I have used a Canon 1Dx Mark II since 2016 for all photos/videos of my Macaw family. But after watching numerous YT videos from bird photographers using the Canon R3 I decided to rent one. The eye tracking autofocus and 4K video quality is so amazing bought one. The R3 uses the same batteries as the 1Dx and the EF lenses work perfectly with an adapter. I also love the size and feel of the R3. My only complaint is that the R3 does not use dual CFExpress cards like the new R1. Since I do not require the speed of the R1, I am very happy with the R3. Great video, thank you for sharing your experience!
he may use a teleprompter or a script but who cares. The videos where people go out in the field for an hour long youtube video and babble endlessly are tedious to watch.
Simply put: one of the best, if not the best review of the specs for the R5m2 available on TH-cam, and partially for the R1. The tone is very balanced and fair for each product and brand. Well done!
Finally! A review of the R5 MKII for stills photographers, all to date have concentrated on video. For my photography I don’t think it is worth upgrading from the R5, unless of course I get into wildlife photography. The one feature that may have pushed me over the line would have been realtime exposure zebras for stills and this is the first review to even mention them, so it’s disappointing that they are not there, perhaps a firmware update may bring them in.
A local camera shop had an event with reps from Canon, Nikon, and Sony so I was able to pick their brain on some of the features of the R5ii. I was impressed enough to get one on pre-order! It was a no-brainier upgrade for my trusty R6. Unfortunately It won't be here in time for my next trip, but that's the way of things. I asked the Canon rep about the batteries and he said no still-shooting features will be sacrificed by using the LP-E6NH batteries of the current R5/R6/R6ii, however in video mode there will be some limitations. If that's true or not only time will tell, but I understand it to mean that we should have all the FPS, Autofocus, and pre-capture features while using the older batteries, albeit likely with poorer battery life. So they still hold some use. Great video as always, Duade!
I'm tempted to make the same upgrade, but I'm mainly covering music events in low light (occasionally football but for a hobby vs work) makes me unsure as the MP boost might be detrimental for me 😅 Hoping someone finds out how the low light compares to the R6 🤞
Thanks for sharing mate, seems to be some confusion over the battery and what we can and can't do with old batteries so I may hold off ordering 3 of them. You will notice a huge improvement over the R6, very exciting for you indeed. Cheers, Duade
@@Duade I posted a reply with a link a couple days ago but TH-cam apparently deletes comments with links so here's Take 2. I did research on the battery information after seeing your reply and found Canon's published User Guide online which has a chart for what functions are limited when using LP-E6N/LP-E6NH batteries directly in the camera (not in a battery grip). It states the following: Network connectivity (Wi-Fi/wired LAN) is not available. Reduces continuous shooting speed and prevents selection of 8K DCI/8K UHD/RAW/SRAW movie recording size, Fine image quality, and 239.76/200.00/119.88/100.00/59.94/50.00 fps frame rates.HDMI RAW output, still photo shooting during movie recording, High Frame Rate movies, and pre-continuous shooting are not available. So it appears I was misinformed by the Canon rep at the event I attended, and I want to apologize if I further misled anyone with my initial comment citing what the rep had told me. It seems like functionality will be lost in stills while using the older batteries. The User Guide's chart also states that LP-E6 batteries "Cannot be used as a power source". Hope this clears things up a bit.
@@VibrantJackal92i’ve shot a crazy amount of low light events in my career and the noise between r5 and r6 (I use r6) isn’t noticeable, it’s only when you crop in to the r5 that you notice. I’m very confident the R5ii will have better noise reduction than either the R5 or R6ii, so that shouldn’t be a problem
Thank you Duade for your interesting video. As a Nikon Z9 shooter my wishes for a nearly perfect wildlife setup was a camera with 45-50 MB, all specs of a Sony A9III, the body of a Canon R3 and all Nikon lenses. Stay healthy and good luck Roland
So I purchased a Canon R6 Mark II to replace my R7. It is hands down my favorite camera I have ever used for shooting wildlife. Flexibility of autofocus system and how well it tracks and nails focus is nothing short of amazing. This new R5 II is basically a R6 II with electronic mode dial, screen on top and 45 BSI sensor with more than twice as fast read out speed as R6II or R5. Then add one of the most sophisticated autofocus systems available with 30 fps Raw. So what is not to love on this camera? Finally pre-burst implemented properly, thank you Canon. That new action sport mode is very interesting, why couldn't you add birds and wildlife also? Load images just like you can people if you want to target certain species. 14 bit Raw on all photo's is also very welcome. Bigger brighter EVF, improved in-body IS and also some pretty great Video specs as well. My dream camera so I pre ordered mine about one minute after it was available for purchase.
But the R7 and R6 are totally different? One is a crop camera, and one is FF. Not really a replacement....I actually quite prefer the R7 over the FF for wildlife.
Excellent pre-emptive video having also watched your early use of the R5II and clearly your assumptions are being found to be correct. I had not watched your channel before yesterday, but had completely agreed with you on the choice of the R5ii over the R1. Mine is coming Wednesday. As a 1DX Mk3 and 90D shooter and having been Canon Digital back to 5D and 1DMk IV, I had resisted the R3 and a gradual transition to mirrorless due to R3 primarily not giving me a worthwhile higher resolution over the 1DX3 and a couple of the same R5 issues you mentioned when noting the improvements on the R5II making me hold back to DSLR. I was probably not expecting the R1 to go to 45mp as I'd had the same 'disappointment' with 1DX and 1DX Mk2, eventually going for the Mk3 because of autofocus, etc., Like you I am hoping they will produce an R3 Mk2 with at lease a 35mp sensor and incorporate perhaps some Cross type autofocus points in the manner that some of the 5 series and 1 Series had similar focus advantages over 50D's etc., Thank you also for your comparative reviews on RF100-500 and the 200-800mm. I am getting the former initially as first use will be on holiday but then I will almost certainly get the 200-800 for a photo Safari next year although my alternative might be to get a R7Mk2 and swap bodies instead of using tele-converters in order to get the 160mm to 800mm equivalent on the RF100-600 with hopefully 'sorted' autofocus on the R7. Great Channel as is that of your friend Jan Wegener.
Again thanks for another great honest video Duade. I have the R5 and will be using it for a while, but the specs and information on the R5II is great to hear.
I know that you’re mostly a Canon shooter. I shoot R5 with the RF 100-500. I love this lens for its flexibility and weight. . I’ve been reluctant to buy more Canon lenses so that I’m not in too deep. What I’d like to see is the R5 ii comparison 100-500 kit to the Z8 100-600. I’m basically trying to figure out where to spend my money. Stay Canon or go Nikon! I’m frustrated by Canons lens selection for wildlife. Finances are limited, so I’m waiting on upgrading. I either stay with Canon R5, go to R5 ii, or jump ship to Nikon. I know many are focused on just the R5ii right now, but that means there will be a lot of R5’s for sale too. Maybe a good time to compare the 3 kits mentioned for those of us thinking stay Canon or go Nikon?
I know how you feel. I waited and finally bought the 200-800 lens. The weight is an issue. I have preordered the R5ii. ONe can be set with the 100-500 and the other with the 200-800. Why did I buy it given my concern with the weight. In open country I want to 200-800 for reach plus the TCs for it. THe 100-500 is my favorite lense but with either TC my cant focus up close. Location will determine which I use. The 200-800 is awfully nice when you want a little extra reach and still have focusing flexibility.
I’m in a similar position . I can’t decide between the Canon 5D Mk II and the Nikon Z8 at the moment. My collection of Canon EF lenses can be used on either via an adapter so that’s not an issue. I’m favouring the Nikon Z8 at the moment as it’s cheaper and actually available without having to pre-order. I also like the look/performance of the Nikon 180-600.
Have to agree with so many other comments. Duade, your reviews of cameras and lenses are the most practical, useful, and understandable for real world use. Hope you are feeling well. Looking forward to your experience and the images from your new kit. Cheers from Nova Scotia, Canada 🇨🇦 🙌
Fantastic content - I look forward to very new video. Keep up the great work! I have a quick question about the implementation of pre-capture. How does back button focus work with pre-capture ... since the half press of the shutter button is not used to start the focus. I'm sure it is usable with back button focus but wanted to ask about your experience with this in the filed with other brands.
Love your hands-on and practical videos. I hope you had your R5 II. Love mine, wish we had variable pre-capture shots, and able to assign it to a button for on/off.
Love the editing on the photo at 19:20. Wow!!! Love my R5 but think i'll be upgrading as well. Wish they'd changed the SD card out. It literally serves no benefit keeping it instead of having two CFE cards.
Hi Duade, love your videos! Can you go into more detail on what exactly a stacked sensor is and how it helps with the rolling shutter? I'd love for you to do a video on this, you have great visuals of the internal components. Thanks for what you do!
You can still use the old batteries. :) Maybe not as many features, but a good backup if you need them while your main charges. You're right. Canon exploits those battery costs. They are probably profiting more than half the cost price.
Lots to love about this release, and def some odd omissions at the same time. It’s certainly interesting Canon left out some headline features like crazy fast fps or 4k 240. Even with stipulations, it’s these features that garner attention and subsequently sell cameras. I don’t actually mind Canon pumping the brakes on excessive features, but just hoping everything these new bodies are equipped with, that they absolutely perform flawlessly (and hopefully avoid the drama we saw with R5 roll-out several years ago!) Thanks again for the direct and tact vids here sir, not a lot of people deliver in this fashion and you’re a true resource to the community 👌👌
As always very informative and comprehensive. Thank you, Duade. I would like to add a few comments, though: It's evident that Canon primarily focuses on sports shooters and journalists with the new releases. So I agree, that the R1 is not aimed at nature photographers at all and the 24 MP are a big disappointment for me, too. That said, they have also added special Ai- supported AF-tracking modes to the R5 II, exclusively tailored for sports, e.g for basketball, football and volleyball - inherited from the R1. From the specs, I haven't seen anything comparable for wildlife or bird shooters or any other statements of AF-upgrades for nature photographers, though. So it really remains to be seen if the claimed AF improvements for team sports in fact translate in a progress for nature photogs , too, making the R5II's AF significantly superior over the R 5 for wildlife and bird shooters in practice. Until that is confirmed in unbiased tests, I personally would be reserved with a general statement of a much better AF over the R5 for those tasks, at least. 3 and a half years ago, I had bought the R5 + Bg-10 grip plus an additional battery for 4300 €. That price included a small discount from my dealer, though. The naked R5 II body is 4800 € here in Germany. If you add a grip and a second battery, you pay 5500 €, at least. That's 1200 € more compared to the original R5 set. Of course, I know about the inflation in the past 3 to 4 years (btw, salaries have nearly stagnated in most Europan countries, though). Nevertheless, that increase of 1200 € isn't just play money for many. Additonally, the used market for photo equipment has become ridiculous. The R5 has been a high end tool for many users, but is obviously almost worthless and a bargain overnight in people's eyes. They dump the R5+ Bg-10 for around 2000 € here. Consequently, if I sell the R5 for that price and upgrade to the R5 II + grip, the difference is 3500 € . 😞😵 Of course, raw- precapture, reduced rolling shutter and flexible frame rates definetely are improvements over the R5. I never had issues with rolling shutter with my R5, though, but admittedly I have been using mechanical first curtain most of the time - for critical motifs, at least. I'm shooting 80-90% stills So the R5II's additional video modes aren't that important to me at the moment - given what's already available in the R5. Maybe the Eye-focus proves to be a step up, too. I don't use that in my R3, though. To sum things up, the R5 II certainly is improved over the R5. But for my style and photographic tasks most of the changes are incremental. At the very least, they're definitely not worth a €3200 premium upgrade from the R5 as pointed out above.YMMV. Threfore, I will keep that "old-fashioned" R5 that has served me extremely well in the past 3,5 years. Maybe I will consider an upgrade later if the price of the R5II comes down considerably. Cheers Wolfgang
My understanding is the R5ii has passive cooling via vents which don’t compromise moisture intrusion, not a fan. But one or more battery grip options you can purchase provide active cooling via a fan.
Hi Duade ! Thanks for this enthusiastic outlook to the R5 👍 you make all very relevant points ! And as everyone else, we are strongly looking forward to reviews from you and Jan ! I have the feeling the pre-capture time is now fixed to have a stable version to start with (and avoiding backlash like 4 years ago about overheating). pretty sure a later update will allow more flexibility, and hopefully a less hard buffer. Although I'm now so experienced in feathering my R5 shutter button that I never hit the buffer. The old batteries do not allow new features like precapture .. but it is still better to have an old one as spare in case the new ones are empty. Because of rolling shutter I'm recently more shooting in EFCS, which yields me only about 30% of the amount of shots as I get from one battery in ES. With much less rolling shutter, I'd use more ES and eat less battery. Regarding quickly switching to video, I'd assume when hitting the red record button in stills mode, you'd still film in C3 mode. The switch on the left side is indeed slower, then just provides the alternative to the last used video mode io C3m. I've also been rooting the R5ii would get dual CFxB cards. In comments on a video from our Ordinary friend Simon, someone explained that dual CFxB requires an integrated grip body for coping with the heat produced by the CFxB .. which prompted me to suggest a battery grip version which includes a secondary CFxB. Sadly it turned out Canon had already planned 3 other grips ;-) A crazy thing I'd like you try out on the R5ii is trying out for birds what was intended as wedding priority mode, where you can upload images of 10 persons in order to give these persons AF priority according to some ranking: Bride, groom, .. etc. It would be amazing when we could 'abuse' that for birding in order to snap some rare birds inside a flock of common birds, or to give prio to the sometimes more shy female plumage, or juveniles .. The latest CR rumors expect rather soon an R6iii and R7ii, but they said the R6iii would not get the Digic Accelerator .. when this AI chip only helps with in-camera post processing, ball sports etc it may not be a huge miss, but when that chip would help pick out specific bird species it would be a different story. If within a year an R7ii would be released with a stacked sensor, CFxB and the same AF as the R5ii, I might be better off adding that to my R5 instead attempting to sell the R5 in order fund the R5ii. When the D Accelerator is relevant for birding as well, then there's no alternative to the R5ii ;-)
Thanks for the really informative video Duade, really helpful. yes R52 over R1 for me as well - same reasons as well. I'm pretty sure I will order the R52 fairly soon but for sure not until I've seen your review once you've received your own production level camera and had a chance to give it a good try out in the field - no pressure then🙂 . All the best John
Fabulous explanation touching on all the issues I had questions about. Like many other enthusiast Canon wildlife shooters, my decision is whether to get the R5II or stick with the R5 for now. You absolutely nailed the main questions and clearly compared the known specs. Now the questions are, is the new autofocus system significantly better in the field, how well does the precapture system work in the field, does the buffering continue to be a problem or is it improved, and is there a noticeable improvement in auto ISO and auto white balance performance? Interested in hearing your take on these issues after working with the R5II for a while.
Strongly agreed about the pre-capture. It was your video on the OM-1 that led me to get into M43 and the OM-1 has become my primary body now for wildilfe. The two precapture modes on the OM-1 are so dang good, that it makes me look at Canon's version, both old and new, and go "Y'all can do better for sure."
I just upgraded to the R5 from 5D IV and I got the R5 at at campaign price for 4155 AUD here in Norway (Europe). You can by the R5 II here in Norway for 8175 AUD so nearly DOUBLE the price! Since this is not how I earn my living, and I don't shoot that much, I can't justify going for the R5 II, even though I've taken my time to jump to mirrorless. So far the R5 is great!
Hey Duade! Great video as usual. Thumbs up. Something else; I’d love to see in what shutter mode you where in the left hand corner when showcasing your photos in a video. (Mechanical/Elect 1st/ Elec). Cheers!
Great review! I believe the R5m2 only has passive cooling unless you attach the battery grip with fan, but even then it seems to only help around 5% with run-time in video, so not much benefit 🤷♂️ The R1 is cheaper because it’s really just an R3 mark 2. Canon needs a 45mp R1 for it to be a real flagship camera
Thanks, I will get the R5II on release and will do a first impression video and will do a full review once I have really used the camera in the field. Cheers, Duade
@@gregoryspring1303 Bingo! I have not seen one review to compare this. We know that the R3's normal color profile without log 4K 60 fps is beautiful and superior and sharper to that of the R5. Now what about the R5ii compared to $2000+ R1? That's the question
The BIIIIIIIIGEST mistake they made was not putting the optic joystick on this from the R3/R1. That thing is a game changer and I would have pre-ordered 2!
Duade, I think you are spot on evaluating the mkii. I have pre-ordered it here in the U.S. I'm looking forward to your setup videos. According to the manual the mkii allows flash with focus stacking. That is big for macro shooters.
Great review Duade... I have the R5 and primarily landscapes, secondarily wildlife. That precapture is pretty awesome, but I just can no longer justify the expense. I will be left behind by technology I realize. But the gains, going forward, of the next "version" are so much more minimal. Just hard to improve. No game changing technology. Enjoyed your video !! Thank you.
Duade, the one feature that would have moved me to immediately purchase the new R5ii would have been an internal GPS module like the R3. When I travel, I don't want to be concerned with documenting where images are captured if I'm shooting in multiple places. Two solutions are the GP-E2 module of which I have two, or connecting it to my phone. Neither options are perfect, but its all we have available. I love my R5 and was hoping that the new Mark 2 would resolve that issue. For now I will work with what I have and see how the new camera performs. Maybe in the next year I might invest in the Mark 2 if some hit the used market. You look like you are recovering well from your recent procedure. I'm sure you are itching to get out in the field. I look forward to your opinions on the camera when you get it. Have a great week.
Great video Duade. I agree with you that the R5II will certainly be a great camera for our needs and it could even have been perfect. But it shows up again, that Canon people don't listen to their clients. They cook in their own juices and think that everything they put in front of us will be taken with a kiss. Things like the (again) failed precapture implementation, photo/video switch on the wrong side, etc... Regarding the R1, it's certainly a great camera but should better not be labeled as a flagship. Not sure to whom these specs are perfect for. A limited group of press and sports photographers, who are miserably paid these days and hardly afford this camera? If they can fix the R5II's software based bugs soon and the price drops, it will be my next camera. Until then, my R5 will continue to do a very good job for me.
I just received my RF 200-800 after 7 months (ordered 12/23) so who know when I'll get an R5ii. So I'll get to know the lens while I'm waiting. The R1 is a disappointment for the reasons you gave. Great review of the R5ii. I agree with you 100% about some things they could easily have improved. Maybe we'll get updates. Thanks. G'day
Very good Video Duade I really love the look of the Canon R1 but the specs don't seem flagship compared to the R5MK2 I understand the R1 is still amazing with 24mp and the autofocus and the lowlight is amazing but yes I agree the Canon R1 is like the Sony a9III but with less FPS but the Canon r1 is more like the r3 mark II with the specs and I think canon should then make the R1 like the z8 or the a1 with a bigish body 45+mp and more fps like 40+ but they do seem amazing cannot wait to see a video about the R5MK2, Im looking into soon getting an R7 cannot wait. Love the content pal. 🐦
Hi Duade, great vid, you have just given me some info I didn't know about the R5 ii,, i am little disappointed about the non vari angle screen, new batteries hasn't made me smile, and there are a few other factors as well, however for me it should be a huge step up in technology and probably at my age the last camera I buy, so I pre ordered one instantly after the announcement, I have bought a 1TB cf express card , which I hope will be big enough, i do agree though why a sd card on this camera (crazy). I will have a huge amount of questions for you when I get mine, I hope you wont me asking you but mate I certainly will.
Morning Duada from lovely England great video as a R5 user we all had issues with the auto focus on the R5 not locking on your subject 45 pixels is great I feel like yourselves I used to be happy with 20 pixels on the 1 DX Bodys and we all got stunning captures I have pre ordered the R1 cross type auto focus is a game changer for me its all about the quality of the 24 pixels technology has come a long way hopefully you can do a field test on both cameras in time I will still keep my R5 take care Gavin
Thank you for your excellent explanation about the R5ll. You provided a thorough analysis of its pros and cons, and highlighted the missing features. I look forward to seeing the final product in your hands soon. As always, keep up the great work!
Great insights. I have mine on order so hoping the R5ii and the 100-500 L lens combo along with my R6ii and 24-70f2.8 for the wider shots will be ok for my trip down the Chobe in a months time. Was really worried the R5ii would arrive too late in NZ. Can't wait
Hi Duade. Thanks for all of your very helpful videos. Good to see you looking well. One thing that I'm interested to find out is if the screen goes blank when you plug in an external monitor. I have the R6mk 2 and have preordered the 5 Mk2. It's annoying to not have the full capabilities of the camera when in monitor mode. Cheers from a fellow Kiwi in Qld.
Always love your videos even though have never shot Canon and probably never will now. Had Nikon as first DSLR then moved to Sony A9 for silent shooting, happy now with my Sony A7R5 and SonyA93. And as I get older weigh becomes more important M4/3 likely to be the next move!
As always details explained in full. Thank you. I use the M-Fn button to switch between stills and video, and I prefer it that way. I am now wondering if this option is still available with the addition of the video on/off switch.
I appreciate your reasons why you're going to get the R5 mark ii and learned a lot about buffering. However, there's a few things I'd like to point out. 1. Pre-capture going to memory card: I saw CVP's video and it says pre-capture goes to the built-in cache, so it doesn't hurt the memory card as much as it was constantly eriting to it. 2. Built-in fan: It's just vents, no built-in fan. You need to buy the grip specifically with the fan + ethernet ports. 3. Unable to use the previous LP batteries: You can still use the old ones, but there will be limitations on the video end (no 8k60. [if I remember correctly]) and other stuff. I dont remember all the reviews I've watched that it sacrificed any of the stills features. I could be wrong on all of this. I looked at canon europe and usa website, but there's a lot of fluff to go through and maybe missed the info I needed. Im looking forward to getting this camera as well. Thanks Duane for your insights as a pro wildlife photographer. Truly appreciated.
Always great hearing your thoughts Duade! 😁👍 There appears to be a discrepancy about the R5 II weight, the Canon UK site states that the weight with card and battery is 746g, 656g without card and battery (just a few grams more than R5). Other sources saying weight with battery and card is 670g… odd! Also, you said price in Aus was cheaper, annoyingly in the UK, the R5 ii is expensive! £4500 vs $4300 USD makes no sense, 1 pound is worth more than 1 USD 🙈
Hi Duade, very good and informative Video. The R5 Mark II is my favorit for wildlife photography. I'm used to the 45 MP from my two R5s and it has often helped me with small animals. If for some reason I didn't get closer to the Motoiv. That's why I would like to continue to be able to use this option. I'm also glad the R5 Mark II doesn't have more than 45MP. In my opinion that is completely sufficient. Also with regard to the size of the files. For sure the 45 MP are not the only reason why I prefere the R5 Mark II. Also the improvements for videography etc. I don't want to list what you and others have already pointed out. I pre-orderd a R5 Mark II with the battery grip Cooling Fan CF-R20EP. Also 3 of the new Batteries LP-E6P. I find myself recording videos more and more often. Is the R5 Mark II perfect? Certainly not, but close to it for me. Otherwise there would be no R5 Mark III 😉 I personally see the EOS R1 more in sports photography for professional sports reporters. Looking at the technical data. There will also be firmware updates for the R5 Mark II and you may get additional options. What has been tested so far have been pre-production models and I could imagine that there will be one or two changes to the firmware before the market launch. The only thing that worries me is that there will probably be a lot of used R5s on the market and the price for the used ones is going down. Because I wanted to sell one of my two. Let's see how it develops. Uwe Greetings from Germany
The R5mkii really should have had anti-theft technology. Otherwise, the upgrades are surprisingly good, could have used more on the photo side such as more pre-shooting options, dual cf express b cards, more buttons, more megapixels, and more protective weather sealing. Video upgrades are even better, though I wish you could see metering settings such as the audio metering while recording.
The eye tracking AF mode sounds super interesting. That might be a really cool "first AF mode" to acquire the subject and then just use BBF to do the 3D tracking from there. Curious to see how that works in the real world! Sounds like an amazing upgrade but as an enthusiast bird photographer, its a bit too spendy for me. I'm still more drawn to the Z8 and nikon lens ecosystem from a performance to value perspective.
Great video... again! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on that camera. I still use my R7 (love it) but maybe one day, I'll add the R5 to my bag! 😊 Cheers!
Hi duade, just a question off topic, awhile ago you tested a r5 with a ef 100-400is usm 2 lens with a 2x converter giving 800mm,just wondering how the iq turned out, cheers.
Thanks, Duade! I pre-ordered the R5II on release day while watching you and guests on Ordinary Filmaker's live. Thanks again for joining. I'm pretty happy with the new features on the R5 II. I agree with your analysis here. I've already sold my R5. I thought it would take a month or two to sell but it was gone in 2 days. It's going to be a long month waiting because I don't have a camera now. What website did you get the readout speed chart from? Oh, and your ask for Canon to put the future R5 into the R3 body, SIGN ME UP. I would buy that. Looking forward to your tutorial and impressions once you get the R5II in hand. Thank you again for your great channel.
I caught you on Simon's (Ordimary Filmmaker) livestream of the R1 and R5ii launch. Loved everyone's insight. I never realized the R5 didn't have precapture, and learned that my R7 does. Well relearning, I found the feature when I got it but totally forgot about it once I was set up for birding. I tried it a week ago, and yeah. I agree that it's annoying to unpack the shot you want in-camera, but you at least know which shots were buffered and which are not. And you can unpack the specific shot you want rather than scrubbing through all those shots. Either kills the work flow. I'm not sure if maybe the EOS utility or mobile app can unpack the shots for me instead, I'll give it a look.
Regarding pre-shooting (photo): From what I gathered, the R5ii *only* pre-shoots the 1/2 sec, while you half-press the shutter button. So if you shoot using back-button AF, you can just immediately full-press the shutter button, and you won't save any extra photos you don't want to your card. Bonus knowledge: The R5ii features Pre-Recording in 4k120 video and 2k240 video, which is a *huge* feature for us wildlife shooters!!
Regarding what you say about preshooting: if that's the case and you don't want any pre-photos just disable it. Preshooting is awesome for action, but what Duade doesn't like is the fixed amount of pictures it takes.
@@ConcealedWeapon yeah, as I understood it, his main concern was having to deal with 15 additional photos every time he presses the shutter button. What I outlined is more of a work-around / something to keep in mind, however I too would prefer if it was possible to customize the time and/or the amount of photos which are being used for pre-shooting. I also looked into the manual, sadly you can't assign a button to enable/disable pre-shooting directly, so we'll still have to dive into the (quick) menu to do it :/
But you can assign a button to raw burst mode. Go into the menu and enable pre capture. Then assign a back button to raw burst mode. You then just have to push that button and select enable. Use this often in the r6mkll. It's awesome.
Thanks for this great Video! The best i‘ve seen yet!!! Can you recommend a CF Express Type B card for the R5 Mark II? I currently only have the R7 and I’m planning to upgrade to the R5 Mark II
One suggestion could be to Join Canon Professional Services or the Equivalent in AU. If you get gold or higher, you can check out cameras or lenses for free without having to purchase them unless you want to. I want the R5 MK II based on the new stacked sensor plus a few other improvements. I plan to keep my R5 to use on my RF100-500 Lens. It's nice having a smaller combo to keep on the passenger seat, I have a window mount for my EF600mm f/4 II. This way I can cover both sides of the road & above. I skipped on the R7 so this looks like the perfect companion. I don't think I've ever run out of buffer on the R5.
Here in the Netherlands price just above the introduction price of the Z8. I prefer the Z8 on specs. With costly batteries from Canon and recent discounts on the Z8 I do understand the anger. Thanks again for your honest review.
So far the best and most honest and most useful review of Canon R5 II on TH-cam.
This man does speak based on his experience, and how great that is! no teleprompter, because he has what to say! That's why I love your videos.
Thanks for the feedback, I apprecaite it, Cheers, Duade
he may use a teleprompter or a script but who cares.
As someone who does a lot of sport professionally I’ve found your video much more informative than all the other videos on this camera. Thank you!
Same! Wildlife is prob the least amount of shooting I do, but still default to his videos for objective and succinct info
Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate the feedback, Cheers, Duade
He hasn’t even tried the camera and he’s totally sold on it being so much better.🤷🏼♂️
I can't wait for your video when you get your camera. Keep up the great videos and stay healthy!
Thanks Charles, I can't wait, Cheers, Duade
I'm tempted to make the same upgrade, but I'm mainly covering music events in low light (occasionally football but for a hobby vs work) makes me unsure as the MP boost might be detrimental for me 😅
Hoping someone finds out how the low light compares to the R6 🤞
It states the following:
Network connectivity (Wi-Fi/wired LAN) is not available.
Your channel is one of the best about photography. Greetings from Portugal.
Nice to see you excited over the R5ii, each to their own bro :)
Thanks, yes, we are lucky to have so many options, Cheers, Duade
Again thanks for another great honest video Duade. I have the R5 and will be using it for a while, but the specs and information on the R5II is great to hear.
Thanks Bruce, yes, I look forward to getting the Mk II and seeing just what differences there are, Cheers, Duade
Always a good listen Duade. If I were in the Canon ecosystem, totally agree with your choice.
Great content Duade! Love your Channel.
Thanks for the feedback, Cheers, DUade
Best Video R5-II so far. Thanks!
Great value video, as always. Thanks Duade, I'm looking forward to your full real life review.
Thanks, I am looking forward to getting the camera also, Cheers, Duade
Spot on 45 mp in r3 body 👏👏
Great video as always. Appreciate how you are objective and point out the misses as well. I’ve preordered the R5m2 and can’t wait to try it out!
Congrats Rick, very exciting times, Cheers, Duade
Really outstanding review Duane! As someone else stated: better than other reviews I’ve seen. Thanks!
There's no reviews yet.
Great video, Duade, and you have convinced me to stick with my R5 for the time being 😊
14:13 its high time cameras come with built in memory like a built in hard disk. Hasselblad did it already.
R5 floats my boat! Agree about your assessment of features and relative cost. Pre-ordered the markII on the day of the launch.
Very well explained! Thank you!
Simply the best "user" overview on TH-cam. Excellent
Thanks Ian, you are too kind, Cheers, Duade
Love the editing on the photo at 19:20. Wow!!!
Love my R5 but think i'll be upgrading as well. Wish they'd changed the SD card out. It literally serves no benefit keeping it instead of having two CFE cards.
Great comparison between R5 and R5ii. More informative than other videos with hands on first look at R5ii.
I don’t actually mind Canon pumping the brakes on excessive features, but just hoping everything these new bodies are equipped with, that they absolutely perform flawlessly (and hopefully avoid the drama we saw with R5 roll-out several years ago!)
Thanks again for the direct and tact vids here sir, not a lot of people deliver in this fashion and you’re a true resource to the community 👌👌
Of course, raw- precapture, reduced rolling shutter and flexible frame rates definetely are improvements over the R5.
Cheers
Wolfgang
Spot on. Hope to see cross type autofocus sensors appear in the next R5 and R6 iterations
Fantastic review Duade !! thanks so much !
hope you ar feeling better. love your videos!
Thanks, yes, on the mend, Cheers, Duade
My understanding is the R5ii has passive cooling via vents which don’t compromise moisture intrusion, not a fan. But one or more battery grip options you can purchase provide active cooling via a fan.
Oh ok, thanks for that, I will correct for the review, Cheers, Duade
Great video Duade, love your fact based concise style. Keep up the great work. Look forward to receiving your feedback once you have the R5ll in hand.
Duade, really great video that clearly explains the good, bad and ugly of the new Canons. Hope the shoulder is healing well.
Thanks George, yes, on the mend, hopefully head out next week, Cheers, Duade
Sadly it turned out Canon had already planned 3 other grips ;-)
A crazy thing I'd like you try out on the R5ii is trying out for birds what was intended as wedding priority mode, where you can upload images of 10 persons in order to give these persons AF priority according to some ranking: Bride, groom, ..
Think I would wait for the r7 2 to come
Waiting for the R7 mark ii 🔥❤😊
Same
It'll be a turd just like the original R7...lol!
Just get a G9ii or OM1 ii
@@JoeMaranophotography nah bro I'm a canon lover, no other brand
@@manmohangour368 Fair one. If you are used to something that's worth a lot to be fair!
can't wait for the field tests and the chill videos!
I found the R5 ii being sold in Austria (Mediamarkt store) with delivery up to end August for 4800 euros (about 5200 US dollars). That's insane.
Thanks John, I will try and get out plenty of content with the camera to help make that decision. Cheers ,Duade
Hi Duade ... still loving my R3 😀
I’m still loving the shots I’m getting with the EOS R!
Hi Duade!
Yep, I have preorder ed the R5 MK II, and I am looking forward to try it.
Good comparison to the MK I.
Jan, DK
Strongly agreed about the pre-capture. It was your video on the OM-1 that led me to get into M43 and the OM-1 has become my primary body now for wildilfe. The two precapture modes on the OM-1 are so dang good, that it makes me look at Canon's version, both old and new, and go "Y'all can do better for sure."
I've pre-ordered the R5Mkll. I can't wait for it to arrive!
The price of the R5 2 is $7299 in New Zealand which is cheaper than the R5 when that came out.
Thanks Bruce, I wonder why we got a good price down here, I am not complaining but it is interesting. Cheers, Duade
I believe the R5m2 only has passive cooling unless you attach the battery grip with fan, but even then it seems to only help around 5% with run-time in video, so not much benefit 🤷♂️
The R1 is cheaper because it’s really just an R3 mark 2. Canon needs a 45mp R1 for it to be a real flagship camera
Got in early, lets go! Keep up the good work Duade!
Congrats mate, I will be lining up at the door to get mine :-) Cheers, Duade
I’d like to know when yours and Jan’s hands on reviews will be published 🤣 The only true real world reviews without bias worth watching 👍
Thanks, I will get the R5II on release and will do a first impression video and will do a full review once I have really used the camera in the field. Cheers, Duade
We'll have to wait until November for that and that's if you were first in line for the pre-order
I want to know image quality R1 vs R5II. Is the R1 image worth half of an R5II more?
Thank you.
Thanks Robert, the R5 will be an incredible camera for many years and I am sure will bring you a lot of joy. Cheers, Duade
Thanks. G'day
Congrats on the lens, sorry it took so long, lets hope Canon have learnt from that and they have plenty of stock of the camera. Cheers, Duade
literally mate
Hi Duade, great vid, you have just given me some info I didn't know about the R5 ii,, i am little disappointed about the non vari angle screen, new batteries hasn't made me smile, and there are a few other factors as well, however for me it should be a huge step up in technology and probably at my age the last camera I buy, so I pre ordered one instantly after the announcement, I have bought a 1TB cf express card , which I hope will be big enough, i do agree though why a sd card on this camera (crazy). I will have a huge amount of questions for you when I get mine, I hope you wont me asking you but mate I certainly will.
Hey mate, congrats and yep no problem at all, the AF does take some getting used to that is for sure. Yes 1TB will be plenty. Cheers, Duade
OMG! I have recently been fixing photos taken by my friend with my R5 at fluorescent-lit venue. WB was all over the place!
Yes, I don't know what they have changed with metering but it appears to be a big improvement. Cheers, Duade
Can't wait
Fantastic review Duade, cant wait to see your future videos on the R5 ii 👌👌👌 Its defnitely going to be a beast of a camera.
For anyone coming here expecting a video about why Duade chose the R5ii over the R1, the video starts at 17:01.
Kia ora, John, I don't know for sure but suspect it will go black which is very annoying. Cheers, Duade
Hi Duade hope you are well, was wondering when your full R5mk2 review might be?
Always love your videos even though have never shot Canon and probably never will now. Had
Nikon as first DSLR then moved to Sony A9 for silent shooting, happy now with my Sony A7R5 and SonyA93. And as I get older weigh becomes more important M4/3 likely to be the next move!
As always details explained in full. Thank you. I use the M-Fn button to switch between stills and video, and I prefer it that way. I am now wondering if this option is still available with the addition of the video on/off switch.
Good question, I hope it is also and I assume it will be. Cheers, Duade
The new online R5m2 manual says that with the current battery pre-continuos-shooting will not be available, and the maximum FPS will be lower.
Though about a month out from anyone receiving the R5 Mk II, would like to see how you set up the AF on your camera for small birds - Cheers !
Always great hearing your thoughts Duade! 😁👍
There appears to be a discrepancy about the R5 II weight, the Canon UK site states that the weight with card and battery is 746g, 656g without card and battery (just a few grams more than R5).
Otherwise there would be no R5 Mark III 😉
I personally see the EOS R1 more in sports photography for professional sports reporters.
Uwe
Greetings from Germany
Very informative
Dear Sir, a really great video clearly explains, Thank you
Thanks, Duade!
Thanks for the support and comments, yes that was fun, congrats on the camera and have fun when it arrives. Cheers, Duade
My Canon 5D Mark III still works great. Does the job photographing 5K runs. Sure it misses some shots but it works. Doing payed gigs.
Is Canon EF 100-300mm f/5.6 worth buying for a begginer?
Seems like a no-brainer for wildlife! Both a bit out of my budget, but old cameras can still get the job done.
This was a better review then the people that had the camera and reviewed it 😂
Nice work
Regarding pre-shooting (photo):
From what I gathered, the R5ii *only* pre-shoots the 1/2 sec, while you half-press the shutter button.
Pre Record Video is just about as important as Pre Capture Photo. Yet it is barely being mentioned.
So how did the Raws from the R1 look like?
