    Well, reviews are out and...
Although the foundations for a good combat system are theere, it seems my points were undermined by a simplistic approach to enemy design, which hurt the late game (source: @SkillUp's review). Or maybe not? @LukeStephens said, in his impressions, this weakness was conditional to the warrior class and its power progression. So the combat works... most of the time?
When it comes to story, this is also hit or miss. Although it might be good on the macro level (overarching narrative, world, plot, etc.), it might not be on the micro (line by line writing, dialogue, exposition, presentation, etc.), or so says @CohhCarnage in his video.
Reviews are subjective, however, and the only consensus seems to be that there is no consensus. Although I have not played it, watching the videos listed below leads me to believe the game is, as @AsmonTV put it, "fine". Not good, not great, just fine. I leave this comment pinned for everyone who might somehow watch this, and not any reviews from bigger creators. DA:TV appears to be a bit of a mixed bag, and whether its contents fit well with you is only something you can decide. I hope this helps with that.

No one is saying a tonal shift is new. We're saying we dont like it. But the issues aren't just with the art direction and tone - which granted, are horrible. More issues compound this: Dummyfying combat by limiting only three active abilities (an attempt to mass effect-ify the game, no doubt). No longer letting us control our companions. Only allowing 3 imported decisions. There are just so many dumb decisions they made for this game, Ill never understand. About a year ago Bioware laid many of its senior devs (likely because they were the most expensive) so in all honesty, it makes sense this travesty is the best the leftover devs could come up with. And to top all this off, they turn around and hire hans zimmer for the composer instead of the inquisition composer Trevor Morris. Like come on, i can guarantee Hans zimmer is more expensive..

"Dummyfying combat by limiting only three active abilities" imo a game's combat isn't only about the abilities, if that's the case then Fromsoft's souls games aren't going to be as revered for its combat as they are.

    • @JenniLightrunner
      @JenniLightrunner หลายเดือนก่อน +2

tbf I NEVER controlled my companions anyway so doesn't affect me. The combat seems better to me. The story is always the primary focus in dragon age NOT gameplay, when you do think about it, many of those old choices are completely irrelevant to what's happening. if the arishok was alive he'd probably had been excecuted anyway and sten probably lost command long ago, zevran already lost his leadership of antiva in da2 cuz he's on the run again. It's giving so much more elf lore and with Ghili'nain it's gonna get so grotesque and dark.
The only thing Origins did good was the lack of restrictions on classes with duel wield warriors and armored mages. Origins combat took FOREVER. DA2 had too many damage sponges. Inquisition was fine but also the da2 problem

Mage spells used to be an overabundance! Now you don't even have 20% of the abilities that the mages used to have options with.. they did it with Inquisition as well. They turned the Primal tree which used to Encompass fire ice electric and earth, and spread it out until that was basically all you had. Plus a little bit of the spirit tree. You used to have primal, spirit, entropy, creation, and then the basic mage abilities. Each of those had 16 options!
In DAI, you could not even allocate attribute points! They mixed it into the already barebone ability trees...
Then, you had 7 specializations (counting Awakening) of which you could spec into 3! Granting 4 new abilities each! Including passive abilities, and sustained abilities..
What happened to skills?! Alchemy, Lockpicking, Survival, Pickpocket, Silver Tongue, etc?!
A 2nd weapon slot so your melee can swap to ranged in a bottleneck, or doorway? Gone! Choice for armor type? Gone! Want your warrior to dual wield longsword/mace/axe? Gone! Give your rogue a shield, or a full sized weapon? Nope!
    This is not Dragon Age

either way it doesnt matter DA2 were made in 18 months and they still managed to get atleast most common ones yes ik many got cut but if they made DA2 within 18 motnhs and had enough time to make new particle effects and all of it for the spells that got included but didnt bother trying to do it with inquisition which was made with 5 years we ever see even half of DAO spell list?? personally there is no way even if bioware survives veilguard and then there is the fact of only 3 hotkeys

@@BlueFire015 Lightning drains stamina, and could be useful for melee characters, to reduce their power attacks. Cold damage was weak against some of the veil demons.. Fire as always is just pure damage.
Tempest, mixed with Blizzard, to create "Storm of the Century", and its a powerful spell combo.
Ofcourse there is some redundancy, and some spells have clear alternatives. But I liked having them. More options to class builds is never a bad thing, imo. Origins is in my top 3, all time favorite games. I replay that game every year pr so. (14 times in total so far, and 7 or 8 times for Awakening). Even the standalone dlcs I have replayed twice.
Yes, some of it was also cut in DA2.. That game was designed as an action game, and was quite divisive. I itialky, yiu had to attack for every single basic attack. It wasnt until later, after much backlash, that Bioware added the auto attack function. Theres not even a tactical combat system.. Origins was designed as a proper crpg. To this day, I still dislike DA2.. Inquisition was so bad, that it actually made me sort of appreciate da2. But I just finished it, for the 2nd time ever, and still found it unenjoyable.
I quisition didnt even offer 1/5 of the spells and abilities from Origins.. I despise Inquisition.. That game is what officially ended Bioware for me.

Who the Inquisitor romanced (not important), whether the Inquisition was downsized or disbanded entirely (not important, since the Inquisition isn't active anymore anyway after nine years), and whether the Inquisitor vowed to redeem Solas or stop him by any means (also not important since the Inquisitor won't be making that choice now, Rook will). I’m excited for this game. I like that they are focusing on narrative and after hearing a description of the relationship mechanics, I’m really excited to see how it was implemented. I’ve liked every DA game and the combat has not been the thing that draws me to any of them. So as long as I get a good story with good characters, I’m here for it. Good combat would be a bonus.
As a side note, there are a bunch of weirdos trolling around in the comment sections on any positive video. Some fellow really said “Remember what we’re fighting for.” What? “The devs don’t know what they’re doing because there is no blood magic?” (Somebody skipped some entries in the franchise, obviously.) And for some people the qunari foreheads are going to stop them from buying a game? Did they play the rest of the series only because they examined character foreheads and determined that they were satisfactory? Did the hands on any character in the series not bother you? Because they bothered me. Not enough to not play the games. Just enough for me to note that the hands look bad. There’s also the “The game isn’t gritty enough because there’s no painted on blood splatter which is a clear indicator of how mature a story is” thing. Some people think all the games should be brown. And also “Don’t preorder so we can send a clear and unambiguous message to the devs that we don’t want pansexual characters.” How effective do you think that’s going to be?

THANK YOU for this. I've been needing some positivity! I love all the games, and none of the news or controversies which have come out have deterred me. The combat looks fun to me, the character creator looks good, and, as long as the characters and the story are well done, I'm ready! The only thing I was a little bummed out about was the limited world state...BUT, I'll take it if it means a tighter, more cohesive story. If the time that would have gone into writing in a reference line or codex entry goes instead into another interaction with Harding (or Manfred, for that matter) I'll accept the trade off. I also agree that the tone shift happened in Dragon Age 2. If you enjoyed 2 or 3, 4 should be enjoyable. People are saying that Veilguard has too much of a Marvel feel...forgetting the scene where Meredith jumps twenty feet into the air, starts glowing red, and then turns into a statue. As for Flemeth, she kind of looks like Scarlet Witch, haha. If Dragon Age became more "Marvel like," that ship sailed a long time ago.
I might be biased because, like you, I prefer faster combat over tactical combat, but the shift isn't surprising. There's less of a shift between Inquisition and Veilguard than there was between Origins and 2.
As for the limited choices, they could address those in DLC (there could be a whole DLC exploring what happened to the Hero of Fereldan, for example). Some might complain about their choices being behind a paywall, but, honestly, I'd rather pay $20 for a fleshed out story, and a proper pay off for my choices, than just getting a codex entry.

A valid take, but don't discount the takes of people discrediting the combat. Some people loved the crpg approach the game had, especially Orgins. With BG3's release, despite the "wokeness" and identity politics infecting it, it was a great game for those who value the true to form crpg from tabletop experience, even though Larian took some unfortunate creative liberties.
The only reason Origins right now is so great, is because the other Dragon Ages after it have been subpar, with each new entry worse than the last. Whether it's story, combat or political messaging, the earlier the game, the better it used to be.

Dragon Age really?". I love every entry despite their flaws, but it always felt to me that it's a series that never found its footing unlike Mass Effect.
It's a series that's never been consistent apart from the lore. The combat system, the art direction (apart from the angular visual language that's been established in DA2), the music, etc... are always different. The only thing that's been a constant is the tactical pause. There's always been a tactical pause in one form or another and Veilguard is no exception.

They were never mindless., they are driven by instinct to seek out the old gods, ancient dragons of unfathomable power that lay imprisoned beneath the Earth, in order to corrupt them into Archdemons. Oh if you want to make a lore accurate Qunari mage they should mute as the Qunari cut out the tongues of mages. To me the "DA DNA" as IGN put it has always been an interesting story, interesting characters and interesting choices (made in the game I am currently playing) that have interesting consequences. So far, everything I have seen indicates that these are very much present in Veilguard. Changing the combat system - which I see as a good thing because combat has never been a highlight in a DA game for me - does not mean that any of the things I view as "DA DNA" has to be changed.

Also not sure what you mean with "making lore accurate Qunari mages", if you mean making your protagonist a Qunari mage, the Qunari that you can control in game are Tal Vashot, meaning those living outside the Qun. It wouldn't make sense to create Player Character a Qunari that follows the Qun regardless of them being a mage or not since they can't act freely. I doubt any Dragon Age game will let you be a Qun follower since the setting states they're bad.

im gonna ignore the identity politics cause its politics and therefore divisive what is undeniable is that 1 three hotkeys is a joke and its a horrible thing and to blame this on action combat which some do is also annoying cause they seem to forget Bethesda have used action combat in elder scrolls morrowind and oblivion are very deep so action combat isnt inherently worse its just devs normally just doing action and being lazy and not making it deeper not the fault of the system itself just the devs, there is nothing wrong with liking crpg and to say that DAO is even a pure CRPG is also kind of a joke cause u can play that game like an action game just fine in most cases.
the artstyle okay well i would hate it less if it looked better but to me idk it jsut looks off i mean i like DA2 and that was quite cartoony in a way but still okay atleast considering the development time, veilguard have no such excuse and what they did with the qunari i mean in DA2 they looked amazing and then in 2024 we see that its not good... but uknow i do wish we seen DAI graphics jsut alot rougher and alot nicer but thats just me.

BECAUSE IT DOES.. and one of the 3 goddamn thing is who u slept with i mean srsly dont get me wrong that is bad cause they havent accounted for any other important thing otherwise it would be a nice little personal touch i mean how morrigan talks about the warden in inquisition is heartwarming considering what she used to be like but in this its just....

I "Mourned" Dragon Age Origins long ago. For two or three years I was a bitter asshole lol, but after I tried DA2 and Inquisition and enjoyed them for what they were. Part of me is still pissed off at how everything that was hinted at in the Awakening DLC of Origins was thrown out the window in the sequel and how it happened again with the "Mage Rebellion" that starts at the end of DA2 getting solved in the first quest of Inquisition like it's nobody's business. I'm happy that at least Veilguard stops fucking around and is a genuine sequel to what was set up on Tresspaser.
What I think has hurt Dragon Age the most is not having a real interconecting plot. Mass Effect is as messy as Dragon Age, every sequel has the reapers do whatever because they wanted to make the games more like Gears of Wars or because the fans guessed the ending like it happened with Lost, but you had the same Shepard in the three games and all companions that were alive returned even if you could not control them. Meanwhile on Dragon Age I have to endure the protagonist from the first game being in a "secret quest" because they are scared of making them come back (and also because some idiots decide to let them die).

Honestly this reminds me a lot of back when Call of Duty Infinite Warfare was announced and pretty much the entire internet decided it was awful game months before it launched. Without seeing any gameplay hating it just off the fact that it was another Sci-Fi Call of Duty which nobody wanted at the time, especially not the COD fanbase. Now sure people are entitled to feel how they feel but so many videos and comments I've seen the last few months basically proclaiming that DA The Veilguard as a terrible game before the vast majority of people have even had a chance to sit down and play it. This seems to have really become a thing the last few years were people will denounce a game after having only seen a cinematic trailer if the art style isn't to their liking or something. Granted the reason people do that is as gamer's we have been put through a lot of BS these last few years, but I think it's left a lot of people jaded. I mean at least play a game for a while before saying it's a failure. Besides I think most people don't realize what a trainwreck this game's development has been, pretty sure they started work on it shortly after wrapping up work on Trespasser, during which time there have been multiple versions of Dragon Age 4 including one that was a live service multiplayer game which thankfully got scraped after Anthem was a huge failure. Pretty sure EA wanted Bioware to make all their games (Dragon Age and Mass Effect) live service. So now we have The Veilguard which even if it isn't to everyone's tastes, it's single player, it's a story-focused, choice-based RPG, they got rid of pointless MMO-open world aspect that honestly made playing Inquisition a chore most of the time. People should also remember Bioware's history, sure they're aren't a lot of choices carried over from Inquisition but that happened with the Mass Effect games as well. I think most Dragon Age fans need to realize how much worse this game could have turned out than the one we are getting.

No way to tell without a personal, hands-on experience or a trusted reviewer's feedback, though.

I feel like every time a game comes out a very *particular* crowd gathers around it to throw tomatoes, no matter what game it is. It makes me wonder what games these gamers actually play. So far "no open world" (which means better pacing for narrative and at the very least much less collectibles and redundant fetch quests) is a music to my ears and action combat showcase seemed cool and deep enaugh with different builds, synergies and ability to reassign ability points without the need to respec. My only concern is that "wokeness" is really strong in this one, but so far it is evident only in characters (appearances and backstories). Grim Dark isn't the only way to do fantasy, and this looks like something I wouldn't mind playing with my niece around when I'm babysitting, on a no romance run of course, no spicy scenes with little eyes around. Ppl actually talking about and saying how its a lot better than what was introduced just says leagues on how marketing wasnt sure on how to advertise it. They really wanted to showcase the combat cuz thats something new also to hopefully bring in some new eyes, still messed up with that. Then when it came to what DA as an IP is known for which is the story and dialogue they just completely butchered. These newer videos of ppl that had hands on with the game is doing keagues in putting things into perspective than what they have done unfortunatley. I dont even care bout DA as a franchise m mainly care for ME, and for me at least veilguard has caught my eye from what ppl are saying. Mainly cuz of dialogue and actions. I have played all 3 DA games and expansions. I liked all of them but they all had flaws as well. But the story was the biggest thing for me. I am also a straight male, married with kids. There has been LGBT characters in all the games but they never really through it in your face. My hope is that they don’t do it now either. I don’t care if there are gay people in the game because they are in real life. However the graphics here for the characters do look a bit kiddie. Also would it kill them to make some good looking women in this game. Neve is ok looking but the others look hideous. Especially sense they keep making a big deal about romance in this game. Can they just pay some straight guy like $5,000 for 2 hours to go in and make a hot chic character model?? Also the “3 choices” that was leaked is not good. I think it would have been ok if they would have made it 50 years or so in the future and not happen right after Trespasser, but because they did it should have more of your choices from the other 3 games.

Desasturation is not good design, it's a skill issue. Color is not the enemy, it creates more interesting visual storytelling. Visual Realism is boring and makes games look the same. Cartoonish visuals are not all for kids, they create a unique visual signature. Realistic styles age really badly in comparison to chartoonish styles. If you don't understand, Halo was considered Realistic when it originally came out. The people who blindly hate this game, spouting off false or bad faith arguments need to go touch grass. I takes so much energy to hate for hatred's sake. If the game happens to be good and but you've convinced yourself it'll be bad, you'll likely still have a bad experience.
I'll admit I didn’t like the style at first and I agree with the head size, but I all so think the fan 'fix' makes them too small. I liked the first add with the fun character intros. It was nice to see the characters feel so happy and alive... because I'm a monster that enjoys seeing happy characters have to face dark realities as it makes for a more interesting set of tone shifts. Characters that are already sad/grumpy who face darkness are boring, *cough* Kratos, and/or annoying edge lords. The style grew on me with the game play showcases and I got excited. You don’t have to like or be excited for the game, but unless you've played it, you cant say definitively what the game is or isn't.

I liked the twists and turns in emotion and story through the characters and MY choice and how it interacted with them. I see Veilguard and feel that not only slipping, but possibly being ripped from the series in what, let's face it, is probably the end of it.

Okay i hear ya, your points make sense but i still dont like the cartoony shift from the brutal massacre that origin/2 was, inquisition tuned it down but it still was pretty good, i dont want a world full of woke agenda, so i'll wait until the streamers play it and watch how it is before i can judge it properly . Pretty good video for a small youtuber ! keep it up !

To all of the people dissing it for being “woke”. Wait until the game is out. How dare a different geographical region of Thedas have a different proportion of minorities lol. And the sexuality was never really an issue in previous games, many people liked Dorians character. If it shoved stuff down your throat, then you have a reason to get pissed, but please actually wait for the game to come out

Woke now and woke later. Diversity and sex naturally occurring aren't the problems; it's the activism of identity politics that's infected gaming. You're misguided.

I just think judging stuff preemptively doesn’t help anyone. I hate when stuff gets pushed down our throats, but like wtf do you mean it’s like that visually. I swear this could be better than inquisition and y’all wound play it because they used a girl with purple hair for gameplay (something that is customizable and you don’t have to do)

By themselves, no, that's why I actually go around multiple places, and some of y'all aren't doing as much as you think.
Older games? They both just came out recently, and um, yeah, you can do that. You're only saying it can't because it partially proves you wrong and thinks that your mob speaks for everyone.
Nope you are the vocal minority no one takes you seriously especially when you just go concord all the time, that game was going to be dead even if it didn't have dei and tons of people didn't even know it existed nor even cared for it. It didn't come onto my radar until y'all kept talking about it.
Wait, you think that they delayed the games and are going to remove elements because of you guys, hahahhhaahaa.
The dev team has been trying to get ubisoft to delay assassin's creed shadows for months now to give it more time, not because of you guys. lol, do you think they will remove all that stuff in a few months? Nope
Wait, you think it's been delayed indefinitely? Lmao, no, it's coming out in February
So whatever "proof" you think you have you don't sorry so sad.
While I may not be the biggest fan of forced dei as along as I can control it I don't care, bioware has been for dei in games and outside of them for over 20 plus years now and well I ignored those elements in previous games will do so again
