The true horror of Dead Space IS being an engineer on a 62 year old ship that is in disrepair. Compared to that the Necromorphs are more an outlet for your frustration when you finish fixing something only for something else on the other side of the ship to need repairs.

I have played the original trilogy at least 5 times. The fact that this game managed to actually make me feel stressed scared and helpless in a setting that I know like the palm of my hand had me speechless. This game is a master piece

I saw a clip of the remake where a dude was admiring the environment and wondered why Isaac kept looking down and to his side in-game. It turns out the “dead” necromorph wasn’t so dead after all, what a subtle level of detail to add
That‘s exactly what Leon and Ashley did in RE4. Dead Space was heavily inspired from that game so yeah they took that subtle and useful mechanic and implemented it in the game
Idk if it works on PC but on console if you slightly move the left stick you can see Isaac's upper body start to move in that direction before actually moving. Idk why I thought that was really cool

I remember playing the first game at 2am, lights off, sound card hooked up to my surround sound system. I lasted about 30mins before taking a break. First and only game to truly ever scare me and it was the audio and atmosphere that done it. Amazing game!
And now it's even scarier ! Lmaoo I feel like any 11 year old kid plays this gonna be traumatized forsure 🤣
Lol it was one of the first games i ever played after buying the 7.1 surround sound turtle beaches and all of the shit in the vents as yoy walk past, the creaking ship and hums and clacking of mechanical doors and parts moving were like you were actually there

This game and Alien: Isolation have been the only games to truly terrify me (in a good way!). I wanted The Evil Within to be that too, but it was just a tad too over the top for my liking and the story made absolutely no sense.
@@Survivor_of_DMVdrivers Yeah Alien Isolation was good too, but it was a different kind of scary. More a tension feeling of where the hell is it? While DS is more EVERYTHING from sound to atmosphere to the woman on the alert system, the sounds of the doors, all of it is terrifying lol.

I didn’t hate the Callisto Protocol, I was just surprised that Dead Space felt like the newest entry into a franchise whereas the Callisto Protocol looked like it would take a decade to get to that level. Even the writing in Dead Space is fantastic.

They even had all of isaac's lines recorded twice depending on if he has low health or not, it's amazing.
Actually 3, another when he’s out of breath while talking. Plus some dialogue changes whether you did side missions or collect the market fragments in ng+

I NOTICED THAT!! at one point during a convo i was a yellow, i got hit and it went to red and i could hear Isaac grunting and straining as he talked, it was AWESOME.
I think my favorite is if you do the side mission for Mercer. Not only do you get the proto stasis, but when Issac kills the Hunter, instead of yelling "DIE!!!" He says soberly "He can't hurt you anymore."

This game was one of the biggest surprises I've ever experienced in the last decade or so. I expected something that would only be average in comparison to the OG, but it turned out to be just as good if not better than the first game in terms of actually letting Issac talk as well as implementing the new director system.
I love Sci-Fi horror and played the original Dead Space when it came out. I didn't expect the remake to be this good to be honest. My early game of the year right now.
After Calisto, i expected there to be a season pass or atleast microtransactions. I was and still am very happy with what they have done as the og DS is my all time favorite horror game along side the sequel

The game does horror tension masterfully. You get this sense of relief when you get through a room, only for it to be immediately replaced with dread for what might be waiting for you in then next room.
"Entered Vaccum. Beep beep beep." It makes me stressed because the sound design makes it sound so serious. Well it is 😂
Small tip, if only against one standard necromorph you can just spam melee and stun it infinitely unlike the original game where they block it with their blades at random times.
once you kill it with melee only (no stasis, nothing) it gives you a reward and then ANOTHER if you stomp it after. So you get double rewards for purely melee'ing a single enemy.
Just make sure its the only one ...

The moment when Dr Mercer uses stasis on Issac is top tier cinematic gameplay, I was not expecting that at all, genius how they let you control the camera during dialogue moments like that
Even though it was a change to the original, the company knew how to add it properly. Fantastic.

Otherwise, there's too much tonal shifting in the remake and lack of attention to subtle details here and there.

Honestly I was expecting a boss battle with him. Would have been a cool mechanic
i feel a badge of honour that you enjoyed my all time favourite horror game! I am a Dead Space Veteran, so when i first played the remake i chose hard mode. And oh boy! I was so surprised at all the nice changes and redesigns. I was dreading the first ADS section of the thinking it was the same, but i was pleasantly surprised to see that it was made more interactive, easy, and hell they even fit a side quest in that area! This game is a remake done 200% right! and i hope EA sees this, cause they have asked if the fans want the other 2 games remade. i say that if the same team does it and gives them the same amount of passion and love, it will be a full revival of the series. That is when EA will realize that Dead Space 4 needs to happen.
They can remake the second one with the greatest stomp of all time that causes your character to spew various profanities the longer you do it which if they did wrong would be disgraceful.
There is no Dead Space 3, though. Everyone knows that.
@@cornbredx I for one enjoy dead space 3. My head cannon as to why it's not at all scary and more action focused is because it's the 3rd time both Isaac and the player have faced off against the Necromorphs. Both Isaac and us have witnessed the horror that the markers are capable of. And we both put our best stomping boots on cause Isaac and the players are ready to kick ass.

@Crimnox exactly, i thing one of the biggest problems for the third game was that the scary factor of the first and second already weared off and not exactly by bad execution from the studio or something like that, is just that the player is already familiar with it , I really hope that we get a remaster of all of them and finally a conclusion because GOD the way that it was left of in a cliffhanger was very sad
I saw that EA sent surveys to people asking if they would be interested in DS2 and DS3 remakes along with a possible next installment. I for one really want the other 2 remade like this as the narrative team comes up with DS4's story, so they can start development right away after DS3 Remake releases and if they can get some of the OG devs to work on it it would be even better or at least get their plans for the story of DS4 because they were really interesting like how they teased Brethren Moons were actually keeping something even worse at bay that even they were afraid of. That literally sends chills down my spine.
This remake was stellar! (Pun extremely intended). It's rare for me to go straight into new game + to max everything out and do a full second playthrough, but I sure did with this one! I even got the secret new game + ending. This was easily the most fun I've had with gaming so far this year!
Love how no matter what year it is or how much older I get Angry joe and the team still feel right at home.
When the OG Dead Space came out in 2008, it was literally the scariest game out there. I remember having nightmares as a teenager and struggling so hard to end each section because of the stress. I get that newer generations might not have the same experience, but at least they can get a more polished masterpiece with a lot of added content and reworked scenes.

Same here...back in the days this game made me sweat. I always played it late at night in complete darkness with volume at a little higher level than normal with a large set of speakers behind my back. The fear was real. I was afraid of every corner in the game. Every time i saw the loading screen, the ishimura logo, I asked my self, why do I play this? I dont want to play it. I dont want to piss my pants 3rd night in a row. And that HUD. The game was so immersive. It gave u that feeling of just being there struggling to survive a nightmare. Anyway...I played it every night despite the fear because the design, the atmosphere were just awesome, like in the alien movies or Event Horizon or...you know like good old sifi space horror movies. Man...to this day I dont remember anything more intense. For me an absolute master piece, a classic that every fan of horror and sci-fi must play. And now we have this awesome remake... Damn, pissed my pants again.

Bro I played it at age 9 in 09💀 shit murdered my nights for a while.
As big of a horror fan I am, it’s still baffling to me how I had never even heard of Dead Space before this remake. I played it with my headset and damn near shit my pants with in 20 mins of gameplay. Jump scares, the atmosphere breeds paranoia, weapons are so damn awesome… game of the year if highly likely
It makes me so damn happy as a dead space veteran to see you give this game a 10/10. I’ve played the 3 games regularly all these years, and it’s my favorite game series. I’ve played the original at least once a week since I was 8 years old haha. Best games I’ve ever played.
The biggest difference in the horror aspect is the lighting. The remake is so damn dark that you actually need to use a flashlight to see most of the time. It’s oddly realistic and scarier.
Sound design needs alot of credit too. So many background screams and gurgles you always had tension even if no monsters were around
Small correction Joe, Dead Space 1 didn't have Zero G like this, you walked around with Mag boots on metel surfaces jumping from surface to surface. Dead Space 2 was the first time Zero G was introduced where you move freely on jet boots.
No it had zero G it didn’t have thrusters. Also you weren’t stuck on a path that’s Ratchet and Clank. You could super man jump to pretty much anywhere in the room.

Fun fact I pointed out to a few friends, and I'm surprised more people didn't see this. But when you first arrive you can look up and see a huge lit USG ISHIMURA, which everyone sees. Now later in the game..... Go back out and look at it again. Some of the letters have burned out, leaving only US IS U lit up. What an amazing creative creepy addition.

I'm really glad to hear that this remake has been received positively by so many people. It really is amazing what the devs did with the new approaches they made while still remaining faithful to the original game such as the freedom to explore using the tram.
They did an amazing job. I hope they remake the 2nd game in the future!
Some of the devs who worked on the og games worked on this remake, and I could really feel their catharsis when playing. Like, years after EA ruined DS3 and gutted Visceral, it's so nice to see Dead Space in true form as a proper horror game again. And all the annoying, tedious bullshit from the original is gone and replaced with far better mechanics that elevate the horror.
It's the same feeling I had when playing Resident Evil 7. RE5 and RE6 wanted to be action games, and they lost the horror elements that made Resident Evil what it is. Then RE7 comes around and it's entirely a confined to a single space, a literal evil residence. Classic Resident Evil was finally back, and now Dead Space is too!

I remember the original being one of THE most atmospheric games I'd ever played, how they've turned it up a notch is incredible, truly a masterpiece of a remake! Incredible visuals, gameplay and sound design, what more could you ask for 👌
This game is simply amazing!
And I would like to share two of my best moments:
In one of the sequences where you get grabbed by the tentacle, with the new memory space the remake has, the tentacle doesn’t simply vanish like it did in DS08. So, after freeing myself from it, I noticed a box in the corner. As I go towards it, the now rag doll remains of the tentacle catches on Isaac’s foot and flips up behind him. From my perspective, it looked like the arm of another enemy coming to get me, and I was genuinely freaked out because I had very little health left. The intensity director wasn’t even responsible for that!!
My other instance of this game being simply, shockingly fantastic was when I was in a fight with one of the necros that transforms corpses. I ran over to it, shot it to stun it, and then just stared ROCKING the stomp button, making SURE that thing was a dead, bloody pancake. I said, in real life, “Fuck you….” And Isaac, in game, inadvertently finished for me by saying “you piece of shit!”
I just had to stand there for a minute and appreciate how much personality and character this game has, on top of its Uber satisfying gameplay loop.
I was expecting 8-9 out of ten but when I saw the score I said WOAHHH joe you really enjoyed this one. You guys are hilarious and can’t wait for the next skit on hogwarts and that review! Keep it coming boys

Dead space is my all time favorite horror game. I use to come home from work with a six pack and play it in the dark with with the surround sound cranked up and headphones on.

I remember playing DS for the very first time.. in the dark. That first mission after docking freaked the bejezus out of me. I loved it! The DS trilogy is absolutely one of my favorites. I hope they do a remaster of the next 2 as well!

Back in 2008, I couldn't play for more than two hours at a time. The tension was too much. Even though I didn't actually die more than a few times, the feeling that I could get ambushed and swarmed by these creepy loud fuckers was enough. This time, I already knew their tricks, but it still was a great experience to revisit.
I am playing ng+ and they still scare me cuz they keep coming from behind
@HA-PEACEFUL Usually, that only happened to me when I was preoccupied with their loud buddies. Playing it with headphones helps a lot.

I did prefer the boss fight in that circular room where he has to run along the cylindrical floor rather than here where he just floated in zero G.
But yes overall, it was a brilliant remastery. And the graphics looked spectacular.
In the first 2008 version I did prefer the sound track, and I also got what you got regarding the wifey being more desperate to see you again….whereas in here she’s like - oh hi Isaac. But they definitely made this new version much harder than the predecessor.
One thing that was annoying in the first was that you couldn't tell how you were doing vs it. What would have been useful is if each time you had destroyed all three tentacles, then when the creature spawned their replacements it would retract slightly, revealing several small compartments that have ammo/health in them. This would give the player a good idea how they are doing. Finally it would be a large tumor-beast chasing you around, and when you do enough damage to it the remaining tentacle, the tentacle slithers through a hole in the wall to escape.
Love the intensity director, makes replayability so much better. Never felt safe walking into a room, even if I already cleared it.
Every game needs a similar random element rather than complete scripting. It's essential for replayability.
As someone who just 100% the game, this review is gonna be killer
After playing the huge disappointment that was the Calisto Protocol, I could say that I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this remake. I had only played Dead Space 2 prior and I gotta say I really enjoyed this experience.
Oh I remember pre ordering this game on Amazon nov 16th and it was supposed to come on it’s release date but it didn’t it made me want my money back!
Dead space remake made me happy without any arguments and disappointments!

This is the equivalent of the movie Alien for gaming. Pure masterpiece. I played the original and loved it. I may just have to pick this one up as well.
As someone who never played the original I gotta say this was a fun game. Graphically top notch and gameplay was fun. Enemies varied and some frustrating sections but ultimately worth the buy and time.
Great. Now I've got to buy it again. Glad you enjoyed it. The original was so good back in the day. I used to only play late at night. Adds to the atmosphere.
Amazing review, hardly a surprise that this is your first 10/10 legendary of the year and bound to make your top 10 this year for best games. This game well deserves it, truly a masterpiece of its own kind and waaaaaaay more horror driven and focused than Callisto Protocol will ever be. That game may have had the graphics, but this game has the gameplay, and we all know which of the two reigns supreme over the other as a retrospective example.
My only hope is that the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake can set the bar as high as this game as that is the game that actually got me into this kind of genre, so the Angry Joe show giving RE 4 remake anywhere close to this rating would be a dream come true.

@@themightycrixus1131 You make it sound like remakes don't need any effort or deserve any praise at accomplishing amazing results. Was WarCraft 3 good? Yeah and we got WarCraft 3: Reforged which was a huge disaster. There was this unique comic style first person shooter called XIII made in 2003 that pretty much is 10/10 game. Remake was a big disaster as well. Remake of a good game doesn't result in success.
In DS Remake they remade areas, remade some guns, remade many story stuff, new puzzles or mechanics and etc. So much was changed that the game almost reaches the line where we could call it completely new game. Like I didn't know about it until I read comments here but it seems main character has dialogue recorded in 3 states like when he is exhausted after running or injured. So much has changed and nothing ruins the experience but improves it a lot. That takes some hard work and talent.

So good to see this game doing justice! I started with the second and played the third part and i also liked both of them the 3 being less scarier but being more action focused and the 2. part being all spooky and terrifying but still adrenalin packed. Love this series and you to AJ crew and the community behind it. Just legendary :)
Dead Space has always been one of my favorite series of all time, next to Metroid and Halo (Ironically both sci fi games) And so seeing the Remake being in development i was a bit worried at first, but seeing how much the devs at Motive truly cared for the game and how it was panning out. I was beyond hyped, and let me tell you the Intensity director is insane. It still scares me and sends me chills because i don't know what to expect, even at scripted moments. Dead Space 1 and 2 were both scary games, but after you beat them for the first time. The only scary elements are the occasional sneaky slashers and running out of ammo. But here in the Remake you can't rely on your memory because you can never be sure if you'll encounter the same thing again. This is what a horror game should be like, always keeping you on your toes and keeping you nervous. Because i ran into this issue even while playing Resident Evil games, which are also one of my favourite series of all time. The idea of not knowing what to expect, is the true horror element to me. Because nothing is more scary in a movie or video game, then the element of surprise.
Dead Space Remake really embarrassed Glen Schofield so badly, EA really rub it in his face as the Remake was well done over his Callisto Protocol
I loved the original game, i completed it quite a few times and i absolutly love what they have done with this remake. The Plasma cutter is better than ever and the sounds using headphones is awesome and caused me a needed change of pants a few times. I hope they remake DS 2 and to this quality too. The scene with nicole in the lift has always stuck with me
Pipe dream but I hope tripods are used more in that game. Seems odd they made this cool enemy but because its role overlapped with the brute, we barely see tripods.
I love it when AJ go out of character at the beginning of videos, acting all nice and smiling to his subscribers.
As a maintenance Engineer.. I found the opening hilarious! I also still remember being told to start the reactor/spinning gravity generator back in the original.. and I was like.. "Gee, thanks Kendra.. for the help." XD

It truly feels like the original was the last time a really good Sci-fy horror game came out. Fear was another but thats even older. I'm so glad they did this, other game developers need to be taking some SERIOUS NOTES here. This is how it's done, no stupid jump scares where you're just using loud sounds to startle the player, but actual scary moments where you as a player feel so immersed that you're truly afraid of an outcome. I'd love to be able to play more of these games in the future if done right.
Also regarding weapons another very welcome change from the original is there are no more empty nodes on the upgrade path, cause they were always pretty scarce so I always thought it sucked youd just have to waste a bunch of em. Great remake
This game has given the respect that it deserves since 2008. The devs really did a great awesome job making this remake super dope and better than ever! I hope they do even better when they remake the 2nd and the 3rd games. I really love this franchise if done right. This game is worth buying and it’s good to see an old friend brought back. Legendary status indeed and a great review.
@Michael Lochlann Hell yeah, as long as they stick to their guns and deliver us another banger of a remake game that lives up to their first solid attempt. And if they remake the third game(which was a little bit off the ball) it can finally settle the story to a very good conclusion. The third was a bit meh but wasn’t as good though. But yeah.

As someone who is content with PS4, Dead Space got me hittin' my wallet with the "Is it time to upgrade?"
I thought I was content to, but then I got the game and I can’t imagine not buying it. Like right after I beat it, I went back to play it again.
You can play it on PC though. It's suprisingly polished even on weaker hardware.
I'm so happy you gave it a 10/10. I loved this game to death and already played it twice! What a masterpiece.
I loved this game when it first came out, felt like resi evil in space. I remember using the heath mechanic on your back, on the spines of my necrons, with scorpion green, to make it easier to see which squad they belonged to from the back (1 stripe for 1st squad, etc).
Will be one of the first games I'm going get with my PS5.
Holy crap the HUD on your wrist looked flawless. Exactly like what was in the game. Not sure why, but that was kind of mind blowing No stuttering or anything. Talk about top notch editing and quality even on the small things. I know you guys work hard on that so just know that it is definitely noticed.
Never thought Dead Space has caught this much recognition than before, and I'm glad I lived to see its legacy transpire to the next gen level. I can safely say that this is EA's redemption arc.

back when i was around 14 and playing the original, i thought: "wow this game is so cool I can't wait to see what the future holds" but nobody told me that games wouldn't change and get any different, and moreover, that we would get the same game like 12 years later.

Tip: Only equip 1 or 2 weapons, a fully upgraded Plasma Cutter is money, as the ammo drops have a higher chance of being just those two. Also, use Stasis. It buys you time and is super cheap to purchase.
The scariest thing is the prices in the kiosk in the game, also the eldritch horrors, but damn is it expensive to shoot stuff

Just as you survive your ordeal on the hostile ocean planet, you escape in your rocket and contact the corporation that is also the government you work for and are informed that you owe MILLIONS if not BILLIONS of dollars for all the equipment you created and expended while on planet...all dat shit be patented...gotta pay the royalties...and in a universe where corporations are governments, I don't think they'll let you declare bankruptcy on that one...
Use the flamethrower and contact beam. Both are the most ammo efficient. Contact beam drops 5 and takes 2 to kill on hard
Isnt flamethrower the worst Gun in remake? I found secondary fire on contact Gun to be prety good.

I use the dead limbs to also Kell Necromorphs. Sometimes takes two or three hits depending on difficulty.

As The Callisto Protocol reportedly pales in comparison to this game, I wish I'd have played it first. Halfway through Dead Space 2023 now and while I'll definitely play TCP someday (on heavy discount), I feel having played this will only worsen the experience.

I loved this game when it came out. It genuinely creeped me out at moments and got my heart racing so many times. It was a game I had to take a break from at moments to lower the intensity, but always had to go back to. Can’t wait to play the remaster, I hope they remaster the second game too!

@@theyfearme1379 Oh yeah! The monsters get creepier in DS2. There is one part that I can’t compare to any other game just the sheer uncomfortableness but knowing that you have to step forward to engage…can’t wait to relive that in upgraded graphics

Never played the original, so I came into this whole thing completely blind as to what it's all about outside of being a horror game but the moment to moment gameplay is what is really fun about this game. Really enjoying playing it. Haven't beaten it yet
The only thing I would criticize about this awesome game, is that the Kinetic module is only useful against enemies when you use their own body parts against them, or those occasional exploding energy tanks. It's a bloody Force power that allows you to move around heavy shit. If you levitate a massive sized metal box, or a bloody furniture, and then throw it at these creatures at considerable speed, it should at least knock them down, if not outright crush them. It's physics dammit!
I was hesitant at first, but after playing it I have zero regrets paying full price for this game.
One of my favorite aspects is the peeling system they have for enemy bodies. Watching skin and meat tear off where you shot, revealing the bones underneath. And you can get the proto-type stasis which melts flesh off those it hits, turning necromorphs into these much scarier skeletal looking versions.

I loved the original dead space and when the remake was announced I immediately pre ordered it. 😂 I absolutely wasn't disappointed. It was fun trying to remember what was in the original and comparing it to the remake and seeing how much better the remake is (IMO). I hope more people play it and enjoy this game! Dead Space is a great series.
Excellent review AJ. REALLY looking forward to playing this game when I hopefully get my PS5 in a couple weeks. And no I haven't played a Dead Space game before either, so it will be a new experience for me. I just HOPE that EA don't pull an Activision and screw things up for this game post-launch, like what Activision did with Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled OR what they did with NFS Heat. Oh and by the way AJ, it's Dan Kim. Not Stan Kim (the Senior Designer that is)
Finally finished the game. Didn’t have the balls back then to finish the original game. Gotta say it’s fking amazing. The atmosphere, the background disturbing sound effects, the variety of monsters, and of course the gore, all these elements gave me goosebumps. 10/10 imo
I like how Joe said he's never played the og n talks about how the remake did things better when they're practically identical in terms of game play/story. The remake is a great game because the original IS already perfect. The studio had the formula for the game already spoon-fed to them. Sure, the new dialog is cool, but honestly, it doesn't add much. You meet a few extra people only to never see or hear them again. The exploration is nice at first, but you can see everything your first go, and it's not like they added more to explore. Game deserves its praise, n I'm not knocking the studio for what they did. I guess I just wanted MORE dead space, n I personally don't think they delivered or did enough to warrant such praise for a game that's been out for over 10 years.
