Honestly for all the criticism that sunshine gets, this is one thing I always loved about sunshine, the moveset and the spin jump was just glorious. I hate how it was either absent or nerfed so much in later games.
So despite sunshine's many flaws, the diverse and rewarding moveset makes it a better experience everytime I replay it to the point where even many of the games flaws become nothing more than minor nuisances.

Yeah, Sunshine (imo) has the funnest and most natural feeling movement tech of any 3d mario. Granted, galaxy is also really good and feels very natural to me, I don't have a huge amount of experience with 64, and I've never played Odyssey enough to get used to the movement (but it felt very awkward to me for the bit that I was trying it on my nephew's switch). In any case, nitpicking over 3d Mario movement is like nitpicking over fine wine, they're all top tier!
Could also be because sunshine is the one I played the most of during my early childhood gaming years, and then galaxy once the Wii came out.

Honestly Odyssey could have made Spinjumps much easier due to having a button dedicated to spinning, which prevents wear and tear on controllers. However Odyssey Spinjumps (alongside all Spinjumps post-Sunshine) are pathetic with how much they slow Mario down. That's something that makes Sunshine feel so good to play, even for casuals like me. It's fluid (pun not intended) in how Mario moves. Sunshine and 64 both have physics which make him feel rather fast, but moves like Spinjumps only make things better with being able to preserve speed and even gain more using the terrain.
Also Sunshine's Spinjumps have the swooshy sounds so it's automatically the best 3D Mario game.

    • @shiverian5970
      @shiverian5970 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Yeah Odyssey's spin jumps themselves suck but spinpounds especially buffered out of a dive are so clean. Buffered spinpound into forward rc is so good.

@@shiverian5970 I quite like that Spin Jumps are a single button press as it prevents controller wear and tear. Still, really wish Mario keeps his momentum when doing a Spin Jump alongside being able to actually achieve decent heights with it again.

Man, I know a bunch of people probably already say this, but your video production is fucking stellar. The scripts are wonderfully informative and weave in jokes really smoothly (at least in my opinion, unsure how someone who doesn't find 'em very funny would view that lol) and the editing is just so insanely well done. Maybe it's just my relative inexperience talking, but goddamn you must put so much effort into it, it's unreal. I think the bit that stuck out most to me was the demonstration of how stick quadrants are relative to the map's cardinal directions - I'm sure it's not perfect, but you tracked the rotation incredibly accurately for something most probably wouldn't think about. Perhaps there's an automated way to do that which I just don't know of I suppose, but this level of polish is *everywhere,* and that's what I'm getting at. I'm sure you know that better than anyone since you're the guy who put it together, but it's still a treat to watch.
Wonderful job on this, and all the others you've put together. The care in presentation is something I legitimately strive for.
"Spin" instance guess: the number 132 is calling to me, so I'm going with that.

Interesting how this game handles spinputs! I run SA2 and our game has its own weird quirk where clockwise spinputs only correctly register a spiral upper with a full rotation, but counterclockwise spinputs only need a single frame of up, left, and down to register.
There's a couple interesting variants of it too, though nothing anywhere close to this since spinputs are far less universally required in our game.

Trey you are precious, I was actually just thinking before this video dropped, how nice it would be if there was an easy way to learn every type of spinjump. Thanks!

I just watched this again as a refresher (altho it didn’t quite have what I was looking for) and all I gotta say is what a try-hard going for that extra spin dive on the spinning cogs in noki 6 instead of doing a side flip dive haha

absolutely gorgeous video as always. succinctly explains all these intricacies super well while still having enough levity and humor as to not overwhelm the viewer. thank you for doing what you're doing

You are very welcome for my buttslide contribution in 2018.
Also the "frame perfect spin" is a bit misleading. Sunshine polls inputs 30 times a second, but checks collision detection 120 times a second. To maintain maximum speed, Mario must jump on the first "quarter step" upon landing, if he jumps on step 2 through 4 he loses a significant amount of speed, even though A was pressed on the first possible frame. Being 'frame perfect' on the jump input is more like 1 in 4 chance of conserving all of your speed. (It's not genuine probability/randomness, of course, just a matter of lining up vertical position properly).

This is why I love the movement in Sunshine MUCH more than 64 and Galaxy. It feels so satisfying and fun to mess around with spin jumps.
Was interesting to learn in detail how every spin jump works

Yeah, I remember back when I was a kid I loved butjumps. I did them all the time. But I was just 3 years old back then so I had the time to practice. I also did every skip here and a few of those wall jumps, including the one you find so difficult.
Pretty weird to have all those jumps I did as a kid be named after random people. But back then I was not so much into community stuff, so I just figured all that stuff out on my own.
Admittedly, I only managed to beat the game in a time faster than the current world record when I was 5. It literally took me 2 years to master that game to that extend. That just goes to show ow deep this game is. Mario 64, for example, was mastered by me in about 1 year when I was 2. It was a pretty old game by then, but my record was about 1 minute faster than the current world record. Mario Sunshine really has more depth to it.
Anyway nice video. I like that you only showed footage of beginners, and not of skilled people. That really make the point that you do not have to be good like me at this game in order to enjoy it.

It is a shame that sunshine is so undervalued since it is one of the most sophisticated platforms that exist, already in galaxy, 3D world and Oddyssey the control is tremendously simplified, there is no longer such a long learning curve
