  • A quick video of the chain I use with my tractor jobs. I'm sure most of you know all the ins and outs of chains, but I thought I'd put this together for someone getting started. A 3/16" chain is a little lighter than the 1/4" shown here and would work as well in most cases. I lost my old 3/16" chain I used somewhere - I think it's at the bottom of one of my post holes - so this 1/4" is my new go to chain for most jobs. The key to a good chain is making sure you have the right hooks on the end!
I mostly use Grade 30 and Grade 43 chains (they are the most common), but I've also got 2 Grade 70 chains that I use mainly for tying down loads in my trailer. There are some DOT regulations about what type of chain to use on roads for loads. I've never seen (for sale) grade 80 or 100 chain at retail - I imagine its for heavy industry and quite expensive.
    Behind the Scenes:
    GoPro Hero5 Black 1080p 30fps Linear.
Audio to GoPro External Adapter and a stereo breakout cable.
On left channel is Rode VideoMicro and right channel is Rode SmarLav+ with 10' extension and clipped to t-shirt.
Each audio channel was split in Premier to create 2 mono channels so they can be adjusted separately.
First time color grading - changed tint to accurately portray skin tones. Not sure if I like it or not...will have to play around with this some more.
Edited in Adobe Premier Pro CC 2017.1.2
    Happy Father's Day!!!

Informative and to the point. I learned more in this 3:56 video (slip vs. grab hook and how to use both) than I've learned in videos 10x longer. Good to know that I've been using my grab hook incorrectly!

I'd accept that as a Fathers Day present.

Ya , we used the grade 30 chain , until we one time used it an saw the welds coming apart , after that we dished out the dough and bought 1/4 "grade 80 lifting chain , we have 2 lengths of 10ft , i recently bought 10 feet of 3/8" chain of grade 80 chain ( was on sale at our local TSC Store )with grade 80 locking grab hooks( from www.boltonhooks.com/index.html) , I am doing work with a 69 PTO hp tractor.

+45NUTS nice! With that much hp grade 80 is probably required! My little 1025r would have a hard time messing up a grade 30 chain! Good to know they have the 80 chain at tsc, though. Thanks for the comment!

Just a quick basic look at chains. What do you use with your tractor? My math on the cost of this chain is a little off - I think it's closer to $25 :)
