Thx Jacob, brings back memories. And your “downgrading” plea is sooooo true! Anyway, I’ve checked my purchases too and found the second app I ever downloaded on 13 November 2008 was Sniff_Jazzbox. I totally forgot about it, but am still very much into generative music :-) also got mini piano on that day. Basic piano. This app is still available today.
Figure kicks a**! The Reason peeps where so much ahead on ios. Thor synth was mindblowingly good when it was launched too - and still is. It's a shame that Reason has never gotten a foothold on handheld devices. The Reason app is so great, but so underrated. They almost did 'Note' before the Ableton team..

I've downloaded lots of music apps since the start of the AppStore. The biggest single release for me in the early days was the original NanoStudio, by Blip Interactive. I was actually working in a music store at the time and it blew us all away. NanoStudio 2 is on the store but the original is 32bit and needs iOS 10 or earlier. I highly reccomend anyone wanting to see how ground breaking this was to find the youtube channel Blip Interactive, he's only ever uploaded 3 videos, and play the earliest video, from June 2010. In that 4 minute video he builds a full track with NanoStudio 1. NanoStudio had a 16 pad sampler, 4 instances of a great va/wavetable synth with lfo's and modulation, 6 midi track sequencer and automation, effects... it was just amazing, on an iPhone 3GS / iPhone 4 at the time. Anyway I have fond memories of those early iOS music days, was pretty cool. I bought NanoStudio 2 and it's great but I've used it very little, sadly. So many things to play with now.
I love these retrospective videos. I made so many songs in Rhythm Studio, and later made a bunch of songs by using Audio Copy to transfer Figure stems into Hook, a Retronyms app. I always struggled with Audiobus. I tried using third-party solutions to restore Alchemy, but couldn’t do it. In my opinion, the GarageBand version is a poor substitute, mainly due to limited control, and the inability to run it as an AUv3. It never made sense to me that Apple pulled it off of iOS. That was by far the most painful loss I’ve ever suffered, since I was one of those suckers who paid for the IAPs. At least I was able to back up the Windows version.
One that I’ve come back to a few times over the past decade - TweakyBeat! Really nice drum synth that’s fun to play around with and sounds great - seems to have been well looked after up until this point!
The very first music-making app I bought was Little MIDI Machine, which I bought in July 2012. It is no longer available on the App Store, but appears in my Purchases. The next one was Arctic Keys, which is still there. Then came Sunrizer and Thumbjam, both of which I currently use in Cubasis 2.
@@JakobHaq I think I see why, Jakob. I didn't have it currently installed, but when I attempted to reinstall it just now, I got a message that the developer needs to update it for this version (iPadOS 16.1) to work. It gave me the option to either keep it or delete it. I kept it, although I doubt we'll see any update to it.
yeah, thumbjam is a good one. though it has a kind of retro feel to it, but it’s quite a capable piece of software - as a synth and MIDI tool for virtual routing as well. it also is appealing to just mess around in jams with it. had finished several productions with it in the mix within AUM, these two work with each other seamlessly, relatively reliable to use TJ that way, had very few issues with it over the years. not the case with every IAP-based app for sure.
funny, actually i thought i was just getting into music making on ios just now, but watching this video, i realized, that i have creating on ios for a bit more than 10 years now. only not very seriously. i had the original version of loopy, but never really used it much and still don't. i got me a version of "music studio" in 2011, now published by steinberg, but originaly released under a different name. to my knowledge, this was the first complete daw in ios. i mostly used it on my iPad 1 while travelling, and it still works. if i seriously want to produce something, i still prefer a computer with a big screen and some dedicated hardware connected to it, but when travelling or also playing around while relaxing on the sofa, mobile devices are really impressive nowadays. making music with them might also be one of the only uses for old devices, that are technically still like new , but in terms of software as dead as the dinos. in the meanwhile i have an ipad 1&3 lying around and just recently replaced my ipad mini 2 with an ipad 10. so i have 3 outdated devices that are actually still running great, only that there is no real use for them anymore, which is a shame! so i certainly am interested in some information about apps, that still might run on them.
Well as an Old F#ck i used a Mac from day 1….. Exchanging akai sample roms over Carracho and Hot-Line …..( the first p2p program’s) Rebirth and Reason 1 ……the nttx I believe that was the name of the sampler in reason 1 could read akai roms……. So we produced a lot and exported in aiff file that could be readed on the first iPods…… Then we hocked the iPod true a cradle on the pa from the local theater / disco etc. And bloody hell it worked……. most of the time……😝 Nice vid……. I really enjoyed it …..
I bought Cyclop back then… still love it 😍 and the first Magellan synth. Grain science and Mitosynth…. & remember being totally let down by Kong electribe (if only they’d quantised their pitch knob it would’ve been usable)
Hi Jakob. This is great and useful. As someone who's relatively new to IOS music apps, it's good to see which apps are still viable. It's not like the app store really tells you unless there's a helpful review. You've sold me on a couple of these. I'd like to see more, prefer not to wait a year but I can understand your thinking behind doing it yearly.
A good practice when browsing the AppStore is to see when they were lastly released. Either that or use an app-tracking site like synthfrog. Not all apps get listed though and by experience the best way of actually checking is asking others online if an app still works etc. The iPad musician group on Facebook is a good place. There are quite a few iOS music groups over there with dedicated members. Theb you’ve got Audiobus forum too.
@@JakobHaq Didn't know about synthfrog, so cheers for that. Yea, last released and last updated are good indicators. Not touching FB but the Audiobus forum is a good idea. I usually ask in one of Doug's chat streams, good bunch of folks in there who are always helpful. 🙂
So crazy. I used to use the infinite wheel site to have dubby sound effects when i DJ’d. This was around 2002 or something like that. Back then I had to download the entire site to my lap top and the hook the lap top up to the mixer. And voila! I had great dub sound effects 😂
Haha, I think I might have downloaded some of those du games as playable flash files. Those games have me loads of ideas that I then took with me when I started building DIY electronic stuff. 🧡
Rytmik Ultimate was really good and could compose complete songs, was similar to something like SunVox with a UI reminiscent of Egoist. Might still be on desktop and 3DS.
Hey Jakob, thanks for another great video! Gave me some flashbacks. I'm especially sad about Alchemy. I don't use GarageBand a lot on my iPad, mainly AUM. But I use Alchemy in Logic and it is such a powerful synth, I miss it on iOS... I was also a DM1 user back in the day, but I never got DM2 to sound good somehow.
I’ve really tried befriending GarageBand for years but it just isn’t for me, so I never use it. I did go back and try again when they put Alchemy in there but yeah … since I don’t really “jam” with GB, I never use Alchemy either.
Ive said this multiple times, but in all those years since it was pulled from the AppStore I can’t believe no one has developed a similar app as Alchemy. It’d be an instant success! I still miss it so much. 😢
There are a few synths that are just as powerful, but all one would basically need is take something like SynthMaster 2 and give it a UI page that works like the Alchemy one. That 2x4 grid interface is basically a macro controller. Yeah, it’s weird no one has made anything quite like it. So many other apps have “clones” or similar apps made.
Hi Jakob! Very interesting video, as always ;-) . I still enjoy using the Kaossilator and Figure sometimes. They had both a great workflow, specially for iPhones. I see that you're using the Teenage Engineering TX-6. Are you happy of it? Do you plan to do a video about it? I am considering buying one for live use but the price is still making me hesitate.
I was focusing on apps only so it never occurred to me to mention it. 😅 Btw all of my old videos are still right there on the channel apart from a few shitty vlogs that weren’t really related to apps. 👍
My First music app was BeatMaker and I downloaded it in Dec 2010. It is no longer in the app store because it has been replaced with Beatmaker 3. The next one I downloaded was Figure in April 2012. I really really liked this app. It is still in the app store, but it's broken! It's been broken for months, maybe years. You need to log in to use it and even if you successfully log in you get a blank screen. I don't know how you are able to still use it; lucky I guess. I feel like Ampify's Groovebox has a similar vibe, but with more options. I got DM1 in July 2013 and I still use it to this date :-).
I remember logging in when they introduced that login splash screen. I did that on all devices and have never had to do that since. Could be that if I uninstall the app and try to install it, then I might have the same problem. I’ll look into it.
No doubt people have said this already, but in iKaossillator you need to perform the drums (and everything else), otherwise you get the loops the app provides. You certainly can make your own drum track, though you build them from canned sounds (which is what any sample-based app offers, whatever type sequencing or looping it does). Maybe you're misremembering? Check it again - you can play the screen, recording the playing. It can give very good results, and its limitations can be refreshing now and then. Anyway, thanks for the review. It is interesting to see how we did and did not overlap in our choices and usage patterns. I agree about the inadequacy of the current system regarding updates breaking software. But Apple cares about Apple. They have not fixed major issues with the dock and on-screen keyboards (for text and music) for years, with the crappy backup system, with the pretend access to the file system, and so on, despite knowing many customers have problems with these issues. They just want to sell things.
The loops stay in the same Rhythm and build-up no matter how you play them. They’re kinda locked into some sort of sequence. However, you are not entirely wrong because there are two drum banks that allow you to record your own rhythms. But I find that preset clunky. It’s too easy to hit notes you don’t want to, ending up triggering sounds that you didn’t want to use. The drum sound selection It’s very limiting and yeah limitations can be good. But personally I do not find this limitation fun at all. Plus there’s no shuffle/swing control and I need that stuff. So I end up using Figure. It has shuffle/swing, wider drum sound/kit selection and a different more intuitive workflow.
@@JakobHaq I guess I'm saying there is no need to choose between Kaossillator and Figure or any other thing. When the mood strikes, I use an old app, a new app, whatever app. Figure and the KO are just different instruments. I still use both of these apps, though much less than I once did. In each case, that's because development of the app stopped - improvement stopped. I've been as big a fan as you of Figure, maybe even for a few weeks longer. Everything you say about it is true. At the same time, (i)Kaossillator is more flexible than you're now allowing. When I use it, I am not thinking I should have used something else. I can see not using it, with, what, hundreds of apps on our pads, but it's not the case that it's so hard to find notes or that you can't bend it to your will.
Figure was published when they were still known as Propellerhead. They also made Rebirth RB-338 and Thor for iOS. I’ve always loved their products. I was a reason user back in the day when one needed ReWire in order to get sound between Reason and other apps. 😅
I saw your notification on Twitter but your video didn’t come up in my TH-cam notifications, even though I’m subscribed to your channel. I wonder whether the TH-cam gremlins have escaped again?
Have you activated the bell too? TH-cam changed that a few years ago. In the past one just needed to sub and it was good. Now they want people to click the bell too. But sometimes that fails too. I usually just check in on my subscribed tab and all the latest videos from people I subscribe to always pop up there. So far I haven’t missed any videos … I think 😅😅😅
@@JakobHaq I’ve definitely clicked the bell but TH-cam is sometimes a bit like an elderly relative who forgets things. I’ve noticed that they don’t always notify me when other people I follow have uploaded something, so I know that they probably don’t have it in for you. Keep on making great videos and I’ll keep looking out for them.
Hey Haq, I really enjoyed this one, and I say Yes on making this a reoccurring theme. Looking forward to the next one. BTW, Your documentary on the history of IOS music was, for me, as good as any documentary can get and I’ve seen many. Brilliant work! Love what you do!
Alchemy might have been the best app I ever used ..It’s a shame that camel audio has been absorbed by apple ..really a genius app…I’m surprised nobody has ripped it off by now
I don't get it. You don't have the patience to learn the piano, yet you have the patience to dive in all these apps to tell me how i am supposed to use them? Oh well, thanks anyway, your videos are always a delight and very useful
@@JakobHaq GarageBand is... almost great? Like the Mac version is suffers a lot from no midi output, which on the Mac can be explained by it being a 'lite' version of Logic... which has The Environment full of crazy midi manipulation stuff. I wish Apple would make iPad GarageBand more 'Pro' if they aren't going to bring Logic over, but then they're leaving a lot of space for other developers by not doing this, so it's all good I suppose.

the disabling of Music (well any) apps through updates is "expropriation after buying".
Nostalgic and useful video, let’s hope for some recreations!
Thanks Jakob
The very first music-making app I bought was Little MIDI Machine, which I bought in July 2012. It is no longer available on the App Store, but appears in my Purchases. The next one was Arctic Keys, which is still there. Then came Sunrizer and Thumbjam, both of which I currently use in Cubasis 2.
Yeaahhh ThumbJam jam jam jam ……..
I loved that Acrtic Keys synth but it won’t produce sound when I try to use it on my iPad now. 😢
@@kowloonbroadcast Its greatest value now is as a soundbank. I never used it on a "smart phone," because I've never had one. Great rompler, though.
i vote to do it all in one mega video!
iMazing is a great mac os app to back up your ios apps in your mac and load onto a ipad that will support the older app.
funny, actually i thought i was just getting into music making on ios just now, but watching this video, i realized, that i have creating on ios for a bit more than 10 years now. only not very seriously. i had the original version of loopy, but never really used it much and still don't.
i got me a version of "music studio" in 2011, now published by steinberg, but originaly released under a different name. to my knowledge, this was the first complete daw in ios. i mostly used it on my iPad 1 while travelling, and it still works.
if i seriously want to produce something, i still prefer a computer with a big screen and some dedicated hardware connected to it, but when travelling or also playing around while relaxing on the sofa, mobile devices are really impressive nowadays.
making music with them might also be one of the only uses for old devices, that are technically still like new , but in terms of software as dead as the dinos. in the meanwhile i have an ipad 1&3 lying around and just recently replaced my ipad mini 2 with an ipad 10. so i have 3 outdated devices that are actually still running great, only that there is no real use for them anymore, which is a shame!
so i certainly am interested in some information about apps, that still might run on them.
Well as an Old F#ck i used a Mac from day 1…..
Exchanging akai sample roms over Carracho and Hot-Line …..( the first p2p program’s)
Rebirth and Reason 1 ……the nttx I believe that was the name of the sampler in reason 1 could read akai roms…….
So we produced a lot and exported in aiff file that could be readed on the first iPods……
Then we hocked the iPod true a cradle on the pa from the local theater / disco etc.
And bloody hell it worked……. most of the time……😝
Nice vid……. I really enjoyed it …..
Now I feel old; my first device was a 3GS back in 2009…
that’s some nostalgia trip
awesome video
Thank you so much! 👊
I bought Cyclop back then… still love it 😍 and the first Magellan synth. Grain science and Mitosynth…. & remember being totally let down by Kong electribe (if only they’d quantised their pitch knob it would’ve been usable)
NanoStudio actually 🥳
So many other apps have “clones” or similar apps made.
...and yet, it comes with Garageband for iOS and, now, iPadOS.
I remember playing live experimental gigs with Alchemy plugged straight into the live PA back in like 2013/14
@@GaryR55 Not the same unfortunately... The way Alchemy used arpeggio and evolving sounds was much more complicated than in Garageband...
One of my favourite old apps is one called Drone Tone, but it’s gone now. Think my old mini has it still though…
Yep DM1 still 👍
You didn't mention that you were in The Sound Test Room - important piece of history. I still have some of your old videos.

Ohhhhh Z3ta+ and Thor!!!!
I'm a 16 year Reason user and never knew Figure was a Reason Studios product.
For what reason, get it , ha ha
@@KHos73 I'm not a ios user.
Figure was published when they were still known as Propellerhead. They also made Rebirth RB-338 and Thor for iOS. I’ve always loved their products. I was a reason user back in the day when one needed ReWire in order to get sound between Reason and other apps. 😅
Good, I mean, EXELLENT idea.
Thanks for the feedback! 👊👊
@@JakobHaq
I’ve definitely clicked the bell but TH-cam is sometimes a bit like an elderly relative who forgets things. I’ve noticed that they don’t always notify me when other people I follow have uploaded something, so I know that they probably don’t have it in for you. Keep on making great videos and I’ll keep looking out for them.
You might be able to sync w iTunes to get those old apps. I’m kinda curious, but can’t access my laptop these days
I still miss KRFT.
Hey Jakob!! I hope you are doing well man - I miss your live streams!
I am well thank you capn!
Dm-1 awesome!
Aw, thank you so much! 🥰
I wish rebirth is still available!
There is a really good alternative though and that’s Pure Acid! Def check that one out of you haven’t yet! th-cam.com/video/ze30uD-XFA4/w-d-xo.html

It's an actual disaster that rebirth is not available for download.
I like pattering 2

I loved figure and allihoopa. I loved the interaction. Unfortunately
I miss Allihoopa too!
I don't get it. You don't have the patience to learn the piano, yet you have the patience to dive in all these apps to tell me how i am supposed to use them? Oh well, thanks anyway, your videos are always a delight and very useful
iPhone 5S didn’t come out until Sept 2013. You must have had a 5.
Crap, Had to dig out the old box. It was an iPhone 5. 👊
@@JakobHaq I know because I had to wait until getting back from a vacation to upgrade from a 4S to a 5S.
Why have you only got 41.2K subs?
I’m running a channel heavily focused on iOS mobile music and I don’t do videos featuring GarageBand. Im very niche. 😅
How is he getting that liast of purchases over the years? i cant find it anywhere.
Open the “settings app”. Tap on your account, then tap on “purchases” and then “show account”. Log in when prompted with login page. After login scroll down to “purchase history”. In there you’ll find all purchases. You can even setup time periods and what types of purchases you’re looking for.
