    Finally, this video is getting old and there are probably much newer and more cost effective models out there.

    Really helpful video, friend. Good work!
    I use the same LED strips on my motorcycle armor hooked up to a switch and a power bank to increase my visibility to other drivers at night.

    Great Video, I think it sums the subject up nicely. :)
    You can still have "white LEDs" on top, you can light the upper section with all on to get some white. You could even take it further and make status indicating colors for the LEDs, blue for ready, green for printing, red for error, etc...
    For an enclosure I personally use a combination of Lack table, and a few cabinet parts and a glass door. My printer fits rather well, the tools fit, 2 spools fit, and I have the space divided with ventilation for the electronics. I also have RGB LED strip lighting inside that does status colors, and turns white when I open the door or push a button on the outside.
    I regret it is so low, it is a pain to work in. I have thought about a bar height table instead, or maybe robotic arms I can remote control. ;)

    I have just acquired the same cabinet free from work, I do plan to insulate it with the silver loft insulation that is quite thin - add seals around the opening panels and light it with LED's. Great vid.

    hey ... its 2018-may 4th,( from U.S.A) and I just seen your video. It Saved me a lot of headache. I took your advice and I scored the same kind of deal you did. I had to drive just like you , but I would say it was well worth it. The 3d printer fits perfect!.. I love people like you !. Im so glad you took the time out to make this video. It inspired me enough to want to make a video to give people more ideas. Thanks a million bro!!!!

    Server cabinets are a decent idea. I ended up getting a 30x30 Coca-Cola retail refrigerator for 40 bucks. Very well insulated, large glass window, pulled all the refrigerator parts out. Next I'm installing fans.

    Im really late here but the cardboard one is ironically probably the best insulated one out of all the diy ones shown. A lot kf makers use cardboard to make the tride and true cardboard hotbox because it's cheap, easy to construct, and excellent insulating properties.

    The space i have is really limited so i'm trying to come up with solutions to print with ASA so i can test a prototype. I have Anet A6 which has served me well so far using PLA during the design phase . Any tips or suggestions for this model printer? Thanks from an ex pat in Canada.

    hai there, own a anet a8 to. I have the idea to to design my own case. Also i do want to use rgb led in my case but i will try to program them with the steps of the printer like: when its done it wil change green, when its printing it lights breed red and warming up another color. I do want to install a led led ring at the hot end to light up the print. maybe an idea for you? ( sorry for my bad english)

    A couple of more potential benefits of enclosures if they are built suitably. They can provide fire protection if lined with the right grade of drywall or are metal. Not a small benefit when you are leaving a robot with a couple of heating elements to run a muck overnight. Also you can vent the cabinet to remove abs or other fumes. These and the sound were the main reason I built one.

    Great video! Your 3D printer series has been great and it was your second video in the series which persuaded me to buy an Anet A8 for myself and I don't regret it in the slightest! I would love to put it in an enclosure but I don't think I'm able to due to space restrictions.
    I'm intrigued to know, has the noise of the machine reduced by much? Are you now able to sleep with it on, or is it still a bit too loud? Also does the towel underneath the printer pose a potential fire risk?

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks & that great news! My case is bigger than a washing machine and I wished I went for a smaller one at the time but since I have got hold of a CR-10 its definitely good to have the extra space.
      The towel does help but the heavy concrete slab under the towel makes the most difference. I should have said this in the video. Also a metal cabinet tends to resonate at certain print speeds so you will need to tweak your print speeds mid print to find out what works.
      The anet is a fire risk already. Loads of people on the discussion group have had melted connectors and wires. I have seen no signs of this occurring but I only print PLA and never run the heat bed hotter than 55 degrees. I would suggest looking for a an alternative to a highly flammable cotton towel. I think wool is fire resistant if it doesn't have any plastic in it. You could try that. I have put the anet to one side for now.
      whilst at uni I would sleep in the same room as the printer so I can confirm that the enclosure + foam seal + slab + towel made a big difference, collectively.
      Thanks for your comment!
      TL;DR Yes, Yes, Yes

      Thanks for your response and keep up the great quality content!

    A nice video, but a couple of points.
    1) An enclosure will reduce the effectiveness of the heatsink on the hotend.
    2) That's a comms/equipment cabinet, not a server cabinet, it's far too shallow, a server would stick out the back by about three feet on that (but things like patch panels and switched would be fine) :D

    How did you make the LED strip do that rainbow effect using that code?

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It should just be a case of connecting the +12V of the LED strip (VCC) to VIN on the arduino and the +12V of the anet's PSU. Connect the LED's GND, Arduino's GND and PSU GND together. Also, connect the led pixel strips data line to digital pin 6 on the Arduino and upload to code for your particular Arduino board. You will need to download the fastled library and install it if you haven't already.

    Actually printing at higher temperatures help with ABS warping, because internal stress of the material gets reduced if it stays at higher temperatures.

    While not every printer needs an enclosure, there is something in the name of your page that many printers lack: Solid Ground!
    Limit switches, thermitors and power transistors all 'talk' to the main board.
    Direct connections to the micro-controller, no isolation.
    A nice dry winters day killed my Kossel printer: I made the mistake of touching the hot-end without wearing a ground-strap, killed the thermistor analog input.
    Other times touching any part of the cabinet has ruined print-jobs by resetting the controller.
    DC ground and AC (safety) ground were not connected!
    A floating DC means that static spikes have to go through your electronics to find ground.
    Ground your DC power supply to actual ground, put snubbing caps on your limit switches, by-pass your thermistor channel to ground, ground your hot end!
    An un-grounded hot-end on a Kossel is a linear VanDeGraff generator!
    A cabinet would address all these issues, of course, but I believe in fixing root causes.

  • @glennedward2201
    @glennedward2201 ปีที่แล้ว

    Id rather have my enclosure over a tool cart for no bending or kneeling.
    The actual cabinet should have a pullout table so you could simply slide the printer out versus having to remove a panel. Might even use a cable chain with it.
    I have many ideas for cabinets including a filament drywr drawer that you can feed up to the printer, control, electronics, so the printer was separate not heating them up and a fww others.
    Theses would be the basic for me. Should have a luxury ease of use longevity feel. For the serious hacker anyway.

      Perhaps I am the odd one, I don't know..... But I just want to listen to the commentary. I can turn the volume up and hear most youtubers without a single issue, I really don't want to read text. I don't know where all the content creators got the idea that constant background music is desirable.
      I'm trying not to be a cranky old bastard but dangit all... I try to view videos like this to see what other people are doing and I just don't want the distractions of crap music that make it difficult for me to listen to what they have to say ...

    I would NOT advice using a wooden(or otherwise burnable) enclosure like the IKEA lack. They're cheap but its not a good idea.
    Printers often print overnight or when you're otherwise gone for long periods of time making it impossible to adequately respond to a fire. There's lots of moving and heating parts that require maintenance which many people overlook. It may take years, but these kind of printers WILL fail. Whether its by wires eventually shorting, a failing thermistor or mosfet on the mainboard. The chance of these occurring are small but difficult to ultimately prevent without diligent maintenance.
    Under a normal setup a printer fire wouldn't necessarily be as catastrophic and likely just leave a big black stain on your floor or table and likely extinguish by itself. However the damage will greatly increase when you add a burnable already warm enclosure whether its wood or acrylic panels. Also the pla you're storing right next to your printer inside the enclosure is gonna go up in flames as well adding fuel to the fire. Instead of a small printer fire you will have a whole freaking piece of furniture ablaze.
    If you get an enclosure make sure its from metal and transparent panels are either glass or polycarbonate. And do NOT store your filament right next to your printer. Leading your filament from a safe distance into the printer is not difficult, so do it. The best thing to do is always be present when the machine is operating but we all know that simply isn't going to happen. But a good enclosure will help prevent fire damage, a bad enclosure is gonna makes it much much worse to the point of potentially ruining your life.
    Completely preventing a printer fire may be difficult if not impossible, but please don't turn it into an absolute catastrophe when it does happen.
