I did it! It worked! Thank you! The TDP went from 100W stock / 130W overclocked RX480 to 150W stock RX580 The VRAM still doesn't go above 2250 Mhz and core clock holds only up to 1390 instead the 1410 I was getting with RX480 bios but I'm getting higher unigine benchmark score :)
It worked for a week. It was fine at first but than I started getting freezes and even after modifying the bios and underclocking a bit I still couldn't get stability under gaming load or even watching youtube some times so I flashed it back. I will try it again once I get some free time to tinker with it, its just that it froze a few times in the same day while I was working and the simplest thing was to flash it back :D
I don't feel that way about my 8GB RX 480 RS at all. It has performed and held up BETTER than I anticipated and has given me excellent performance across the board in GPU heavy 1080p games. I've been thrilled about it considering I got it for 199 dollars at the end of 2016.
I would suggest you remove all AMD Radeon drivers through DDU utility before flashing the BIOS itself. Once you successfully flashed your BIOS, only then you install the drivers. This is to ensure fresh detection of your new GPU (well that is what the AMD drivers will treat it because your hardware ID is now different from the previous BIOS) . I have done this trick in the past with R9 290 to R9 390, and not removing all drivers prior to flashing new BIOS can cause instabilities in games.
I tried it on my MSI RX480 8g and it worked perfectly. My idle temps are now 5 degrees Celsius lower and the graphics of Witcher 3 got drastically better but not much data has been collected yet, will keep testing. Thanks to you got a free upgrade to RX580 !
The risk is not worth the reward but in the words of the Bard, " A rose by any other name would smell as sweet". Smiles to my working RX 480, "Well done good and faithful servant".
Still using an Asus RX480 4GB model, for 1080P gaming and it still kicks ass. Now I don't play super demanding games (Im old!), Wow, Solasta, PIllars, Frostpunk, FFXIV, Surviving mars, etc... So if you are not into the latest and greatest FPS these things work great! and they also don't serve as additional heating for your home, or jack up your utility bill like some of the newest cards do. Avoiding the circuit breaker poping RTX 4000 series like the plague. Sorry my thread-ripper sucks enough power that I don't want or need one of those.
Did a very similar thing to help make my Vega 56 perform just like (and according to multiple benchmarks I've done), and do better, than a Stock vega 64. A "$200" performance difference crushed by a $0 mod. Also glad that with the Vega 64 bios, I can get my card past 1600Mhz with a core voltage of 1030mv, which is excellent, I could go lower, but I'm content. (I know the opinion on Vega before anyone questions WHY I'm running one, it was just part of a pet project I planned back in January)

Holy crap it worked! Ran into a slight issue. It removed the old bios and then failed, and wouldn't do anything (running as a secondary card). Restarted and then it was able to install the rx 580 bios, even though it couldn't do it right away. Thought I had bricked my card for a moment lol. Thank you for the great information!

its overwriting the original so the presets won't mean anything anymore. once you flashed the card successfully I wouldn't fuck with it anymore or you might have brick it or have to reflash at the very least. I also have this card and in all honesty it SUCKS for overclocking.

Thats because you were very clumsy, and probably did a step wrong while flashing seeing as you manage to actually loose screws and break a motherboard by removing a gpu lol
So funny thing, with my crossfire Fury setup, the slow card actually overclocks itself to the faster card... I have not idea why. Also weird thing, I've ran them at DIFFERENT speeds in crossfire! And it was working fine. This was verified with MSI afterburner, GPU-Z, HW Monitor, AMD Wattman... Game performance it looked like everything was fine without stutters or glitches. How this worked, I don't know. But I do know the slow card will usually overclock itself to the fast card (which could be annoying it doesn't ask first). I think the allowing of different speeds was a sort of glitch since you have to do a particular order of steps for it to happen, and manual overclocking afterwards will set them both to the same. But like an AMD APU paired with an AMD GPU, you don't need the same speeds as far as I'm aware.
SkeletalForce : Actually no, I have 2 different RX-480's, one @1338 MHz and the other @1288 MHz and they both run in their respective clock speeds. Not sure how, but I've monitored with both RTSS and GPUz
IIRC it's totally normal that different clockspeeds work fine. It just gets odd stutters and trouble when the speeds of the two cards are too far away from each other.

Great, now every time i buy a card I have to worry about whether or not it's been flashed
You should've told that you would only get 2fps more at the beginning of the video lol.
that rx480 ships with a 1330mhz bios from the start.
does Vrams types matter? you know like samsung, elpida hynix and such?
if yes, then you missing the most important point here
i had a rx460 and tried to flash the bios,, i wrecked the card and it was my first gpu in 12 years bc i just got back into pc gaming, well now i have a 1060 6 gb and am much happier but if i couldnt of gotten a new card i would have died. that feelingf you get when you fry/wreck a component ughhhh
does anyone else find the sound quality in this video painful or just me?
But you can crossfire a 580 and 480 anyway they will just clock the same as the slowest card
Which is a better buy for Mining and gaming, Gtx 1060 6gb/3gb or Rx 480 4gb/8gb, Im using nicehash btw...
that case is amazing! where do you find that? make and model???
+Mr Pieraldi Phanteks Enthoo Evolv.
I do not think it works, my asus rx 480 4gb is hinix and the option of asus rx 580 4 gb is elpidia
Well, Red Devil 480 is one of the worst VRM design form 480's, I wouldn´t flash a Red Devil...
+Luís Pedro I did and it was fine, even with 50% power limit, but yeah, not a great card.
It will work fine till it pops ^^
+Luís Pedro Truth.
Run furmark and boom
for the crossfire bit, you could crossfire them regardless...
his accent is so good for a south african
wessel breunissen he moved from America to South Africa
can you make a video like this but for the GeForce gtx 1060
or make a video like this that shows how to turn the gtx 1060 to something similar to a 1070
and can I use this method on the 1060 to turn it to something like a 1070
never mind I would rather overclock it to 2200mhz boost
Christian Pervert yeah i figured that out yesterday
but i dont understand how encrypting works and how they do it
Hi, I might be late. But I'm just wondering, if I flash my RX 470 to RX 570 what AMD driver am I gonna use?
your system believes that you have a 570 so you have to download the driver for the 570
My RX480 Gaming X is running 1450 @1.2 volts for 4 months now without a single crash. on STOCK BIOS. very unnessesairy this flashing. DON'T DO THIS KIDS!
Yea, this video led to my RX480 to be bricked, I have no idea what to do with it now, can I get some help on who I can take it to or any options I haven't tried to fix it?
Step on it and scream really loud into the void
what desktop case is that? i love it!
Squad is here
+Vikhyatuh Challat Yeah! Vikhyatuh! Amazing!
Why didn't you mention you can flash an RX 460 to an RX 560 as well?
It seems hella risky but is it weird that I still wanna give it a go?
do not try this you will brick your card ! you must use polaris bios editor to check memory timings first
