Aw, thank you! I try my best to make quality stuff for my audience. I don’t always succeed so I’m always humbled by positive feedback. Thank you for watching! 🤍
I’ve been watching your channel for 5 or 6 years and while the iOS music production content was the initial reason, I’ve come to admire and enjoy your thinking, your analysis and your YT style, regardless of the content. There must be days where the burden of making YT videos gets negative. Where do you go from here? What’s next for Jakob?
Thank you, Jakob, for this trip down memory lane. I've had many of the apps you mention and there are actually many more that seem to be lost in time... But that's not to say there are a lot of awesome apps still around to keep us all satisfied 😉
There’s certainly a lot of them being lost. I could probably make another just as long video with some of the apps from 2013 I didn’t mention. But I’m also happy to see that so many are still here and some are even being maintained and or upgraded.
I used to be a member of the ZX Spectrum club. I am still envious of the Commodore SID chip, even though time has passed and everything else has been forgotten, haha! What you did with your Commodore modification is fantastic! Haq, you are the treasure. Great video, please keep them coming! 🤩👍
Enjoyed this look back at 2013. I still have Thor on my iPad. Recently, I have started making sample libraries of the patches I've made, or just love, over the years since I imagine it won't be too long before it's gone forever.
TF7 was a great FM synth - but don’t forget Primal Audio FM4 ! I still haven’t found any that sound quite the same , simultaneously dirty and lush. Kind of like if Arturia iSem were an FM synth. Still works on iPadOS 17, but no longer available on app store :(
You can't buy an old ipad, and visit the store to buy the compatible versions. Apple is trying to force e-waste as opposed to even letting old apps run. I learned the hard way finding mint gen 1 ipad i was stoked to run some old apps like the electribe app, or moog synth. but apple blocks you from doing this in any legitimate way. this frustration actually made me stop using apple products for music due to them wanting to go subscription based. It's like they are trying to trick newer generations into getting less for more. The biggest disappointment tho was Moog switching their filtatron app into a subscription based version. I was stoked about using old iphones and ipads as standalone digital effects for an iphone pedal board, but apple absolutely stands against reusing or repairing their products, so simply I won't use their waste until they fox their store or allow side loading apps and allow progress on their platform.
Great video! I was bummed when Pulse Code Inc, and TF7 went away. Especially TF& that was my favorite. Did you ever get a chance to play with Physynth? That was a great one and had lots of potential. It is very similar to Musyc.
I found a long lost iPad with Rebirth and Nave still in it fully functional, both were free when originally installed. Also when I only had an Atari 520ST I have the original Hammer Head app, very primitive but it was essential for my learning of TR beats.
I'm surprised how there has never been a class action lawsuit against Apple regarding all the lost apps we paid for and cannot redownload again. Meanwhile Sony was planning on dropping some TV shows from their service and people went bananas.
It's kind of a complicated problem because to support old apps forever they would have to make every OS upgrade backwards compatible. Instead They rely on the developers to update the software to resolve every 'breaking change' and developers should know this going in, you sell an app and then you have to continue to support it after developing it but... That's not what actually happens especially because there often isn't much benefit to the developer to do that especially because the cost is so high. apple forces the developers to use the latest Mac and OSX version to develop the apps in xCode and Swift. But the thing is, Android and windows don't usually fall to this issue. For example, I developed an app for Android version 6 in 2015/2016ish and it still works perfectly fine on flagship phones today with no further development on it since then. So the thing is, apple has created a development platform that's a bit too challenging to keep developers interested in. I think a lot of devs build one or two iOS apps and then realize the nonsense requires to keep going and they just say, 'forget this' and move on.
We have to remember even creating a simple app can take hundreds even a thousand or more hours. That's the equivalent of a full time job for half a year, and if you get maybe a few thousand downloads for $5 or $10 each and apple takes roughly 50% of that... Ouch. I think this is why developers move to a subscription model so they can get additional funding to keep working on the app and keep it up to date. (But then as customers we all dislike paying for subscription model) but... It does work to keep devs going.
yeah - apple was hosting the software not writing it and loads of developers eventually realised you can’t maintain an app indefinitely for the 99c you originally paid …
@@jameskerr9509While this is true too, Apple also is a big part of the problem. I completely lost apps like the BassLine 303 emulation, because the developer leaved the platform completely it doesn't even show up in the purchase. After i had to reinstall iOS from a backup it couldn't be signed anymore while it ran perfectly on the same OS Version before. Apple could easily unlink the signing process from the developer accounts for purchases and give a downgrade path. The closed system and signing process regarding iOS and iPadOS itself and also the thirdparty apps makes the iOS / iPadOS platform a unreliable place. Technically the i device became equal to the mac platform, the only problem that iPadOS stays a playground for toys which aren't come close to fully use the potential of an iPad is Apple.
This is a great video and I'm totally with you on Nave and Impaktor! These two are still some of my most used instruments and I have found no newer alternatives. I have all the wavetable synths, many are great but none have that silky but beefy and bright Nave sound. OMG I appreciate your effort to build Impaktor in Drambo!! I tried a bit as well but it just wasn't working.😢
The hardest thing really has been getting the sensitivity of the input to respond like it does in Impaktor. I’m not sure how BeepStreet did it. He got it just right for Impaktor. Irks me that I can’t get close to it, so I get it. It’s really hard.
I have had sooo many music and other apps that I enjoyed in the past on the IOS platform that have died in one form or another. It makes me hesitant to invest in new apps that I may not have access to due to Apple overlord tendencies.
I don't understand why we humour the industry's insistence on using phrases like "purchas an app" or "buy a film" when what you are purchasing or buying is not the app or the film, but a license to use the content. Imagine Yamaha came into my house one night to take away my PSR-36 or my QX5...
Jakob, you sent me through my devices and I found T7 and T8 on my second oldest iPad! And they work! I’ve been on a Facebook group and the discussion was an app originally called Scythe then renamed Wavestorm. Wavestorm is the first wavetable synth I got. I can’t load on my newest iPad, but it works on second oldest iPad. It has lost some of the capabilities, though, weirdly.
Ah, this is one that confuses me a lot. There’s actually been several “Scythe” synthesizers. I have one simply named “Scythe” and it’s still on the AppStore: apps.apple.com/se/app/scythe/id451337446 Do you have a link to an article or similar of the one you’re referencing?
Respect for your lastimg output Jacob! I am looking for a realistic 303 emulation and see that the offerings are not that many on ios…? Do you have any recomendation apart from the usual suspects? I tried pure acid and like the sound but not the interface, Troublemaker i sometimes miss something in the sound, The ik multimedia 303 does not sound good etc etc. any suggestions?
This was interesting. I didn't even realise a lot of these were gone. Thor is still on my iPad. I didn't know Nave was gone... but I was able to re-download it.
Nave I still there on the AppStore. It just hasn’t been updated in a while. But Thor is gone and can’t be downloaded unless you purchased it, in which it can be found in your library. 👍👍
I did not realise most apps you mentioned are gone in the appstore, I still have them installed on my iPad but they won’t run because I updated to iOS 16 a while back. 😢 Think it’s really bad old apps are forever gone, unless someone keeps an old iPad alive.
Jakob Please release an emergency announcement video if/when SAMPLR is removed from the App Store. I’ll need to archive my iPad put it into Airplane mode and never update so I can continue to use SAMPLR.
Hi Jakob - somehow I still have TF7 on my iPad Pro 2018 running IPadOS 17.2 ! - it’s not on my list of installed apps, but it’s on my machine & working. Before upgrading to 17.2 I hadn’t updated the firmware since iPadOS 15 - so maybe that’s why.
Your advice on freezing your device in carbonate is similar to Ken "HiWatt" Marshall ( www.youtube.com/@hiwattmarshall ) does with his production machines when he upgrades. That way he can pull old projects out of the archives and spin them up on the computers they were produced on and they still work.
Aparillo by sugar bytes ,visual planet modulator. Jakob, could you explain what gives a synth a clear good quality sound,ie is it ‘16 bit’ . In comparison to desktop, how do we quantify the sound quality?. 4x oversampling? I don’t know what produces the sound.Analogue modelling? 20hz~20khz. I don’t know the ramifications of 44 or 48k ~that setting inDAWS. The sound card in a pc, or the m2 chip in my iPad?. Happy new year Jakob, you’re an inspiration to us all. Don’t get yourself in trouble with this. The answer could be a hot potatoe. Some bass synths make a buzzing sound which can go from the sublime to the ridiculous, like fizzy pop.low down.
Planetary system in a synth - > Aparillo, but not completely comparable to SpaceWiz I got my first iPad aftert the IAA era but I already miss Thor and Nave, even though I still have them installed. These amazing synths will inevitably disappear at some point 😢
The Aparillo “planetary” thingy is like a mix of SpaceWiz and Reactable-like features. It’s a shame we’ll loose these synths. I wish we had another option than just having to rely on the AppStore.
Are iOS apps doomed to an around 10 year life span? Should we buy iOS apps knowing they will self destruct? With computers there's always some way to run older stuff if you have to, but that can get impractical, and computer plugins are more expensive, with no guarantee about longevity either. I guess all software is time limited?
What's is with this your obsession with cows ? :-D Makes me always laugh when you add some cow-bonus at the end 😀 Btw. this loosing old apps without apparent reason makes me mad too .. IT's the thing also with games not just music apps .. i am pretty pissed of i can't play anymore one of my most favourite apps on iOS aver - Modern Combat 1,2,3,4 and Galaxy on Fire 1,2

Its wild seeing these old clips. The iPad screen looks so low res!
Yeah, some of these clips were limited to 500 pixels. 😂
Great quality content AS ALLWAYS 🍀
Your presentations are the beees knees Jakob. So entertaining.
Means a lot to me that you enjoyed watching the vid! 🤍 Thank you for your support!
Please don’t let Nave slip through the cracks… 🙏
Exactly.
This is a great video. Thanks for putting me wise to Buttersynth and Nimbu.
Propellerheads abandoning iOS was the stupidest move. Some dude created what could have been reason with Caustic. Man did they drop the ball
Thanks. Great video. Many nice app tips.
Excellent program some of these apps I will buy
Thanks to you
I have had sooo many music and other apps that I enjoyed in the past on the IOS platform that have died in one form or another. It makes me hesitant to invest in new apps that I may not have access to due to Apple overlord tendencies.
I’m a big fan of your videos. This has to be your magnum opus. Thanks for the memories. I really miss Thor, in particular 😢
I don't understand why we humour the industry's insistence on using phrases like "purchas an app" or "buy a film" when what you are purchasing or buying is not the app or the film, but a license to use the content. Imagine Yamaha came into my house one night to take away my PSR-36 or my QX5...
ah yes the classic "old baby stole the dog and ran away with notes" problem! hate it when that happens.
In regards to the “not available in your region”, this is not related to where you are but to which county issued the credit card you use to pay.
Another FM alternative is FM7 for Tera Pro (IAP).
That Commodore 64 OK OMG 🤩
How do you make these amazing stylish animation in your in between music sequences? Awesome style.
Nave was one of the first apps I bought when I bought my iPad Pro in late 2020. lol
Nice trip down memory lane
The Factory app I have… I just got mine maybe a month ago if that. So if it’s gone in the App Store it literally just got taken off.
I have one simply named “Scythe” and it’s still on the AppStore: apps.apple.com/se/app/scythe/id451337446
Do you have a link to an article or similar of the one you’re referencing?
True True True! Still hoping for a Borderlands AUV3 someday...
@@JakobHaq I downloaded Nave again. Also, never heard of Yelofier, I just purchased it now. 😁
I want to ask you, have you ever thought of combining different apps/plugins/synths to recreate Figure by Propellerhead and achieved it?
I did not realise most apps you mentioned are gone in the appstore, I still have them installed on my iPad but they won’t run because I updated to iOS 16 a while back. 😢 Think it’s really bad old apps are forever gone, unless someone keeps an old iPad alive.
Jakob
Please release an emergency announcement video if/when SAMPLR is removed from the App Store. I’ll need to archive my iPad put it into Airplane mode and never update so I can continue to use SAMPLR.
I’m on it. I’d hate myself if I lost that one.
@@JakobHaq I appreciate you covering this topic and still advocate and use iOS Music apps…..I’m with you!!
I was able to get Rebirth running on my iPad pro, it's fun for novelty, but there are so many better sounding apps.
Jakob I have Thor fully operational on my IPad 6 look in your purchased library all sorts of wonderful treats in there.
Only one on the list I wish I could get is Reason’s Thor. I’m so mad I didn’t buy it back then.
That’s one of the reasons we need the capability to sideload apps.
These are actually great questions! Thanks for asking them. I’ll ponder them for a bit and see what I come up with. 🤍
Planetary system in a synth - > Aparillo, but not completely comparable to SpaceWiz
I got my first iPad aftert the IAA era but I already miss Thor and Nave, even though I still have them installed.
Much more a Chimp Toon’ fan … 🙉 🎹
Let's go!
No mention of the Synthmaster? It kinda replaces Thor IMOP. It's not perfect, but it can sound very good! Thor is still amazing!
McGiver is doing spring cleaning? :D
Apple brought all those app sounds and ther in logic and garage band especially the 808,909
I lost my app FLUX ( an fx processor akin to the KAOS PAD 3, but edgier ) 😢😓😥😰😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 I don’t know how do a region change hack yet.
Bubble bobble!
the apps probably disappeared due to them not being updated for new IOS operating system
REBIRTH!!!!!!!!!
De-pinch?
What's is with this your obsession with cows ? :-D Makes me always laugh when you add some cow-bonus at the end 😀
Btw. this loosing old apps without apparent reason makes me mad too .. IT's the thing also with games not just music apps .. i am pretty pissed of i can't play anymore one of my most favourite apps on iOS aver - Modern Combat 1,2,3,4 and Galaxy on Fire 1,2
Bring back TF7/TF8
8:54 boom doesn’t work
Shockwave synth hasn’t been updated in 3 years💀 (and it shows, atleast on iPhone 8)
Tye dev (Kai Aras) is still an active developer on the AppStore. I don’t see that synth disappearing anytime soon. 👍
Subscription apps and software by definition should be replace, Immediately!
2023 were very hard times
I love your content. Sweden is great, and as my friend lives in Sweden ... I expect you to be near. I need to meet you. I need Aurora.
