Great video. I bought an iPad in 2019 for surfing on the sofa. Just a couple months later I was bored and I thought aren’t there any apps music making? I looked at the appstore and I thought wow, this is a professional platform for music making. I used Cubase, Rebirth, Reason and Hammerhead on a PC in the early 2000s but then I got married and had kids and I lost my spare time. Fast fwd to 2019, my kids are big and I have time for a hobby again, the music apps on my iPad sucked me back into music making. I really enjoy it a lot. Looking at your timeline music making on the iPad came a long way. There are still many features that hadn’t made their way from the desktop world to iOS but I love the direct interaction and the creative workflows on the iPad. It gets better and better virtually every day. Great times being ahead of us .
Yeah, sometimes I look at a several thousand dollar vintage synth (like the Juno 106) or modern day equivelants like the Behringer Deepmind ($1000), Roland JU-06 ($700) and the look at my bog standard 2018 iPad, which is running a pixel-perfect replica of a Roland Juno for $20 (TAL UNO-LX) with minimal latency. The touchscreen matches well with a slider type interface. Oh yeah, I owned a Juno 106 back in the day, this thing gives me goosebumps, its so accurate! It is also available as a VST.
What a great contribution to history in this space, Jakob. As a relative newcomer to IOS music production, a lot of this was really interesting to learn. Well done.

this is a really great overview! as someone who went in and out on ios music throughout nearly this whole timeline, it's so cool to see the whole thing laid out
Excellent video, Jakob. Can't imagine the amount of time it took to research and gather all these pieces together. Also, great call on the music at the beginning. Helped set the stage for the content.
I've been thinking about getting an iPad for music making purposes and this video helped catch me up to speed. Would love more beginner friendly videos!

Great overview! You gave an video example of Korg Gadget yet it should be a highlight along with the various other Korg apps. I Hope Apple has a Logic iOS or a more midi feature rich GarageBand iOS coming for its new iPads. Cheers
I still hope they return the 3.5 jack, the main reason I'm still on the 2017 12.9" (although I very like the usb-c which does not require additional power for focusrite 2x2 and other devices), and they removed it from the mini 9 that was very sad
As much as I agree with you on the 3.5mm audio jack in IOS devices, Apple will not go back and sunk and destroyed that bridge years ago. Audio jack dongles are annoying yet a solution for our niche audio needs. Isn’t it hypocritical for Apple claiming to care about Clinate change and call itself Eco friendly while eliminating the 3.5mm audio jack forcing us to go out to buy a dongle or resort to power hungry & disposable Bluetooth headphones/EarPods that won’t last as long as wired headphones!
@@autecheee never say never! After all, Apple just brought ports and the sd card reader back to Macbook Pros! They might finally listen and bring back the headphone jack too. I’m still on the 2017 iPad as well. Not a great jack by the way, the auto detection on the microphone part of the jack is flakey at best 🙄 and the only really small audio interfaces kinda sound crappy - iRig?! Ugh.
thanks for the research, Jakob! It’s really a good time in general to have this kind of a flashback to the history of the music making software developement timeline. Also special thanks for mentioning Albarn’s one-of-a-kind for its time production experience and very inspiring one for many
Very excited to get into iPad music making! I plan on having integrated into my guitar rig hooked up with my neural DSP quad cortex. I’ve never had an ipad before and am not sure if I should buy on now or wait for the next one to come out though. Love the video!!
I can’t believe I missed this epic odyssey!! To think that it’s been over ten years makes me feel old. 😃 But I still miss Alchemy so much. And it’s strange that no one has launched a similar app since. When it comes to the first daw, there was a brilliant chap from Wales who made the most beautiful music on that app. His name was Michael W!! And lastly, you know which app I think you missed. 😜😜😜
Thank you for documenting the history of iOS music and music technology in general. The mass availability & accessibility of music-making tools in iOS is, in my opinion, one of the most important stories of music to be told of our time period. The amount of incredible, professional apps that have come out in the last 3 years alone is mind boggling. Thank you!
Awesome! Got into IOS around 2012-2013 I think. My father gave me his iphone 4 and started from there. Fun times! Quite a coincidence I just stumbled on this video cuz I've been firing my old iphone 4 and I just saw this. Great timing.
it's amazing timeline, thanks for doing it ! great job ! Even through recently i shifted to full hw-only production enviroment - hell i spend 11 years with iOS and it were great years, made a tons of music, thanks for reactivating lot of memories :)
Great overview, I got into the iPad music making around 2018. A year before I had bought a Yamaha reface DX and discovered there where some handy apps for managing patches for it. I soon discovered the Fairlight CMI pro and the Korg apps since then. For me Korg Gadget and Steinberg Cubasis form a powerful combination. I also use the Cubasis import feature in Cubase a lot. Very convenient to start a mix on the iPad and finish it on the PC with the desktop version of Cubase.
Man. So true. If only Apple could walk the walk like they talk the talk. We need ports! We need access to all that hidden RAM! Sick of maxing out the capacities of the iPad “pro” with my WAV based tracks. “Optimizing performance” in Logic “pro”? Ugh. Inches away from biting the bullet and joining the laptop masses.
Great job Jakob!! I didn’t begin my journey into the digital music scene on iPad until late in 2019, so this was very informative. You make great videos btw, so keep at it!! Peace!
Great video timeline and explanation! I've only been doing ipad music production for close to 2 years now. So this gives me a good grasp on the pains and gains of the iOS production platform. Well done! 👏👏
Hi Jakob, wow fantastic time line run down . Thank you for that. For me when it comes to iPad production it was two big things. The introduction of cubasis. Now don’t get me wrong when I say this next part, but a lot of the synths did and do sound very good, but for me I was always looking for a synth that could produce sounds similar or the same as some of the productions that hands Zimmer was doing. That happened when synthmaster 1 came in. At this point for me that’s when everything started to change, Then of course we had the arrival of synthmaster 2.
Fantastic video! I have over 2353 apps on my iPad Pros plus a server with $13mil of my research & back catalog. Going from a million dollar studio to an iPad, I believe most users are not realizing their tablets’ true capabilities. Your channel (and ‘Adam Hardyman iOS MM’) truly help me with my purchases. Keep up the great work!
Great topic, it’s been a fun, interesting, amazing learning experience for me. I couldn’t imagine my life without ios music making. It opens up a world that was previously out of reach for me due to financial and space limitations. I’ve learned so much, and continue to get better every day. It’s a positive, productive hobby, or a way to make a living, and everything in between. Long live Michael Tyson. So when was the first sound test room video released, back in the beginning when the trio was together? First instructional, or demonstration content posted is important because it creates the foundation of an online community. Same could be said for the AB forum, and maybe a few other blogs/forums that helped people connect, learn and help each other.
Awesome video. 😀 I remember seeing reactable and thinking this is perfect for the iPad. Also I used beatmaker in the past as shown in the beginning of this video. Didn’t remember the name and only now realized that beatmaker 3 might be an evolution of that initial app
It was officially included in iOS 4.2.1 but I believe it was unofficially (or accidentally) included in iPhoneOS 3.2.2 for the first iPad. From memory, Molten Drum Machine, FunkBox and StepPolyArp where the first apps to support CoreMIDI, though I don't recall which was released first. Molten with MIDI was released Dec 18 2010.
I think you did an excellent job getting down the basic skeleton of Apple mobile device development. You neglected to add the split between iOS, iPadOS, and mobile apps being able to run on M1 macOS. I think there’s been a significant development of the ability to do music videos that has occurred on these devices that could be a video all its own. There have been waves of development. Dongles are us and hardware integration, the rise of the synths, groove boxes, modulars, DAWS, FX apps, the great migration from desktop to mobile devices, MIDI sequencing and manipulation apps- could all have a treatment similar to the basic skeleton video you’ve already done. It would also be nice to have videos on topics that are underserved such as why Apple hasn’t supported the web MIDI standard yet on their mobile devices and the consequences of that. One very black day in history that you didn’t cover was when Apple stopped the payments for Affiliate Links- without this initial support many of the apps and the mobile music making community would have been much slower in developing.
Great timeline Jacob. Personally I’m looking forward to Michael finally finishing the Loopy HD successor that’s in beta at the moment. I mean… clearly the side projects have been great, but I wanna see his masterpiece :)
At this point on, I still use Auxy, Medly & Beatware along with Reason Compact and from there it was a real game changer throughout the years of audio production! 😎👍
I love the constant release of new apps BUT I HATE that both iOS and many devs are abandoning too soon cool apps and also iOS makes them unusable with every update, I know some devs don't have time to keep updating older apps but iOS should NOT make them unusable, I don't want to be buying new ipads every 3 years and I don't want my gear to become obsolete so soon, That's why I still love Windows as I can still run music programs and synths that are more than 10 years old on windows 10
Lovely video, Jakob. I was looking for Thor synthesizer in the App Store but unfortunately it seemed to be discontinued 🙁 The reason why I want this synth for my iPad Pro is that one of my cute guinea pigs is called Thor. He’s gorgeous. Cute. And also a big guinea pig (around 3.6 pounds!!). I’m drifting away…. Sorry.
@@JakobHaq So that’s why I couldn’t find it in the App Store! It’s a shame for sure. I know you talk to a lot of software developers and do you perhaps know why the developer discontinued Thor synthesizer for iPad? If you don’t know, that’s also fine. Thanks for your reply, Jakob and I hope you’re safe and healthy.

2008-2012 was most interesting era for me. I think overall pre-audiobus era is underrated in memory of people.
These are the days of miracle and wonder!
Yeah, I wonder what’s next. In all honesty I just want to see some pro features being put into iOS DAWs.

This is a great run through, very interesting. Glad you took the time to document this 🙏🤘🏼
Awesome job Jakob! I would like to see a timeline like this for Gadget.
Great overview.
As well as some of the early classics mentioned above (sunvox, jasuto, geoshred), it might be good to have some mention of the early midi sequencers. I loved Genome, and am still quite sad that little midi machine has gone.
Jordan Rudess' early support of the platform with his apps like morphwiz and samplewiz and his enthusiasm about new apps.
Some of the great synth emulations like korg IMS20 and IVCS-3, Vogel CMI, Model -D, etc
There were some really neat phone size apps like ocarina and especially thumbjam.
iPad was also great as a programmable control surface with Lemur or Midi Designer.
And as someone else mentioned some of the hardward integration. I had an Akai Synthstation 25 for the phone/ipod touch. And an early 30pin to midi controller for interfacing with external synths.
Great overview and HUGE amount of work )) the only missing thing I think worth mentioning are hardware interfaces for iOS devices (like focusrite iTrack dock, iRigs etc)
And One fun fact - when first IPad was introduced, Steve Jobs himself played on an iAccordeon )))
I had to leave another comment because this was such an amazing piece of work, your attention to detail and the visuals were as good as any, I would say Documentary.
Top Notch! I will watch this many times and recommend it to everyone in the iOS music game. Awesome!!!

Brilliant…Thanks. ✊🍷🎩🎩🎩
Super video
Awesome video. 😀
I remember seeing reactable and thinking this is perfect for the iPad.
Also I used beatmaker in the past as shown in the beginning of this video. Didn’t remember the name and only now realized that beatmaker 3 might be an evolution of that initial app
Nice Video! NanoStudio, Fairlight (Peter Vogel CMI) and Synclavier should be mentioned. Thank you very much.
Great video!
Thank you! ☺️
Another milestone was the ipad3 being 24bit audio capable for the first time
That would have been a great mile-stone to put in there. 👍
Thanks Jakob, this is flipping awesome! 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you for watching! 👊
Thank you!
Mike Tyson the boxer made apple apps. So cool man.
When did core midi and virtual midi become available?
It was officially included in iOS 4.2.1 but I believe it was unofficially (or accidentally) included in iPhoneOS 3.2.2 for the first iPad. From memory, Molten Drum Machine, FunkBox and StepPolyArp where the first apps to support CoreMIDI, though I don't recall which was released first. Molten with MIDI was released Dec 18 2010.
Crap, that would have been great on this timeline.
Grate video ThankYou
Thanks a lot!..it was a nice to remember it..a disappointing moments too..a lot of them..but: now we have AUM and Drambo!..so life is much smoother..)
Jakob I'm just now watching this video and haven't finished the whole thing but you better include yourself, doug and others ;)
Great timeline Jacob. Personally I’m looking forward to Michael finally finishing the Loopy HD successor that’s in beta at the moment. I mean… clearly the side projects have been great, but I wanna see his masterpiece :)
It’s going to be glorious when the new loopy gets out. He’s been working on it for so long and it’s insane what he’s done with it.
Fantastic!
At this point on, I still use Auxy, Medly & Beatware along with Reason Compact and from there it was a real game changer throughout the years of audio production! 😎👍
I love the constant release of new apps BUT I HATE that both iOS and many devs are abandoning too soon cool apps and also iOS makes them unusable with every update, I know some devs don't have time to keep updating older apps but iOS should NOT make them unusable, I don't want to be buying new ipads every 3 years and I don't want my gear to become obsolete so soon, That's why I still love Windows as I can still run music programs and synths that are more than 10 years old on windows 10
this, so many times, this! and yeah this is why i still have ios10 on my main
Wow AK in 2014? Didn’t realize it was so early.
Sorry.
Yeah it was removed some time ago, maybe at the beginning of the year (2021). It’s a shame. I don’t think it’s coming back either.
2010 was when I first started and it was the Gorillaz that got me interested. I was still using MacBook and Logic though.
Where is MiRack???
korg gadget is an important date for me
