Pfft, how obvious. How could people not know this?
Too many of the tracks were designed with jumps and falling points that would've required extensive rebuilding of the tracks to support running them in 'reverse.' Baby Park is an example of one that doesn't, in comparison to really complicated tracks like Wario Coliseum where you can't really go back up the first jump. Good idea, but not enough time or effort available to implement it.
It may have just been a mirror mode instead of backwards progression.
Mirror Mode had a seperate icon.
Also, apparently it references filenames for four specific courses: Yoshi Circuit, Dino Dino Jungle, Peach Beach, and Mushroom Bridge. Of those, only Dino Dino Jungle seems to have any issues driving backwards

"Rap time" is probably because there's actually no "L" in Japanese. They usually use "R" sounds instead.

This is simply incorrect. They don't have an R sound or an L sound. The sound they use is in between those two sounds, kind of like a slurred soft D sound. Thus, when transcribing this sound from Japanese into English, both L and R are valid substitutes.
Yes but still when the kana alphabet is romanized it's always understood as "RA" (and the rest, RI RU RE RO).
Only after further context is RA then further understood at times to represent LA

Imagine if Nintendo included the All Cup mode in MK8D. Now there's a cup that would take a long time to complete. 48 tracks all at once to try and get first in all of them for three star rankings. I would probably lose my mind at 150cc and up.

Took some research to find but the green plane in Baby Park seems to be an unused transformation for Yoshi from super Mario world 2 Yoshi's island.

I'm gonna guess the reason the Reverse Cup was removed was because certain course designs would make going backwards impossible (for example jump slopes like on Rainbow Road, where you can't go backward without falling). It's an awesome idea though and I hope they eventually add it with special reversed versions of tracks with a few changes to make them possible.
You know, the reverse cup was just an early mirror mode. The cup had 4 select courses that the player could race on backwards like mirror mode
Fun fact: There’s also an extra disc, wich is included when you bought the game on disc, called “MKDD: Bonus Disc”. It’s basically the same as the Multi-Disc demo disc. But it also includes an early demo of Sonic Heroes. I actually had this Demo Disc when I was young, wich means that i also had MKDD when I was young as well. I forgotten about it until now.
If you can you should do more boundary break lost bits for other games and mario kart games

4:58 no you're mistaking, it was the special freestyle mode that you would unlock after beating the 101% of the game. In this mode, you could indeed rap like an OG from tha west coast
That plane thing in Baby Park kinda reminds me of the plane enemies and mini boss in Kirby and The Amazing Mirror.
What a coincidence I was literally trying to find a copy of this under $50. (The reason for the high price is because I want to buy this game [around $40 on Amazon. I don't trust EBay. Too shady.] and a second GameCube controller [So i can play with a friend. Controller is around $10 on Amazon.]) But it's cool that while I look I have this mini-series to look forward to. In my opinion Double Dash is the best Mario Kart. It's unique, innovative, he'll the multiplayer is so fun since you can have the added benefit of CO-OP MODE! Something not seen in any other Mario Kart. And let's not forget how great the game itself is with its character roster, music, sound, graphics, courses, and much more!
Also, I believe the unused balloons maybe someway connected to the unused balloons in Diddy Kong Racing for N64 :)

I almost wanna say that Reverse Cup was removed either to Hardware/Memory/General Space limitations (who knows this kinda stuff has acted oddly before.) Or it was too similar to Mirror Mode (driving backwards and flipped are kind of the same thing) or maybe it was like Bottle's Revenge from Banjo-Tooie: It was cut due to time limits and wasn't quite finished yet (if the code still exists in the game like Bottle's Revenge we may never know).

Dry Dry Desert is one of my favourite tracks in Double Dash. It gets the random desert vibe down to a T, and it has all the awesome obstacles of the Pokeys, tornado and Piranha Plant sarlaac pit. Such a shame that so much of it was left out in the MK8 'remake'.

I'm part of a games club and while it's not been done for ages, we've used the Lan Mode on Mario Kart: Double Dash when we've had a really big tournament I believe. It was pretty hectic! ^^

I feel like this image is a placeholder, not a dev joke. Perhaps this would have been used for them to say "hey, if you see this image, you've achieved the 'exciting ending', which hasn't actually been made yet".
The Reverse Cup was likely removed because some courses have one-way routes (eg. cliff jumps, doors) so it would have been difficult to work around those.

The lan mode can be played using the Dolphin Emulator. I've personally gotten to try 8-player double dash with a group of friends by running emulated lan between 2 instances of Dolphin

I'm pretty sure the 'plane shaped enemies' are a version of the plane form yoshi has in yoshis island
the reverse cup was sort of finally used in mario kart tour where certain races in certain cups of a tour are backwards races and they have R in their track’s name which stands for reverse

Minor thing, but any time you see something fully textured but underground (or indeed, anything that looks identical to anything else), it's probably "instanced." Instancing basically lets you load one model once into RAM, and then use it over and over again throughout the level. Instead of copy-pasting while level building, it's referencing an object that already exists in memory... One object, dozens or hundreds of references.
Because of this, the trees you reference in the beginning of the video that are made as billboards probably don't save any RAM, as you speculated. If they had full 3D trees, it would simply be more references to / instances of the existing object. And therefore, no additional RAM. The billboarded trees they shipped with probably cost RAM, as they needed to create a new sprite for the trees. What they're probably saving is GPU time, as they're not taking the cycles to render a whole lot of polygons unnecessarily. The artists probably ran into chugging framerate issues around this part of the track, and during the optimization phase cut back to billboarded trees.
One last thing: The awful art you see in a lot of these are generally referred to as "programmer art." That's when someone builds a feature, but the real art isn't finished. So the programmer sticks in something temporarily to make it clear what is going on, which gets replaced with real art later. And a lot of time you forget to take them out before the release build. My studio usually uses pancakes for some reason. I think we need to feed the engineers more.

The weird green creatures on the carousel sort of look like the very first sketch of Mario on Yoshi, where at one point its a dinosaur with legs, then next its a pterodactyl. Maybe it payed homage to that drawing, who knows.

I have a Mario Kart Double Dash Bonus Disc for the Gamecube that contains many demos like Sonic Heroes and Mario Party 7.
I've seen that 16 player screen on a double dash double feture disk that is used specifically for that. Damn the disk is scratched to hell now. Im really kicking myself now.
How did I not know about Luigi’s Mansion being on Luigi Circuit! I have done hundreds of laps on that course and never noticed it!

The “plane-looking enemy thing” is Yoshi when he’s lying on his stomach.
For the Reverse Cup, try doing every course in reverse and see how it goes. If it falls, that would be the reason.
The thing on the Baby Park carousel that you were questioning is showing an unused transformation for Yoshi in Yoshi's Island. It's Yoshi as an airplane. My guess is that this was originally planned to be used instead of the helicopter transformation that actually appears in game.

A reason that the reverse cup might have been removed is because certain corses have drops or something like that witch makes the track impossible
I tried the 16 player mode at a retro gaming night. (That's an event at a game store I went to all the time where someone brings in older systems to play the games.) anyway we did the double dash 16 player lan line event. My partner and I didn't win, but hey I managed to forget that I was playing the GameCube version and went into the water in Daisy's Cruiser level. (A noob move lol)

sorry im late but the plane enemies are found in nsmb wii in world 7 i think but i dont think they were in any games before that (these were in the baby park section) :)
Probably already mentioned, but the red roller coaster vehicle and the green merry go round things (sorry I don't know what else to call them) are yoshis. In Yoshi's Island, you can turn into things such as a plane, a train, a submarine, etc.
The goomba thing on the carisell I think is what the goomba from super Mario world kinda look like and goobo sounds ether like a gigantic goomba or a combination of a goomba and a hammer bro
