  • Michigan vs Michigan State was the game of the day, the game of the week, possibly the game of the year, and also the site of the Late Kick Renaissance Tour for week 9. On Late Kick Live Ep 198 Josh Pate looked back on a wild Saturday in East Lansing and discussed the Spartans storming back from a 30-14 deficit to take down Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines 37-33 before a rabid crowd in Spartan Stadium. With Mel Tucker securing the biggest win of his career and one of the biggest wins in program history, how real does the CFB Playoff become now for Michigan State? Can Michigan regroup with several major goals still in front of them? Where does this rank among the games we've seen on the Renaissance Tour so far this season? How does this impact the legacy of each coach? Let us know what you think in the comments below and be sure to SUBSCRIBE to the channel and CLICK THE BELL for notifications as we bring you multiple live shows per week!

    That mark Dantonio scene is huge. He's the reason this rivalry has been revitalized. He took our program from a period of great despair and built it into a powerhouse. He's the reason that game meant so much. He put MSU football back on the map. Sure he didn't have the magic in the end as he did in the beginning. But thats still the house mark built.

      As a former player from the early 1980s, I totally agree. I get so angry hearing Spartan fans talking trash about Dantonio. Go back and look at his record and the prior coaches. We were basically in the gutter before he came along. Nick Saban was the last good coach we had before Dantonio and we are truly blessed that he brought the program back to where it was in the 60s with Duffy Daugherty. Go Green!

      @@katsura1982 I obviously didn't say anything about a setup. The officiating was poor, and it benefited Sparty more than it hurt them, but they won fair and square. • @ericriffel8954
      @ericriffel8954 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr. Mojo Risin That is such an absurd statement. Year after year Michigan has to start unranked or ranked in the bottom 5 of the top 25 and work their way up. Penn State is still ranked with 3 losses. Michigan has solid wins against Washington, Wisconsin and Nebraska (the latter 2 on the road). These teams are all having off years, but are hardly High School programs. If Nebraska gives the Pukeyes a solid game, no one will be devaluing the win for Ohio State, and they will continue to be overrated.

    • @tremoore61
      @tremoore61 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Revolving door? That must be your emotions speaking, because you clearly don't know what you're taking about. We can compare the last 3 coaches form each program (also known as... "the modern era") and see exactly what's, what. We can leave out the current coaches or include them, I'll leave them out (but if you wanted to include them, Ed O's 5 1/2 years compared to Tucker's 2+ years). MSU would start with Mark Dantonio from 07' - 19' (13 years), John Smith 03' - 06' (4 years) & finally Bobby Williams 00' - 02' (3 years). LSU would be Les Miles 05' - 16' (11 years), Nick Saban who left for the NFL 00' - 04' (5 years) and finally Gerry DiNardo 95' - 99' (5 years). So for the record... that's 13 years vs 11 years (MSU wins), 4 years vs 5 years (LSU wins) and finally 3 years vs 5 years (2 - 1 in LSU's favor). Worst case scenario it could be a draw for the extra 2 years Dantonio got, but that's before I mention 3 championships with the last 3 coaches and our current coach agreed to split because of off the field issues NOT pressure. That combined with superior recruiting & a proven record of developing NFL talent and it shouldn't be hard choice for any competitive coach.

      Respectfully disagree my man, 06' alum here. B1G has been good this year, this year's bowl season should see whoa best. Their best teams this year just happen to be back loaded scheduling wise. But as far as best conference goes, the SEC has more NFL talent than any other conference (for 15 consecutive years now). And LSU has more talent then MSU on any given year. As far as money goes LSU is #2 @ $9 million/year vs MSU's #13 @ $5.5 million/year. And I know the B1G has a better TV deal, but when it comes to annual profits... LSU is still the clear winner. @@tremoore61 Bro, read my comment again. I said nothing about which conference has the best talent. I'm strictly speaking in terms of entertainment value and the Big 10 has been way more entertaining this season than the SEC. The Big 10 has been the conference in terms of entertainment. And, in terms of institutional money. MSU has a wealthier alumni group (MSU has about 3 times the amount of alums that LSU has), MSU receives at least double the amount of federal research dollars that LSU receives, and MSU's endowment is $3.4 billion and LSU's is $540 million. In other words, MSU has the money to counter anything LSU would offer. It's a matter of whether MSU wants to pay Tucker SEC type money. Tucker is already a top 15 paid coach and I think MSU will give him a significant raise to bring his pay to at least 6.5 mil a season.

      @@kamala80 agreed, but research money and endowments don't play a role in this situation. Are they going to misappropriate research money to pay a coach or to upgrade facilities? And no properly run institution would ever touch endowments to aid a football program. They use that for investments and for emergencies so the university can run like normal during years of potential crisis. Not to try to one up another program. Tucker's paid $5.56 million to Ed O's $9 million. And you're right, the SEC isn't comparable to the B1G research money... they get 10 billion annually, no ones competing with that. As as MSU grad from a family who has deep roots in East Lansing, MSU w teaas founded way before UM. Michigan State is not the "little brother" to Michigan! I almost feel sorry for Michigan having to play OSU, Iowa and any other Big Ten team that hangs a bullseye on them. On the other hand, "what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger!" Anyone dare say the Big Ten is a weak conference?

    UM fan here: Going into the game on Saturday, I felt Michigan State was the better team and had the following advantages:
    1. Home Field Advantage
    2. Psychological Advantage
    3. Offensive Advantage
    4. Two weeks to prepare
    5. A Heisman Trophy Candidate in their backfield
    6. Coaching Advantage
    7. QB Advantage
    Add to that, MSU also got the benefit of almost all the calls from the Refs, and it's amazing to think that UM at one time led by 16 points.
    In reality, Cade outplayed Peyton, but MSU made the right call by not abandoning the running game when they were down late, and eventually wore Michigan's defense down. Walker is an absolute stud, and should win the Heisman based alone on what he did on Saturday. I mean, 5 TDs in a Rivalry game by one player is insane!
    So, what does this mean going forward? For MSU, I'll say enjoy this season while it lasts. You control your own destiny, and if you can beat OSU and Penn State in back-to-back games to end the season, which is gonna be terribly tough, you deserve to win the conference and be a Playoff team. The caveat? It will cost you Mel Tucker, as he most assuredly will accept either the LSU, USC, or potentially the Miami job after the season ends. Which means, you're back to square one in finding a coach. Hint: Narduzzi would be a good choice.
    As for Michigan, it was a tough loss in many ways. It only adds more fuel to the "Fire Harbaugh" fire, because he clearly lacks something in these Rivalry games. Gonna be 3-10 against MSU and OSU by the end of the season. Next week's game against Indiana will determine how Michigan finishes this season. Will they regroup and come out angry and win in blowout fashion? Or, will they wilt after this crushing loss to MSU? Their culture is gonna be tested the rest of the way. But, winning 3 of their next 4, or at worst 2 of their next 4, at worst makes them 9-3 and at best 10-2, which will keep them in the top 15 and net them a nice bowl game. As for Harbaugh, my gut tells me the 7-0 start and their obvious improvement in all aspects of their team, will keep him off the hot seat for another season or two.
    Final prediction for both teams: MSU ends the season with one loss to Ohio State, while Michigan ends the season with two losses to MSU and OSU. Both teams will be ranked in the Top 10, meanwhile once again OSU will win the conference and play in the playoffs. MSU will play in the Rose Bowl, most likely against Oregon, UM will just miss out on a New Year's Six Bowl, and will play an SEC team in a Florida-based bowl game. Most likely, Florida, Auburn or Kentucky.

    To be honest, Jim Bo Fisher, Kirby Smart and Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley, none those coaches ever had head coaching experience. Lincoln Riley is coaching in a league where he has all the leagues’ 5 and 4 stars players, the nearest team maybe get 3 players with four stars in a recruiting year at the most; strangely, annually Oklahoma loses one game to a much less talented team. Moving the goal post….but hey, Whatever! The best coaches are program builders Urban Myers and the great, Nick Saban got to go on to greatnesses. Some coaches don’t get to be trust fund coaches, have a blue blood program drop in their laps. Mel Tucker and Lincoln Riley went head to head in the semifinals, Tucker made adjustments in the second half and Lincoln Riley did not or could not do the same. In the SEC, all the top teams have players with 4 and 5 stars. You’ll see when Oklahoma joins the SEC and have play Georgia, LSU and maybe a Florida later in the year. That is much different from Kansas, Kansas State and TCU, no offense to TCU. Never mind Alabama and Texas A&M, perennial 10 ranked schools.

    Michigan has absolutely nothing to be ashes of either.

    MSU decided they were going to stop the run and they get an A+ for that. They gave up just over 100 yds to the UoM backs with 0 TDs and a single run over 11 yds. Their D isn't the old Dantonio defenses who dominate you. They are bend but don't break who relies on pass rush and TOs. They dared McNamara to beat them and he almost did. UoM choose to play 2 high safties and stop MSUs deep passing game. They did a pretty good job (gave up a 40 and 28 yd both on 4th down). They dared Walker to beat them and he did. Walker>McNamara.

    MSU will never have a Heisman winner period. The Mainstream Sports Media cannot/will not have a team in Michigan with the Heisman trophy that isn't in Ann Arbor. KWIII could've run for 3000 yards and the Heisman voters would still vote for a UM defensive lineman over any MSU offensive skill player.

      -Rich Rod Was a Bad Coach

      It’s really hard to also not take everything else into consideration though if you’re pointing fingers. Like the fact that UM kicked 4 field goals. And they were out scored 23-3 in the last 20 or so minutes. If the refs were the only thing influencing the game, then I’d give that argument some more credit, but UM had far bigger issues. You can’t just ignore that and say they deserved to win, it’s not the truth of the matter.
