- Whenever I had friends over back in the early 2000s, Mario Kart: Double Dash was our game of choice (that and Donkey Konga). And though more than 12 years have passed since the game's release, we'll still play this classic racer together whenever we find the chance. It's fast racing gameplay is what keeps us coming back, but it turns out that "fast" was not a term the described this game at E3 2003. In fact, "disappointing" and "slow" were common terms to describe Double Dash during development. So, how did the development team fix these issues? Well, on this episode of Beta64, I'll tell you all about it.

About the speedometer, it looks like the numbers were still in metric and hadn't yet been changed from the Japanese version... but the "km/h" graphic had already been replaced.
200 miles = 320 kilometers, which means the cannon stayed the same throughout development.
And that cruising speed of 75-80 km/h is roughly 45-50 mph, which lines up with the claims of the prototype being slower than the final.

Ah.. Double Dash. While I consider 8 to be the best of the series, Double Dash holds a special place in my heart. My family was going through a rough spot, and all we had were each other. My brother and I LOVED the two-player kart option, and I would spend the race as the driver while my brother was the "gunner." We were very coordinated, and he would often use the "attack" option to save us from trouble! I recall numerous instances where he had saved our skins from a pit or incoming item using the attack!
Same I think the best MK is either 8 or Double Dash there so great!!
I agree too. I have to give the best title to 8 just because of more courses and fantastic online play, I mean, it came out like 10+ years later and had so much room for improvement. But Double Dash has to be second on my list.

Disclaimer - I'm not saying the game isn't still great and enjoyable to this day, because it is, but it sure as hell isn't perfect lmao. That's just one of several of the game's major flaws.

They _did_ listen to fans for Paper Mario. That's exactly why Sticker Star came to be. Nobody could handle a standard platformer for a Paper Mario game. You played yourselves.

Mario Kart DS is by far the best because of the mission mode, great courses, (Waluigi Pinball!!) and just overall being really solid. I do have a bias since it WAS my first Mario game though. I was like 3.

Omar Mohammed I attribute that to the fact that they know that any trailer is going to piss fans off royally... Double Dash was easy to fix because it just involved upping the speed factor, but Color Splash would involve a lot more renovation to make it a better game, which I don't think they'd have time for if they want a Summer release. I hate to say it, but Nintendo gains more from releasing Color Splash as a hated mess of a game than changing tables and making it at least decent. With two horrible Paper Mario games in a row, hype for a "true" Paper Mario game will be through the roof when Paper Mario NX is announced, more so than if they went Sticker Star (terrible) to Color Splash (decent). Color Splash being awful actually helps the series in a weird sort of way, as even if it were like Thousand Year Door, nobody would buy it since it's on Wii U. A good NX sequel will do MUCH better than a good Wii U sequel.

Omar Mohammed Miyamoto is against story based games in general... the problem is that the original Paper Mario games were fine from a gameplay standpoint, yet he needed to change what wasn't broken in the name of "innovation"...

I'm not going to lie, Beta64. Double Dash did have a lot of great memories for me and as a result, it is my second favorite Mario Kart in the series, right behind 64. I can credit 8 for its amazing DLC, but to me, the game doesn't need it, but it helped a lot for my enjoyment to build up.
And...wow, Nintendo actually listening to the feedback for Double Dash? Man, I love Iwata as a family member in my book, but...I'm hoping the new president will turn things around and make the company a legend again.
I don't have a GameCube but I do have a DS. My friends and I try to recreate doubledash by having 2 people using one DS. One person has the right side, (items and acceleration ) and another has the left (steering)

My first ones were DS and Double Dash!!. I never owned the Wii one sadly, but I do have 7 and 8, so there's that.
My favorite is either 7 or 8 (7 for portability and great tracks, 8 for great tracks and innovation through anti-grav) but Wii comes pretty close. Mario kart games have been getting progressively better imo.

This was very interesting! Double Dash has been my favorite game for 11 years now, so seeing the beta of it was pretty cool. I love looking into the beta and trivia of my favorite games, mostly games from my childhood!

I feel sorry for those born too late to experience this masterpiece.
It has nothing to do with nostalgia, this game is genuinely great. it has way too few tracks but the fact that you can play with someone like that is absolutely incredible and they really really need to add that feature to newer Mario games it was so much fun and the other person didn't have to have as much skill and you could work together instead of against each other
double dash is my favorite mario kart game! any yes i have played and owned all of them i put countless hours into this game and i still play now! for some reason i feel that that the cart physics in MKDD is unmatched! the springs and traction of the carts was amazing in this game. and the never again used special items is a truly missed feature that i wish would return because it gave you a reason to pick other characters and mix and match them. Also the unique cars was awesome. This game has so much replay value from my childhood and beyond here's to double dash!

Well they listened to Super Smash Bros fans, and look at that: the GameCube to Wii U Adapter was released publicly, brand new characters, stages and music that was demanded by the fans. Stop criticizing about the little mistakes that this company makes. They are working at their best to produce high quality games. Appreciate the great games we have today and the things Nintendo do for us, rather than complaining about what we don't have and they don't do.

Something I noticed is that at around 7:05 there is a Yoshi Egg in the item block randomizer thing, but it looks like DK and Diddy are the ones on the kart. Maybe originally everyone could get all special items?

7:15 - Just doing some rough calculations, it appears that the speedometer is in the beta is in kilometres per hour despite the speedo saying 'mph'; 320 km/h is 199 mph. This would make sense as Japan uses kilometres per hour rather than miles per hour.

Another phenomena that was likely at work making players feel like the demo was slower could in fact be the placement and lower field of view of the camera. The wider your FOV is in any game, the higher your perceived movement speed will be. It's more likely that in the demo, the karts really were faster, but the camera settings made it look a lot slower, and once they gave the players a better view, the higher top speeds probably felt much too fast.
This is my fav Mario Kart game, this is also my first game I've ever played when I was 5.

Wow I never once thought that Nintendo once made Double Dash bad and I also never thought they would listen to the fans during the game's development and make those changes for the better!! I played some GameCube games back in the day at a haircut place called Cool Cuts and one of those games was Double Dash and man did I just enjoy that game to death! I also played Pac-Man Versus and man were those the best games I have ever played at that haircut place!!

This is my favorite Mario Kart simply because it was the first one I had, and was obsessed with like I mean OBSESSED. It was actually the reason my parents even bought me a gamecube in the first place, after playing it at my cousins house. I spend hours and hours playing this game, and playing it with my mom and beating her every time

In the final logo for DK Mountain has a cannon next to DK but for the demo it has no cannon
I own and love this game, Bowser Jr and Diddy Kong were the two characters I always matched up (well, when everything was unlocked) and Toad's Kart was the vehicle I always used. The speed of the game was definitely one of the best parts of the game, it's SO fast and so fun 😁
The difference in mph between the e3 demo and the final game is because the e3 demo is in kilometers per hour, it just says miles per hour. Also, 320 km/h=195 mph.

My first Mario kart game as a kid. I'm an adult now and would happily go back to this game. The stage variety, the different carts, the characters, the difficulty--I loved it so much.
Hey that was some interesting stuff, this is my favorite MK game too, 6 years of fun with my brother, countless nights in middleschool and highschool. 2 player grand prix and the battle minigames were the best especially the shine sprite one. Good times...

When they showed off the placeholder featuring Mario and Luigi driving karts in their Melee models, I was reminded of Rosalina's Reveal Trailer where she and Kirby interrupt a race on Rainbow Road. It probably wasn't intentional, but it was a funny throwback.

I can't believe this game has never had a true sequel. It was so fun to have the character specials and 2-person karts.
This is hands down the best MK in the series. My friends and I now that we're older all play the "drink and drive" version with this game. Which is fun because then its the "quadruple D Drunk Driving Double Dash".
Mario Kart Double Dash really is the best Mario Kart game ever developed. It's sad that none of the features ever returned in future Mario Kart games. Rumors spread that MK8 was going to have two people in one kart in a brand new mode while having a drill to dig through tunnels and underground instead of having anti-gravity. Mario Kart DX was close to having "double dash" but not what everyone expected. What we missed the most besides "double dash mode" is All Cup Tour. If Nintendo brings any of those features back for the Nintendo NX, that would be great but depending on how the game is made, 9 times out of ten, the original "Double Dash" game will be better.
They brought back the bob-ombs and made those just be a normal item, and I thought that was great.

fun fact: i still dunno if this was mentioned in the vid but im gonna say anyway in case there isint. mario kart double dash originaly had an low-budget graphics even for gamecube, an gameplay that remembers super mario kart (exept no items or coins or anything else) AN SINGLE track. only you racing on that smol track and in general no wonder why they changed it. that version was (or is idk witch word i use) named as mario kart XXL or XL

Coming from the Live stream today, looks like you talk about the E3 version of the Luigi Circuit logo at 5:33 but I can't find the other two early logos. But that makes sense since that track was in the first cup. Now, like I (belkinsa) said if I do another look at those logs would there be other changes then those two we have seen?
Now that the switch is out i would love a remake of double dash in HD that mario kart 8 crap deluxe is just so not what i was expecting from nintendo :(
