  • College Football's top 15 programs over the NEXT 3 years are...? That was the question on Late Kick Live Ep 528 as Josh Pate considered on-field results, talent acquisition, resources, and culture to project how things will shake out. In the SEC we'll certainly see UGA, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee and others continue to roll. What about Texas, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma? Does Ohio State run the Big Ten over Oregon, Michigan, and Penn State? Notre Dame continues to climb as does FSU. Where are Clemson and Miami in the next 3 seasons? Follow recruiting. You're in denial. Miami is spending money on the football program for the 1st time ever. It won championships without spending money and got left behind when the powerhouse programs spent money over the last 20 years. Financial commitment to the program is in Cristobal's contract. South Florida is one of the most talented areas for recruiting. It's just silly to think Miami won't be a national power again. Alabama won championships with South Florida players. Clemson, Georgia, and Ohio State as well.
Mario Cristobal is the best recruiter before and during NIL. He's at his alma mater recruiting in the mecca of high school football. Do the math.

There were some seasons at the end of Mack’s tenure when they got the benefit of the doubt but that was because they were really good for a lot of years so they got that winners bump. Then they lost that after a few years of mediocrity and were rarely ever picked higher than 4th to win the big 12, let alone a high rank. The only reason they were still ranked at all most the time is because they still out recruit the majority of the country and that isn’t a Texas thing, that’s just how rankings are usually done. The reason being, as has been reported like we are seeing with their current recruiting class, is Phil Knight is 86 years old and desperate for them to win a natty before his time ends. So he's opened up a blank check for Oregon to use in recruiting. Sheer talent that theyre getting will put them up there the next 3 years. That being said, I'm not sure if Dan Lanning will stay there when other programs may have vacant head coach positions like Florida (as a rumor) and that would change things. Josh, LTL/FTC. Love your work. Never miss a show (live if I can). Also an LSU guy.
A ranking of 11th, on its face, seems low. You suggested there were “internal alignment” issues. Then said (paraphrasing) “I won’t discuss it.” Deferred to “local best.”
I think that was a very easy thing to do, but also a bit of a cop-out. If you’re going to pick your hill, stand by it. What if local beat doesn’t agree? What if they just won’t take the bait (don’t want to be negative, could lose a degree of access)? A couple of the top local guys know me well enough to engage via DM, but that’s about it (I.e. not an insider _at_ _all_} and I’ll poke around. But if you’re gonna take a perennial T10 team and leave them out, and then smirk out of an explanation, it seems unfair and a bit neglectful of a core base that generally likes and supports you.
Please consider elaborating. I generally agree with your LSU takes, and just love your takes in general (“haven’t vs. can’t” is right up there for me, next to “don’t say you’re sorry, _act_ sorry”).
Could you please step up and elaborate?

As an Ole Miss fan I love this show but I knew Josh wouldn’t put Ole Miss in the top 15 before I even clicked on the video. I don’t think he hates Ole Miss or anything but he’s never been super high on us in his power ratings.
For example, in his SEC rankings he did a while back, he said that he based his ranking on the PREVIOUS 3 seasons, but he had LSU over Ole Miss even though Ole Miss beat them 2 out of the 3 years and had a better record than them during that stretch.
So seeing teams like Miami and Texas A&M over Ole Miss on this ranking was no shock. If I had to guess, I think Josh must believe that Kiffin’s gonna leave Ole Miss sooner rather than later, or he believes that our NIL Collective won’t be able to keep pace with the programs that made the list. Ole Miss also doesn’t recruit high school in the top 15 so that probably hurts us a lot in his rankings.
It’s a shame because for first time since like the 60s, the media actually views Ole Miss as a legitimate contender this year, but we can’t even manage to make the top 15 of his list. It sucks but Ole Miss has never really been a perennial blue blood powerhouse so I understand I guess

Also pleasantly surprised to see Oklahoma as high as they are. You seem to be different than so many other national people that just expect Oklahoma to fall apart in the years to come.
Saw this segment on the show last night. On an unrelated note, still hope the name for the tour will be the "NEW Eras" tour. It can reference several new eras for the sport, like for each of the teams, for the conferences with these new teams in them, and for the power 2 conferences to clearly start their new dominance of the sport. And a play on the name of the Taylor Swift tour would certainly make for some interesting interactions on Twitter for you.

All A&M has ever needed to do is get a good o-line that can protect their QB. 3 straight years of having your starting QB injured and you’d think that would be a priority. The last time A&M went a full season with a healthy QB was when they went 9-1 in 2020. Interested to see how that plays out this year and if it’ll be 4 straight years of QB injuries.

How bout an upper staff who all get along and the power of the BMDs and Regents actually funnels through the prove, successful President and Athletic Director of the university. Remember when Texas was a "cesspool"? Well it was, and it was a tug of war between the donors and those in power. There was a weak Athletic Director in place. Fast forward to Chris Del Conte (who just won the award for best AD in the country), and he's been on fire making good hires left and right, and funneling all the support in one direction under him. Sark has fixed the standard and has implemented a success culture (Herman had a toxic culture). It was irrelevant all the resources Texas has had if all those are issues. They arent issues anymore and Texas still is second to none in resources. Thats why they are and should be top 5. I think theyre interchangeable with Oregon and the only reason that is, is because Phil Knight is writing blank checks for Oregon so he can try to get a chip before his time ends as hes currently 86yo.

      2) 3 years of coaching stability on both sides of the ball.

They have the building blocks to be a top 15 in 3-5 years. Too soon to tell

I’m a diehard Sooner living in Omaha and I think Nebraska is the biggest winner of the new NIL. The blue bloods that haven’t faltered and fallen, like Nebraska has, were gonna be fine either way. Nebraska has a gigantic fan base that’s spread throughout the country and they are beyond thirsty to return to the glory days. NIL levels the playing field as far as convincing an elite player to go to Lincoln. I think they have the right coach who is capable of guiding them to the top and won’t be tempted by the NFL if he makes it there. The only worry about Rhule is if he significantly improves Nebraska, but can’t get to the level of Ohio State and Michigan. If that happens, Rhule might be tempted by a school like Florida. I think Nebraska plays hard nosed ball and the bad QB play that killed them last year will be cleaned up. I see them winning their first 7 games this year before the schedule catches up to them. If they can win half of their games after that, it would be a successful year and something they can build on.

I'd Argue that Georgia and Alabama could SWITCH #1 and #2 Spots from Season to Season for the Next 3+ Years.
The GOLD STANDARD (Bama) and the DIAMOND DAWGS (Georgia) Showing the World what College Football AND the SEC is all about!
Only Part of the Top 15 I'd question is Florida State being So High, and Clemson being a Lot Lower than I expected.
I get there's a Philosophy Difference between the Two Programs, but enough of a difference to drop Clemson down 7 Positions from the Seminoles.
Then Again... That could change IF Clemson BEATS Florida State this Year. They Came Close Last Year (Had their Kicker decided to do their JOB).

Seems odd Utah is on the Thumbnail but not in the top 15. Culture and performance are on point. Top in the nation. But talent acquisition and resources not elite, So i’m okay with it. But why on the thumbnail?

Josh you need to stop making videos and reflect and how you ranked the reigning national champion…what’s Ryan days record vs the current UM hc? What’s James Franklin s record vs him???? What did PJ Fleck say after their game in 2023??

Beyond. ...he obviously doesn't think Michigan is gonna do much this year or much beyond it, either. It's a valid prediction. He was probably too generous, with Michigan being inside of the top 10 honestly.

I've been to Mizzou games before......half empty stadium and their fans don't pay attention....had a bunch near me cheer when a touchdown was announced...except it was for the visiting team!! LOL THAT is NOT Culture!! Unless you mean "culture" as in sour milk or something else that spoiled! And Ole Miss has had a couple decent years recently....just like Clemson had a short run for awhile but did nothing for over 30 years!! That's even WORSE than Texas! Or Miami?!! BTW....Are they "back" yet? LOL

Off topic but as a kid (90s-2000s) I always had this “feeling” “knowing” that Texas “would be in the SEC one day” but I also felt as if “they deserved to be there already?” Like it just makes sense??? No. Just me. Well they are in the SEC now I’m not saying I seen the future😂 it’s just weird other note Go Gamecocks!🐓😎😂😂😂😂

As an LSU fan, #11 is about the best we could hope for. A little surprised that USC wasn't listed; based not so much on their recent past but on their potential.
