Because the vast majority of people buying smartphones don't check performance tests, mosts don't even know (or care) what kind of processor their device uses. Approach ten random Samsung phone users in the street and ask them what a Snapdragon is, I bet eight will think it's some kind of small aggressive dog breed. Samsung sells worse phones at higher prices in the rest of the world compared to the US because *it can*. People still buy it. Companies really only change their behaviour if punished by customers with lower sales, leading to losses in profit. As long as they can slap their cheap in-house processor in a phone and it still sells like hot cakes, there is zero incentive for them to change.
This is what we expect from Tech TH-camrs. To conduct intensive, quantitative, objective and rigorous tests transparently and show us hard facts on which we can draw conclusions. Not endlessly hype and yap about products like fans and influencers. Which a lot of Tech YT'ers do today. Absolutely loved this video. Subbed. Keep up the good work!
This is the battery test video I've been looking for. Mega TH-camrs who only test the display battery in a Wi-Fi environment should reflect. Testing standby power in a 5g environment is a true battery test.
I had pre-ordered s24 series, but decided against getting it when I saw it came with exynos. And your videos played a major part in making that decision. Thank you for your work. This is so detailed. I'm using an S24 Exynos, and I'm pretty satisfied with it for my use. Would've definitely preferred the SD.
For the S24+ Exynos, I did a few tests to determine battery drain depending on the type of mobile network. Also checked the use of 1 or 2 sim. In all cases, the phone is connected to wifi and not in use. Got the following battery usage results: 1) 2 sim, network type one 3g, the other 4g - consumption 2.0% per hour 2) 2 sim, network type of both 4g - consumption 0.8% per hour 3) 2 sim, network type of both 3g - consumption 1.8% per hour 4) 1 sim, 3g network type - consumption 0.5% per hour As a result, we have obscenely high battery consumption with 3g network type when 2 sims are used.

Thank you for confirming the difference. There are so many media sources out there that seem biased towards Samsung (exynos) to continue to receive review samples etc. Thank you for your honesty.
The difference in daily life will be much less than what you claimed. And contrary to you Exynos 2400 does improve a lot since last year and is without a doubt one of the very best SoCs around. The only problem is, that Samsung is offering the same phone in 2 versions for the same price giving you no choice. If you dive this deep, then why not mentioning that core architecture of both is not the same this year. In theory Exynos 2400 should be ahead in low power tasks regarding battery. But competition is always good - imagine there would be only Qualcomm ...
Well, on the S24 and also on other Samsung phones, the last 10% (10 to 0) is usually equal to maybe 3-4% when the battery level is higher (50 to 47, for example). That being the case, maybe the difference isn't thaaat big. Maybe more like 10-15%. Anyway, great video again. I love how you worry about being as accurate and precise as possible :)
Stellar video. It would be great if such tests could also be done on last Gen's Snapdragon S23 in comparison to the Exynos S24, as I have a feeling that the previous year's will match this year's Exynos offering.
hi @@techmo2020! At 6:02 , although you toggled the option for 'limit apps and home screen', you didn't turn on the power saving mode at the very top of the screen back again. That's why it didn't show any meaningful difference in the charts with this very aggressive power saving feature toggled. In other words, you customized how the power saving mode works by toggling the apps and home screen limitation, but the power saving mode itself wasn't on for the tests in this video. Maybe you could do this part again on a whole new video, also exploring the additional limits when power saving is on.
@@alex-coelho hi, I actually went through my footage again now, and even though it is cut in this video, I made sure that the power saving mode was actually on. Since I was in the setting and my name was visible, I cut that part of the video. To be fair it showed 3% less battery consumption on power saving mode, but my tests were not targeting full CPU utilization and the use of 120fps screen, most of them were stationary which means the screen was already on a lower refresh rate, hence the difference was minimal.
@@techmo2020 Thanks for the clarification! I still find it weird that, on the video, the home screen didn't change to black with the fewer limited apps allowed to run (which would also impact the tests if the one used in the video wasn't set up to be among the eight-ish or so). At least on mine it does change to that after toggling apps and home screen and turning power saving mode on at the top of the screen
@@alex-coelho If you look closely at 06:09, the video is cut (the light on the scene changes slightly). There, I went to setting again, turned off the last option, then pulled the settings down and turned on the power saving mode from the top menu. Definitely a lousy editing on my part. But your feedback is definitely valid, I will do a small test later, but I should design it in a way that power saving mode actually makes up a difference.
What an amazingly detailed assessment! The last Samsung phone I bought was the S10 but the heat, throttling and battery drain with Exynos was so bad that I had to send it back. The Exynos's supposed counterpart, the SD 855, was a wholly different experience. It is in Samsung's best interests to quit this borderline scandalous practice with their flagship products as soon as possible.
Just found out that aside from the US and Canada, the Samsung S24 and S24+ sold in China have Snapdragon chipset and not Exynos. So I guess for those who are in countries near China (like those in East and Southeast Asia), the units released in China and are sold in their country may be a good option. (In my area, HongKong variants are sold.)
Software can't update hardware... Samsung might maybe(*) be able to slightly narrow the power draw difference under load by compromising in performance by limiting peak performance/max clocks in Exynos. But standby/network connectivity power draw simply can't be lowered without affecting also connection quality and risking signal drops. * If lower peak states result in CPU staying significantly longer in higher power states and unable to idle as often that can negate power saving.
They won't do anything like this based on historic facts. They have always neglected optimization for their subpar exynos chips. They just want to sell u the shiny new phone and that's it. Last galaxy i had - S6 was simply terrible in terms of battery life and performance just 1 year after launch. It got progressively worse with every update. I moved to Huawei Mate 20 and what a difference it was.. the best phone i've ever used to this day.
Thank you very much for this comparison. In the end, I switched from the S22 to the S23 with SD. On the S22 EX, the battery on 5G would disappear before I will blink my eyes, and the phone would heat up. I don't want a big phone and I don't play games on it. What interests me is precisely connectivity and battery life outside of Wi-Fi. I had the S24 on test, and it's the 5G that poses a big problem. Using wireless Android Auto with 5G data in the background could drain the battery in just a few moments.
At 6:35, did i just see the two samsung phones super impose the stars, just like they did with the "moon zoom"? Even though the cameras on both phones are facing the table?

Great to see a fellow Smartphone nerd from Austria. I think Samsung with their Android 14 Update might have figured something out with their Exynos Chips. I have been using a Galaxy S22 Ultra since its release and the Android 14 update really has smoothed things out. I don't get any frame skips in animations or inconsistent scrolling speed - which I was getting from time to time on Android 12 and 13. With that being said the battery consumption on this thing still is almost comically bad, especially standby times since I always try to maximize it by turning off wifi, 5G, bluetooth and GPS and manually AOT compile Apps with adb. I just in general think Samsung is using their Exynos chips wrong. They are not bad but they really should stay out of the Flagship Standard S Line of phones. If they would put these chips in the 500 - 700 Galaxy S FE Line they would wipe the floor with the other wannabe flagships using Mediatek 8000 and Snapdragon 7 Series SoCs in that price range. But to be honest Samsung never has been a company that gets you great specs for the price so I doubt they would ever consider it.
Exynos seems always hotter, even when doing mundane tasks. I don't think it's just the chip, the power management software wise seems bad too. Is there been any difference now 6 months later? Seriously considering ordering USA model instead of buying from EU, even if it costs me more. I really like s24+ model look.
2 min mark: Exynos has 1% battery off just seconds ago while SD had 2% off, even though SD run slightly cooler. Maybe Exynos processes the calculations faster or it takes slightly longer which causes more heat, but at same time there's some battery saved as well? But seems like generally there's very little difference.
Very good! Could you use your testing app to do a comparison between S23(one ui 6.0), S23 (one ui 6.1), S24 Exynos and S24 Snap? Of course, this when 6.1 will be available for the S23 Series
you got to the guts and proved what I was afraid to know. I read somewhere that the s24 plus with Exynos on Android Auto also drains the battery very fast, but it was one comment from a user with no video or further details provided. I still believe Samsung did a good job improving the Exynos processor and here in Brazil is what we have. Also, the pre-sales event brought amazing discounts that for sure can justify a lesser performance for the Exynos variant.
From a point of thermal throttling and weak performance, now exynos can atleast stand against snapdragon counterpart. For me ,i like competition among processors,so that for an end customer like me may have choices. I am also glad about mediatek, the same way i am happy for exynos too. Another reason is amd ,and their gpu capabilities. Samsung managed the thermal way better than previous gen exynos and i now have high expectations with the next exynos. I am also excited about snapdragon 's laptop cpu also 😅
I have the s24 exynos and I was very skeptical to get this version. But to be honest, the phone is awesome. The only thing I believe that could be better is the battery life.
Hola hermano. También tengo el s24+ con Exynos y la verdad es que va muy fluido para un usuario como yo (fotografía, redes sociales y multimedia). La verdad esperaba algo peor del procesador, pero hasta ahora el rendimiento ha sido bastante bueno
I was on the verge of buying a S24 (living in Europe) and now I'm really having second thoughts. It's probably still a good phone, but I don't find it fair that we have to pay the same price for a worse product.
I wonder, is the 4G connection more efficient if you do video calls? Looking at your data, the biggest issue of the Exynos version really seems to be the modem. As you said ... even Apple is buying Qualcomm modems ^^.
I have S22 Exynos. Battery is tiny but I can get used to it. I have no problems with it in winter, but in summer the phone can probably be used for ironing clothes. I am constantly reminded of living in the wrong country and getting the wrong processor.
Doesn't really work for cold either: In cold effective capacity of battery gets smaller/its ability to output current decreases. So in power hog phone battery voltage drops faster causing empty battery faster.
The thing about S22 lineup is that... Exynos 2200 chip was on a fresh node which was yet to be refined. I have S22+ and... I really need an upgrade lol. Performance is good, but efficiency and especially modem were awful... 5G/4G eats battery CHOMPS on battery, and performance quickly goes from "good" to "uhhghghh... phone too hot, time to throttle". Then they dropped S23 FE with the same chip, but on a refined node and boom- it performs well.
Thanks to being in europe I unknowingly ran the exynos variant the whole time in S5, S7 Edge, S9 and S21 FE and it cemented a thought in me that Samsung is laggy and with bad battery permanently. That whole experience led to me moving to iPhone and never looking back. Can't imagine how many more people moved to iPhone purely because of same situation like I was in, and now it resulted in Samsung permanently losing their customers. But at the end of the day it's Samsung's fault for not being clear about chipset and selling both variants at same price, and not even offering the snapdragon variant at all in Europe.
As long as it's cheaper it's not an issue. Like with the Pixel series, it comes with tensor which is much weaker than SD and even in thermals and efficiency.. if Samsung go down Exynos only path it'll give them a chance to optimize and make it better. Plus reduce the price
Perfect review it gives exact information about the 2 chipsets how it performs and SD is still king and exynos still behind. SW update didn't change performance of d exynos variant. Great work keep posting more such vdos.
Honestly, excellent work done by you. Being a tech savy I can clearly make out the efforts and hard work behind this video. Great Job done. Excellent and detailed level comparison. Superb...
So Samsung continues to offer subpar, half baked product under the same model name and for the same price? It’s time for the EU to deal with those misleading market practices.
In the end, Samsung offered the S24 200 € less, and I think It's a good offer considering that the exinos do is job onestly.I have an S24 and I'm absolutely happy whit the performance
Thanks for this video. Now I'm more confident to say that I bought the right phone for me. Back then, I was thinking of buying the S24 since many considered it the best smartphone right now. However, I'm not a fan of the S24 Ultra looks, which is why I want the S24 base model since I like small phones. I didn't buy the S24 since I saw that it was an Exynos variant, but after testing it in the malls, I could feel how smooth it is. The 120Hz feels the best in it, but since it's an Exynos, I didn't buy it due to its history of being bad compared to Snapdragon. That's why I bought the iPhone 15 Pro, since I can trust it more since the iPhone is known for its long-lasting, smooth experience. Many TH-camrs are claiming that the Exynos variant is as strong as the Snapdragon; they even made the S24 Ultra SD a bit weaker compared to other phones with SD 8 gen 3 just to make the Exynos look powerful. I thought that I was wrong and should have bought this one, but thanks to this, I am now satisfied to say that I picked the right one.
Also while doing multitasking( especially if we use camera for video recording) the phone heats up too much . Yesterday i was using 4-5 apps( with split screen & pop up) on my s24 ( including camera for video recording) which i also used to do on my s20fe5g & s23 and they both never ever crossed 46( s23 never crossed 44 ) ,but unfortunately this one reached a whooping 47.8 degrees yesterday . Samsung is learning and will get there if they get the funds it takes. Exynos are ok chips but competition is good and often times better or at least comparable. Got a 1380 in phone and am typing this on a SD695 tablet. Both are good yet not latest and greatest. MediaTek also makes very good chips. Don't argue but talk sense 😊

Not to ruin everyone's Snapdragon celebrations but for the daily user it's very meaningless. Exynos or Snapdragon, your phone will last the same. All of this concludes in charging your phone half an hour earlier in the worst case. Just being practical here...

No strange battery drain and no lags. Performance wise S24 exynos is good, battery management on mobile is totally offside. It's just my experience and no offense please.
A problem that has been faced and not expressed to the public because of course not many people will understand this. is from KERNEL, because AOSP kernel by default when development and testing using Snapdragon. Samsung of course also developed their own version of the kernel to be effective for Exynos. But this is also another problem, the developers of applications and games, develop and test them using the AOSP kernel. Well, that's why the Exynos is not optimal, when compared to the Snapdragon version, it's not too far apart but it really affects battery performance and efficiency. (?) So, can't the Exynos version be paired with a Snapdragon architecture kernel? Yes, but the results will be more inefficient, because Exynos and Snapdragon have different architectures, even though they are both made based on the same thing, namely ARM. The efficiency of Exynos can be realized if application developers develop it specifically for Exynos to make it more optimal. The problem is if there is no cooperation between application developers and Samsung, of course developers will not bother doing it.
TSMC has no part with anything in Exynos, which is all Samsung from design to production. That's one of the reasons why it has struggled to keep up with Snapdragon. And no amount of optimizing for CPU will fix issues of Exynos modem.

Imagine iPhone using third-party chip like snapdragon chip and only use their A17 on iPhone mini. Is it good for the company? Good for the long term depending on other company?

This is the battery test video I've been looking for. Mega TH-camrs who only test the display battery in a Wi-Fi environment should reflect.
Testing standby power in a 5g environment is a true battery test.
Is snapdragon battery better ? Worth importing
I had pre-ordered s24 series, but decided against getting it when I saw it came with exynos. And your videos played a major part in making that decision. Whenever someone asks me why didn't you get s24, it would say it runs 2°C hotter compared to Snapdragon based on all your videos. Got S23 instead for peace of mind 😊
you got s23 because you are poor, not because s24 run hotter.

A direct comparison between normal and light mode would be super interesting to see :)
In this test I could not spot any difference, light is setting CPU frequency max lower and throttle on lower temperature, I should do a test that really push the chipsets otherwise the difference is negligible.
Got the following battery usage results:
1) 2 sim, network type one 3g, the other 4g - consumption 2.0% per hour
2) 2 sim, network type of both 4g - consumption 0.8% per hour
3) 2 sim, network type of both 3g - consumption 1.8% per hour
4) 1 sim, 3g network type - consumption 0.5% per hour
As a result, we have obscenely high battery consumption with 3g network type when 2 sims are used.

Thanx for this, I really enjoyed it!
Congratulations for this video. I love how did you handle data. The message is very clear and talks facts.
The test was conducted in Austria, imagine it's in tropical Asia :(
Thank you so much for this test, I wonder why other TH-camrs are hesitating to conduct this test!
These tests are very valuable and i thank you for doing them hopefully Samsung can do something to improve exynos, especially when on 5G
True, that could be a thing. I ve noticed that on some of my Samsung Phones. It depends on how the % is measured. Because it is not really linear.
this is outrageous , you pay the same amount of money for a "worse" flagship. Great video.

hi @@techmo2020!
The graph at 4:00 - where can I find it for Standard performance too?

18% difference is crazy. And people have the gall to say Exynos is catching up. No, a 18% worse performance is two generations behind if not three.
Você é o melhor nesses testes ❤
De nada.
This is an honest review especially his last statements about Exynos chips...
I moved to Huawei Mate 20 and what a difference it was.. the best phone i've ever used to this day.
damn bro.. you are the best!!!

No it's not faking, it's showing the "possible" placement of the starts. The actual photo is just black.
The colors on the charts being the opposite of the brand colors is a little bit confusing 😅
That's such a good point, didn't cross my mind.
Snapdragon should be red and Exynos blue, even when Exynos is the hotter chip 😂

Very good!

you got to the guts and proved what I was afraid to know.

Absolutely, the only issue is battery otherwise a great phone. It's just a pity because it was so close to be greatest compact Phone ever made.

Love how you present the data like a statistician :)
Dude! awesome video!
I wonder, is the 4G connection more efficient if you do video calls? Looking at your data, the biggest issue of the Exynos version really seems to be the modem. As you said ... even Apple is buying Qualcomm modems ^^.
7:20 nobody seems to notice that Austria looks just like Down Under 😂
I have S22 Exynos. Battery is tiny but I can get used to it. I have no problems with it in winter, but in summer the phone can probably be used for ironing clothes. I am constantly reminded of living in the wrong country and getting the wrong processor.
Doesn't really work for cold either:
In cold effective capacity of battery gets smaller/its ability to output current decreases.
So in power hog phone battery voltage drops faster causing empty battery faster.
Samsung should just do Samsung S24 with Snapdragon across the board for everyone, and introduce Exynos when IT'S really ready.
Thank you for the video!
But at the end of the day it's Samsung's fault for not being clear about chipset and selling both variants at same price, and not even offering the snapdragon variant at all in Europe.
do latest Exynos vs latest tensor , i feel tensor is more optimised for pixels and Exynos still gotta do better
There are rumors that the S25 series will come with Exynos SOCs exclusively...
As long as it's cheaper it's not an issue. Like with the Pixel series, it comes with tensor which is much weaker than SD and even in thermals and efficiency.. if Samsung go down Exynos only path it'll give them a chance to optimize and make it better. Plus reduce the price
The map of Austria you used at 7:18 is a meme, right?

Where did you buy the North American version from?
In the original video, the one before the Samsung update, he mentioned that a contact in Canada bought and posted it to him.

Not to ruin everyone's Snapdragon celebrations but for the daily user it's very meaningless. Exynos or Snapdragon, your phone will last the same. All of this concludes in charging your phone half an hour earlier in the worst case.
