Back again to another Mario Lost Bits video and this time swinging it back to one of the first major Mario sports games (at least as we know them now!) Mario Golf for botht the Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Color! BING BING WAHOO

"Hidden Intro Results" isn't unused. It is played in the Transfer Pak menu whenever you want to transfer your GBC character to the game.

"This buffer is for notes you don't want to save, and for Lisp evaluation." is actually a piece of placeholder text from the Emacs file editor, it appears whenever you open it without opening a file. Emacs is a commonly used editor on Linux and Unix systems and works entirely in the command-line.
The "Lisp" it refers to in this case is actually a programming language that Emacs uses for its plugins, configuration, etc.
My guess is the devs used Emacs to develop the game and this somehow wound in the final build, or it's just dummy data.
Emacs? You mean “eMac’s”? The eMac was a version of the iMac G3 that was made for schools, hence the “e” prefix in its name, which stands for “education”

Hmmmm, "cartway" ground seems to me like it was to be used for paved paths for golf carts. Possibly at one point they had planned on having golf cart props in the game.
2:01 That text is the message that's displayed in the "scratch buffer" in the Emacs text editor (minus the letters at the end and random spacing issues).
2:15 Lisp evaluation probably means that you could run a variant of the Lisp programming language on the Gameboy (which would be incredible and incredibly hard)
It was probably a debugging feature that could be toggled by a button combination. It wouldn't surprise me if they built the game on PC and used an emulator for testing at the time, as the game came out later in the Gameboy's lifespan and it wasn't an uncommon practice.
MNGoldenEagle yea probably. I'm surprised that they chose Lisp though, as they seem to use some form of C for most of their products
Actually, "This buffer is for notes you don't want to save, and for Lisp evaluation." is the default contents of the scratch buffer in the Emacs text editor. I'd guess someone needed a test string and just opened the scratch buffer, typed "ABCDEFG" and saved. Or something.

The song at 9:25 actually came up when you needed to reformat your controller pack data for whatever reason, (or maybe it was to import your character from the GB, I forgot). I distinctly remember that one because I had my Nintendo 64, and an old janky controller storage pack, and the GB thing that came with Pokemon Stadium at the time.

Miss this series so much. 3DS titles were shallow. Golf Story soothed the itch for a while but it has no replay value. N64 gamecube and GBA titles are each amazing in their own way.

Edit: After some research the game was just "Golf"
I legit just started playing golf and this and Wii Sports golf are the only practice I’ve had so far
8:18, That 1st unused music track, or Australian/European track (I forgot the other country Oops 🤣), when it was switching to show the other characters, like Mario Golfing to switching to Peach's reaction and same to Luigi's. They should've at least put it at the end credits or have some sort of sound test, like the Kirby series does. (Even though I never played a Mario sports game before besides the Olympic Games)

I love the N64 Version of Mario Golf, still play it to this day on my Wii. Lots of classic holes and tracks, also Sonny and Harry are absolute legends!

There was a Mario tennis RPG on the GameBoy but a whole golf RPG is amazing
When (or if) the Sega Saturn mini comes out, please do a NiGHTS into Dreams Lost Bits or Sonic 3D Blast Lost Bits

Also, the Zemmix (which was essentially an MSX computer made into a game console and was released exclusively in South Korea) had a mini release in 2017. A Sega Saturn mini isn't that crazy of an idea, so it might happen. Plus there is a massive fanbase supporting the Saturn, so it could be a possibility. But only time can tell.

I'd say the cartway texture and effects are a leftover from an earlier build or are reused assets from another Camelot developed game from a competing console, Hot Shots Golf (Everybody's Golf) in 1997. Oddly enough, Camelot created the franchise for Sony but only developed the first game in the franchise with Clap Hanz taking over starting with the sequel.

At 11:08, when you mention the background getting all wonky when it repeats textures as you move the camera, what is that called? I've seen it in a lot of games in videos that manipulate the camera in ways unintended by devs
I think of golf cart paths are were the reason for it being there. To go further than that if they hit off the cart path to many times then the club could break. hitting off the concrete is not good for the club at all irl and it could damage a club a lot to the point where it will not be able to have as much loft.
I figured they would have cartways alongside the fairways and greens like you'd actually find on a lot of golf courses.

The cart way surface would probably be for golf carts and be along the sides of the course. That's what it's like in Tiger Woods
Idk if any of the other comments have pointed it out, but I actually know what "Hidden_Intro_Results" At 9:24 goes to.
Whenever you have the Transfer pack in your Controller with the GBC Mario Gold Game inserted, the game will start you up on the screen to Transfer the GBC Exclusive Characters over. And that Music Track is what plays in the Background.
While I don't know what the 2nd one is relating to. I have a feeling it's linked to the Transfer pack as well. Maybe from transferring EXP Back to the GBC?

10:20 its a cart path, for golf carts. They have asphalt paths for the golf carts.
Almost every golf game has a cartway/asphalt ground type. I loved to challenge myself and friends to land the ball on the cartway.
To expand on the "Cartway" terrain type on MG64, golf cart paths at golf courses are often concrete, asphalt, or gravel. They had possibly thought about including golf cart paths in-game, but then scrapped the idea later on.

I'm guessing the 'Cartway' terrain was probably going to be used for cart paths on the sides of the courses, NOT a parking lot course. Lol.
Asphalt was most likely for foot paths, other golf games have had very similar ground types.

You're right about the test string, but you're wrong about being lost in translation. Lisp is a very old programming language. I want to say it was from the 60's and it's still taught at universities for talking about how interpreters actually run code. It was missing a space probably due to wanting it to display as one line or for total character count.
That secret song using Yoshi/DK in Mario Golf 64 is actually the Palm Club soundtrack from the gameboy game just an fyi.

You should look at the debug content for Mobile Golf on GBC. Very similar to Mario Golf GBC but it has new characters like Foreman Spike. Not all of the debug content has been fully interpreted yet (unfortunately a lot of it is in Japanese since it only came out in Japan) but it's a chance to discover something new!

Hey just a quick correction: The reason the "Cartway" is in the game is because this game uses the same engine as "Everybody's Golf" (Hot Shots Golf in the US) and in that game multiple courses have cart paths along the sides of the courses. When you hit the ball on these they bounce and roll extremely well much in the same way it does irl. My guess is that they didn't remove it since it would have been wasted dev time instead of just not building a pathway at all and keeping the code for it in the game.
