Brendan takes us through the process on how to flash an RX 480 with an RX 580 BIOS. Since AMD released the new RX 580 graphics card, there has been a lot speculation surrounding this and Brendan does his best to cover all which includes a step by step guide on how to flash the RX 480 to an RX 580. In addition to flashing your RX 480 to an RX 580, he also shows you how to modify your memory timings for even more performance.
NOTE: I have decided NOT to upload my modified BIOS file, as it poses some risk that it could brick your GPU. You can create your own by following the guide, though.

So I had a bit of a scare, I have my 6600k near full tilt for overclock at (I lost the lottery..) 4.6 on all cores at 1.38v hitting low 70's. Needs more tweeking for stable 4.7. BUT I did the flash on my MSI 480 8G and it blue screened for the first time on me in months. I thought it was due to the GPU flash, but I thought possibly it was the overclock. So I went in bios and simply dropped my multiplier a couple just to make sure it wasnt that. AND BOOM, booted right into windows, took a second for drivers to hit. GPU-Z now reads my RX 580. CHECK YOUR OVERCLOCKS BEFORE FLASHING EVERYTHING BACK!
I got a xfx rx 480 4gb rs with elpida memory modules. I had to find a specific bios of the 580 to work best. Got one from the unverified section that is a xfx rx 580 4gb bios with a 1100mhz and 1850mhz. Low power draw as well off the bat. I am pleased to say it works better now and i dont crash with my base 480 anymore.
What rx580 bios version did you use?

@John Locke I am unfortunate to say that there is no more bios for this specific card now that I had. My old computer got sold with the new bios cleared to stock and the old bios file download was lost. The specific bios was hard to find. But what you can do is adjust any bios with the specific flash method to 4gb instead of 8gb of the 480 to 580. Might work as that is how found out it works for 4gb too. Just have to tinker with it. But if you screw up it .ight end up being costly.

Thanks man! I have been pondering doing this for like 6 months but other tutorials made it seem like it was a 50/50 chance of bricking your card when it's more like 90/10. It worked for my armor rx 480 8gb oc and im going to jump into a game and see if it runs better. CHEERS
Been there, done that... reverted it back :). I have seen 240-270 W consumption in gaming with the 580 bios (In any case the performance boost was so small). ATI cards are great but they have so many issues with the drivers and the software.....
How do you revert your card back? I am having driver issues since doing this

first attempt got it bricked , thank God I had a back up bios saved and on board graphics ....because I don't have dual bios configuration on my gpu , got stressed but fixed it in the end ! I actually learned from this on how to fix it's basically and how if I want to do it in the future I can ! thanks again =)
The thing is...youre putting much more electricity and heat on a board with a -15% cooling solution. In other words: your gpu will think is a 580 with a giant cooler, which is not, so temps and noise will be much higher, and the PCB and thermal desing will be all time at maximum, risking the card for a long therm use.
That depends entirely on what BIOS you go with. If you go for a BIOS that has very similar clock speeds (for example 1320MHz vs 1350MHz) this will not be the case as power consumption will only go up by 10-20W and you do always have the option of undervolting and/or downclocking with the new BIOS installed while retaining the benefit of lower idle and low usage clocks, voltage, and therefore power consumption vs 400 series.
It also doesn't matter if you water cool it.
Flashing is kinda risky, you should overclock it instead, the performance is more or less the same without the risks of your card stop working or something, it's the same gpu on both cards ( rx 480 and 580 ) so if you make a proper overclock, you could get a 580 performance or even more!
He shows benchmarks for the bios flash vs overclock in the video 9:08. The bios flash is much more effective

Worked for me, but u should have another GPU and 2 PCI-E slots for troubleshooting. I had to try several bios versions. Make sure u are flashing the right card/ slot, before u will have 2 "broken" cards^^

there actually is a NEW ati flash its in the new distro, has the command prompt flash and a windows flash. I used the windows flash.

Well it seems to work 95% bug free.
Only issue i am having is an occasional random "black screen" blink, but it never crashes games or anything.
(im also using freesync monitor. maybe that compounds on bug issues?)
how many grades the temp increase? from the 480 to the 480-580 flash??
Hi, I have a problem. I bought used "rx580nitro+8GB" but I saw my spec and it shows me that is rx480 nitro+8GB OC and by its looks, it is 480 card. I saw that you can flash bios of 480 and make it 580 and I always have problems with my drivers. I wanted to ask what to do to get my GPU to stock rx 480 bios and it to work normally because it is not stable and I use my pc only for work and I need it stable. Thanks!

i did this to my rx 480 8gb reference pcb desighn yes the six pin one and seems to be working fine for now i have a custom artic accelro twin turbo cooler wich is rate for 250wats i believe its been running fine i will update this if anything changes btw i use a 850 wats psu edit i am getting a new card soon but this still works

GTX 460 can't be flashed to anything other than a custom BIOS for that specific card I'm afraid :(
a 560, usually has more shader cores to unlock so it is a worthwhile flash.
This might help some but my XFX RX480 is already done and runs at those speeds and has a Bios switch to use a second Bios already installed at the factory. I was hoping this would help me decide to try a flash but it isn't needed i guess :)

Yes. It will be listed as MSI 580 4GB Armor OC version: 015.050.002.001.000000 speeds 1366 / 1750. I had no problems
Unlocking memory? That's... not possible. The board literally comes with chips that contain no more than 4GB. There is no memory to "unlock". Just higher voltage inputs, clock speeds, and bios tweaks.

What is your budget and what do you intend to do with the computer? You don't need to spend masses of money to acquire better performance - all motherboards are extremely similar and we only show the difference(s) so that we have comparison points. :)

Power Color Radeon Rx 480 8GB Red Devil did not like the flash thanks AMD for dual bios on this card it save my two cards.

It was in the list one was 1380mhz and other was 1425mhz it did not work. and yes was for same model. Red Devil 8GB

I have an XFX RX480 8GB that's only stable while gaming in 720p. Would doing something like this make it able to game at 1080p? Usually the thing that happens when gaming in 1080 is the drivers will crash and ill have to restart the computer because of a black screen. And randomly the screen turns blue.
I know it's been a while since your comment, but you probbably didn't get a new card, taking the GPU situation in the last year into account.
What you described kept happening to me, when I got my rx 480 about a year ago from a ETH farm.
My card had a completely dried out thermal paste, so no matter what i did, every game/benchmark would freeze after a while and either the system would reset (with a short bluescreen) or I would be back at the desktop.
So try opening up your card, cleaning all the accumulated dust and cleaning the old thermal paste and using some premium paste (Noctua NH2/NH1 thermal grizzly kryonaut (Iused this one)). After the repaste, my card was able to run any game at 1440p without a problem (and had comparable clocks/framerate to other xfx 480s).
@@alexandrhruby5386 I figured out the problem for mine, I had to turn down the wattage to like -30 and turn the fan up to high I played in 1080p like a g after that.

Hello, what if after flashing, the unigine heaven crashes and cannot be completed, do i need to reflash it using other bios. I have flashed my MSI rx 480 gaming x with msi rx580 armor bios.
Forgive me if i'm being dumb but can't you just use something like msi afterburner and overclock it instead of flashing the BIOS?
You can, but overclocking won't flash it from an RX480 to RX580. Technically though you are right, you can just overclock the card to the same overclocks (shouldn't be an issue)

As far as I know, it most likely won't work. I wouldn't risk it personally. You can get an "unverified" BIOS from TechPowerUp (link coming ASAP!) to test it with. I wouldn't recommend flashing from an RX 480 4GB to an RX 580 8GB as it may be try to address more memory than is available. That's my theory, and I could be wrong.

OK, This is what happened. After trying everything.. PCIe plug out/in, small GPU in either of the other 2 slots, switching PCIe modes in BIOS (needed to pull out ASUS Strix to do this every time)... What ended up getting me going was something I missed before.. I have VeraCrypt, so it asks for a password after POST, so after rebooting the 10th or 15th time I noticed the light on the keyboard blink, telling me that although there was no display it was still alive.. alive but blind. So I hoped against hope that if I logged in and got into Windows, it would turn on the small card, so I could try and flash the dead ASUS.
So, the card did indeed activate when I got into Windows. Now to flash.. I tried running ATIWinFlash (GUI mode), but it said "Can't read ROM from device" (uh-oh). So, my last prayer in the world, as I had no ideas left, was doing it in DOS... And it worked. I can't express how relieved I am to have this back. I think this post should be pinned to help others, as I seen a few with bricked GPUs. I know I would have liked to read a post like this when I was in a panic. If you can't boot for whatever reason, whether it's like my problem and you can't plug your main card into another slot because of it's dimensions, or the second card just won't start for whatever reason, pay attention to your keyboard and h. drive light, and see if you can log into Windows. Once there, you have a chance.
At this point, I'm going to try and leave this card in and see if watching movies while gaming works any better.

Yes! although, it is recommended for you to uninstall your rx480 drivers and installing rx580 drivers

I tried to flash my XFX RX480 8GB GTR BE with the same 580 card bios, didn't worked. I had some black screens and freeze then blue screen video_tdr_failure. Now I have the stock bios again, should I try others?
nah, probably your card can´t handle the Frecuency of the new bios, and that is going to keep happend with almost any bios because the frecuency is going to be "similar", if you want to keep this then you need pick a compatible bios and edit it, lower frecuency and Vcore, that should work...
With OC I can get stable 1420mhz (stock are 1338), only by using wattman. I tried a Bios with 1360mhz but still didn't worked.
maybe somthing with the Vcore, your gpu may need more V/Mhz than the reference from bios... that happend to me in a r9 290 to 390...
Probably I should try again with power limit +50%, but I'm going to Ryzen soon, don't think there will be any kind of power upgrade with an FX 8320, better wait.

Nope, you can't get more memory out of flashing
Only if you have early versions with Samsung 4gb memory(actual memory 8gb). No need to flash, just edit certain values in the editor. I don't know if you can do both - unlock 8gb + flash 580 bios. I've actually done both, just not at the same time.

Don't bother with this. I just bricked my card from making a small adjustment. Not worth it. Now I can't figure a way to reflash it since I have no video. Only thing I can think of is booting into DOS with another GPU. I have a small NVidia card that'll fit into slot 2, but I can't fit the ASUS card into that slot because I have rigid water and it won't fit. So, for me to have both, I need to have ASUS in slot 1 and the small card in slot 2. No display when I do this. I'll chime back in If I can get it going.

Bruh, my rx 480 bricked itself and because I'm using ryzen, I can't just switch inputs. I had to pull out my old i3 build and now my PC isn't booting correctly :(

I have a Powercolor Red Devil RX 480 and it has a switch, and that switch changes between two bioses. So I just switched it and it worked

I knew there would be someone! It's a program called Wallpaper Engine, available on Steam for only a few bucks. It is in beta (or it was) but it is relatively stable so far.

On my test bench/gamer, I have an SM951 256GB NVMe boot drive and RAID 0 Samsung 850 EVO's for games. That's how, sir. ;)
This will definitely cut the lifespan of your card if not destroy it so if you are just playing games don't do it

No, this only works for 400 series beeing flashed to 500 series, of the same brand and model, due to the physical components beeing exactly the same in number and architecture
