made my own dongle and that may have something to do with it, but if my dongle was messed then i doubt it would pop up saying anything
Edit: my dongle i made was totally fine, found an old flip phone and 2gb sd card kicking around the house and it recongnized it ..

Hey does 720p mode not work on PAL consoles? When I set 720p and restart it just resets the setting. I am using RGB Scart to my OSSC so I don't see why this wouldn't work otherwise.
Do you know if it's possible to on pc, create a HDD for a stock original Xbox that has a bad HDD? I have a photo of the hdd key from insignia.

using the Windows Disk Management tool to create a 512 mb partition on a usb and then make whatever space that you have leftover to be unallocated

Trying to install the soft mod tool extras. I get about 38% transferred but then it stalls.
I am trying to delete saved game files from :E to free up space, but my screen goes black when I try to delete.
Is there a way to delete files through FTP instead of on the Xbox directly to free up space?
Or is there a way to install extras from a USB?
Thank you! This worked for me. I was able to FTP some backup games because my DVD drive doesn't work. I am now having an issue with the softmod not loading past the xbox screen. It just stays black. I can't see it on FTP either. Any suggestions?
It is not loading the dashboard anymore. If you're able to boot games on it, you could try burning off a copy of his Extras Disc DVD and run the Softmod Upgrade/Update package from it?

@@MrMario2011 I was able to get in touch with Rocky and he said holding the Eject button down on the black screen should restart it. It worked!
So I have an old evox install I believe. It’s been over 10 years so I’m foggy on it. But I softmodded way back with splinter cell.

I have an OG memory card to pc adapter for loading saves to the xbox. Confirmed it’s working with that, doing a hybrid of method 1 and method 2 lol

For the memory unit setup. how possible would it be to use XEMU to get the files onto the memory unit instead of using the FTP client? (i have an adapter for the controller to my PC and an unleash-x dashboard for xemu.
If you can hook up your memory unit to your PC you can use FATXPLORER

@@thegravytrain7156 I kept re starting the process by turning off my Xbox and re plugging in the adapter with the flash drive and eventually it worked. Black screen for a little bit then it worked
I used a 4GB thumb drive and it didn’t give me a message, but it did recognize it as a memory unit. I’m assuming that it’ll work for this ?

No matter what I do,I can’t seem to get the IP address to show 0.00.00.0 when connecting my Ethernet to the router which has been recommended vs trying connecting directly to my pc,at one point I’ve been told It simply could be the software endgame bugging. Should I uninstall and try something else? Any tips will help
When I have my Xbox hooked up to my CRT TV with composite cables I never get past the black screen/red ring phase of the softmod, but using an LCD TV and component cables works just fine. Anyone else run into this?
You probably have to go into your video settings and disable the additional resolutions like 720p, 480p, 1080i.

Time to put eeprom reader to rest, and update my knowlege on xbox softmodding :)
If you are cheap like me, you can make usb cable from dead controller and female usb (look for usb externsion cables).
As for usb drives, i only had luck with usb 1 drives (1 or 2gb, can't remeber), couldn't find less than 4gb usb 2.0 (didn't work).
I did that same thing when I picked up softmodding again in college!
Since my dvd drive doesn't work is there a tutorial on how to tsop flash my 1.4 using the rocky 5 extras disc, I'm wanting to upgrade my hard drive but I don't know if the using a 500gb sata hard drive requires lockable drives or if that is no longer valid
You could load the disc the same way I showed in the video.
Hey question so I got the moddong done. When it comes to hotsawpping do I dp that after I open chimp? And I got the new ribbon and all do I change that out after I do all the modding and upgrading hdd? Sorry if it's a stupid question
How’s the reading speed on the USB with this? Is it the same thing where you may have more luck with an HDD like you would with a PS2? (for example, there would be FMV stuttering if you’re using a USB on a SCPH-90000x model, but no stuttering at all if you’re using a HDD/SSD on a fat PS2)

For some reason during the screen calibration stage after I followed the steps in the video it wont let me select yes to 480p and 720p? Does that have something to do with my tv or is there something else I am possibly overlooking?
Can't select those options if you're not using HD ready cables.
The only annoyance that I haven't figured out is how to get the Dash network settings to work with Insignia. If I'm playing the Halo 2 disc I can go to the troubleshooter and it works. If its a copy on my drive, the troubleshooter will exit back into UnleashX but then the settings get switch from Manual to Automatic. Any ideas?

Gonna sound crazy, but you can actually use a PSP in storage mode as a USB drive. My OG Xbox detected it just fine 😂

But also that time loop error which can cause on softmods
So with rocky5 I can safely remove the capacitor?

I followed all the steps on method A and was able to get the soft mod menu working, but not the xbox live to read. Now i'm stuck in the soft mod menu at every bootup of the console and cant seem to go into the original main menu of the xbox anymore nor can I get Xbox live to work when I boot up Halo 2. Is there something I am missing?

Well as a two year og modder some tips just for giggles:
During mods or hot swaps I’ve always had to use OEM controllers, wires, cables, everything has to be OEM 100% of the time in my experience
Hello! I bought a modified Xbox, the seller doesn't know if it has a soldered chip, or a softmod... The thing is, I don't know how to know that either. Where would I have to go into the console to find out? Thank you.
The bios boot up will look different in some way or have some kind of new logo or text if it has a hardmod.
I’m crying. My OG Xbox sit in my room not running for almost a year because I can’t get the correct disc for my 50Hz China version which I thought a European 50Hz. Upon google, I found that only one disc in the entire Xbox library that work with my machine and it’s stupidly hard to find and expensive.

I made it to just after it says talks about backing up the epron- after that it gets stuck in a black screen with a red and green solid light. If i open the tray it blinks green at red, any tips?
