Reddit is undoubtedly one of the best places to go for discussion around hobbies and interests, but hot dog, the second you click out of reading about the new Animal Crossing update you find yourself in the middle of a shouting match between a series of the world's most tragic people. While political arguments are fairly harmless, some of these communities, also known as 'subreddits', really push the boundaries on what is morally acceptable, while barely staying within the confines of the law. The Reddit staff have had to make multiple difficult decisions about banning said communities, as no matter how vile these communities are, people will still defend their freedom to share and discuss such topics. In this video, we explore some of the worst, and most controversial subreddits, and the strange and funny stories that came along with them.

r/WatchPeopleDie was a big one you missed off, and would have been the only ban on this list that I didn't agree with, had you included it. It had a pretty tumultuous final year.
r/WatchPeopleDie was a very interesting one that I agree shouldn't have banned, as morbid as the content was, nobody was really glorifying it or taking enjoyment in it. Most of the choices here were for ones that had the most interesting stories, as there are a lot of other subreddits (such as a lot of the very racist ones) that didn't really have anything interesting happen besides them being offensive and getting nuked
@@ManyKudos Thanks for the reply, I'm glad you agree. Honestly that sub was super educational and supportive and nobody was glorifying anything, but more exploring the harsh realities of the world. It was the NZ shooting that was the deathblow for the sub. The mods worked so hard to contain the situation, but people can be awful, and the Reddit admins were having none of it. Such a shame to watch WatchPeopleDie die.

There is a morbid curiosity in everyone of us and personaly, since I have seen my fair share of bodies, I just wanted to see what I was maybe getting deployed into.
I learned shooting the G82 in sniper school and will always remember the Videos of one militian dude getting hit by a .50 cal bullet.

Atleast they were self loathing. I'm sure you've seen those "only high BMI is sexy" videos trending recently. They make pages where "encouraging a morbidly obese person to loose weight" will get you banned from their community.
As a woman who also browsed r/incels out of some sort of morbid curiosity, I heard the killing blow was a rather well-upvoted post where a guy talked about how he wanted to castrate his girlfriend-having roommate, and the comments not only encouraged him but gave him tips. In fact, I think I saw the post myself.

It was ultimately a women who made a post in a different subreddit about SA and r@ping her (as a fetish as I understood) and cross posting it in the incel subreddit. It was reported and the subreddit was finally taken down. The original post existed in it's initial subreddit for a time.
A lot of men r sick
r/incels is one of the reasons why I can't stand how the term is being misused nowadays. Most people really don't know what true incels look like. It's like using the naz word on everyone you don't like. The term eventually loses its meaning.
I was part of a small true incel group on Facebook. I basically tried to share tips on how to gradually improve yourself etc and many would immediately say I was 'coping', block me or report me for being either a woman or a Chad trying to sell them PUA stuff.
I deactivated my account a few weeks later because that toxicity was ruining my perspective on stuff. I joined to have some fun and see their perspective, but then I started to feel bad for the guys. They were so overly frustrated and angry for no logical reason but "me ugly-toxic-uninteresting-aggressive man, why attractive woman doesn't want me". But the more I tried to help the "hardcore" members, the more I realized there was no turning back ("soft" ones were open-minded, tho). These guys are so deep in misogyny, hatred and frustration that even if a perfect looking girl approached them, they would still mess up because of how these guys would look at their girlfriend.
Another important thing is that they also hate MEN WHO GET LAID. They non ironically can't stand them. I'm glad you mentioned such a post when talking about incels. Many people think incels think girlfriend-having dudes are heroes but it's the total opposite. On a hate-scale from 1 to 10, women are a 10 and dudes with GFs are a 9.
I always get called an incel whenever I say "hey, this man is definitely not an incel. Stop overusing this word" when I see internet people calling a guy complaining about his ex or stating his preferences, an incel.

Probably cause it wasn't a toxic community. That sub helped me through some dark times- watching accidents and things to see how easily and quickly you can lose someone, made me appreciate life more. I think a lot of people assumed it was just a bunch of sickos wanting to see messed up things, and sure maybe some were. But overall most people seemed to be compassionate and there for a reminder of their own mortality.
Now trying to find that kind of stuff elsewhere you come across the most disgusting communities I've ever seen, so I just don't anymore. I really do miss that sub. It's fucked up but it helped a lot of people.

Yeah I use reddit because I like the destiny (the game) subreddits like r/destinyfashion but basically everything else sucks hell even those subreddits are toxic as hell. Once I posted a joke about being the first person to open a chest and a shit ton of assholes showed up.

It's pretty funny how quickly the list progresses from "this sub was banned for literal child pornography" to "this sub was banned because the people who use it were mean to someone on a different website, even though they weren't even posting about it here"
I made a point at the start to say how it was ordered chronologically to show how Reddit's content policy got stricter as time went on, but I do agree it seems out of order. If I was ordering it from least to most offensive, it would probably go Shoplifting, Fatpeoplehate, Incels, Creepshots, Jailbait.

I subbed to shoplifting back when it was a thing just to laugh at people pretending to steal stuff. 99% of that shit was stuff people bought and said they stole it was so obvious, that being they said they did have tips and tricks to steal so good for the ban.
I had a shoplifter friend that just casually stole food and drinks from store/cafe near our campus, he literally would just walk in and grab whatever then walk out. It blew my mind how he didn't get caught for 3 years and only stopped when he got a girlfriend lol.
What I'm saying is that percentage is probably lower than you think because I've seen how easily they do it.

The incident that got r/incels banned: one of them posted in a legal advice sub posing as a girl asking if there where a situation where a guy could easily get away with raping her, and made another post on r/incels linking to it, wich had people waiting eagerly and intending to use any answers on the legal advice post as "Advice" or "tips" on how to assault women. the post was linked on r/inceltears for a few days after the r/incels ban before it to was removed.

The funny thing about any fat hate community online is a lot of them are fat (if not morbidly obese) themselves and pretending not to be. It’s the weirdest form of self loathing I’ve seen.
It’s shame they’re not a productive community that makes and shares their own healthy recipes and workout routines online, that stuff honestly helps people, but perhaps that is also a reflection of the fact the people in these communities aren’t all as in shape as they claim.

I always saw the Imgur thing with fatpeoplehate as the last straw. That subreddit as a whole was just a hivemind of projective degeneracy. Their end goal always was to harass people, they just got cocky and outed themselves before the time was right.
It was such a pathetic community, the thing that always stuck with me was an image I saw from that sub where an overweight woman was in the gym working out and in a mirror you see the OP hunched over their phone taking the picture. There was someone working on self improvement and the fatpeoplehate fuckwit would rather spread this persons image for other people to insult than to work out themselves

The freedom of speech argument is actually quite simple. They just need to have a clear set of rules and enforce them transparently. If there are certain types of things they consider morally objectionable, just clearly describe it in a rule. The problem comes when a certain class of people starts banning subs just because they have views contrary to their own personal opinions and are unable to give a real justification for doing so.
I remember the Incel Reddit fondly, only because being called a "sexhaver" as an insult gives me chuckles to this day.

Because of the edgy memes, Reddit decided to ban it out of fear that it would become a place for unironic racism and all that, except the mods for the sub did a pretty solid job at that already and Reddit didn’t ban r/GamersRiseUp which did have tons of unironic racism until much later on

also i think something should be classed CP based on intent
100% they should have gone down from the start, in many places just sharing or taking unauthorized pics of children is a crime, same with creepshots as of late in the UK.
I can understand the law being lenient based on intent (allowing pictures in science textbooks that would be illegal otherwise), but the law should never be more strict based on intent. If the picture would normally be allowed, you can't make it a crime based on intent. That is way too easy for the government to abuse.

However, if you were on subs that were about learning, support, fun etc. then there wasn’t much of a point to you leaving.
