I will save some time and say Apple changed the port not because USB-C is superior in sturdiness, is compatible with most modern ports today, or because you can have USB 3 and even thunderbolt transfer speeds (which for some reason Apple decided even with these MUCH faster speeds available with the USB-C technology, they would stick with ANCIENT USB 2.0 speeds). Apple changed the port because the EU essentially told them to do it or don't sell your phones in the EU. Changing the port had nothing to do with improving the phone for the end consumer. Lightning is SLOW, tends to break easily, and is proprietary. Apple would still be using an inferior port if they could because they make a lot of money selling proprietary lightning accessories.
If Apple moved to USB-C via their own will they would of put a USB-3 controller in their A16 so the customers wouldnt be screwed when they moved over. But they didnt because they didnt anticipate moving to C.
@@framedthunder6436 Thats not true USB-3 or compliant with the standard. Lightning is 8 pins, where USB 3 is 9 pins. Official USB 3 support is not possible on lightning, and thats why they never tried to implement it. The iPad needed an adapter to support "USB 3", which only supported specific apple devices. It didnt do USB 3 on anything else, because it cant.
I think apple learned their lesson from the first port transition. As you mentioned, apple introduced lightning as an entirely new connector that no one had at the time. Their old accessories and chargers wouldn’t work. With usb-c, apple rolled that in with the MacBook Air (2015), which did not make up a major portion of their sales. Manufacturers started making usb c accessories and then the industry followed suit on phones/accessories. Now the pain point is that apple should have transitioned the iPhone port a few years ago, rather than users complaining that they didn’t have usbc cords to use with their phones. Everything new has usb c, so users are integrating with an existing environment.
When lightning was introduced, old chargers still worked fine. The charging cable only changed on the iPhone side while the charger still had a regular USB type A socket.
hate to correct you, but the MacBook from 2015 wasn't the Air, but a newer iteration of the standard MacBook. the Air didn't get USB-C support until the 2018 revision, as the previous one still had the original 2010 design with MagSafe
let’s be real the 15 really feels like a (s) version besides the usb c and it’s really reminding me when the iphone 6s got released better camera same design more durable material

I still have a FireWire Dock Connector from the iPod Mini my parents bought the year I was born (04). Haven’t used it, because that mini died when I was like 3, but the USB dock connector is still in my life for my older nostalgia devices. I remember the lightning switch, and finally getting a lightning enabled iPad, it really was cool for some reason.
While this change will cause some headache right now, this is just a short term inconvenience. We’ll be way better off in the long run with this change.

@hungryhungryagro if they were that arrogant they might've done the portless one, but I don't know how'd they sell that to pro-sumers especially with them advertising the 4k 60 fps pro-res
The iPad 3 was the very first iPad I bought. 5 years later got the iPad Pro 9.7 inch. 5 years later again, got the iPad 9th gen and that’s where I am today! Love what I have right now until I’m ready for another one!
Using a 6s in 2024 it’s very frustrating every time my lighting cord gives error “accessory not compatible “ and I have to keep buying a new lighting cord with same issues
But on the plus side to this is that the iPhone 15 users will now have a much more easier way of getting Type-C cables. Due to the fact that type-C has been around for at least 6 years now and Android phones are one of the leading devices to use them. So now when you go over to the charging cable section at your local supermarket you don't need to really look hard enough to find the right cable. Even then you might already have some lying around the house since you already have some other USB-C devices. At this point USB-C is now really becoming the default standard and is also slowly replacing the oldest Type-A.
I’ve been waiting to upgrade. There’s been features that I’ve wanted but I told myself I’m waiting until iPhone get USB-C now I can keep the iPhone 15 for years to come. I can’t wait for it to arrive.
In my opinion the worst malfunction is when the battery fails to recharge. Therefore in my opinion the top priority is repairability. My lightning port wears out and my lightning cable wears out causing the battery to fail to recharge even after battery replacement.
My only gripe about usb is that the female connector is physically more easy to damage than lightning was, a foreign inserted in the port can easily damage it. while it was possible with lightning it was harder to do.
Eh, it’s not a dangerous precedence to let governments say use a common standard and make your products more repairable. It’s protecting the customer, which corporations absolutely will not do. Now if governments took complete control of corporations I’d have something against that. Corporations needs checks and balances, otherwise they will screw us all over.
Exactly. You can never expect corporations to self-regulate despite how much said corporations said they would. Corporations exists for profits not charity work. They are not your BFF and never was.
@@DarkZerol exactly, that’s why it’s good for governments to regulate corporations, we’ve seen time and time again how corporations will dump toxic waste, which then seeps into the ground water, this poisoning people. Corporations will get away with murder if they can, therefore regulation is important.
This is in no way defending Apple, but the reason the 15 and 15 Plus have USB 2.0 because they used the A16 Bionic from last year which does not have the controller on the chip. This is why the 16 and 16 Plus will have it next year.
The difference between the switch to lightning vs type c is that during the 30 pin days, lightning was unheard of at the time so making new accessories was a headache at first. But with the type c switch, everyone knew for years what type c meant and there was plenty of already available compatible devices
Was it the connector or the cable? If it was the cable it could be the silicone insulation on the cable that Apple uses and not the connector itself. USB cables usually are PVC which is quite durable.

And thank god for that. I remember when my Samsung note 3 had a plastic back that allowed you to change your battery whenever you wanted; made it last for about 7 years. The only reason I upgraded was because my charging port finally died on it and I couldn’t get it fixed, so I was forced to upgrade to the Galaxy s20, which has the battery permanently installed inside the phone. I was so pissed off about that and still can’t get over it today

Recieved my 15 pro 3 days ago, after 6 years with the iPhone X. The only downside of USB-C, compared to Lightning, is that i have the feeling that it doesn't feel as "snappy" when plugging the connector into the port. it's not as tactile. it's nice that you don't have to find someone with an iPhone if you want to give your phone a quick charge, though. everything else i've been doing wirelessly for years now.
I've had to replace my iPad 5 times because using non-Apple USB-C to-USB C cables cauaes the device firmware to recognize non-Apple cables and then, over time, the device stops charging.
I still use an iPhone 6s. I recently had the screen repaired and I am not upgrading until it breaks. I hope lightning cables stay easily available if I need a new one
19:37 I feel like I was the only one who thought exactly the same... Literally can't find anyone else on TH-cam either who talks about this. Sometimes I feel like if Apple just removed the charging brick and added a Lightning to USB-C cable without the whole story about it being for the sake of e-waste it would have been more acceptable. Their story about e-waste can thrown completely out the window when new users to the iPhone has buy a charging brick with a USB-C port on the side actually contributing to more e-waste. It was not only an anti-consumer move it was an anti e-waste move, but they pledged to their story about it being for the sake of the environment, which is disgusting.
Great video, I think the iphone 15 lineup is good, however, I currently am using an iphone 14 Promax & plan on keeping it for at least another year. I'm looking forward to the 16 series.
from reviews, they are using a braided cable which is usually thicker and less prone to damage. the plug itself is stupidly easy not to screw it up, where as lightning ports are easily bendable if you accidentally plug it on the wrong side. Also I am sure you have usbc cables lying around. No need to overspend for a proprietary lightning cable.
@@Xanatos0504 that is one of the issues that’s easy fixable but my issue is the connection inside. The phone has a tendency over time to break off and wear out and at that point you’re looking at a new phone. And yes, you can use a USB-C on both sides just as a lightning table.
@@jacoby1234ificationusbC is more durable than you might think. I'm still using a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 which was the first of the Note series to support usbC and that connection still works flawlessly. The only thing is you have to clean the port from time to time.

Exactly why I liked the lightning and not the usb c. Because it waa cool when iPhone introduced to us this reversible charging port. But 2 years later, USB C came out, meh felt like it's just copying lightning
Technically we can't say that the iPhone charging plug was around in 2003 because the IPhone wasn't released until 2007. However, a better title for the video might be "The History of the Apple charging port/cable". The reason I say this is because the cover graphic is sort of "wrong" in that the iPHone did not exist in 2003.
Not only Apple saved money not putting the power brick but since the box is 2.5 - 3 x smaller they are saving a lot of money with shipments too. That was quite a big thing during pandamics when air and sea freights skyrocketed. I were in the business back then, prices were 5 - 6 x higher than before.
Let's not forget that "the new iPad" (iPad 3rd gen) was the reason the ipad 2 didn't get the fancy blur UI effects because the higher resolution meant "the new iPad" had to process 4 times as many pixels, but the jump in processing power wasn't enough for a good experience, thus they never included the real time effect on both the iPad 2 and "the new iPad" Btw, the first iPad mini has the A5X, just like the iPad 2, but it did come with those effects working perfectly fine. You could also jailbreak your iPad 2 to unofficially activate it and it worked fine too
I don’t think Steve Jobs would take to kindly for the USBC port on the iPhone but I love usbc on my iPhone 15 bc I can reverse charge usbc things with my iPhone
Although USB C is definitely an improvement. I’ve found that it’s slightly more annoying to plug the phone in especially at night because you have to be more precise and straight on. With the lightning cable you could just kinda shove it in at any angle and it would line itself up because of the rounded corners and the contacts being on the outside and not the inside
Couldn’t you solve it by not charging overnight and picking up a 30 watt charger? It won’t take long once you’re done cooking or gardening it’s already near full charge.
I still have an 8 Plus, and I’m still pretty happy with it. I don’t need 4 cameras, I like my home button and it’s still fast. I don’t use lightning to charge, I charge wirelessly, but I do use the lightning adapter for headphones.
I wish more people were like you instead of those fools who buy the new phone every year , wasting thousands of dollars and the planet, just to impress the neighbour.
USB 2.0 on iPhone 15. 15 Pro supports 3.0 but the cable shipped with it only supports 2.0, if you want 3.0 speeds then you will need to buy a compatible cable.
@@pepeshadilayThe USB 2.0 vs 3.0 has nothing to do with transfer speed, it is 100% to do with data transfer speeds. Basically, USB 2.0 maxes out at 480Mbps, while USB 2.0 can do 5Gbps, with more advanced versions being able to do 10Gbps, which is used in the iPhone, or even 20Gbps. There's also USB4, which does 20-40Gbps and USB4 Version 2 which goes up to 80Gbps
But yet, Apple was actually smart to produce the Lightning connector, since it was *WAY* more durable than the original 30-pin connector. Apple originally went with USB Type C on their MacBooks and iPad Pros due to the need for higher-speed I/O connectivity; it's only the EU regulation that the iPhone now uses the USB Type C port. By the way, expect the iPhone to be '"thicker" possibly as early as the iPhone 16. Reason: the new EU requirement for easily replaceable battery packs on portable devices, which will require Apple to make the iPhone (and all iPads and MacBook laptops) to be thicker to accommodate the ability to easily swap battery packs like the old Samsung Galaxy SIII and S4 cellphone models.
dang looks like the EU is really cracking down on Apple if thats' the case. Apple has made it a goal to make their smartphones thinner in the past. So if this is the new rule, then yeah Apple is a little down on their luck.

I hear you on the loss of the headphone jack but I always wondered if Apple's consumer research accounted for people like me. For at least a couple of years before they removed the headphone jack I had been using bluetooth. I don't think I ever plugged anything into my iPhone 5S or 6S in the entire time I owned them. Dumping the headphone jack and releasing AirPods just gave me better bluetooth headphones but didn't materially change my experience otherwise. I've always hated wires and use wireless gaming headphones on my PC to this day.

Lighting was able to do usb 3.0 speed, the 2017 I pad pro lighting was 3.0
If Apple moved to USB-C via their own will they would of put a USB-3 controller in their A16 so the customers wouldnt be screwed when they moved over.
USB-c is superior in sturdiness? In your dreams
Argue with me if you can, but I think that between a solid piece of metal and metal with a hollow inside, I know which one is stronger.
The 2018 iPhone XS was probably about the right time for a USB C iPhone
When lightning was introduced, old chargers still worked fine. The charging cable only changed on the iPhone side while the charger still had a regular USB type A socket.
@@Ni5ei And so do they now. You simply use the USB-C to USB-A cable you already have to charge your new phone with your old charger.
I don't think they did. If someone was forced to do something, do you really consider it them "learning their lesson"?
hate to correct you, but the MacBook from 2015 wasn't the Air, but a newer iteration of the standard MacBook. the Air didn't get USB-C support until the 2018 revision, as the previous one still had the original 2010 design with MagSafe

No headache even for apple users, everything else apple makes already had USB-C for like half a decade
@@SidTheGamer0 only reason they made the change, they were forced to make the change. I am pretty sure they would have liked to keep it around to gouge people in buying their overpriced cables.
@hungryhungryagro if they were that arrogant they might've done the portless one, but I don't know how'd they sell that to pro-sumers especially with them advertising the 4k 60 fps pro-res
Remember Apple was part of the team that designed USB C
You would've thought when they switched all of their laptops and iPads to USB-C that they would be desperate to put it on the iPhone

When the EU says that USB-C has to be the charging port of devices, then all companies operating inside the EU Single Market have to abide by that
Watching this while setting up my New iphone 15 Pro max. Well done!
I just gotta say I absolutely love the background synthwave music in all your videos!
These are the type of videos I want to see, so little of people will call Apple out on there BS!
He’s right I was recommended from a friend I didn’t find this on its own
well, Apple did say during the keynote that the lightning will last for one decade. So, wish fulfilled....
So basically The EU forced Apple to switch to USB-C and people don’t like it
In my opinion the worst malfunction is when the battery fails to recharge. Therefore in my opinion the top priority is repairability. My lightning port wears out and my lightning cable wears out causing the battery to fail to recharge even after battery replacement.
How is the antenna band placement on the iphone 4 a quality issue? That was a design choice.
The big difference this time is that a ton of people already have usb c cords. No one had any lightning cords for other devices.
My only gripe about usb is that the female connector is physically more easy to damage than lightning was, a foreign inserted in the port can easily damage it. while it was possible with lightning it was harder to do.
Great and informative and retro video and interesting output, Josh. And hope that Cola is well and dandy xx. 🇬🇧
Depends. Imagine if the EU standerdized on USB A and micro B... C would have takes SOOO much longer to take off.
This is in no way defending Apple, but the reason the 15 and 15 Plus have USB 2.0 because they used the A16 Bionic from last year which does not have the controller on the chip. This is why the 16 and 16 Plus will have it next year.
What’s wrong with defending Apple? It’s ok, you’re allowed to.
Why does the Thumbnail on the left say 2003 when the iPhone Released in 2007?
21:58 what did you do to the odyssey cover art 😭😭
Does anyone know remember how hard the 30 pin connector was to clean? My charger would never fully go in
The difference between the switch to lightning vs type c is that during the 30 pin days, lightning was unheard of at the time so making new accessories was a headache at first. But with the type c switch, everyone knew for years what type c meant and there was plenty of already available compatible devices
I hate how many lightning cables slowly fail over time, whereas I've never had a microUSB or USB-C fail. Lightning just sucked.
Lightning 4-7 year
Was it the connector or the cable? If it was the cable it could be the silicone insulation on the cable that Apple uses and not the connector itself. USB cables usually are PVC which is quite durable.
my 2018 car is equiped with USB ports still gona need lightning to usb for years to come or usb c to a
Yeah usb c to usb a cables are very common and not so expensive
USB C eventually will replace USB A completely......
.it also will replace HDMi eventually also .it is superior to HDMi is Every way ......
USB A shouldn't be a thing besides compatibility. Companies that ship with a brick should just switch to USB C chargers.

As others have said - it’s cuz of the EU. And in a couple years, they will have replaceable batteries because of the EU.
Recieved my 15 pro 3 days ago, after 6 years with the iPhone X.
The only downside of USB-C, compared to Lightning, is that i have the feeling that it doesn't feel as "snappy" when plugging the connector into the port. it's not as tactile.
it's nice that you don't have to find someone with an iPhone if you want to give your phone a quick charge, though. everything else i've been doing wirelessly for years now.
great commentary 🙏
Ahhh yes, USB-C is the "iPhone port", nit like it's been here 8+ years on literally every other device on the planet, truly revolutionary
Liked and commented to maybe help the TH-cam algorithm a bit more. Nice video and some good points about Apple!
I still think that lightning as a connector is sturdier, I’ve never seen them break or bend unlike usb c
I've had to replace my iPad 5 times because using non-Apple USB-C to-USB C cables cauaes the device firmware to recognize non-Apple cables and then, over time, the device stops charging.
“consume content”

I remember the time i upgraded to iOS 7 on the Iphone 4s. Man that slowed it down.
It was not only an anti-consumer move it was an anti e-waste move, but they pledged to their story about it being for the sake of the environment, which is disgusting.
lol the 2023 one isn’t even a brand new cable you could probably use a usb-c cable that is used for a android for the new iPhones!
You can. That’s the point.
In the future they’ll remove Bluetooth and come up with a new wireless solution in order to play hi res lossless audio.
Great video, I think the iphone 15 lineup is good, however, I currently am using an iphone 14 Promax & plan on keeping it for at least another year. I'm looking forward to the 16 series.
30 pin is actually faster then lightning, if it’s used over fire wire
My issue with the usb-c is the durability over time. I just bought the iPhone 14 Pro Max one terabyte back in September.
from reviews, they are using a braided cable which is usually thicker and less prone to damage.
the plug itself is stupidly easy not to screw it up, where as lightning ports are easily bendable if you accidentally plug it on the wrong side.

I just hope that the EU forces Apple to start including the charging bricks in the next iPhone models.
@91Tech, how old were you in 2003? Just wondering lol
24:52 What innovation what we talking about?
lightning cable launch in 2012 till 2023 had USB 2.0 that's 2002 😮 speed with 0 improvement..
Great video
My s23 Ultra is laughing at this... 😂😂😂
Good opinions thanks again
Let's not forget that "the new iPad" (iPad 3rd gen) was the reason the ipad 2 didn't get the fancy blur UI effects because the higher resolution meant "the new iPad" had to process 4 times as many pixels, but the jump in processing power wasn't enough for a good experience, thus they never included the real time effect on both the iPad 2 and "the new iPad"
Btw, the first iPad mini has the A5X, just like the iPad 2, but it did come with those effects working perfectly fine.
Why not make a diferent model for us! 😕
I still have an 8 Plus, and I’m still pretty happy with it. I don’t need 4 cameras, I like my home button and it’s still fast. I don’t use lightning to charge, I charge wirelessly, but I do use the lightning adapter for headphones.

There's also USB4, which does 20-40Gbps and USB4 Version 2 which goes up to 80Gbps
@@zachg9065 Sounds like an Apple thing to do!!! lol
