Yes agreed. Isn’t it interesting how some of the earliest games of a genre can get everything so right (Dark Souls)? And these modern games have the entire blueprint - but 95% of them still fail. Similarly in the Metroidvania genre - 90% of the indie MV’s are chasing Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night. Ancient games that are still more fun than most of the new games we get every single week.

The character move-set and the way it constantly moves the character forward, on top of high mob density in the field suggest hack&slash type game which usually have 1 vs many combat.
On the other hand, the stamina-management combat system and lock-on/tracking system seems to be those of souls-like game which is primarily 1 vs 1 combat.
Same goes for general defensive aspect of the character (relatively low HP, lack of super armor, etc.) which is common in souls-like.
I think that is what makes the game not fun for many players because in many cases you feel like the dude who brought a knife to a gunfight.
Ranged combat classes seem to fare a bit better because then you feel like a dude who actually brought a gun to a gunfight.
Still doesn't change the fact that you are severely outnumbered, and that you are even more of a glass cannon.
The enemy placement (including mob density and variety) is that of hack&slash game. In those type of game, players are bound to get hit quite often, so a hit or two from a basic mob don't tend to be fatal. In this game, a ranged mob of your level can practically two-shots you from long distance.
To me, this game is a collection of mixed feelings. It does something really well (such as map design and exploration), but there are also a lot of things that aren't great and sometimes downright annoying that the game often doesn't let you enjoy those good stuff.

If you are a fan of dark souls and want to seek your teeth in a new game, this is it! Alot of the negative stuff he is mentioning is true, but for me this didint matter because the core gameplay loop they got going on, the rewarding rpg mechanics of lvling up and slowly progressing your build untill your dashing 1000 a hit and the massive linear but interconnected map they designed is really carrying this game beyond small stuff like laggy lockon and some bad enemy placements. Biggest issue I have is lack of vestige seeds to save progress I end up dying having to do large areas from the start. And when I do use a seed, I end up finding a vestige point shortly after making that seed bed useless and I end up with no seed when I actually need it. Also planting new seeds seems to get rid of previous seeds cos some i planted in past areas are gone so when I go back to already visited areas I can only use the main vestiges.

While I understand sometimes part of this is for gameplay reasons...like more dex makes you faster...if that is not obvious fairly early...it just comes off as clunky and sloppy. I like the idea of these games but I can never play them long...stamina for both attacking and defending while ur enemies DO not have that same limitation is already creating extra challenge... for what reason? This is another area, I have to feel that the game Puts the players first...not the AI...and most of these games it favors your Demise.

@@kiekiek what if i tell you i enjoyed LOTF a lot more than Lies of P. because. The combat was better, the performance was great(4k 144fps with FG on, not a single stutter), enemy density was fine, lock on is the exact same as all souls games, Bosses were mid i agree, best level design since Dark Souls 1. There was way less BS in this than Lies of P which EVERY DAMN ATTACK from enemies made me yell COME ON. I beat both games in around 25h each.

First, i do love this game. I have a lot of fun with it. But, when you a doing the quest for the Putrid Mother, your second victim is Gerlinde (the blacksmith that levels you equipment) and if you where to infect her with the umbral parasite she will disappear(die). Which means that if you progress the quest before getting the last rune tablet, you can no longer upgrade equipment.

The game is awesome. Lots of this criticism is valid, but there is a ton to love.
    1. The enemies are very well designed
    2. The level design is immaculate and each area is a ton of fun to navigate, especially with the two world mechanic
    3. The bosses are very easy for veterans of the genre, but all of them were really fun
    4. The art direction is impeccable, best since Elden Ring
    5. The build diversity is real and there are amazing weapons and items for very unique builds.
    6. Spellcasting is incredible. Its better than any other souls game ive played.
There is some BS...the targeting is bad but is usable.
    The bosses are too easy.
There could've been a touch more enemy variety, but there is a lot of unique enemies that you encounter later on.
This reviewer makes some good points but i cant emphasize how good the 6 points ive made here are. Its not just "oh these are pros of the game" its: "these are some of the best things in the genre".

I think releasing as close to Lies of P as they did probably helped a little with sales given everyone was riding high off that phenomenal game, but also a bit detrimental because it's leagues worse and is completely overshadowed. The exploration and visuals is where this game shines. A sprawling interconnected world full of paths and options is exactly why we come back to these games. The dual world system i feel is the best part of traversal. Combat is... Middling to be kind, not hard, not easy, but doable.

  • @Beldhan
    @Beldhan 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

i'm totally with you on the targeting situation of the game that is a nightmare. about the different enemy, some was midboss that do become normal enemy then yes the number of enemy is not that much, but you still have a lot of different enemy.
    a few point tough:
    1) you have a few combo of weapon that unlock new combo when upgraded, some good example are the dual sword of the lightreaper, but you have a few other out.
    2) the vestige seed, don't forget that originally the ng+ was removing the normal vestige and only did leave you with the vestige point you create from the seed (they did change this and each ng+ remove more and more of them) then some are where you can put seed don't make sense in the first run and become normal when you reach the ng+
    3) you know that you have a few different ending and one of them make you fight another end boss than Adyr. even if i'm with you about adyr boss situation.
outside this i have the same grief about the ranged (especially since i did play a paladin, radiant damage + heavy armor + heavy shield, then not optimum for kill ranged) and i have a few grips against the spawn of the enemy in some area the spawn is weird like enemy don't spawn all at the same time leading you to think that the area is safe when actually some take more time to spawn and come bite your ankle when you don't expect them.
for me lord of the fallen is more a 7/10, for a simple reason, not every soullike must have the same difficulty or mechanic for be good. by example i dislike lie of p that i found is artificially harder and don't offer enough exploration and equipement to play around. but it don't make it bad soullike, just not for me. i think lord of the fallen is a good midcore soullike, not as hard as lie of p and some game of the soul franchise. but it's a good middle ground for player that are not super good and still want to enjoy the type of game.
even if i think they need to work on the spawn of enemy and targeting for give a smoother experience.

Small or no space at all to fight and enemies pushing you off or you hitting them when they take a step back or died to your damage over time, they take them down with you. Annoying places to fight with 1-2 archers shooting with 2-4 melee enemies constantly attacking. I died so many times to camera boss and gravity boss

One of the myriad of issues LotF has is that it released off the back of the best souls like ever made in Lies of P, very very tough act to follow. It feels like LotF left out everything that actually makes a Souls good, level design, enemy placement and the deliberate, committed weighty feel of combat. Its like the people who made the game didnt really understand what makes a game in this genre truly exceptional and ended up falling somewhere inbetween a hack and slash and a souls satisfying neither need for me personally. One of my other main gripes is sound design, as a game designer i cannot see how they would not realise the importance of sound and how we react to it, every sound to me felt muted, sloppy and unsatisfying.
These games should be built on the satisfaction of killing, even minor mobs should be satisfying to stab in the back. This game was so unsatisfying to me personally that i started actively avoiding combat the majority of the time.
I dont see the formula being all that difficult to get right so when a studio gets it THIS wrong im just left scratching my head. Im glad the game has its fans but this just was not it for me personally.

Dam 4/10 seems really low to me. I loved this game, did multiple playthroughs and it quickly became one of my favorite souls likes.
Despite a little jank there is a lot to like here. For example no one mentions that this is the first souls like where you can dye your armor which I thought was really cool. I thought the lantern added a unique additional layer to combat with stuff like yeeting big bois off cliffs by throwing their souls off.
The ammunition system felt 10/10 to me because in games like Dark Souls/Elden Ring I go through entire playthroughs without ever using a consumable because "What if I need it?!" which I think this system completely fixed.
The spell casting, while much more limited, felt a lot more intuitive than scrolling up and down through a list of prepared spells. It was nice to always have a quick way to throw out some magic.
The wither mechanic also encouraged you to be offensive, and certain builds could really focus on that.
Unlocking new classes to start with felt really rewarding to me and encouraged me to do more than one run from scratch.
The world felt interconnected and like you had an impact on it. Seeing the beacons light up (or not) as you explored the world felt meaningful. Reading the lore of the previous vestiges as you unlocked them was cool to me and added a lot to the worldbuilding by essentially letting you see the fate of the prior lamp bearers.
Overall it wasn't perfect but I liked it significantly more than Lies of P despite it being less polished. It had a feeling of you being a small being in a grand and dangerous dark fantasy world, something I really only get from Dark Souls.

I fully respect your opinion. Thats why I always watch this channel and always had been very objective, specially you Alex. (I'm an Alex too v:)
I played this game since day 1. I have 3 different characters and the main reason is because of the in game currency stacks so I was able to help donating to unlock the community vaults XD . I do feel sad though you weren't able to get through the amazing experience I went. Maybe it is because this is my second souls like game I play. The other one been Elden Ring. That been said and knowing how hard these games are I watched every corner and every place I could avoiding those traps. I agree the common ending is very anti-climatic but there are memorable bosses for me. Like Pieta (there is even a harder version I recommend you to go through. Wont spoil it for ya v: ) and mostly because of the lore behind them. Bramir is amazing and I still think there is something you can do while he is crying for Sophesia. The big giant "baby" that spits fire all over the place is also heart braking. Some of them do have a repetitive pattern and turn to be a bit predictible. Unfortunately even then, people are still complaining either for the bosses or too crowded reagrding mobs.
I understand your point but to be fair there is also a sense of danger being in Umbral. You really don't want to stay and fight. You want to run. You want to survive.
I dunno... I am trying so hard to not be fan boying here (XD) but I really wish this game was less underrated. For some reason I can not understand fully, this game has a very special place on my heart. Maybe because is my first souls like I try to beat on my own with no guides or anything as such. Maybe it was just the fact I discovered it's secrets and lore by myself.
Hope you can come back one day and have a cool experience. And if not... GGs fam c:
    Regards from Mexico!

This game followed Dark Souls 2's design philosophy which was a game that didn't understand why people liked souls. Which makes since as Miyazaki was more or less hands off with the game's development. Lords of the Fallen made things hard for the sake of it being hard or made them tedious to make it hard instead of following what people wanted from souls. A game that can be difficult but at least its fair. So many souls like only copy the formula of souls but don't ask the why's and they are feel like crap for it.

I agree with alot of this, I've completely avoided starting NG+ til the fixes come in because it just isnt worth bashing my head against the combat system again in order to get a new ending, i really like the world and the lore the game has set up but I often felt i was fighting the game itself just to play, it was a bigger struggle battling the UI than the actual enemies in front of me most of the time. I eventually just found a strong ranged option and proceeded to pick off every enemy i could with target lock or free aimn so that I could engage in actual combat as little as possible. I do this game will get better as you said the company clearly wants to do well and is being receptive to feed back, but it really feels bad having pre-ordered the game for it to release in this state.

They should imbrace the sliding combat and make the combat a run and gun. using combos with the sword or lantern. Make movment flow like a grounded warframe. Make closing the distance with a swing and like a folllowup button combo on the retreat to keep our mind ocupied. Keep dark souls combat by giving enemies teligraphed, reaching attacks or teligraphed attacks on the approach. you have to dodge even multiple times and reangle your initial approach.

BUT, I’m not gonna lie tho, finally getting past certain parts that were kicking my ass before IS super satisfying

Everyone's experience in lords of the fallen involves just rolling past all enemies then fighting a glitched boss headbutting a wall

One more regarding targeting system - parasites can't be focused on. It was very frustrating to flail my slow massive weapon around trying to hit that little annoying blue thing while surrounded by other enemies.

Having just recently beat it, I think the review is fair, while the score is a tad harsh. The things it does well.. it does really well. Though the things that are bad, are annoyingly so - but largely I think they're things that can be tweaked or fixed.
Overall, I enjoyed my time beating it, but feel no desire to play it again. I felt I got my monies worth.

Thanks for keeping it real. Wasn’t going to buy this anyway as the first LoF stunk, but after this year i am super skeptical of 8s and 9s that get thrown around like nothing.

Try out the 2014 Lords Of The Fallen. There are so many nuances to the combat that its far deeper. Just recently discovered it and many of my Souls friends were genuinely surprised. Not to say its perfect but it will surprise you.

Have played 2014 there is no real nuances and I mean I played a lot of it theres really nothing there not really especially compared to the competition at the time. The combat was just most the time garbage. To the point where i beat it once trying to 100% the damn thing and just went back to way better and more complex games. It was a 5/10 at best nothing really good

I kinda like this game, but man it has a lot of issues. I agree with Alex on almost every point made. Range weapon is indeed cool to use in this game which came to me as surprise because usually souls games don't do much with them. Probably only point that is different for me is parry, it felt good until enemies started to make attacks that explode on hit and deny you parry even if you timed it perfectly, grey health didn't bother me that much because it's easily restored if boss isn't trying to cheese you those special attack that looks parriable but actually aren't.
If I would condence opinion on Lords of the Fallen I would say it's one of best games replicating Souls formula that learned ALL bad lessons at the same time, while Lies of P in same boat but learned almost all good lessons. I swear Lords of the Fallen doubled down on so many annoying factors of souls games when they have great game on hands, it feels that game can become omega hit with just adjustments alone (aka can be moded to be amazing without actually changing game completely or in its core)

I love the spellcasting in this game, but having to switch between the lantern and cast/range is just so frustrating/bad design. Nothing quite like trying to throw a fireball when you just had to pull out your lantern.

I were to call this game one thing it would be a “Hack n Slash Soulslike”. With the combat pace and enemy density of a hack n slash but the exploration, punishing nature and difficulty of a soulslike. It just doesn’t meld very well

I truly believe that gave devs are creating games to eliminate speed runs/ No hit run players. Super pinpoint ranged attacks, random items turn into monsters, horrendous jump mechanic, a broken parry system are all in place to stop Speed runners/ No hit runs.

I like a lot here, but I put it down in hopes that they clean it up several patches. But the fact that normal attacking moves you so far that you end up strafed behind characters all the time leaving you exposed is almost a deal breaker.

Lords of the Fallen can be summed up as artificial difficulty. They put the "difficulty" in the wrong places Constant Ganking, sniping and some un-fleshed out combat, parry+execute should feel meaty and rewarding atm it's not even worth it. I liked the umbral mechanic my first few hrs but it became a chore later on with all the back tracking in their rats nest of a level design along with the bombardment of mobs that have an insanely long leash.

The fact the skinny slow dead creatures are more powerful then the boss was enough for me. The dead Knight with fire....ridiculous he had better fire magic then you and again more harder then the actual boss I found myself just running past them as I wanted to heals for what I thought would be a difficult boss. The game crashed 4 times in a row in this one area so I gave up. It wasn't tested at all and I find most game companies need to employe more games not just suits.

  • @twistednwarped314

When I go into umbral, the baddies hide from me. Seriously though, a quick tip is that if in umbral you don't need to suck the "Fairies", you can just smack them once and they die. Makes some of those dumb fights much more manageable.

    True story:
Someone posted a comment on another video saying something to the effect of “Ppl hating on LOTF prolly just peace’d out after the first frame rate drop” sorta implying ppl didn’t give it ‘enough time for a fair chance.’
I told him ppl like me played vanilla Dark Souls 1 and put up with 15 FPS Blighttown. Frame rate has *_nothing_* to do with the hate.
He then tagged me back, apologized, admitted he was wrong, and listed an assload of complaints.

For me, I refunded it. I wanted my first experience with a Soulsborne game to be good, even great, but it did not feel optimized on xbox. Even on performance mode, there were times fps could drop to what seemed like single digit, or it could run stable but look like a watercolor painting. I hope with some patches it can become good one day. I used the money to buy Elden Ring, and goddamn that is phenomenal!
