Hi i did this on my rx 480 nitro + OC and immediately after turning on the computer I have a double image and an artifact, does that mean nothing will be done about it?
can confirm, current sapphire and xfx cards will accept this. wondered why they put 8GB chips onboard sold for $200 with only difference being a bios toggling speed and amount available. seems like a waist. hopefully the real solution to this is AMD relaunches this as $200 8GB reference. and aftermarket only gets 8GB models as well for $200-$249. speaking of, i have only seen 8GB aftermarket samples and offerings, so maybe a clue?
Hello boys. I have my new Sapphire Radeon RX 480 NITRO + 4G GDDR5 PCIE-E DUAL HDMI / DVI-D / DP OC DUAL W / BP (UEFI) (11260-02) and when looking in windows change screen resolution and you stop in advanced properties, Video Adapter says. Available Graphics Memory 7936. Dedicated video memory 4096. This rx-480 has chips Hynix according gpu-z. My question is do you can unlock the hidden 4gb is this model with Hynix chips? Thank you.
Look up the model on the invoice for the card they purchased, plus i got my nitro with the 4gb sticker, I haven't been able to confirm my memory modules with memoryinfo however (edit) My apologies
Shane Gardner no , it not means that you have 8gb) I have "Total Available Graphics Memory: 9453 MB" , but my gtx 570 is only 1280) Download msi and watch memory use
I'm getting a sick deal on a 980 right now (same price as 480 8gb). Do you think it is worth getting anything better than a 980 for 1440p gaming? In all games I play, 980 is capable of getting atleast 75fps maxed settings. Please give me your expert advice. Thanks in advance. :)
Most 980s are better that the Rx 480, but there is a huge difference between custom models, (the ASUS gold 980ti is better for gaming than a reference titan x) don't take this advice as if a pro gave it
The MemoryInfo program is showing Memory Vendor Samsung but the Memory name is empty, your article stated it should be 'SAMSUNG 616 / K4G80325FB-HC25'. Does it matter at all?
If it's not reading out the *-HC25 information, you could remove the GPU shroud (not too difficult) and look at the physical chips. That would show the same thing... definitely extra effort to do, though, which is annoying. Not sure if there is another memory info program that would reveal this through software.
I'm so torn :( do I get a gtx 1080, or do I wait for the rumored new Titan card? The rumor could be completely false, but I don't want to buy a 1080 and then watch the new one release.
Well I can tell you that I have 2 GTX 780's and I'm waiting for the new Titan class card, but the caveat is if the card doesn't have HBM2 and has GDDR5X I won't get it and wait for Voltra next year.
Pick a card you like and buy it, or you will be forever waiting for the new one to come out, the new pascal titan will be significantly more expensive than the 1080 so they are not even in the same price range to be considered together. www.digitaltrends.com/computing/titan-pascal-p100-nvidia/ Those are more workstation video cards than gaming video cards anyways, may not have to wait too long, so if you have the paper then wait on a titan, as probably only the AMD rx490 dual gpu would be able to slay it, and for a lot less money too ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Just be careful, AMD will eventually release new drivers that will poll the BIOS against the inbuilt serial number. When that happens your modded 8gb card will get auto-flashed back to 4gb.
could U please make a list of all RX 480 4gb that can be flashed to 8gb. Please I bought already 3 for nothing just to see that those were not able to be flashed to 8GB So I need someone with 100% sure infos. THX 4 all
Any 2017 updates on this? I just ordered a cheap Cyberpower PC with 4G RX480. Also, if card only has 4G physical, will this flash update brick card? Or could I just reflash back to 4G?
are there any of the sapphire nitro cards...mine is early release.. but not the reference card..it has the nitro cooling and backplate, 8pin connector on the side of this one.. no led's, 4gb, that will unlock to 8gb?
yes that's true. didn't even think about that. I'm just remembering the time I had to re-flash the BIOS on my card when I bricked it way back when there weren't igpus
I open the card and it have 8 chips and i change the thermalpaste and use a curve on MSI afterburner because temps area fucking BS.. now i have 72 at max, do you think i can flash it?
By the looks of the comment section , I am still confused. if I do successfully flash it , even if it does have 8 chips, and doesnt work, Can I load the original Image back on to return it to normal ?
That cable managment tho!! Seriously tho man if this shit supposed to be professional or atleast taken seriously in terms if growth potential and sponsorship you might just wanna take the time....smh that ppl have opportunities to do things like this and just waste the true potential. Fundementally sloppy... id really handle that lowkey
I agree that for most people at 1080p 4GB is fine. But because of increasing texture quality and resolution you can find games like Doom that won't let you max out the texture quality unless you have 6GB of VRAM or more. It's nice to be able to do so since as long as you have enough VRAM increasing texture quality has practically zero impact to performance.
No. They did eventually make some models with only 4GB. In fact, I think there were even some that really had only 4GB at launch, but only some of the non-reference models (with stock overclocked GPU speeds). I think it was only cards made in the first couple of months or so which you could flash up from 4GB to 8GB, but I'm just repeating what Iv'e read elsewhere.
There are two versions of the RX 480, a 4GB for $200 and 8GB for $240 MSRP. The memory on the 8GB cards is a little faster as well. Some people who bought a 4GB model noticed that the card had eight 1GB modules on the card and figured out a way to unlock the extra 4GB of memory that had been locked from the factory.
It magically grew 256 new stream processors? The biggest difference between 290/390 and 290x/390x is not Ram or Clock speed its number of stream proccessors. That's what you pay for, not extra ram and clockspeed.
***** in case of stock cards it does if you do some research on some models you'll find that they are identical pub's but with a software block that cuts down access to those streaming processors If you ask me that's lazy on thier side but a great win for me They repeat that mistake every now and then on early mass production to keep up with demands but some keen users out there tear the cooler off and compare the pcb's mip map And surprise surprise you'll find what's hindering that card is not soldered lining blocking access to those extra stream cores but a bios lock Like r9 290 and 290x I was lucky to pick one of the early loud reference models by Msi Here we see the same case again Just solder up the part to reroute the wiring off those extra Vram units But then again some just cheat through which causes these videos to emerge Saved me a 100$ lol thanks AMD
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee arrreeeeee encccccccccccccccccccc a loooooocalizeeeeddd disssssssstt in the spaceetimeeeeeee continumummmm alllll handssss braaaaceee for impaccccccccccctttttt dataaaaa somthing is emeginggggg
No, flashing the bios is either a works or it doesn't. AMD just wanted cards out in retail right away so either 8gb cards got mixed in with 4gb and they just didn't care cause vram is cheap or they didn't have enough 4gb cards to meet quota and filled the difference with 8gb and "locked" it at 4. Only risk you have of bricking the card is if its actually a 4gb model with 4 1gb chips or 8 512mb chips and flash it as an 8gb model anyways. Card freaks out cause it thinks its missing components and congrats you have a paper weight
To do that you would need the bios of an Rx 480 6gb (that doesn't exists) or being a beast of a programer (one that can earn so much money that 50$ become worthless)
There is so much misguided stigma surrounding flashing and bricking. This video follows in this vein and, as a result, it is somewhat inaccurate in describing RX 480 flashing. First, all the reference cards are 8 GB. This has been verified by insider forum members at Overclock.net. So, to correct you, you cannot flash this to get 6/7 GB. However, if it is a 4 GB reference model from XFX, Sapphire or Powercolor, you stand to gain 4 more GB. Those cards are, hardware-wise, the 8 GB models, only flashed to allow 4 GB to be used. Now, you might be saying, this makes no sense at all and is a waste of money for AMD. In response to that statement, I recommend you Google "economies of scale." It is much cheaper to set up tool and die for one card rather than two. Flashing is totally reversible and non-damaging with the RX 480. Unlike other older models of cards in the past, the worst that will happen with the RX 480 is what we call a "soft brick." Yes, if the flash for some reason fails, the card won't operate, but just use a secondary video device, reflash your RX 480 with its original BIOS, and it will be good as new! www.overclock.net/t/1604567/polaris-bios-mod-rx480/160#post_25330263
ALL VERSIONS HAVE 8 MEMORY CHIPS!!!!! You have to check the actual model of the chips to see if they are *8 gigabit chips*, not 8 in quantity!! You seriously need to fix this ASAP because it's dangerous misinformation, you literally just told everyone with a card that has only 4GB physically present that their card is nonetheless unlockable! Think about it for goodness sake, each chip has a 32-bit interface, how could a 256-bit card have less than 8 chips ever?
Try watching the video. We say this almost word for word at 3:10. You should watch the full thing before spreading your own misinformation that attacks our content. The article, posted in comments, the description, the cards, and the video -- for which there is no excuse to missing -- also heavily discusses this... which you clearly failed to read. Cheers.
My card has an sticker that said 4gb on the box. I took it of and it says 8 gb. It must be an 8gb card lol. If its physically a 8gb card how put it the correct warranty void my warranty ?.another thins what's amd position on the matter ?
Technically, flashing the BIOS voids the warranty. There is no disagreement on that point. However, this card, as I explain above, is very easy and SAFE to flash. If anything goes amok, you will happen to soft brick it. This is totally reversible. Use a secondary video device, reflash, rinse, wash and repeat. Balance restored. As for the card and possible warranty work, you can simply reflash it back to the 4 GB reference model and it will make no difference to the card or the manufacturer. The hardware is, chip for chip, identical to the 8 GB reference, making the BIOS interchangeable. www.overclock.net/t/1604567/polaris-bios-mod-rx480/160#post_25330246 www.overclock.net/t/1604567/polaris-bios-mod-rx480/160#post_25331109
well, thats 320 is already the full wage of a low payed person and about the half of a normal wage.. "normal".. a wage which you can live in the capital but shouldn't hope to buy a new rig too soon. What is the situation up there?
Would that mean that the 4gb versions of the 480 are the same as the 8gb versions just with different software designed to lower their performance? because if not then i have no idea how flashing the card would increase its RAM it would need to have the hardware for that to work surely?
+Ayoub El Maroufi I thought so, that seems really dishonest. Plus they had to put more time and effort into making a 2nd set of software for the 4gb version to then go and sell it at a lower cost xD
It is a bit of a lottery right now. The card must physically host the same density memory to achieve 8GB VRAM. Even just having 8 modules does not necessarily mean the card is capable of 8GB, as those modules may be lower density. This is where future manufacturing runs of the 4GB cards may differ from some of the initial run of cards. For the initial run, several consumer reports (and a few from trusted media) showed 4GB cards hosting the same density and # VRAM modules as the 8GB cards, and that those cards could be effectively unlocked. This has happened in past launches and it is a way for manufacturers to diversify the market without potentially losing supply on one card and not the other (issue locks on cards). It is also possible that some of the VRAM failed validation, and so was locked. Hence being somewhat of a lottery and at your own risk.
+Gamers Nexus thanks for the reply I don't think I'll try this myself I'm not the most tech savvy person around Im only curios. I'm only looking at the 480 for a cheap rig for guests ^_^

checked in gpuz for the type of vram my card has it was listed as K4G80325FB_4gb I googled without the _4gb and it took me to samsungs website which said its 8gb 256X32 is it safer to try and flash
Hi i did this on my rx 480 nitro + OC and immediately after turning on the computer I have a double image and an artifact, does that mean nothing will be done about it?
Does this work for the MSI RX 480 Gaming X 4Gb?
@@chava1936 Bump this comment
@@chava1936 Yeah, same here... That's why I said Bump.
can confirm, current sapphire and xfx cards will accept this. wondered why they put 8GB chips onboard sold for $200 with only difference being a bios toggling speed and amount available. seems like a waist. hopefully the real solution to this is AMD relaunches this as $200 8GB reference. and aftermarket only gets 8GB models as well for $200-$249. speaking of, i have only seen 8GB aftermarket samples and offerings, so maybe a clue?
that is why here in germany there is only 8gb version because they know XD all cards are 8gb
@gamers Nexus
how do i check if i have a 8gb ?
Memoryinfo only shows: Vender name - Elpidia & Memory density - 128mx32, any other way (besides opening card)? need to know if I could upgrade my 4bg
what about sapphire rx 470 nitro? will i be able to unlock extra 4gb? ))
can i flash rx 470 8gb to 4gb? --- because i cant find an rx570 bios for my card version.
cheeky little 1060 on the background
Asus strik rx 470 got it used from a person who bought it when it first came out soooo? Maybe?
i have and RX470 ,i wonder if this works with this model.
I can flash my Rx 570 4gb into a 8gb? Also fake, and How i can do it
I have a rx470 would the same procedure apply???
I have a dual bios sapphire nitro rx 480 controlled with a switch can i try to flash one of the bios? or will it automatically flash both of them?
Thank you.
hey bro i have trouble withe my rx 480 and it wont take drivers " haven't done this yet" and i am lost can you plz help me
Can i unlock 8 gb on sapphire nitro+ ?
Can some answer this question?
Metha Zone i think its impossible , first reference 480 partion is gone , only first partion got locked 8 gb on 4 gb version :C Sad

Look up the model on the invoice for the card they purchased, plus i got my nitro with the 4gb sticker, I haven't been able to confirm my memory modules with memoryinfo however
(edit)
My apologies
Gamers Nexus Yea, figured. Well thanks for the reply.
How do I now if the card is capital of doining what your saying it would do?
can i flash my gpus to 8gb? i have shappir blower rx470 4gb.
my vga is hynix memory and memory density : 128MX32.. my vga can upgrade to 8gb?
I'm so torn :( do I get a gtx 1080, or do I wait for the rumored new Titan card? The rumor could be completely false, but I don't want to buy a 1080 and then watch the new one release.
I would just get the 1080 if there is one available at a descent price.
Well I can tell you that I have 2 GTX 780's and I'm waiting for the new Titan class card, but the caveat is if the card doesn't have HBM2 and has GDDR5X I won't get it and wait for Voltra next year.
Pick a card you like and buy it, or you will be forever waiting for the new one to come out, the new pascal titan will be significantly more expensive than the 1080 so they are not even in the same price range to be considered together.
www.digitaltrends.com/computing/titan-pascal-p100-nvidia/
Those are more workstation video cards than gaming video cards anyways, may not have to wait too long, so if you have the paper then wait on a titan, as probably only the AMD rx490 dual gpu would be able to slay it, and for a lot less money too ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
just buy whatever you need, unless you go 4k or above, one 1080 is pretty much powerful enough for anything
Just be careful, AMD will eventually release new drivers that will poll the BIOS against the inbuilt serial number.
When that happens your modded 8gb card will get auto-flashed back to 4gb.
bullshit...unless you have proof....didn't think so
what you card?
I tried this on my xfx 480 4gb and got artifacts id appreciate any help
this worked for me :) didn't really need the extra 4gb but im not going to say no to free shit
What card?
It worked on me but im still guessing if the card now has 7gbps or 8 because
could U please make a list of all RX 480 4gb that can be flashed to 8gb. Please I bought already 3 for nothing just to see that those were not able to be flashed to 8GB
So I need someone with 100% sure infos. THX 4 all
does that still working with new rx 480 4gb cards?
Flashing the new bios rom for the Rx 480 red devil i need the same ati program?
Any 2017 updates on this? I just ordered a cheap Cyberpower PC with 4G RX480. Also, if card only has 4G physical, will this flash update brick card? Or could I just reflash back to 4G?
Any news?
Is there a fkn VBIOS for the reference 480 4gb anywhere?? I can only find the ones for 8gb... any help would be appreciated
Work with rx580 4gb?
are there any of the sapphire nitro cards...mine is early release.. but not the reference card..it has the nitro cooling and backplate, 8pin connector on the side of this one.. no led's, 4gb, that will unlock to 8gb?
Any update?
does this work in 2017?
so if hte mem is samsung, this should work
.......
So if I actually screw this up somehow, can I re-flash the card? Does the term "brick the card" mean that is utterly unfixable?
you would have to have an alternate pci-e card to see the monitor screen and stick the bricked card in a 2nd pci-e slot and re-flash the bios
or any cpu with an igpu and plug the monitor in the mainboard. every i3,5 and i7 or amd A series cpu has that function.
yes that's true. didn't even think about that. I'm just remembering the time I had to re-flash the BIOS on my card when I bricked it way back when there weren't igpus
Also most mother boards for CPUs without igpu have a really basic gpu
What about error 43 and the driver signature requirement from the Win 10 update? How do you get around that?
Hey i dont know if you still need a answer but if you download amd pixel clocker it should fix your problm
Does this work on Gigabyte 480 4gb G1 Gaming??????
update: no id didn't work
It says: SubsystemIDs mismatch
from where extra 4gb will come?
It already have, but amd disable it
Its work on the new rx 480 nitro+ ?
does it work with the msi 480 4 gb?
Rx 460 can be updated to 8 giga not
Can you give download to original rom I can't find it on the internet.
Techpowerup has them
How about the Asus Dual Rx480? can i do this?
I open the card and it have 8 chips and i change the thermalpaste and use a curve on MSI afterburner because temps area fucking BS.. now i have 72 at max, do you think i can flash it?
I have a 480 xfx 4gb and how do i know if I can flash it I ran window diagnostic tool and it said approx. total memory 8119 MB. Idk
8119 MB is literally 8 gigabytes silly dummy if you're too silly to not know that then you should not be flashing bioses on your gpu
By the looks of the comment section , I am still confused. if I do successfully flash it , even if it does have 8 chips, and doesnt work, Can I load the original Image back on to return it to normal ?
Most likely
That cable managment tho!! Seriously tho man if this shit supposed to be professional or atleast taken seriously in terms if growth potential and sponsorship you might just wanna take the time....smh that ppl have opportunities to do things like this and just waste the true potential. Fundementally sloppy... id really handle that lowkey
8gb is too much on that card. 8gb version is meant for crossfire.
But vram is stackable in dx12, so the 480 would have 8-16gb vram, I think it will be limited by memory bandwidth, not raw memory size
this is old but does this work on any rx480 model?
No. They did eventually make some models with only 4GB. In fact, I think there were even some that really had only 4GB at launch, but only some of the non-reference models (with stock overclocked GPU speeds). I think it was only cards made in the first couple of months or so which you could flash up from 4GB to 8GB, but I'm just repeating what Iv'e read elsewhere.
sorry for the stupid question but i tought the RX 480 has standard 8gb of VRAM? so why should i decreased it to 4gb?
therer are 2 models
There are two versions of the RX 480, a 4GB for $200 and 8GB for $240 MSRP. The memory on the 8GB cards is a little faster as well. Some people who bought a 4GB model noticed that the card had eight 1GB modules on the card and figured out a way to unlock the extra 4GB of memory that had been locked from the factory.
ahh okee thanks guys
cool just like my stock r9 290 that turned magically into a 290x
worth every penny I spent
It magically grew 256 new stream processors? The biggest difference between 290/390 and 290x/390x is not Ram or Clock speed its number of stream proccessors. That's what you pay for, not extra ram and clockspeed.
***** in case of stock cards it does if you do some research on some models you'll find that they are identical pub's but with a software block that cuts down access to those streaming processors
If you ask me that's lazy on thier side but a great win for me
They repeat that mistake every now and then on early mass production to keep up with demands but some keen users out there tear the cooler off and compare the pcb's mip map
And surprise surprise you'll find what's hindering that card is not soldered lining blocking access to those extra stream cores but a bios lock
Like r9 290 and 290x I was lucky to pick one of the early loud reference models by Msi
Here we see the same case again
Just solder up the part to reroute the wiring off those extra Vram units
But then again some just cheat through which causes these videos to emerge
Saved me a 100$ lol thanks AMD
+Zero Sami Sounds like you should be thanking MSI not AMD.
+Jon Jacobsen nah I thanked then when I got that card early looks like they returned the favor quick talk about customer satisfaction;)
This shows how much overpriced the cards are. They sell 2 cards one 4gb and 8gb. But in reality it's one card selling for 2 different prices.
What happens if I flash the RX 480 with a GTX 1080 rom? Do I unlock more performance?
You open a rift in the space-time continuum.
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee arrreeeeee encccccccccccccccccccc a loooooocalizeeeeddd disssssssstt in the spaceetimeeeeeee continumummmm alllll handssss braaaaceee for impaccccccccccctttttt dataaaaa somthing is emeginggggg
Anyone tried it on Msi armor rx480 4gb oc ? It has 8 Physical chips
AIB cards in the tumbnail?
Just older cards. RX 480 and some other AMD cards from 300/Fury series.
Any word on AIB release dates?
Could I use this to get 6/7 GB? I don't want to mess up the card too much
No, flashing the bios is either a works or it doesn't.
Unlike other older models of cards in the past, the worst that will happen with the RX 480 is what we call a "soft brick."
Yes, if the flash for some reason fails, the card won't operate, but just use a secondary video device, reflash your RX 480 with its original BIOS, and it will be good as new!
www.overclock.net/t/1604567/polaris-bios-mod-rx480/160#post_25330263
Cheers.
Plz help i flashed my RX 480 xfx 4gb and it said succesfull but when i restarted it gave me a weird screen and couldn't start windows plz help
The hardware is, chip for chip, identical to the 8 GB reference, making the BIOS interchangeable.

my sapphire reference card didn't have the sticker but it still upgraded
in my country (norway) you can only get the 8GB model....1st world problems
and in my country (hungary) it costs about 320 dollars.. thanks, tax.
Gábor Orosz 400 here :'(((((((((((((
well, thats 320 is already the full wage of a low payed person and about the half of a normal wage.. "normal".. a wage which you can live in the capital but shouldn't hope to buy a new rig too soon. What is the situation up there?
Would that mean that the 4gb versions of the 480 are the same as the 8gb versions just with different software designed to lower their performance? because if not then i have no idea how flashing the card would increase its RAM it would need to have the hardware for that to work surely?
rx 480 4gb cards have physically 8gb but they are set to 4gb card
+Gamers Nexus I better spend $30 than risking $200
+Gamers Nexus thanks for the reply I don't think I'll try this myself I'm not the most tech savvy person around Im only curios.
I'm only looking at the 480 for a cheap rig for guests ^_^
OMG ! man !
retailers in my country had 4gb versions for sale until they found out that they are 8gb and put them off sale. i think they downloaded the 8gb software and sold them as 8gb. i dont like when retailers do those things. they only care about money!
I think you mite be right, it would be a huge saving on the retailers end.
I can't find a 4gb model either.
probably voided all the warranties hahhaah
