Really good stuff here! I just got my R5 today, after deciding that the R5 Mk II was overkill for someone like me, who only shoots stills. Very much looking forward to putting it through its paces.
I picked up an R5 this week. Yep, I finally made the jump and got it with a 24-105mm F4 lens. It's a pity that the weather has been so bad here in Tokyo that I couldn't test it outside. But I have photographed my dog and wife inside. My first pics blew me away. Why didn't I get this camera in 2020? Clearly, I didn't understand full frame's benefits. I used ISO 16000 for some photos and after processing in Lightroom ... I couldn't see any noise. Well, it was super minimal. There is no way I could get the same results with the Fujifilm X-T3. Anyway, the weather is looking good for tomorrow and I'm headed to the Iruma Air Base airshow with my new gear! Woohoo!
Thank you for the comment. Greetings from Toronto. I had the same experience when I shot my first photos with the R5. The quality of the images blew me away. In my opinion it's the best camera Canon ever made. Welcome to the channel. I have a bunch of tips and tricks videos on the R5 if you want to learn about menu settings. :)
You know exactly why other TH-camrs complain about the lens selection and some other minor things about these cameras are the same people getting paid or some sort of compensation by other companies. The narrative on TH-cam lately is to bring down Canon for whatever reason, all cameras are good and all have their quirks. It's up to the user to be happy with the camera they want or love to use, and there are always workarounds. I can watch your channel because you give it as it is. Others I've stopped watching because you can see the bias no matter how hard they try to hide it. Keep up the good work in the videos.
Thank you appreciate it. I’m all about trying to deliver honest thoughts good or bad. Even if a company pays me to review their product I’ll tell it like it is. Once you get the reputation of being a sellout it’s over. Thanks for being part of the channel.
This is the type of review I enjoy. It wasn't uploaded to TH-cam on the day the product was released to the public. I've shot Fujifilm for the last seven years and have been looking to jump ship. Recently I've been doing a lot of lowlight shooting and my X-T3 isn't great for that. So I'm going to get an R5 ... once my financial situation improves a little! Great video with many great reasons as to why this camera is still valid in 2024 (and beyond).
Love your content and your way of showing how you use this camera. I would love to see some of your work. It’s a fantastic camera and for me it’s important how it works with my flashes and C1, the whole workflow. For video I wish for more DR but it’s good! A great camera I feel I can live with for a long time.
Thanks for the comment. The R5 is amazing. You can check out my work on my webpage. www.vaskoobscura.com Welcome to the channel if it’s your first time here.
hi thanks so much for this video very much appreciated. I am based in the UK and I am thinking of buyig the R5 mark 11 but wantd to know your equipment set up for long recoding with the atmos nuja? and what cage/rig you use etc and bag etc....i need to purchase my things asap so would really appreciate your advice very much and once again thank you for this video !!
Love this camera, even more than my C70. I also have it since release date. It’s an amazing camera and I will not upgrade it to R52. It’s more than enough.
@@martinekwall4671 the c70 it’s an amazing cinema camera with amazing image quality but is not that good for run and gun situations, like I do usually. Like weddings or baptism for example. R5 is far superior in low light, have in body image stabilization, it does both photo and video in very high quality, it’s sharper than c70. But if you are very serious about only filmmaking, then C70 it’s a beast of a camera with greater colors, superior dynamic range (but not that much compared with clog 3 from R5 how many talk) and have a nice filmic look, perfect for films, documentary, corporate etc. I said I love more r5 because it’s what I use more, it’s a very fast camera to use in everything.
I think like you. I have an R5 for years. Very happy. Don't feel need for an upgrade. Might wait for R5 MkIII. Maybe pick up a good used R5 when the prices drop.
I've done video shot clog 3 from r7, and r5 but I haven't noticed a difference in the colors yet.. Will need to test that. But if the r5ii comes out at 4k. And the r5 stays at 3... I'm forsure grabbing the 2. Appreciate the video. I subbed.
Thanks for the video. I've been wanting to try the RF lens ecosystem and with the current price of the R5 it's hard to beat. I've been a Sony shooter for years but prior to that I was always Canon. I miss the Canon form factor. Sometimes it's more about the experience than the spec sheet and this is one of those times...pair it up with the RF 100-500 and have at it.
I know exactly where you're coming from. I bought a Sony A7III when it first came out and was setting up to move to Sony. I missed the Canon experience and sold the A7III for the EOS R. For me, like you said, it was about the experience of using the gear. I just had more fun with Canon but Sony do make some exciting cameras for sure.
Thanks really appreciate it glad you enjoyed the video and welcome to the channel. The R5 Mark II is about to come out so if you're thinking of an R5 wait a few more months and the price will really drop. :)
Great video! have the 5DMKIII 12 years..now I think I need an upgrade and thinking about the R5 or maybe R6II or waiting for the R5II. R3 looks also nice :D I usually shoot photos, doing portraits and sport like outdoorthinks/mtb shootings and lifestyle, but would like to try more video stuff. what do you recommend? thanks!
If you shoot sports the R5II will have a stacked sensor with a really fast readout speed that would probably something you could take advantage of. But then again if you're upgrading from a 5DmkIII, which is a camera I used for a long time, then even the EOS R is a big upgrade. Honestly it comes down to your budget. If you want to spend money the R5II will be a fantastic camera. If you want to save a little money and get a great camera at a good price wait a few months and the R5 will drop in price. You'll get great value for your money. Hope that helps.
Best review. R5ii a trivial upgrade, so I’m now sticking with my R5 and ignoring all reviews and speculations of the R5ii It’s not going to make a blind bit of difference to me except being left behind but I’ll wait for the iii or go for a R3/1 eventually.
Even though the R5 has the 30-minute record limit, Doesn't it automatically keep recording but splits the video into its own new clip? Example - 45 minutes of video recorded as two files?
These cards are great. In retrospect I should have picked up the 1tb. I’ve filled this one up on set a few times. But they offload fast too with a good card reader.
Thank you for posting this excellent video! Very informative! I do have a question about the Canon RF24-105mm lens. I shoot 2D artwork (typically 36"x36" oil paintings). Would the RF24-105mm be good for this purpose or should I buy an 85mm prime like the sigma 85mm f1.4 art? Thank you in advance!
Hi thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel if it's your first time here. I assume you're shooting with lights and tripod as well. I used to shoot a lot of paintings myself. Used to work in an art gallery. The 24-105 L is a great choice for art reproduction because it doesn't have a lot of distortion and you get the versatility of that zoom range. But in the end primes are the best way to go for image quality and no distortion. Those sigma art lenses are fantastic from what I hear. If art reproduction is a big part of your business I'll point you in the direction of a used Fujifilm GFX medium format camera. They come in 50 and 100mp sensor sizes and the detail they can pick up is unbelievable. You'll be able to see a brush hair if it came off in a brush stroke. In medium format 100mm is equivalent to 85mm on full frame.
Agree with you. Technology grows very slow nowadays and my 9 years old Sony (talking about $10 grands cameras) produces images comparable to the same price one years old Canon. Maybe a little more digital noise comes from old cameras, but it can be quired by the modern software.
100% agree. Older cameras are still very usable today for photography. Even my EOS R produces images that are on par with the R5 and R5 Mark II. It's really hard to spot the difference.
There will always be a new camera coming out, with the marketing campaigns and hype that go with it. But frankly, I think very good cameras like the r5 will remain interesting choices for many years to come. What more could you ask for?
Exactly good point. I mean even the EOS R still holds it's own today as a great photo camera. The R5 will certainly still be fantastic in 2028 when the Mark III hits the market. Camera companies are in a real pickle. They need to innovate otherwise there really isn't a need to upgrade.
Because big companies like B&H and Amazon get thousands of units. Supply usually lasts well past the date the camera company stops manufacturing the product. Traditionally retailers use Black Friday to get rid of old inventory. But you never know recent supply chain issues could mean inventories are low.

I don't think the r5ii is gonna drop the price of the r5 anymore than it's already at. The 5dmark4 is still 2300 after all this time. 3k is a great price for the r5.
@weaverrealestatephotograph7716 I personally think it sucks.... now anyway. For my usage. It works great for product photography in studio. And yes it can shoot more obviously. But video... trash. Compared to r7 or r5. R6 I'm sure included. It's outdated. I've gone to shoot real estate on it, and used my r7 instead. Just wasn't for me. I have 2 5d4 in my studio. I've brought them to a wedding, ran them for the ceremony... after watching back the footage at 1080, vs my r7 and r5... I chose not to include that footage. You call it an animal... I call it hmm... " should be lower priced " lol And before you ask my credibility, I am a full time photographer/ videographer as well.
The flagship? The R3 blows the R5 our of the water. The stacked sensor is not only great for useable silent shutter but I hardly have to touch my R3 files, the R5 I have to underexpose 1/3 a stop and still bring down the highlights and it never looks as good, even in the same light. I normally shoot with two bodies, but my R3 is my daily driver for stills and video. And yes I shoot over 30 mins all the time,, and I don't have to rig it out. I can even go handheld for b-roll because the body is so nice to hold. Oh, and the battery lasts so much longer.
All good points for sure. We can debate back and forth but all out points will be moot when the R1 finalyyyyyyy comes out. Canon has been dragging their feet on that project. They're the only big brand out there without a true flagship camera. Thanks for the comment by the way. Welcome to the channel if it is your first time here.
@@vaskoobscura_ Canon dragging their feet is frustrating. Imagine if they released the R5 a few more years earlier. They would not have lost so much market share to Sony. I'm not sure the Apple way of thinking, do it better, not first will work against a company like Sony that's about to buy Paramount.
Thanks for the comment. The video frame rate is 24 frames per second just as it is in all my videos. If the frame rate looks off it's probably on your end or slow internet connection. Everything looks fine on my end.
